Overview

Bamboo Blade was originally a Manga created by Masahiro Totsuke, it’s a sports/slice of life story that was picked up a few years ago by Australian Anime Distributor Madman. Here we are in 2013 and the Bamboo Blade Series Collection has finally been released. In the time since it’s run there have been a great deal of sports Anime that have come and gone, leaving both good and bad impressions. Let’s dive into Bamboo Blade and see whether or not it holds up in this generation of Anime. Read on to find out.

Bamboo-Blade-Series-Collection-01

Story

I mentioned this just above but I’ll go over it again in a little more detail: The story revolves around a small Kendo Club that can’t seem to catch a break considering one of it’s members continuously quits then rejoins while another two are off fighting other schools and what not. One day the Kendo Club instructor, Toraji, makes a deal with an old friend of his who just so happens to be a Kendo Instructor as well. Toraji’s team would be going up against his “Sempai’s” team in an unofficial tournament, if Toraji wins he gets to eat free sushi for the rest of his life and this is enough for the broke teacher to put his all into turning his team into Kendo machines. This is the overall story despite there being little bits in-between and a whole other arc at the very end of the series. Tamaki is a small, Anime-loving, freshman who displays a great deal of skill in Kendo, Toraji recruits her and they begin their journey to victory and greatness. I would say that, out of all the characters, she is the main focus which really did my head in because she was also the softest spoken character. That’s not a very good combination in my opinion.

Bamboo-Blade-Series-Collection-02

It’s about that time where I would usually say “I don’t want to spoil anything but…”, I won’t be saying that within this review because there is almost nothing to spoil, honestly. It is a very typical, very basic sports Anime and it doesn’t really inspire one to get into Kendo. The team recruits more girls, and two useless guys, as they continue to train throughout the year. They have their ups and their downs as one character is trying too hard, the other isn’t trying hard enough, so very typical. This is why I feel that I don’t entirely need to outline much because their isn’t really much to outline. My beef with this Anime is that, now bare with me on this, it is a story that revolves around a group of young women yet these young women are written incredibly shallow and all around badly.  I can’t stand it when writters create these types of characters who fit into stereotypical tropes and that’s it. Tamaki is a shy girl who basically stays the same throughout the whole series with small bits of character development along the way, she was possibly the most well-written character out of the girls which isn’t saying much. The other girls are very typical; one is hyperactive, one is a drama queen, one is a nice girl with anger issues and so on and so forth. This wouldn’t be half bad if the characters’ stories were fleshed out a little more.

Bamboo-Blade-Series-Collection-03

It’s a shame because Toraji and his old friend were extremely good characters; they were rivals yet friends, they interacted well and you could see a lot of what they learnt in the time between them as students and them as teachers. I just wish the rest of the characters could’ve been like this. I have to say that it did actually make me laugh at times and considering this is a comedy series I have to give them credit for that, the voice actors did a great job but I’ll talk more about that soon. The pacing of the series was also off, it could have been done in a shorter episode count if they took out a bunch of the useless, filler scenes and the unnecessary dialogue that just seemed to “float around”. Some scenes were great in it though! It was just unfortunate that those scenes where few and far apart and really had nothing to do with the main cast.

Bamboo-Blade-Series-Collection-04

Visuals

The series is dated and you can tell that it is but I’m not going to focus on that too much because I feel like if an Anime is done right it doesn’t matter how old it looks. The costuming was great, it looked authentic, it wasn’t too over-the-top and it fit in nice and easy with the slice of life vibe that the series gave off. I’m going to say that the characters designs were also good, they all had their own little features that, somewhat, defined them and it wasn’t too quirky as to put you off from it. Look, the animation was fairly bare bones but it did kick into overdrive when it came to the actual Kendo tournaments which were done very well. I’m not a fan of Kendo nor have a seen any real-life Kendo but it did look fairly realistic if not slightly over-exaggerated, which isn’t a bad thing at all, it’s good to put a little flare into these types of things. There was nothing wrong with the animation, it didn’t need to be extremely detailed and fluid when, most of the time, they were just standing around talking.

