Library Wars: Love & War Volume 2
Author: Kiiro Yumi
Illustrator: Kiiro Yumi
Publisher: Viz Media/Madman
Release Date: March 10, 2013
Price: $14.95 – Available Here

Overview
Library Wars started out slow and calculated, introducing us one by one to the line-up of potential princes for our feisty protagonist Iku, all the while laying foundations for things to come. The early goings had a great deal of potential to make for what could be a very special shojo manga. Now here we stand with volume two of Library Wars and little has changed. It remains a promising series, but one that has yet to find its footing or direction.

Story
Volume two begins to start the engine on the plot, with Iku and the rest of the Library Forces finally engaging in actual combat, making the ‘War’ part of the title have a sense of purpose that it didn’t have in volume one. While the first volume spent the majority of its time introducing us to the cast and the world they live in, volume two lets us get to know them more, exploring their relationships to one another and the world around them in greater detail.

Of particular interest in this volume is the connection formed between Iku and Tezuka. In volume one Tezuka was little more than a bad boy that had an irrational sense of jealousy towards Iku. This volume expands upon Tezuka in some interesting ways, giving his character more depth and personality. His relationship with Iku is likewise further developed, marking Tezuka as a potential prince for Iku, the girl who is trying to find her prince that touched her face (that is her goal in life it seems).

The combat sequence in this volume, while long-awaited came off as amateurish at best. Yumi is clearly out of her depth when it comes to action scenes. The raid chapters were far from engaging and lacked the punch that it needed. The framing was not handled well and the pacing of the action was far too slow. This is a shojo manga and it is understandable that action is not always a big part of this genre, but Library Wars marked itself as a series with action from the very concept alone. This is war? I don’t think so. There needed to be greater emotional stakes to the battle, but there was never any doubt that Iku wouldn’t be just fine. There is a possibility that Yumi can improve her action scene writing over the coming volumes, but for the first real battle of the titular war, it rang hollow.

Artwork
Much like last volume, Library Wars is a solid job in terms of artwork. It never takes any risks, instead opting for the very safe shojo aesthetic that has been done to death now. It isn’t a bad thing, but for a series with a high-concept like this, it couldn’t have hurt to try something a little more daring. It is worth mentioning that while the action sequences are poorly written and paced, they are well drawn. However there is the unfortunate sloppy framing that can confuse what is happening at times. All in all it is a middle-ground that I hope Yumi can move away from. She needs to go all in with Library Wars, but there is just far too much hesitance of her part to do something radical, which is a shame in every single way.

Extra Content
Volume two of Library Wars comes with a pleasant amount of bonus content. This volume features in-between chapter 4koma gag strips (a type of four-panel mini chapter), bonus chapters at the end of the volume and of course the author comment at the end. Yumi comments in this volume about her friends playing a prank on her in the guise of Dojo from the series. It was a humourous little spot in the volume and definitely a change of pace from her nerve-riddled ramblings in the first volume about whether she was up to task of adapting Library Wars into manga. This volume features less extra content than volume one, but that is bound to continue on as we dive deeper into the series.

Overall
Library Wars volume two is ultimately a mixed bag. It still shows the potential of volume one, but it has yet to do anything with it. The concept of the series is quite interesting but Kiiro Yumi doesn’t dare to do something different in terms of art and story telling structure. It is a by the book shojo manga, that needs to commit itself more to its high-concept and have the confidence to take some risks creatively. There is a long way to go for Library Wars. There is a lot of room for improvement. It is a long road ahead, but one I will continue travelling with Iku and her would-be princes. It looks like the war has just begun.

playstation-4-console

Well, this was expected after the announcement of Xbox One‘s playability at the upcoming EB Expo 2013 (something we are excited about after seeing it demonstrated in person at PAX); it has now been confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will also be playable at the show.

Debra McGrath, EB Games National Brand, Events and Engagement Manager, had this to say of the coup that has all but cemented the expo as the premiere gaming event in Australia;

It’s fantastic that Australians get the chance to get hands on with the PS4 at EB Expo before its official release. This is usually a privilege reserved for industry insiders, now everyone is an insider. This is a big deal… people are going to be able to look back in years to come and brag that they played it first. We know that this is something that the community have been waiting for and as gamers ourselves we are equally excited. The prospect of hands on game play before the official release is something gamers only dream of. We are stoked that Sony Computer Entertainment Australia has made this a reality for those attending EB Expo.

Wolverine Slashes Into Lego Marvel Super Heroes

lego-marvel-screenshot-01

“I’m the best at what I do, bub. And what I do is play with Lego” Ok yes, I know that isn’t how the line goes, but it is a fantastic way to bring up today’s exciting news. Warner Bros and TT Games have announced that Wolverine will be clawing and slashing his way through the upcoming Lego Marvel Super Heroes game. More specifically, it appears that characters and locations from the movie; The Wolverine (check out our review here) will be present.

We always knew that good ole’ Logan would be a playable character in the game, but now we have learned that he will be joined by fellow mutants Jean Grey, Viper and Silver Samurai. Despite their ties to the latest film, all of the characters have been based on their comic book appearances. In addition, It looks like Wolverine will come equipped with all his usual tools; Adamantium claws and skeleton, Healing factor and badass attitude… All in Lego form!

