Toki Tori 2+ Will See Design Improvements Over Wii U Version

Toki Tori 2+ may have been delayed a week, but it seems like to help fill in the wait Two Tribes has decided to fill in players to some improvements for the design that players can expect for Toki Tori 2+ (and Wii U as well). These changes stem from both reviews and feedback, all as a means of making an all around better experience for players.

As some might know from the Toki Tori 2 Review, the game features no text tutorials. This may have proved too difficult, so more landmarks to better define areas, a mole to aid players in returning to the start, and a new character to point the way in the most confusing of parts. All fine ideas and not at all game breaking as they have been carefully considered to ensure players fun in solving things for themselves, but not at all the only changes.

Players wanting to see the whole list of improvements and reasons can check out the Two Tribes Website, while waiting that one extra week for Toki Tori 2+ to release onto PC via Steam.

Saints Row IV Preview

saintsrowiv-screenshot-01

So, having spent the last few days trying out the Saints Row IV Preview build I have to admit to just having my mind completely blown. I’m not going to spoil any surprises for you at this stage, but expect the deeply tongue in cheek, series defining sense of humor that fans have grown to love to make a constant re-appearance, often at the most surprising of times. Not to mention the absolutely incredible prologue that awaits players and sends them crashing into the main plot with both style and substance. The overall premise is both well chosen and carefully navigated. It’s also deeply engaging, and the gameplay feels like a combination of the best gameplay elements of several other successful titles; blending third person shooter elements, free roam and driving physics and of course adding the series’ signature slapstick skin to polish things off. In a nutshell, this game looks seriously promising and is in complete honesty, a true joy to play.

Character creation features once again here and it’s got a similar level of depth as say Mass Effect in terms of options and variability. Looking at it (and I have done with nothing but unbridled awe for several straight hours now) broadly, this looks like a very special, deservedly anticipated and rewarding title indeed. The story as usual features a focus on extravagance and action-hero-esque excess. The plot is as high concept as the rest of the game and all in all you can’t help but feel like you’ve stumbled into what would happen if the whole games industry was based out of Hollywood. Expect a whole world of eye candy here as well ranging from the city itself to the vehicle and weapon design and character skins. Everything has a particularly satisfying, comic art meets hyper-realism feel, and somehow Deep Silver have pulled it off to a tee. It’s vibrant, atmospheric, and most crucially smooth.

Players will certainly not be disappointed with the writing and overall narrative either, as it’s as highly engaging, expertly written, well voice acted, empowering and of course totally hilarious as you’d expect from Saints Row. It really is. After the first thirty minutes of play you’ll all see exactly what I’m getting at. They’ve really outdone themselves here. It’s a genuine surprise and a joy to experience. There’s everything you could possibly want in a game present here (I’m still reeling from some of the several hilarious choices characters have presented me with along my character creation journey)  and the satisfying and visually surprising gameplay doesn’t give players much time to get lost or bored. The objectives system is streamlined and the HUD efficient and clear. But you can still pretty much go anywhere on the way and enjoy the sights. It’s that spontaneous freedom that is the hard part to get right with a title like this, and Deep Silver made it happen with perfect execution. Of course, its still set against the more traditional ‘as you please’ backdrop of destruction and whimsy that set this more in the camp of Mercenaries than GTA in the series’ early days.

Although only a preview build, graphically I’m quite sure that this is going to simply blow people’s minds. It trashed mine. My rig assumed maximum settings and didn’t struggle or lose any frames when things got busy. This becomes most apparent in traffic collisions as the impact physics greatly surpass anything we’ve seen in the GTA series, Sleeping Dogs or even games like Just Cause. In terms of the overall visual feel, it’s slick and highly polished and all in all, the whole game just screams “Yeah. I look good, and I know it, and so should you.” and you can’t help but feel like buying a hat just so you can return to take it off in respect. In short, it’s been a long time indeed since a game made me expel a genuine “Whoa…” and I thought those days were gone – well done Deep Silver. Well done.