Bamboo-Blade-Series-Collection-05

Audio

There wasn’t much music within the series, there were maybe three or four distinct tracks that they used throughout while mixing in other, smaller ones to fill gaps. The voice acting within Bamboo Blade was actually very well done. While a fair few of the characters were quite annoying and had almost monotone voices there were other characters who seemed to make up for what these characters lacked. I was actually very impressed at the skill that these voice actors showed. I love watching an Anime that has an incredible voice cast and a few of these voice actors really help the series up for me. The sounds of Kendo were also fairly realistic, the snap of the wooden swords and the squeeking of bare feet on wooden flooring seemed extremely true to life. I give credit when credit is due, they did extremely well in this aspect.

Bamboo-Blade-Series-Collection-06

Extras

There were no noteworthy extras in Bamboo Blade. It came with the clean opening and closing sequences and a few trailers for other Madman titles. Bare bones which happens to be the norm for Anime releases lately.

Overall

I’m good to put this very simply: It’s NOT a bad Anime. It’s an Anime for fans of Kendo and fans of “slice of life” Anime titles because that is exactly what it is and nothing else. It’s animation is fine, it’s voice acting is fine, even it’s story is fine, it’s just that none of it stands out or is groundbreaking in any way. That’s not to say it’s worth nothing though, it’s still a good Anime and, hey, I didn’t hate it! I actually looked forward to watching it of a night because it was simple and easy and I could follow it while also doing other things, it just didn’t blow me away and I doubt that it will blow a lot of audiences away unless they’re big fans of this type of thing.

The Verdict on Valve

steam-valve-logo-01

Throughout the last week Valve made three big announcements, dishing a little bit of dirt on three forthcoming products that everyone has been suspecting for varying degrees of forever.

First to hit the fan was the Steam OS, an operating system combining the existing Steam client with the Linux operating system. Then came the Steam Machines, trampling over everyone’s established opinion by ditching the word ‘Box’. Lastly came the Steam controller, a logical inclusion to the line-up that inspired Photoshop users the world over with it’s weird little owl eyes.

Now if asked to define myself as a gamer, I’m primarily a console person, but I like and enjoy Steam as much as any other person with a half decent PC. I consistently buy games in the sales and never play them, gazing longingly at some of the titles in my library before booting up yet another session of Civ IV.  I’m not a Steam nut, but I’m not ignorant of it either.

So as a console person with a bit of a PC tint, what do I think of Valve’s triumvirate?

valve-steam-controller-1

The main thing that sticks in my mind is the ballsiness of the controller. Neither Sony nor Microsoft has been particularly innovative with their controllers recently, and Nintendo is off in its own little world as always. Valve’s controller, completely lacking in sticks and instead complete with two touch pads with haptic feedback, is quite clearly staking claim to its own unique patch of turf. Yes it has a touch pad like the PS4 controller, yes it keeps the general shape, but do you see any of the other hardware companies completely ditching a staple of the last three generations of controller design?

Obviously I haven’t used it, so I can’t comment on its effectiveness as a controller, but as a statement of intent I think it’s great. What concerns me about the game industry and even other forms of media is the current trend for churning out more and more of the same old stuff in both software and hardware. It’s safe. It’s boring. That thing up there is not.

What else? Promoting your operating system as free, your hardware as hackable – it flies in the face of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo’s tightly controlled console environments. Valve has a history of inviting their consumers to mod their stuff, and with this hardware release they aren’t abandoning that principle – even the controller will eventually be moddable right down to its wiring. That’s madness to a console gamer, fantastic madness.

valve-steam-controller-2

I don’t know if I’ll get myself a Steam Machine because heck, there’s not enough info yet. But does it look like a viable option to me? Yes. Will it cost me less than a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One? I would bet yes. Are there cheaper prices in the Steam store when compared to the ridiculous Australian games market? Yes.

Steam Machines are unlikely to kill off consoles, and certainly not right off the bat. For console gamers the next Sony and Microsoft machines are always going to have star power, and pending any enormous PR or hardware failures that is not going to go away. People need time to start identifying with a hardware brand, to become an Xbox person or a PlayStation person – or a Valve person. Of course there are already some devoted Valve people out there in the form of Steam’s millions of users, but these are PC people we’re talking about, and they don’t change for anybody.

