Montague’s Mount Preview

Montagues-Mount-Logo

Montague’s Mount is a psychological horror game from Irish developer Matthew Clifton, AKA Polypusher Studios. It is the first game to be released by the independent developer, and I had a chance to play through a brief section of it that is is still in an unfinished state.

It is entirely first person, putting players in control of a man who finds himself washed up on the beach of an isolated and mysterious island. Unable to remember anything about himself, players must guide him around the bleak and lonely island to try and uncover its secrets and find a way to escape.

Set for release on October 9, the game will be available on PC, Mac, and Linux. It’s currently sitting in Steam’s Greenlight programme, and is already set to be published on GOG and Get Games. It will also support the Oculus Rift peripheral.

From the outset it is clear that the game is going to be driven by atmosphere, story, and character rather than gameplay. There are puzzles to solve to progress and the island has to be actively explored, but the mechanics of this are simple – you can walk, you can examine, and you can interact.

montagues-mount-screenshot-01

Walking is the first hurdle. Everyone remembers those moments in games when they are forced to walk at a snail’s pace. Often this is used to generate tension, and can work quite well as a technique. Montague’s Mount wants to be generating tension and it does that very well, although through the beautiful but eerie music and it’s graphic style rather than its insistence on walking everywhere. There is a context for it but it is irritatingly slow. A run may not be appropriate here, but a mood killing plod isn’t either. It hurts the rest of the game to move so slowly, and makes traversing back and forth when solving puzzles quite boring.

The puzzles themselves don’t just stick to the usual find an object use an object pattern, but there were points even in the brief demo where I was left wondering what it was I was actually supposed to be doing. There is precious little hand holding in Montague’s Mount, which would be a good thing if it wasn’t such an arduous task to walk from one area to another looking for clues.

Heading back to the music, it is the highlight of the experience as it currently stands. From the get go it is beautiful, with a haunting, beautiful opening piano theme that pulls you with it as you explore the bleak world of the island. It is mournful, simple, and creates an atmosphere that any game like this must have to succeed.

It sets the tone of the game and when the opening voice over comes in things look even better. A male voice, Irish, sets up the main character as a man who knows nothing about himself, where he is, or how he came to be there. The performance is emotive and feels like it’s coming from a real person, not a cipher of a video game character. The actor behind it is Derek Riddell, who voiced Lowell in The Last Story, and has also appeared in numerous TV shows including Ugly Betty.

montagues-mount-screenshot-02

There isn’t much narration present, which is a little disappointing given that the brief moments where the voice work returns are the ones that are the creepiest, chronicling the character’s growing sense of unease as the bleak world begins to take its toll on him. A little explanatory or reactionary work would be great to see too – hopefully the full release will make greater use of its protagonist to add depth to the story and ratchet up the atmosphere.

Sound effects add another layer of eeriness, playing it simple but effective. Birds cawing, wind howling, pelting rain and a thumping heart-beat are all put to good use, although the footstep sound needs a bit of variation to prevent madness (or perhaps that’s the point) and the guy clearly needs a Strepsil – stop coughing!

Graphically the game works well for the most part, and is impressive for an indie title. The film grain effect sits nicely with the story, and the dim lighting, spare use of colour and changing weather all play into a very strong set up. The grimness and the dark are a little wearing given how slowly you have to move through the game, and are yet another reason to hope that the narration becomes more frequent or that character movement speeds up.

montagues-mount-screenshot-03

There are quotes dropped throughout the game and its publicity material that have made it clear that mental illness is going to play a big part in Montague’s Mount, and given the isolated setting and dead bodies everywhere, there is plenty of meat on the bones of a tale that is said to be based on a true story. There are also a lot of religious stones and shrines to be seen littered around the landscape, with crosses over shallow graves and candles lit in places where no living person seems to be. All of the item descriptions and place markers appear first in Irish Gaelic. Clearly Montague’s Mount is a game seeped in the history and culture of its home country, with something of a supernatural or spiritual edge to the tale it has to tell.

Montague’s Mount has some clear issues in its current state, both in the game mechanics and in a few presentational ticks that stop things from running smoothly – to be expected from a preview build. It sounds ridiculous but an increase in walking pace would work magic for this game, as it is the slowness that puts other parts of it under a more intense spotlight. Hopefully this will be ironed out by October 9. There is a strong story hiding in here, with a well built atmosphere and some unique qualities laying a decent foundation for a potential indie hit. Whether it will break out and gain the publicity of the similar Dear Esther is a question for the future. You can help decide by heading over to the game’s page on Steam’s Greenlight programme.

