Beware of Zombies in YAIBA: Ninja Gaiden Z

Yaiba-Zombie-1
Zombies have taken over the entire world and only one certain ninja can do anything about it. In YAIBA: Ninja Gaiden Z you get to slay a large variety of zombies to your blood-thirty hearts content.

There is a number of zombies that you can slice and dice in YAIBA: Ninja Gaiden Z and Tecmo Koei has kindly detailed the several types of ‘stiffs’ in their Zombie alert announcement:

1. The Infected (Normal Stiff)
Most of our ex-neighbours and friends stink. You might have thought they stunk when they were alive too, but now their odour is unmistakeably horrible. They seem to be stronger, faster, (a hell of a lot) uglier and stupider than they were in life and if you have keen sense of smell you might be able to avoid them- for a minute or two.

2. Electric Infected (Electric Stiff)
These electricity-charged stiffs seem to be producing their own electric power. It’s actually amusing, but if these guys were contained they could actually produce free electricity for all! However, given the fact that almost everyone is dead or hiding, TV and microwave ovens should be the least of your worries. Remember high school physics and either try to ground them or drown them. Either way you won’t have much time to act.

3. Burning Infected (Fire Stiff)
Don’t approach them unless you’re cold or tired of living and want to leave life in flames. They are ever-burning, glow in the dark, hideously disfigured and smell disturbingly like BBQ.

4. Toxic Infected (Bile Stiff)
If you are an optimist who believes the army will come to this city’s rescue- don’t be. Those idiots already came and skilfully managed to get themselves infected WHILE WEARING THEIR SUITS. So now they are trapped in there, feeding on their own flesh and producing some sort of green toxic bile that looks extremely disgusting and highly corrosive.

5. The Priest (Scorcher)
On the other hand, if you look to the clergy for an answer to your prayers- look again. They are nowhere to be found. Apart from this one priest that roams the city with a scorching censer- hopefully reading everyone their posthumous last rites, but most likely wreaking vengeance on whoever he thinks is wicked and sinful; so pretty much everyone that walks past him.

6. The Brawler (Shredder)
The rich and famous did not escape this scourge either! Local celebrity and world famous ex-boxer and MMA fighter Vseslav Degtyarev has fallen victim to the infection and is now laying his award winning punches to everyone in range. Yes, some might judge him for that brief assault case, or for the fact his career didn’t end in the most pleasant note, but look at him now! Strong as ever! Agile as a panther! Quick as a.. quickly rotting undead thing.

7. The Terrible Two (Baby Bruiser)
To be honest, no one really knows what this is. It seems to be some sort of experiment gone wrong as it has two heads and is slightly over-sized. It also seems to be hungry all the time and does cry a lot when it doesn’t suck on some poor passer-by’s bone marrow.

You can check out some pictures of the types of ‘stiffs’ in YAIBA: Ninja Gaiden Z below. The game is slated for release on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and iOS in early 2014. Be sure to let us know what you think of these wild zombies and of YAIBA: Ninja Gaiden Z in the comments section.

Tsuritama Review

tsuritama-box-art
Tsuritama
Studio: A-1 Pictures
Publisher: Sentai Filmworks
Format: DVD, Blu-ray (Reviewed)
Release Date: August 20, 2013
Price: $69.98 – Available Here

Overview
There are countless anime every season that involve cute girls doing cute things, usually with an extra twist placed somewhere in there, there are also anime involving a group of guys trying to find their way in the world and learn to make friends with one another or deal with various obstacles in their way as they try to grow up. Tsuritama just happens to be one of those shows and it also comes with a bit of a fishy twist, but is it enough to entertain viewers?

Story
Yuki has seemingly had a difficult life, as he lives with his grandmother and appears to have moved often throughout his life. While little of this is actually gone over, it has left Yuki with a crippling case of introversion. Yuki is so crippled when it comes to communicating with others that any time he is put on the spot, he envisions himself drowning while making a horrible face to the people he is trying to speak with.

tsuritama-review- (1)

After moving to the small island of Enoshima, Yuki is given another chance to try and make friends and live a relatively normal life. However Yuki isn’t the only one arriving at Enoshima, as a bubbly teenage boy named Haru has shown up and not only has he chosen to live at Yuki’s house, but he has claimed to everyone he meets that he is an alien. While everyone laughs this off as simply a joke at first, it quickly becomes clear that Haru is far from normal.