Voice Over!: Seiyu Academy Volume 1 Review

Voice Over!: Seiyu Academy Volume 1

Author: Maki Minami
Illustrator: Maki Minami
Publisher: Viz Media
Release Date: October 1, 2013
Price: $9.99 – Available Here

Overview
Without good voice actors many industries would struggle to make a name for themselves. However despite being a major factor in any form of animation, the job of a voice actor is rarely explored. However, Maki Minami, a mangaka best known for her manga Special A, has created a new manga series called Voice Over!: Seiyu Academy which focuses on one girl trying to make it in the voice acting industry. Being a silent medium, does a manga about voice acting work well enough to get off the ground in Volume 1?

Story
Ever since she was helped by the voice actress who handled the voice work for the heroine of Lovely Blazers, a magical girl anime she loved as a child, Hime Kino has always dreamed of becoming a voice actress. She doesn’t want to be just any voice actress either, she wants to be able to be the lead voice of the cute cast of Lovely Blazers eventually, but despite taking the first major step towards her dream, there is one thing holding her back.

After being accepted into the special voice acting program at the prestigious Holly Academy, Hime’s abilities are exposed and it is clear from the beginning that it is going to be an uphill battle for her. You see, whenever Hime tries to be cute, becomes nervous or even tries to act out a character her voice comes out sounding like a gruff old man or an animal making snorting noises. After her first attempt at acting, she earns herself the nickname of “Gorilla Princess” and is placed in a group of stragglers with three other misfits.

This group consists of a girl who cannot speak up, a guy who should be popular but speaks with an accent and has dirty habits, and a tough guy who tries to rough up anyone criticizing him or the rest of the stragglers. Despite being placed in this group however, Hime never lets the constant barriers put in her path get her down. It is quite invigorating to watch as she constantly is told that she simply cannot do something or is typecast into another role and she continues to do her best regardless of what others say.

Through the course of this first volume we are introduced to what will likely remain the main cast and a number of side-characters. There are a number of different personalities at play here but it seems that the main male character will be Senri Kudo, the son of Hime’s idol, will be the main male lead. His introduction in this first volume leads much to be desired as, other than his love of cats, he is little more than a typical tsundere that treats Hime coldly except on a few occasions, leaving him as one of the least interesting characters in this volume.

Thankfully, Hime’s constant determination in the face of adversity makes her a noteworthy main character and her personality helps serve as a strong introduction in volume 1 as we see her begin her path to being a voice actress, meet the numerous faces that will play roles from here on out, and establish a few plotlines that will likely be developed over the course of the next few volumes.

Artwork
With Voice Over!: Seiyu Academy Volume 1 we have your standard shojo style of character with a number of handsome looking guys surrounding Hime as well as a few female characters added to the mix with plenty of sparkling and bubbly backgrounds here and there. There are a number of details that help set the manga apart however such as the amount of detail put into Hime’s expressions as a number of panels are full page spreads of her face either thanking someone or being determined.

Now one of the key aspects of this manga is trying to convey the way that these voice actors and actresses sound when they are speaking. Thankfully through the use of font choices and dialogue bubble appearance, Viz has managed to properly portray the way that these characters are meant to sound, with Hime’s rough voice and the various capabilities of other students clearly demonstrated thanks to these two nicely handled aspects. It is worth noting that there does seem to be a bit of damage to artwork in a few panels over the course of the volume, as a few text boxes appear to blot out and obstruct the artwork at times.

Extra Content
At the beginning of each chapter there are a few notes from the author, Maki Minami. This is the followed by a small omake strip placed a few pages into each chapter where the author tells us a bit about her life and her work. Closing out the manga there is a bonus short called “Welcome to Mitchy’s Room” which is followed by some translation notes about some terms used at various places in the volume.

Overall
Voice Over!: Seiyu Academy Volume 1 serves as a great start to the story as Hime’s infectious positivity and determination helps her push through her limited talent and voice. Not only that, Viz has managed to take a sound based story and successfully introduces it through text form through nice font and box usage. Unfortunately the supporting cast is lacking at the moment and the character that is presented as a male lead is as textbook as they come, somewhat hindering what is otherwise a great start to a manga tackling a rarely covered side of animation.

