wakfu-haven-worlds
Ankama Games have just released a brand new update for both of their MMO games Wakfu and Dofus which both introduce a wealth of new content to the games.

The update for Wakfu will introduce 64 Haven Worlds, allows Auctions to be organised for four weeks and even allows players to see which buildings can be built. These building opportunities come with a number variations and possibilities including adding monsters of your choice to your guild’s territory. Of course these possibilities are all made a reality thanks to the newly introduced Haven Worlds.

As for the update for Dofus it is best described as the outbreak of war. The war of guilds has officially begun in Dofus, with guilds having more control over their territory than ever before. Now you can have creative control over the geopolitical landscape of your server baring the responsibility of its evolution and growth.

This new guild focused update is aimed at giving guilds a reason to fight and make alliances by purposely tipping the scales and pushing guilds into war with one another. Of course peaceful guilds are free to go about their business, but a time may come when they must take up arms to protect their state of peace.

You can get the latest updates for both Wakfu and Dofus now to get in on all the wild action and fun.

Another Review

Another
Studio: P.A. Works
Publisher: Sentai Filmworks
Format: DVD, Blu-ray (Reviewed)
Release Date: July 30, 2013
Price: $69.98 – Available Here

Overview
A certain movie franchise in the West started in 2000 which saw a number of people surviving a tragic accident through supernatural forces, only to be killed off in horrific fashion as the movie went on. This franchise went on to create five successful movies in North America, but it is hardly the only work to feature people being murdered by an unknown force. The anime series Another, based off a novel from 2009, has made its way over to North America courtesy of Sentai Filmworks and now that it is available, is it time for another trip down death alley?

Story
Kouichi has just transferred from Tokyo to a school out in the rural town of Yomiyama. The reason for his transfer is because his father has traveled to India for research and he must now live with his grandparents and aunt who live in his mother’s hometown. Unfortunately for him however, right when he transfers into school he comes down with a lung issue that sees him hospitalized for a period of time and even when he is cleared to leave, he is told that he must avoid strenuous activity and must return for regular checkups.

After being visited by the heads of his class 3-3 he seems eager to attend the school, but before that he comes across a strange doll carrying, eye patch wearing, girl named Mei Misaki. Even though she acts strange, he thinks little of it until he attends school and sees that Mei is in the class. However oddly enough, no one seems to acknowledge that Mei exists. As Kouichi begins to hear strange rumors from his classmates concerning a curse upon class 3-3, he continues to interact with the strange Mei.

another-review- (1)

However doing so breaks one of the class’ biggest rules. When his classmates begin to die from horrific accidents and those related to them suffer similar fates, the curse descends on the class. With no one safe from death and their only countermeasure already ineffective, can Kouichi and the rest of the class do to try and prevent the curse from claiming all of their lives? With the whole classroom cursed to die and one dead one among them, can this supernatural force be avoided?

Another plays its mystery well as tiny hints are revealed to the viewer throughout the series. Great mysteries play out over a slow period of time and by misdirecting the viewer multiple times throughout the twelve episode series. With no obvious answers thrown at the viewer, they are able to come up with their own conclusions only to see their decision change as the drip-feed of information continues throughout the series.

That being said, a few strange factors come into play and perhaps one of the most obvious hints that could have been given to viewers near the beginning of the series was held until the final moments simply to lead viewers on. As I mentioned before though, doing so would have ruined the mysterious aspect of the supernatural curse that is levied upon the classroom and considering there is already an unknown force causing deaths amongst the class, a few supernatural elements can be forgiven in an anime that keeps itself mostly set in reality.

another-review- (2)

With friends, family and even teachers dying around them, watching the class devolve from simply interacting with one another as they live out their daily lives, buckle down and try to find ways to put a stop to the curse and eventually devolve into utter insanity makes for an interesting series, especially when the midway point of the series sees a number of character developments as more information is revealed about Kouichi and Mei and how they interact with the rest of the class.

Despite playing a rather nasty trick of holding back a simple element of the story only to give viewers a “shock” revelation in the final minutes of the last episode, Another gives us something rarely seen in the anime industry, a true horror anime. Although some deaths do border on unrealistic in nature and seem to be far too convenient at times, slowly revealing the web of mystery surrounding Class 3-3 draws viewers in even as they gasp at the horrific fate that befalls many of the students.