Despite Yuki’s introverted lifestyle, Haru begins to draw him out of his shell in an effort to go fishing. To do so Haru ensnares the local fishing celebrity, although he hates being called such, Natsuki. As Natsuki teaches Haru and Yuki to fish, a mysterious Indian named Akira who talks with his duck named Tapioca follows the group around, spying on their activities and reporting to an organization called DUCK who appears to monitor alien movement on Earth and is investigating cases of Bermuda Syndrome which involve boats, planes and people either completely vanishing or appearing in random locations with no recollection of prior events.

tsuritama-review- (3)

Despite the heavy sci-fi elements, Tsuritama presents itself as more of a bonding experience between four men as they learn to fish and grow as people. Although resistant at first, Natsuki accepts the job of teaching Haru and Yuki to fish while Yuki gains confidence in himself and begins to make his first real friends and push through the boundaries of his introverted self as he sets goals for himself and meets them, giving himself a feeling of accomplishment as the four men bond through fishing.

Tsuritama manages to find a nice balance between drama and humor as Haru, Yuki and Akira are usually the comedic relief, though a lot of the humor is hit and miss at best, while dramatic events and character development focus around Yuki and Natsuki. Both of the aforementioned characters have their own internal issues that they must work through and manage to pull through in rather heartwarming manner. Though this ends up leaving Akira as a bit of a side main character who only seems to be useful thanks to his knowledge from the DUCK organization.

tsuritama-review- (4)

Although it may sound a bit scattered, Tsuritama remains quite focused on the overarching alien storyline. Throughout the series there are numerous hints that Haru and his sister’s motives involve fishing while DUCK’s constant surveillance reveals more about the nature of the threat that the Earth could be under if their plans do not succeed. While some of the drama is rather contrived at first, since the alien threat appears minimal at first, it quickly escalates to a point where all four fishermen must put their bonds to the test and push through to potentially save the world from destruction.

Visuals
One thing that will immediately catch viewers’ attention in Tsuritama, especially on this Blu-ray release, is how vivid the color palette of the series is. Everything, from the environments to the character designs, are presented in bright saturated colors that are impressive to see when paired with the excellent animation work done by A-1 Pictures.

tsuritama-review- (2)

As mentioned before, the environment and backdrops in Tsuritama are nicely handled and exceptionally detailed, though it is a bit of a shame that quite a lot of the anime takes place either on a beach or in the middle of the ocean as the set-pieces tend to be rather impressive. The fish designs and the various fishing equipment on display are nicely detailed, though some iffy CG is implemented in the latter half of the series.

Audio
With Tsuritama getting a Blu-ray release, that means that Sentai Filmworks has given the anime an English dub to accompany the original Japanese voice track. The English cast is nothing to write home about, but they do their job well enough that the voice actors manage to match the personality of the characters and help sell the humor a bit more.

tsuritama-review- (5)

As far as the soundtrack goes, the background music in Tsuritama is fitting more often than not, especially in the latter half of the series as things begin to take on a more serious tone. The opening theme  “Tsurezure Monochrome” by Fujifabric is entertaining and matches well with the running ‘Enoshima Dance’ gag that plays throughout the series while the ending theme “Sora mo Toberu Hazu” by Sayonara Ponytail is mildly enjoyable, but easily skippable for those who don’t enjoy it.

Extras
Tsuritama has been given the bare-bones treatment as far as special features go. This means that the only extra on-disc content is a clean version of the opening and ending theme as well as some trailers for other Sentai anime.

Overall
While a fishing anime may be something of a difficult sell at the surface, a well-developed cast of main characters with enjoyable interactions thrown into a sci-fi storyline that takes the backseat for most of the series as the characters grow only to take advantage of that growth at the end of the series helps make Tsuritama worth watching, although some of the humor tends to be hit and miss.