Midgar Launches ‘Edge of Eternity’

Edge-of-Eternity-01

The independent indie Midgar Studio has launched yet another new exciting project on Kickstarter. The new game is ‘Edge of Eternity’ and is expected to be on a whole new level from the studio’s previous games such as the recently released ‘The Secret of the Octopuses‘.

The action of ‘Edge of Eternity’ takes place in a unique and unusual universe which is highly influenced by both futuristic space travel and steam-punk/medieval inspirations. This interesting contrast in the game, is all set in the world of Heryon, where the protagonist is a human adventurer. The adventure RPG game also goes through elements of action, exploration and unexpected situations. The game is based on the classic ‘turn-by-turn’ combat system usually seen in RPGs, but with some innovations added. There is an unique concept for the magic system, it provides the player the ability to customise their devastating attacks by mixing spells.

Edge-of-Eternity-02

The top highlight of the game that completes the experience has to be the Original Sound Track (OST), the music was entirely composed by the Midgar Studio team and recorded by the Paris orchestra. The studio lacks the financial resources  for ‘Edge of Eternity’ and have set the bar at $200,000 in hope we could raise enough funds to to achieve the requirements for more features and innovations for their new game. ‘Edge of Eternity’ has also been posted up on Steam Greenlight for voting. If you like what you’ve seen from the prototype trailer above, support the Kickstarter campaign here.

Montague’s Mount Preview

Montagues-Mount-Logo

Montague’s Mount is a psychological horror game from Irish developer Matthew Clifton, AKA Polypusher Studios. It is the first game to be released by the independent developer, and I had a chance to play through a brief section of it that is is still in an unfinished state.

It is entirely first person, putting players in control of a man who finds himself washed up on the beach of an isolated and mysterious island. Unable to remember anything about himself, players must guide him around the bleak and lonely island to try and uncover its secrets and find a way to escape.

Set for release on October 9, the game will be available on PC, Mac, and Linux. It’s currently sitting in Steam’s Greenlight programme, and is already set to be published on GOG and Get Games. It will also support the Oculus Rift peripheral.

From the outset it is clear that the game is going to be driven by atmosphere, story, and character rather than gameplay. There are puzzles to solve to progress and the island has to be actively explored, but the mechanics of this are simple – you can walk, you can examine, and you can interact.

montagues-mount-screenshot-01

Walking is the first hurdle. Everyone remembers those moments in games when they are forced to walk at a snail’s pace. Often this is used to generate tension, and can work quite well as a technique. Montague’s Mount wants to be generating tension and it does that very well, although through the beautiful but eerie music and it’s graphic style rather than its insistence on walking everywhere. There is a context for it but it is irritatingly slow. A run may not be appropriate here, but a mood killing plod isn’t either. It hurts the rest of the game to move so slowly, and makes traversing back and forth when solving puzzles quite boring.

The puzzles themselves don’t just stick to the usual find an object use an object pattern, but there were points even in the brief demo where I was left wondering what it was I was actually supposed to be doing. There is precious little hand holding in Montague’s Mount, which would be a good thing if it wasn’t such an arduous task to walk from one area to another looking for clues.

Heading back to the music, it is the highlight of the experience as it currently stands. From the get go it is beautiful, with a haunting, beautiful opening piano theme that pulls you with it as you explore the bleak world of the island. It is mournful, simple, and creates an atmosphere that any game like this must have to succeed.

It sets the tone of the game and when the opening voice over comes in things look even better. A male voice, Irish, sets up the main character as a man who knows nothing about himself, where he is, or how he came to be there. The performance is emotive and feels like it’s coming from a real person, not a cipher of a video game character. The actor behind it is Derek Riddell, who voiced Lowell in The Last Story, and has also appeared in numerous TV shows including Ugly Betty.

montagues-mount-screenshot-02

There isn’t much narration present, which is a little disappointing given that the brief moments where the voice work returns are the ones that are the creepiest, chronicling the character’s growing sense of unease as the bleak world begins to take its toll on him. A little explanatory or reactionary work would be great to see too – hopefully the full release will make greater use of its protagonist to add depth to the story and ratchet up the atmosphere.