Visuals
Throughout the series P.A. Works has managed to pull off some rather spectacular animation with Another. Throughout the first half of the series we see many creepy references involving dolls which plays into the current thought process of Kouichi at the time and then the symbolism begins to shift as the class opinions of the curse change.

another-review- (3)

Through the use of great facial animations, especially whenever something horrific happens, alongside atmospheric backgrounds every tense or horrific moment of Another is fitting and never feels forced. As for the death scenes themselves, it is worth noting that the anime does not censor any of the death sequences which means a couple of them can be quite graphic involving a lot of blood and twisted facial expressions as the victim agonizes in their death throes.  This can be rather gruesome to experience which makes the series not for the faint of heart.

Audio
Atmosphere in horror entertainment of any kind is essential to bring viewers to the edge of their seat and surprise them when something terrible happens. By coupling their aforementioned artistic skill with the characters and backgrounds with superb use of background music, which plays off the threats, drama and violence well, or not at all if fitting, Another has just the right atmosphere to bring out the best of the events that take place throughout the series.

another-review- (4)

Being a Blu-ray release, Sentai Filmworks has given Another an English dub alongside the standard Japanese track which is also included with the release. The English cast fits nicely with the characters they play, with Greg Ayres and Monica Rial as Kouichi and Mei working as two strong leads while the rest of the cast handles the insane nature of some characters quite well. As far as the opening and ending themes are concerned, “Nightmare Contagion” by Ali Project serves as the opener while “Anamnesis” by Annabel is the closing theme. The closing theme is especially haunting thanks to the fact that it contains every main and side character in the series during a happier time in their life, which can be very striking after specific events occur as the series continues.

Extras
As far as special features go, Another contains a rather standard offering in the form of a clean opening and ending theme and trailers for other Sentai Filmworks releases. Outside of those basic offerings, an “Another Special” is included with the release but it is worth noting that it is not the OVA prequel episode released a few months after the anime finished airing in Japan.

another-review- (5)

Instead the “Another Special” is a four and a half minute long video with background music that focuses only on Mei Misaki in chibi form as she wears a number of different outfits both with and without her eyepatch. It is a very simple extra but may help cleanse the mind a bit after watching the numerous deaths that occur throughout the series.

Overall
Another may seem like it has taken quite a lot of hints from a certain movie franchise and given the nature of many of the death scenes, viewers will likely be able to draw easy comparisons between the two. However through the use of story building, misdirection, amazing atmosphere and a fitting voice cast Another sets itself apart by creating a horrific experience that, while a bit cheap at times, keeps viewers guessing right alongside the characters in the anime right until the very end.

BUGS vs. TANKS! Review

BUGS vs. TANKS!
Developer: Comcept
Publisher: LEVEL-5 International
Platforms: 3DS (Reviewed)
Release Date: June 20, 2013
Price: $7.99 – Available Here

Overview
The campy science fiction trope has been done a few times before. Giant bugs from outer space invade, and it’s up to we, the few soldiers left, to stand and fight as we repel that alien threat. BUGS vs. TANKS! turns that on its head a bit, but the idea is still there. With famed game designer Keiji Inafune (Capcom‘s Mega Man, Onimusha, Dead Rising) at the helm, how does this Man-versus-Insect game hold up? Is it worthy of your collection or should you squash it underfoot? Let’s find out.

bugs-vs-tanks-ss-01

Story
In the midst of World War II, the battles continue to rage on. It’s been reported that a few battalions of tanks have gone missing. At the end of the day, the headlines in the newspapers simply wrote them off as killed-in-action, but that was not the case. In reality, they were somehow shrunk down. They continued to fight, but no longer was it for the war that had ravaged entire nations – now it was for their survival against insects and arachnids many times their size.

Sergeant, with Ernst and Joachim under your command, you must meet up with the rest of your German tank battalion, secure land and resources, fight for your survival, and discover how to return to your normal size (if that’s even possible)! Who could have done it? Was it the dirty Americans!? We have to find out!

bugs-vs-tanks-ss-02

Gameplay
In BUGS vs. TANKS! you will take control of a single tank on a series of missions as you progress through the world. In this action game, the controls feel responsive and intuitive, with the circle pad controlling motion and turning and the face buttons handling the turning of the turret atop your tank.

