Call of Duty: Ghosts gets an Upgrade

cod-ghosts-e3-videos-01

The Call of Duty franchise is without argument one of the biggest in gaming today. It constantly breaks sales and pre-order records, as well as maintaining millions upon millions of active players every day. No matter what your thoughts are on the franchise, it is definitely a powerhouse.

The franchise’s latest installment; Call of Duty: Ghosts is soon to release, but with the impending jump to the next-generation of consoles, and the fact that these new consoles can’t play current-gen games, many gamers have been worried that they would be forced to purchase an additional copy of the game once the new consoles launched. However, the guys over at Activision have quelled those concerns (at least for Playstation owners) by introducing the Call of Duty: Ghosts Upgrade Program.

The completely optional program allows owners of the PS3 version of Ghosts to upgrade to the PS4 version for a meager price of $10. The promotion will run for a limited time, and is sure to ease the minds (and wallets) of many CoD players who weren’t keen on buying two copies.

Details on the promotion are scarce (such as how long the limited time will be), but we will be sure to keep you informed as the information comes to light. So for all the Call of Duty and Upgrade Program news as they become available, stay tuned to Capsule Computers.

Space-Dandy-01

First Cowboy Bebop, then Samurai Champloo, then Kids On The Slope and now…well now is Space Dandy’s time to shine! This week a little bit of key information on Shinichirow Watanabe and BONES‘ new Sci-Fi, action, comedy was released. Fans of Watanabe’s work had already decided that they were going to watch it as soon as he put his name to the series but now with a little bit more info released it may pick up some newer fans. Allow me to take you through it. Dandy is an alien-hunter and the titular character of the series, his job as an alien-hunter is to seek out new races of aliens before anyone else can, once he does he get’s an awesome reward. He’s like Nature’s Bounty Hunter. Together with his vacuum robot QT and his idiot alien friend Meow who he met in his travels, he combs the galaxy encountering new friends and enemies as well as planets and their odd inhabitants.

Space-Dandy-02

Dandy’s age is, so far, unclear but we can all kind of guess that he’s somewhere in his late 20’s, early 30’s. He’s said to not care about little things and believes that his dream lies somewhere in the universe. On first glance he seems like a typical Watanabe protagonist. QT, his robot friend, believes that he is of high-power but in reality he is just a normal vacuum cleaner robot who takes pride in what he does and is fairly serious. Meow is labelled a “dimwit alien”, he’s not any evolution of cat even though he shares many of the animal’s traits and is named “Meow”. He’s carefree and seems like he was raised with no constraints. It was also revealed that Yasuyuki Okamura will perform the series’ theme songs which will be called “Viva Namida” and “Healthy Merci”. Space Dandy is set for release sometime in January of next year, expect lots of info to be released in the coming months so keep your eyes on the site.

Stand tall, buddy, I’m sure you’ll get through it…alive? No probably not…

The team over at Namco Bandai games America have just confirmed a special Closed-Beta-Test for Dark Souls II. The invitation goes out to any and all hardcore Dark Souls fans who think they have what it takes to go head-to-head with the open-beta for the game’s sequel. “Only the strong need apply for one of the most challenging beta experiences ever offered on the Sony PlayStation 3 system” is what Namco Bandai have said and considering what I’ve heard about this game…I’d say they’re 100% on the ball with that statement. It’s an incredible opportunity to be able to play the Beta of a new game but I’ve seen none like this before, an open challenge? Wow! This Closed-Beta experience is said to test players in every aspect of their gaming experience, from their skill to their “intestinal fortitude” to their sheer will to survive.