Sound effects add another layer of eeriness, playing it simple but effective. Birds cawing, wind howling, pelting rain and a thumping heart-beat are all put to good use, although the footstep sound needs a bit of variation to prevent madness (or perhaps that’s the point) and the guy clearly needs a Strepsil – stop coughing!

Graphically the game works well for the most part, and is impressive for an indie title. The film grain effect sits nicely with the story, and the dim lighting, spare use of colour and changing weather all play into a very strong set up. The grimness and the dark are a little wearing given how slowly you have to move through the game, and are yet another reason to hope that the narration becomes more frequent or that character movement speeds up.

montagues-mount-screenshot-03

There are quotes dropped throughout the game and its publicity material that have made it clear that mental illness is going to play a big part in Montague’s Mount, and given the isolated setting and dead bodies everywhere, there is plenty of meat on the bones of a tale that is said to be based on a true story. There are also a lot of religious stones and shrines to be seen littered around the landscape, with crosses over shallow graves and candles lit in places where no living person seems to be. All of the item descriptions and place markers appear first in Irish Gaelic. Clearly Montague’s Mount is a game seeped in the history and culture of its home country, with something of a supernatural or spiritual edge to the tale it has to tell.

Montague’s Mount has some clear issues in its current state, both in the game mechanics and in a few presentational ticks that stop things from running smoothly – to be expected from a preview build. It sounds ridiculous but an increase in walking pace would work magic for this game, as it is the slowness that puts other parts of it under a more intense spotlight. Hopefully this will be ironed out by October 9. There is a strong story hiding in here, with a well built atmosphere and some unique qualities laying a decent foundation for a potential indie hit. Whether it will break out and gain the publicity of the similar Dear Esther is a question for the future. You can help decide by heading over to the game’s page on Steam’s Greenlight programme.

Hands On With Beyond: Two Souls Exclusive Demo

Beyond-New-Banner-01

I was able to get my hands on an exclusive early access demo code for Beyond: Two Souls for the PS3 courtesy of the EB Games’ loyalty program. Check out our hands on preview to see what you can expect from this latest story driven game from the creative team at Quantic Dream. There will be spoilers so those who wish to go into the game blind may want to turn away now.

It is established that the game will take you through a variety of stages in Jodie Holmes’ (the main character’s) life and you begin the game as a young child. If you’ve played Heavy Rain (and if you haven’t you should), you will instantly be in familiar territory. You walk around slowly as Jodie, examining your environment to get a sense of who and where you are. You interact with objects like toy dolls and paintings as a doctor guides you to the experiment room. For the most part it’s pretty linear but things start to get intersting when you get to the room and begin the test.

The first test has you having to match the card this woman in the other room has chosen. How are you going to do that without being able to see the card you may ask? Well thanks to your ghost/entity friend Aiden (pronounced I-den) it’s a breeze and a quick trip into the other room allows you to see the card the lady has chosen and then pick the appropiate card. Controlling your ghost accomplice is rather simple, R2 and R1 to ascend and descend, L2 to do a 180 degree spin and L1 to lock on to certain objects that you can manipulate with your psychic powers. Left stick is move and the right stick is used to control the camera. It takes a bit of getting used to as you enter this floaty first person view, but you will pick it up rather quickly. Aiden can fly, bypass walls and manipulate objects as well as perform other supernatural actions that will be touched upon later.

beyond-two-souls-04

The decision making and branching paths from Heavy Rain is making a very welcome return and comes into play with small decisions like picking the right card and answering questions as well as in bigger events where the outcome might differ if you fail too many cues which could lead to you tripping over a branch or getting punched in the stomach. It’s a great system and means your decisions and skill will have a rather big affect on the story. In terms of the cards, you don’t even have to pick the right one even though you know what it is.