The Making of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – The Beginning

the-witcher-3-wild-hunt-01

During E3 2013, CD Projekt Red released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – The Beginning’, the first developer diary for their mammoth conclusion to the Witcher trilogy. Now, they have released a behind the scenes video for the dev diary, which you can view embedded at the bottom of this article.

It’s a bit odd to see a ‘making of’ video for what is essentially a ‘making of’ video itself, but that’s how the Polish studio rolls! The team had a crew shooting in Scotland for 3 days, capturing the magnificent cliffs, forests and castles of the Scandinavian country for what is probably one of the more involved developer diaries you’ll ever see. You’d think that Peter Jackson directed it!

Anyway, we can’t wait for the humongous RPG that will see the close of Geralt of Rivia’s tale. And then, onto the also highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 from the acclaimed guys and gals over in Poland. You can also check out our own interview with the Game Director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz.

VFX Studio Pixomondo Lauds Dell Infrastructure

Pixomondo-Logo-01

Visual effects studio Pixomondo have revealed and praised the complete Dell solution – comprised of Dell Precision workstations, Dell PowerEdge servers, Dell PowerVault storage and Dell UltraSharp monitors – that they relied on to tackle the animation and VFX work necessary for bringing Game of Thrones Season 2 and Star Trek Into Darkness to life.

Sven Martin and Ben Grossmann, visual effects supervisors at Pixomondo, said of the experience;

We started to work on ‘Game of Thrones’ for season two, taking the job of creating all the visual effects for that series. This was an enormous undertaking on a TV series with a tight schedule, and thanks to the speed and reliability we get from our Dell workstations, monitors, servers and storage, and the tremendous support we get from Dell’s IT support, we were not only able to meet the tough expectations, we were also brought on for season three. – Martin

It was exceptionally rewarding and very challenging to work on the Star Trek franchise and create something new that would still pay homage to the original. The Dell workstations and servers gave us tremendous computational firepower to render the massive 3D images around the clock. – Grossmann

GameOfThrones-Dragons-Season2-01

Specifically, to fully realise effects on Game of Thrones, such as exploding ships and the 3 dragons of fan favourite Daenerys Targaryen – ‘Mother of Dragons’ – Pixomondo utilised Dell Precision T5500 and T5600 tower workstations to create the complex content quickly and Dell UltraSharp U2410, U2711 and U2312HM monitors for clear and detailed display. The studio also used Dell PowerVault MD3220 and MD1220 storage and Dell PowerEdge R410, R620 and R720 servers in its render farm for quick segment turnaround, allowing for more rounds of tweaking, and ultimately a better final product before deadline.

For the great Star Trek Into Darkness, Pixomondo was challenged with creating 380 pivotal shots that would satisfy the unique expectations of a fan base spanning 50 years. To do so, they worked on Dell Precision T7600 and T5500 workstations with NVIDIA Quadro K4000 graphics cards, Dell UltraSharp U2410 monitors and Dell PowerEdge R510, R410 and R310 servers. Among other things, the hardware enabled the team to push the limits on action-packed sequences of the film such as the attack on Starfleet Headquarters, high-speed pursuit above the Klingon home world of Kronos and the ensuing battle on the surface of the entirely computer graphics (CG) generated world.

Star-Trek-Into-Darkness-Screen-05

The infrastructure also allowed teams across the world, from London to Stuttgart, Los Angeles, Frankfurt, Beijing and Burbank, to collaborate on projects without missing a beat, with Dell’s global media solution allowing Pixomondo to sync large amounts of data across them while greatly reducing storage costs. Vice president of tablet and performance PCs at Dell, Neil Hand, said;

We are constantly striving to provide our customers with high performing and reliable solutions for their specific needs. We are always amazed by the visual effects work Pixomondo develops, which are among the best in the industry, on our technology; it represents the epitome of our ‘Power to Do More’ philosophy.

Pixomondo went on to create the digital creatures and hero environments for Season 3 of the increasingly, insanely popular Game of Thrones and will continue to work on the series for future seasons.
