XSEED GAMES ANNOUNCES LIMITED NOBLE PHANTASM EDITION FOR FATE/EXTELLA: THE UMBRAL STAR ALONGSIDE NEW TRAILER

Limited Edition of Action-packed Entry in Renowned ‘Fate’ Franchise Will Include Exclusive Hardcover Art Book, Collectible Servant Cards, and 24” by 17” Cloth Poster

Torrance, Calif. – October 5, 2016 – XSEED Games, the independent-minded console publishing brand of Marvelous USA, Inc., today announced that Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star, the highly-anticipated, standalone action title set within the much-beloved Fate universe, will receive a special Noble Phantasm Edition for its release in early 2017 on the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system and PlayStation®Vita handheld entertainment system. The limited bundle will contain a 7.5” by 6.3” hardcover art book featuring over 100 pages of high-quality artwork from Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star, a pack of sixteen collectible 3” by 5” cards depicting each of the game’s Servants, and a 24” by 17” cloth poster, all housed in a custom box.

A newly localized trailer released today showcases the action-packed gameplay and playable Servants that players can look forward to in Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star.

Expanding upon the extensive and much-beloved Fate universe with a standalone story from acclaimed series writer Kinoko Nasu (of Fate/stay night fame), Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star, developed by Marvelous Inc., transpires on the new world of Extella through a diverse cast of “Servants” – ancient warriors of legend and imagination, always at their Masters’ orders – who survived the Holy Grail War that took place on the Moon. In a future ruled by the all-powerful lunar super computer Moon Cell Automaton, these champions now duke it out for dominance over this digital realm, known as “SE.RA.PH.” This story takes place after the events described in Fate/EXTRA, and depicts the world after that previous Holy Grail War.

Players will experience the story of Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star from the independent perspectives of the three heroine Servants and face off against foes from a variety of Fate productions, including characters from Fate/EXTRA, Fate/stay night, Fate/Zero, Fate/Apocrypha and Fate/Grand Order, in fast-paced action. A new form change battle mechanic debuts in this entry to match its series-first gameplay style, transforming the player-controlled Servants and granting them considerable powers that allow them to devastate enemies and take formidable challenges head-on. The game will contain the original Japanese voices with English text.

Developed by Marvelous Inc. and published in North America by XSEED Games, Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star is planned for launch early 2017 for PS4™ and “PSVita” systems. The limited Noble Phantasm Edition has a suggested retail price of $69.99 for PS4™ system and $59.99 for “PSVita” system, while the standard edition of the game will be available for $49.99 and $39.99, respectively. Microïds announces Syberia 3 release date delayed to 2017

Microïds announces Syberia 3 release date delayed to 2017

InitialIy scheduled to launch on December 1, 2016, Syberia 3 is postponed to Q1 2017

Paris, October 5, 2016 – Upon capturing the enthusiasm of many players, the Syberia saga is back for an even more ambitious third opus. Every day,  Kate Walker’s new adventure is polished by the work provided by the development teams to ensure without a doubt that the fans expectation will be rewarded. However, for the reasons explained below, Microïds had to make the difficult choice to postpone the game’s release to Q1 2017.

Syberia 3 is the third opus of a mythical adventure game saga fueled by a rich universe and a strong identity. After the unprecedented excitement we have seen for this game, and we decided to bring even more depth to Kate Walker’s new adventure. “Said Elliot Grassiano, Vice President of Microïds. “We are aware that fans around the world are eager to embody Kate Walker again but we need additional time to provide them with an adventure that can live up to their expectations in this fascinating universe created by Benoit Sokal.”

I am obviously disappointed that Syberia 3 is delayed because we would like to release our games as soon as the storyline is written, but I’m also relieved that Microïds has taken the decision to postpone the game’s launch because it is essential to offer players the best gaming experience possible. We decided to add even more cinematics to this new fiction, more optional narrative sequences as well as new languages for the voice-over, which represents considerable work for teams. “Said Benoit Sokal, founder and creative director of the Syberia saga.

Impersonating Kate Walker, players will benefit from a brand new way to freely explore striking landscapes and circumvent their mysteries and puzzles in ways they have not experienced before.

The story begins when Kate is found left for dead on a shore by the Youkol tribe, a nomadic people caring for their snow ostriches during migration. Trapped, prisoners in the city of Valsembor, they will have to find together a way to continue their journey in a chase against their enemies and unexpected challenges. While at the same time, Kate’s past is catching up with her…

Syberia 3 will be available in Q1 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Mac. It will be fully dubbed in French, Russian, Polish and German with subtitles in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Russian, Polish, Czech, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese,  simplified and traditional Chinese. The original soundtrack is composed by Inon Zur (Fallout 4, Dragon Age, Prince of Persia), who has already scored Syberia 2.