Next you are asked to smash a block tower which is simple enough. You take control of Aiden again and you can pull the two analog sticks down and then release them to send the blocks flying. Now the lady in the other room is getting a bit creeped out and this is where the fun begins. You can manipulate nearly all the objects in the room and the more you fling chairs around, flip over tables and smash glass, the more terrified this lady becomes. You feel an immense sense of power as if you could destroy this woman’s psyche at any minute, you can even go as far as to choke her with your psychic powers. At this point in the story Aiden is still rebellious and seems to be more under the control of you as opposed to Jodie, which means you are free to wreak as much, or as little havoc as you want. I’ll admit I went psycho and it felt pretty awesome. Eventually the doctors all rushed in to help the women and then the game skipped to the next section of the demo.

beyond-two-souls-05

This time I was a much more teenage Jodie in a combat training facility where the game gets you used to the games action sequences. In place of overlaid visual cues, this game has you relying solely on the action on screen to provide you with the information you need to move the stick in the right direction. So say for example Jodie is punching to the right of screen to punch someone in the face, you need to flick the stick right. If someone is swinging at your head, you need to duck by moving the stick down. Surprisingly it work’s quite well and the on screen prompts from Heavy Rain aren’t missed. You get a fair amount of time to assess the screen and pick the appropiate action, so if you fail the prompt you only have yourself to blame.

In other scenarios where you’re just walking around or climbing a mountain, you will be presented with the familiar buttom prompts similar to Heavy Rain and a small white dot normally means an object can be interacted with. The minimalistic approach to the visual cues provides just enough information to the player without distracting from the experience, allowing the player to really engage with the world. A nice feature was that cues will be explained to you if you seem to be struggling. For example I wasn’t aware you had to hold the button down if it is surrounded by a white square but a small image of the controller and the word hold helped rectify the problem immediately.

After that the game takes you onboard a train where it soon becomes apparent you are wanted by the state and the entire police force is coming after you. You manage to escape with the help of Aiden after a thrilling chase both through and on top of the train. You then learn you can possess enemies with an orange glow, which allows you to disorient everyone around them with crazy actions such as shooting their gun. This distraction lets Jodie steal a motorbike which you can then use to escape. What’s really cool is the cinematic camera that still leaves you in control of Jodie’s actions. For example when you first get the bike you drive it from a rather standard driving game view, but then the camera angle then switches to that of the helicopter giving chase to you. Eventually you arrive at a roadblock and Jodie decides the best course of action is to plow right through them. You use Aiden to provide a supernatural shield that leaves you unharmed by the barrage of bullets.

The final part of the demo has you surrounded near a movie theatre in a small town. Jodie hides behind a car while you take control of Aiden and need to protect her. This was probably the most frustrating part of the game as I felt more limited than I should be. I couldn’t flip over the armoured trucks but could flip over certain cars (as long as they wern’t already on fire). Now this was just a demo and I feel like parts of the story were missing, so maybe it is explained at some point that Aidens abilities are limited in some regards and he can’t pick up really heavy objects or something like that. I just would of liked to see more freedom in this type of scenario. You can only possess certain enemies with the orange glow which I found strange as I don’t see why some guys are favoured over others. Eventually one of the S.W.A.T. team members you possess throws a grenade at a gas station causing it to explode. From there I eventually got caught, but then possessed a guy in the car and shot the driver which led to my escape. Jodie tells one of the guys to leave her alone (I cleaned up the swearing a bit) and then the demo ends with a trailer.

While this was my experience with the game, the branching pathways could have easily lead to a different story. For example it seemed possible to fully fend off the S.W.A.T. team in the town and it looked like I could of got caught much earlier when I was in the forest as well which surely would have affected the outcome.

With so many big games out at the moment and coming in the future I was tempted to skip out on Beyond: Two Souls and wait for a price drop, but the experience I had with the small portion of the game was very compelling and has moved the game up to the top of my wanted list. The storytelling was terrific, the branching paths and decisions you have to make keep you engaged and thinking about how you want to progress the story. Technically the game’s graphics look amazing and I only had a few minor frame drops during my time with the game. Sound design was top notch and the game controlled well with no complaints. While a bit more freedom would have been nice, this looks to be another winner from development team Quantic Dream.

Beyond: Two Souls is available from October 9th and the demo will be available to everyone from October 3rd. We recently got the chance to interview David Cage, the Creative Director and writer for the game. You can check out what he had to say about his latest project here.