We recently interviewed the producer of Duel of Champions and it was an interesting conversation, so be sure to check that out here. Hands On With Beyond: Two Souls Exclusive Demo

Beyond-New-Banner-01

I was able to get my hands on an exclusive early access demo code for Beyond: Two Souls for the PS3 courtesy of the EB Games’ loyalty program. Check out our hands on preview to see what you can expect from this latest story driven game from the creative team at Quantic Dream. There will be spoilers so those who wish to go into the game blind may want to turn away now.

It is established that the game will take you through a variety of stages in Jodie Holmes’ (the main character’s) life and you begin the game as a young child. If you’ve played Heavy Rain (and if you haven’t you should), you will instantly be in familiar territory. You walk around slowly as Jodie, examining your environment to get a sense of who and where you are. You interact with objects like toy dolls and paintings as a doctor guides you to the experiment room. For the most part it’s pretty linear but things start to get intersting when you get to the room and begin the test.

The first test has you having to match the card this woman in the other room has chosen. How are you going to do that without being able to see the card you may ask? Well thanks to your ghost/entity friend Aiden (pronounced I-den) it’s a breeze and a quick trip into the other room allows you to see the card the lady has chosen and then pick the appropiate card. Controlling your ghost accomplice is rather simple, R2 and R1 to ascend and descend, L2 to do a 180 degree spin and L1 to lock on to certain objects that you can manipulate with your psychic powers. Left stick is move and the right stick is used to control the camera. It takes a bit of getting used to as you enter this floaty first person view, but you will pick it up rather quickly. Aiden can fly, bypass walls and manipulate objects as well as perform other supernatural actions that will be touched upon later.

beyond-two-souls-04

The decision making and branching paths from Heavy Rain is making a very welcome return and comes into play with small decisions like picking the right card and answering questions as well as in bigger events where the outcome might differ if you fail too many cues which could lead to you tripping over a branch or getting punched in the stomach. It’s a great system and means your decisions and skill will have a rather big affect on the story. In terms of the cards, you don’t even have to pick the right one even though you know what it is.

Next you are asked to smash a block tower which is simple enough. You take control of Aiden again and you can pull the two analog sticks down and then release them to send the blocks flying. Now the lady in the other room is getting a bit creeped out and this is where the fun begins. You can manipulate nearly all the objects in the room and the more you fling chairs around, flip over tables and smash glass, the more terrified this lady becomes. You feel an immense sense of power as if you could destroy this woman’s psyche at any minute, you can even go as far as to choke her with your psychic powers. At this point in the story Aiden is still rebellious and seems to be more under the control of you as opposed to Jodie, which means you are free to wreak as much, or as little havoc as you want. I’ll admit I went psycho and it felt pretty awesome. Eventually the doctors all rushed in to help the women and then the game skipped to the next section of the demo.

beyond-two-souls-05

This time I was a much more teenage Jodie in a combat training facility where the game gets you used to the games action sequences. In place of overlaid visual cues, this game has you relying solely on the action on screen to provide you with the information you need to move the stick in the right direction. So say for example Jodie is punching to the right of screen to punch someone in the face, you need to flick the stick right. If someone is swinging at your head, you need to duck by moving the stick down. Surprisingly it work’s quite well and the on screen prompts from Heavy Rain aren’t missed. You get a fair amount of time to assess the screen and pick the appropiate action, so if you fail the prompt you only have yourself to blame.

In other scenarios where you’re just walking around or climbing a mountain, you will be presented with the familiar buttom prompts similar to Heavy Rain and a small white dot normally means an object can be interacted with. The minimalistic approach to the visual cues provides just enough information to the player without distracting from the experience, allowing the player to really engage with the world. A nice feature was that cues will be explained to you if you seem to be struggling. For example I wasn’t aware you had to hold the button down if it is surrounded by a white square but a small image of the controller and the word hold helped rectify the problem immediately.

beyond-two-souls-03

After that the game takes you onboard a train where it soon becomes apparent you are wanted by the state and the entire police force is coming after you. You manage to escape with the help of Aiden after a thrilling chase both through and on top of the train. You then learn you can possess enemies with an orange glow, which allows you to disorient everyone around them with crazy actions such as shooting their gun. This distraction lets Jodie steal a motorbike which you can then use to escape. What’s really cool is the cinematic camera that still leaves you in control of Jodie’s actions. For example when you first get the bike you drive it from a rather standard driving game view, but then the camera angle then switches to that of the helicopter giving chase to you. Eventually you arrive at a roadblock and Jodie decides the best course of action is to plow right through them. You use Aiden to provide a supernatural shield that leaves you unharmed by the barrage of bullets.