I'm not scared, I'm not scared, I'm not...I'm scared...
I’m not scared, I’m not scared, I’m not…I’m scared…

Don’t be too scared though because, difficult as the game is, players will be getting the chance to delve deep into a new world of Dark Souls, they’ll come across new monsters and lots of different obstacles to overcome. FromSoftware will literally be throwing you into the deep darkness of the new Dark Souls environment boasting that it is “one of the most treacherous areas of the Dark Souls II world” so all you fans can look forward to that! This is all scheduled to begin on the 5th of October this year for players in North American and Europe. It will be held on the PlayStation Network through your PlayStation 3. Now I’m sure all you die-hard fans have ants in your pants after reading this news and can’t wait to juggernaut your way through this open-beta (good luck!) so I suggest you head over to the Official Dark Souls Facebook page where, starting on the 5th of September, the development team and Namco Bandai will be posting continuous news pieces and updates regarding the registration process and details on the beta. It’s time to start sharpening your weapons, putting on your armour and level grinding like you’ve never done before because the Dark Souls II Beta is soon to hit your screen and I guarantee that you’ll want to be ready to hit back!

Betrayer Preview

betrayer-preview-002

Betrayer is the new FPS adventure from Blackpowder Games, a studio filled with developers who worked on the original FEAR and No One Lives Forever. Betrayer is a highly stylized black, white, and red horror game that encourages exploration and extrapolation. The game is currently in alpha status through Steam’s Early Access program.

The player begins the game by washing up on the shores of Virginia. It is 1604 and Britain is colonizing America. The Spaniards have attacked the ship the player was sailing on and a mysterious darkness has literally drained almost all the colour from the world. A strange girl in a red cloak leaves a set of messages and a bow for the player and it is up to the player to explore from there. The land is full of monstrous Spaniards that have been transformed into angry beasts that are capable of slaughtering the player with a single blow.

betrayer-preview-001

The player is initially armed with a short bow and dagger. The tomahawk is quickly introduced as a quick way to handle charging enemies up close. Soon, the player will also pick up a long bow, crossbow, musket, and pistol from dead Spaniards. Weapons have a small chance of deflecting off the Spanish metal armour and come in a variety of qualities. Enemy melee attacks are an instant death while the player can soak up a few ranged attacks. The melee is woefully underpowered. Although perfectly serviceable as a stealth weapon, the player will be long dead before the enemy is in range to be stabbed to death. The player must rely on their single tomahawk to handle a charging enemy.

The bows feels like a laser sniper rifle of doom. After excellent bow mechanics from other recent games, Betrayer’s bow feels unrealistic. The bows are capable of making accurate shots across long distance in a completely straight line. It is also possible to draw the bow back and walk around for extended periods of time without any penalty. I would prefer to see more realistic bow mechanics to raise the tension and danger in Betrayer.

betrayer-preview-005

Upon death, all of the gold the player has hoarded drops on their dead body and extra reinforcements are called. The player is resurrected back at the town with just enough ammunition to survive a small fight. The player has a short period of time to make it back to their corpse to retrieve the lost goods before they disappear. Surprisingly, losing gold is not a huge hassle as money is easily come by in Betrayer. There is a small store players can purchase better equipment, but currently the options are limited.

Betrayer is about exploration and extrapolation. Players are given very little direction. Pressing X will cause the wind to blow and if the player listens carefully they can hear a haunting sound that will lead them towards a point of interest. Although it is a creepy and interesting method to nudge the gamer in a certain direction, there are very few visual clues of where to go. I suspect those who are hard of hearing may struggle with the game.

betrayer-preview-003

Exploration can be a fun part of the game, but I found the map system to be extremely frustrating. The player is equipped with an extremely vague map and a compass that will have markers for points of interest. It became extremely difficult to orient myself and I often found myself walking around in circles. There are a lot of possible ways to address this issue, but I think the simplest way would simply provide a marker on the map of the player’s position.

The developers effectively double the size of the map by adding the haunted bell. By ringing the bell, the players are instantly transported to an alternate land of the dead. This is where players can interrogate the ghosts of the colonists to learn more about the story. The raging Spaniards are replaced with ghosts that will ambush the player and can only be killed with a shot to the skull. Although I did not find Betrayer to be really scary, there were some good jump from the chair moments due to a ghost ambush.