One of the unique features about BUGS vs. TANKS! is in the simplicity of the combat. All you have to do is turn your turret toward a bug and the tank will automatically fire. After a brief period to reload, it will fire again. You can manually tell your crew to hold a round without firing, but with proper maneuvering this seems like it has no applicable function.

bugs-vs-tanks-ss-03

Not sure how to slow down a charging ant or moth? If you can turn your tank so the chassis is facing the creature, your machine gunner will lay down cover fire to slow the advancing enemy. This can be a great help when you’re literally getting swarmed or trying to slow down a particularly nasty foe.

Once per mission you also have the ability to send out an SOS signal. This will bring in a few tanks as backup long enough to unleash a volley sure to take down all but the meanest of foes around you.

Another great feature of BvT is the fact that you can collect tanks throughout your missions. Between missions you can change out your body style and turret to that of other tanks you’ve found – and every tank is authentic from World War II. Want to see a Sherman tank with a Panzer turret? You can do that. You can even grant them different paint jobs. Why not throw pink or orange on that bad boy? All of the collection and customization give the game a great deal of longevity and personal draw. Spending a few extra minutes to track down the tank parts on an otherwise short mission often feels like its own reward and seeing how everything plays together is fun in itself.

bugs-vs-tanks-ss-04

The game was also clearly designed with the mobile gamer in mind. Nearly all of the 35+ missions can be completed fairly quickly. Objectives will range everywhere from seek-and-destroy to base defense to resource gathering, and the campaign does a good job of peppering everything throughout so you never get too stale on one type.

Visuals & Audio
BUGS vs. TANKS! is not a particularly fantastic looking game. Environments can feel somewhat muddy and enemy design, while slightly varied, ultimately all feels pretty similar – whether you’re fighting ants, termites, or whatever, they all looks fairly alike and move the same way. Moths, bees, spiders, and the like do a good job of mixing up the boring look of the ground combat though.

While a lot of the enemies and environments in the game feel quite paralleled, the personalized tank design and the hand-drawn character portraits are fun to see. Tank parts can vary wildly and the paint jobs do a good job giving your eyes something new to gander at as well.

bugs-vs-tanks-ss-05

The soundtrack in the game feels like your average military game. Nothing stands out about the music. Sound effects are also fairly straightforward, but they fail to deliver the impact you should feel when a tank fires a round. It is a nice touch, however, that they had the soldiers speaking authentic German for the few phrases they uttered out loud.

Overall
Overall, BUGS vs. TANKS! is quite a lot of fun to play in short, bite-sized chunks. If you play for extended periods it can begin to grind on you a bit. The collection and customization go a long way toward helping this gain lasting appeal, even if the visuals and audio somewhat hamper the experience. If you’re looking for a great B-movie class game (think Earth Defense Force) with a splash of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, you’ll have a blast with BUGS vs. TANKS!

Come August 20th, you can forget Minecraft and you can forget Halo’s “Forge Mode.” The future of sandbox gaming and custom-content will be Disney Infinity‘s Toy Box Mode. Through easily understandable creation tools and an accessible tutorial system, Toy Box mode will have you creating your own custom levels, maps and even entire games from scratch. You can even work alongside your friends to build giant playgrounds that you can then go wild on.

Toy Box Mode was shown a few months ago, and has been the real driving force behind Disney Infinity. The Toy Box looks like it will provide endless hours of fun for kids of all ages, especially if we we are to believe the hype and we really are only limited by our imagination. In a marketplace where Skylanders has proven to be profitable, Disney could have easily just ridden the coat-tails and made a similar experience, however in typical Disney fashion, they are going all out and producing the stuff of dreams.

disney-infinity-screenshot-03

Disney have produced an all-new trailer showcasing some of the amazing things you can make within the Toy Box. The trailer shows off some really impressive stuff, from giant sphinx’s to a pirate ship and even a race track floating in the sky. You can check out the trailer below, and for more information about the Disney Infinity figures and play sets, check out the official site here. With the release just around the corner, stay tuned to Capsule Computers for all the Disney Infinity news as it becomes available.