The final part of the demo has you surrounded near a movie theatre in a small town. Jodie hides behind a car while you take control of Aiden and need to protect her. This was probably the most frustrating part of the game as I felt more limited than I should be. I couldn’t flip over the armoured trucks but could flip over certain cars (as long as they wern’t already on fire). Now this was just a demo and I feel like parts of the story were missing, so maybe it is explained at some point that Aidens abilities are limited in some regards and he can’t pick up really heavy objects or something like that. I just would of liked to see more freedom in this type of scenario. You can only possess certain enemies with the orange glow which I found strange as I don’t see why some guys are favoured over others. Eventually one of the S.W.A.T. team members you possess throws a grenade at a gas station causing it to explode. From there I eventually got caught, but then possessed a guy in the car and shot the driver which led to my escape. Jodie tells one of the guys to leave her alone (I cleaned up the swearing a bit) and then the demo ends with a trailer.

While this was my experience with the game, the branching pathways could have easily lead to a different story. For example it seemed possible to fully fend off the S.W.A.T. team in the town and it looked like I could of got caught much earlier when I was in the forest as well which surely would have affected the outcome.

beyond-two-souls-02

With so many big games out at the moment and coming in the future I was tempted to skip out on Beyond: Two Souls and wait for a price drop, but the experience I had with the small portion of the game was very compelling and has moved the game up to the top of my wanted list. The storytelling was terrific, the branching paths and decisions you have to make keep you engaged and thinking about how you want to progress the story. Technically the game’s graphics look amazing and I only had a few minor frame drops during my time with the game. Sound design was top notch and the game controlled well with no complaints. While a bit more freedom would have been nice, this looks to be another winner from development team Quantic Dream.

Beyond: Two Souls is available from October 9th and the demo will be available to everyone from October 3rd. We recently got the chance to interview David Cage, the Creative Director and writer for the game. You can check out what he had to say about his latest project here.

Catwoman will use her whip to attack and be able to pull off advanced acrobatic manouvers.

Check out a full rundown of Catwomans skills and abilities within Infinite Crisis in the reveal trailer below. The Evil Within Shows Extended Gameplay in New 12 Minute Video

The Evil Within is one of the hot new IPs that is coming for both current and next generation consoles, but as good as it looks the information on the game has been somewhat limited with a scant few trailers and just a bit of gameplay revealed so far. But, in an effort to show off even more of the gameplay, publisher Bethesda and developer Tango Gameworks have just put up a brand new 12 minute video.

While the video doesn’t go so far as to spoil too much of The Evil Within by showing off 12 straight minutes, the video does jump around to give a nice idea as to how the game will play. Split into two part, the video covers a little bit of two chapters the Prologue and Perth House to provide more than just a single area of the game. While a little disjointed to show as much as they can, the video does give a good idea of what can be expected when the game finally releases.

Those wanting to watch the gameplay video for themselves can find it embedded below. The Evil Within is currently set to release sometime next year for Xbox 360PS3Xbox OnePS4, and PC.

Deadfall Adventures Shows off CGI Visuals in New Trailer

Deadfall-Adventures-CGI-Trailer-1

It isn’t “commonplace” for games to set their scene using a flaming biplane crashing like a phoenix into an Aztec temple, unleashing an ancient curse, but Deadfall Adventures clearly doesn’t seem like a game that could be described as run-of-the-mill. A new trailer for Nordic Games and The Farm 51‘s latest game for the PC and Xbox 360, Deadfall Adventures, was released today and it certainly isn’t messing around, plunging you straight into the depths of an old Aztec tomb right in the heart of the Mexican jungle.

Deadfall-Adventures-CGI-Trailer-2

When the trailer started, I was unimpressed by the lack of detail that had gone into the Aztec tombs, but as it went on the action just kept on mounting and the visuals became more and more spectacular. From the sheer detailing that went into the light effects on a lone spider-web, to the evil glow of Aztec monster himself, everything looks fantastic.

Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think!