Viper, as she appears in Lego Marvel Super Heroes

I for one am liking how the game is somewhat tying into other Marvel properties. From using the movie interpretation of Asgard, through to promotional variant comic book covers. It shows a lot of work, and a lot of heart is going into this game, and will likely result in the definitive Marvel Super Heroes game.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes is set to launch on Xbox 360, PS3, WiiU, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, Playstation Vita and PC this spring, as well as Xbox One and PS4 when they launch later this year. For all the Lego Marvel news as it becomes available, stay tuned to Capsule Computers.

Shadowrun Returns Review

Shadowrun Returns
Developer: Harebrained Schemes
Publisher: Harebrained Schemes
Platforms: PC (Reviewed)
Release Date: July 25, 2013
Price: $19.99 – Available Here

Overview
Though the Shadowrun name has been around in pen-and-paper form since 1989, the video game sector of the franchise has been dormant for over half a decade. It could be argued by some that the 2007 shooter wasn’t even worthy to carry the name. Designer Jordan Weisman fired up a Kickstarter in March 2012 and reached his goal of $400,000 within only 28 hours. It was clear that fans wanted another Shadowrun title.

Fast forward to late July 2013. Weisman and his new studio, Harebrained Schemes, have been hard at work and their cyberpunk-meets-magic game and it’s finally available to the masses. How does Shadowrun Returns hold up? Has it lived up to expectations or should be be left in the shadows? Let’s find out.

shadowrun-returns-ss-01

Story
You’re sitting at home late one night when an old colleague of yours, Sam Watts, shows up on your screen. With the help of a “dead man’s switch,” Sam comes back from beyond the grave to let you know that he has passed on and offer you another job. If you’ll find and bring his killer to justice, you’ll be rewarded with ¥100,000.

After a quick flashback that also serves as a combat tutorial, you head into the shadows to uncover Sam’s killer, but there’s more at play in Seattle than you can see on the surface…

Gameplay
Shadowrun Returns is an isometric RPG with tactical turn-based combat. For fans familiar with the Fallout franchise before it became a first-person shooter, it plays much like those.

shadowrun-returns-ss-02

You’ll start by creating your character. You can choose from human, elf, dwarf, ork, and troll. Each have their own stats that affect their combat skills as well as how they’re treated by folks in the world of Shadowrun. Once you’ve got your race, you can choose one of six classes to ply your skills: street samurai, mage, decker (a hacker), shaman (summons spirits), rigger (uses drones), and the melee-focused adept. Each class plays distinctly differently from the others, giving you multiple chances to experience the combat with a fresh perspective.

The story and world itself are presented to the player in a series of complete story pieces. You’ll have moments when you can freely walk around, searching for items and talking to folks. Then you’ll have missions that are entirely focused on clearing an area of baddies. It’s a good mix and it helps move the story along.

Between missions, you’ll return back to the Seamstresses Union. On the surface it appears to be nothing more than a bar, but you’ll quickly come to rely on Mrs. Kubota and her establishment. You’ll be able to buy weapons, spells, upgrades and more from here, as well as hire mercenaries to help you on some of your missions.

shadowrun-returns-ss-03

In combat, each character has action points. You can use these to move, reload weapons, cast spells, heal up, attack, or set up an overwatch. You can maneuver behind cover for better defensive positioning. Landing attacks in the game is all based on percentages with your range, skill, and more. This adds a bit of luck and anticipation to the combat, giving you some really extraordinary jump-up-and-shout moments.

As you progress through the story and complete objectives, you’ll earn karma points. Instead of experience points that grant you level-ups, karma points can be redeemed directly for skill points. You can put them in overall stat boosts like Strength, Charisma, Intelligence, and so on, or you can choose to specialize and put the points in skills like Dodge, Rifles, Drone Control, and more. This is a fantastic way to help the player feel like they’re actively involved in the development of the character they’re playing. It also gives you the freedom, over the course of the game, to explore with some of your points and still be ok if they don’t work out.

shadowrun-returns-ss-04

One of Shadowruns Returns greatest strengths is its storytelling. Weisman and team have done a fantastic job constructing the basic campaign. The neon glow of a cyberpunk Seattle is an eery and beautiful sight. Each character you meet as you play holds real weight to them. The dialogue is intelligent and well-written, really giving you a sense of immersion in the seedy world of the shadowrunners. The folks that help you out are also smart and lively. It gives the sense that you’re playing through a best-selling novel.

Visuals
Shadowrun Returns is an excellent looking game. The colors play well together, the artwork is magnificent, and the environments are detailed. Animations are all smooth as glass and the particle effects from spells, shots, and more look quite nice. The isometric view works really well for this style game, too, and the ability to zoom it in and out lets you have full command of the field while still keeping everything easily accessible. The user interface is easy to get used to and maneuver as well. All in all, its a great looking, functional game.

shadowrun-returns-ss-05

Audio
The audio design of the game is functional, though nothing particularly stands out with it. Sound effects are really only noticeable when you’re changing gear of in combat. The music doesn’t jump out unless you’re on the main screen either. What’s there works well enough, but nothing really pops.

Overall
All in all, Shadowrun Returns is a great package. The gameplay is immersive while maintaining its cognitive edge. The aesthetic of the game looks fantastics all the way around. The sound design doesn’t do anything too standout, but it doesn’t harm the experience either. Add all of that to a solid 10-12 hour campaign with good pacing and great storytelling, and you have a wonderful overall package. Fans who don’t think the story is long enough will also be pleased to know the game comes with a complete campaign creation suite and content is already being pumped out. Unless the genres Shadowrun Returns hits on just aren’t in your wheelhouse, you should sincerely consider giving this game a look.