Blackpowder Games provides enough bread crumbs for players to make educated guesses on the overarching plot. Clues are littered around the area that will allow the player to interrogate a ghost to discover their sins. The developers hope that this will spur discussions among a lively community about the events in game. As the game is in alpha, the available plot content is a bit on the thin side.

betrayer-preview-004

Betrayer’s visual style is eye-catching and distinct. The colour from the world has been completely drained for the exception of a few splashes of blood red. It works well, though details tend to blur together at a medium to long distance. This makes figuring out the direction a Spaniard is facing a bit difficult.

Blackpowder Games’ alpha of Betrayer is a text book example of an early alpha. The team have a solid idea on what Betrayer is going to become but are still experimenting on the best way to balance their plans with enjoyable gameplay. They seem to be very receptive to player feedback. A unique gameplay experience is growing to match the unique visual style.

Pre-Order Outlast For Discounted Price

Pre-Order-Outlast-For-Discounted-Price

Horror fans definitely have an intense experience waiting for them with the release of the fearsome game Outlast coming up, but that’s not the only reason to take note. Indie developers Red Barrel have announced today that their upcoming title will be available for pre-order directly from Steam, but the difference is the 20% discount off the games original $19.99 price tag. The deal starts today and is available for a limited time as it only lasts through the game’s September 4 debut.

Ever since its debut to the masses way back in October at PAX East and E3 Outlast has excited gamers and media alike with its creepy setting and interesting concept and PAX Prime will stir up excitement even more as Red Barrel is set to unveil a new hands on tech demo on September 1.

For those not lucky enough to seen what the game is all about Outlast throws you into a long abandoned asylum deep in the remote reaches of Colorado. Massive Mountain Asylum, as it was called, has now been opened under the guise of “research” as the Murkoff Corporation keeps all their activities in secret. The main character gets an anonymous tip as to the activities taking place at the supposedly abandoned asylum. What is discovered blurs the line between the quest for knowledge and sheer evil.

DBZ Battle Of Z New Gameplay Footage and Details

battle-of-z-02

A new gameplay video has emerged for the upcoming Dragon Ball 8 man team fighter, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z. The video shows a Super Saiyan Goku fighting Frieza. But unlike former games in the series he’s not alone this time and has Krillin, Gohan and Piccolo to help. Fans of the show will remember Goku turned Super Saiyan as a result of his anger from witnessing his best friend Krillin get blown to pieces by the evil Frieza, so the fact that he’s alive at this point in the story raises some interesting questions. It’s nice to see a game having some fun with it though as long running fans of the series have played through the same sagas many times by now.

battle-of-z-03

Some other pictures have also been found online that reveal some interesting details. The picture below seems to be a mockup of the character select screen and shows us how many fighters we can expect in Battle of Z as well as which ones have been revealed so far. 67 character slots seem reserved for standard fighters and transformations while another 5 are reserved for large characters such as Great Ape Gohan and Great Ape Vegeta. Three of these large characters are still a mystery as are who will take the spots in those strange green boxes. Some confirmed characters such as Majin Buu and Bills, the antagonist from the recent film Battle of Gods, are missing from this select screen. Although this does indeed look like the final character count, this could of course change by the time the game releases.

battle-of-z-04
It was also confirmed recently that you can fully customise the colour of any characters main outfit (which could probably lead to some funny combinations such as Majin Vegeta wearing all pink). However we still haven’t seen signs of actual alternate costumes. These outfits might be apart of the DLC that will release after the game as was confirmed in a panel last month, but it is still unknown what the actual content of the DLC will be.

battle-of-z-01

Let us know what you think about the roster and who are your predictions for those unnamed spots. Don’t forget to watch the all new gameplay footage as well and check out the announcement trailer if you haven’t seen it already. Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z is now expected to launch in early 2014 on the PS3, PS Vita and Xbox 360.