Conquer Mars Preview

Conquer-Mars-Wallpaper-01

Overview
Real time strategy titles come in all sorts of shapes and sizes like StarCraft, Warcraft, Red Alert, Command and Conquer, and Total War to name a few. With these games in mind, Zero Blood Games set out to break the barrier put forth from micro-management and offer three distinct appeals for their title: massive battles, focus on strategy and tactics, easy access (browser based). While many of the previous mentioned titles encompass one or two of these attributes, Conquer Mars incorporates all three to a player’s fingertips for a one time price of $0.00?! A free-to-play indie RTS? I don’t know Fred…

Story
In this particular genre, a story is the propelling purpose in tackling objectives. Conquer Mars takes place on planet Mars in 2075. Earth has seen better days as cooperation and prosperity existed in the early 2000’s for a collaborative effort to mine materials in space. The Earth Assembly and later Space Consortium were two organizations set in place to ensure balance of Earth’s superpowers to mutually gain advancements in other worldly ventures. While many years of peace were know to citizens of both Earth and those dwelling in space, both organizations started to lose power and eventually crumbled to those stricken with lust for money and power. Wars occurred back on Earth, and so the events started a chain reaction in the neighboring planet. Rogue miners and warring factions began vying for each other’s supplies on Mars.

Conquer-Mars-Screenshot-02

How better to gain the upper hand in a space war than to send out drones to battle for you? In 2075, battles are not fought with stick nor stones but with tanks and remote controls.

Gameplay
We have identified that Conquer Mars has shifted away from micro-management ideals by completely wiping the slate clean of it. Resources are a key integral part of the game, but the acquisition of materials is not plagued with creating workers and sending them to do the work. Conquer Mars wants you to feel as though you are the general on the battlefield rather than a foreman dishing out routine jobs. Building structures and sub-structures are out the window as well with only a base structure to add upgrades like turrets or increased revenue to. Thus, by eliminating micro-management the title meets the requirement of focusing on strategy and tactics.

Starting a war should be strategic and meticulous, and so giving the power to create a force instantaneously to the players certainly has its perks. Unlike other RTS’s that make you wait to build units, forces can bought with resources and placed on the battlefield in mere seconds. So as long as the resources are available, units can continue to be built one right after another. And by doing so Conquer Mars met their requirement of creating massive battles.

Conquer-Mars-Screenshot-01

The most important attribute that makes this RTS stand out from the rest is its availability. AAA titles normally cost your three sisters and a goat, but Conquer Mars is free-to-play. No goat giving here! – They can keep the sisters… With that being said the game has a lot to offer those of us that don’t want to spend a fortune to play a game title a few times a year at a LAN party. Did I mention it was browser based? The title takes moments to begin playing, and (BAM!) you are in the game – no extensive load times with under 7MB streaming.

Visuals
Conquer Mars is not by any means graphic intensive yet ultimately serves as a bonus to the efficiency of the title’s gameplay. For those not use to playing internet games, the less you have to load the better. The lack of ‘lag’ can be easily noticed when commanding quite a large fleet (seen below).

As of right now models are few in comparison to the AAA’s but as the project moves along more combat units will be created for competitive play (paid membership) as well as to unlock. For those concerned that they will have a poorer chance of winning against those that purchase newer models right away, that is the point behind competitive play. As I understand it, a paid membership will grant access to the newer models whereas the free-to-play remains unaffected.

Conclusion
I feel that Zero Blood Games has a really good idea to share here. The idea of taking what normally is considered an AAA title and manipulating it to a free-to-play browser game will certainly garner some attention. There are some noteworthy arguments to be made here regarding the direction of micro-management as well as the lack of a campaign to enhance the storyline. With the removal of micro-management, the Conquer Mars enables a sense of ‘pure fighting’ by conjuring large sums of forces in a moments notice. A story in an AAA title will notably shine brighter as more time and effort will be placed in cinematic cut-scenes and campaign modes, but a game that allows you to play up to eight players for free…