Peter the Great leads Russia in Civilization VI

Peter the Great leads Russia in Civilization VI

2K and Firaxis Games today revealed that Peter the Great will lead Russia in Sid Meier’s Civilization VI, launching on Oct 21st for Windows PC.

Known for his vast reforms and modernizations, Peter the Great has a resume few can match.
Peter modernized Russia at a widespread level – primarily expanding his nation’s naval abilities for both trade and warfare, and gaining access to the Black Sea by capturing Azov from the Crimean Tatar vassals of Turkey. In 1697 he discretely went to Western Europe in the Grand Embassy to examine international affairs.

Peter led a coalition against the Swedish Empire in the 21-year Great Northern War. A historic victory was won in the Battle of Poltava in 1709, but it wasn’t until 1721 that the Baltic belonged to Russia.

As “Emperor of All Russia”, Peter the Great advanced youth and secular education, reformed the nation’s calendar system to fit European standards, prioritized investment in industrial manufacturing, and improved trade relations dramatically. Through intelligence and a strong will, Peter left an indelible mark on Russia.

Boyz n the Hood Review

Boyz n the Hood

StudiosColumbia Pictures
Platforms: Cinema
Release DateOut Now

Overview

Before being called up to review Boyz n the Hood, I had never heard of it nor knew of its prominence. I’m a fan of television dramas such as The Wire and the recently released Luke Cage which both deal with life as working class/underclass African-Americans but somehow missed hearing about this film which was written and directed by John Singleton. In consideration for the recent political and social upheaval in the United States today, thanks in part due to movements such as ‘Black Lives Matter’ raising awareness of police injustice against African American citizens, a classic such as this deserves to be screened once more in a theatre. Not just as a celebration of its craftsmanship or its status as a cult film, but as a reminder of how little things had changed in regards to the lives of African Americans living in the United States in over two decades. I walked down to George St cinemas to watch the In the House screening.

The MCs for the evening were David ‘Quinny’ Quinn and Jason ‘Jabba’ Davis who started off the evening by having a quick game of ‘heads or tails’ with the entire audience. After a couple of rounds, the lucky winner walked away with tickets to go jetboating Darling Harbour. An unusual, but welcome, addition became introduced when Quinny and Jabba sat down to talk about the film. One of the audience members on the night was (I believe) a former journalist who was in the United States during the events of the Rodney King beating and the subsequent Los Angeles riots. He provided an interesting perspective on the themes and narrative elements of the film which I would not have otherwise experienced at a regular screening. An advantage I would not have experienced without the audience interaction which In the House facilitates.

Story

The film follows the life of protagonist Trey Styles (Cuba Gooding) from childhood to young adulthood as he grows up in South Central Los Angeles. Life in these rough and tumble neighbourhoods is far from ideal as we see Tre and his friends, Doughboy (Ice Cube), Ricky (Morris Chestnut), and Chris (Redge Green), as they navigate the dangers of living in this dangerous environment. Luckily, with the guidance and support of his father, Furious (Laurence Fishburne), Tre is able to grow up into a well-educated and conscientious young man. When tragedy strikes, however, Tre is forced to make a choice between the values that his father taught him and the values which he was exposed to while growing up in the hood.

boyz-n-the-hood-screenshot-05

I absolutely loved the script of this film. The narrative has all the hallmarks of a Classical Greek tragedy on the same level of Oedipus Rex. There is an overarching sense of inevitable doom which hangs over the heads of all the characters which evokes the destined downfalls of the protagonists of those classic stories. The dialogue itself was very naturalistic with characters engaging in the African-American street slang which I’ve gotten used to since my foray into The Wire. It grounds the characters and action in a sense of realism which heightens the emotional effect of the narrative. As characters talk about everything from women to sport to the gentrification of African-American neighbourhoods, it all feels like it has a greater purpose and an impact upon the wider plot. The personal drama we see in the hood becomes representative of the systemic inequality which African-Americans face.

The performances from the cast were strong throughout with a couple of actors standing out. Fishburne in particular does an amazing turn as Furious by giving him an intellectual gravitas which is still very much grounded in the reality of the street. Furious is equal parts street smart and politically astute as he gives Trey (and the audience) pearls of wisdom from his experience of growing up in the hood. Gooding also does a good turn in giving emotional depth to Trey as we seem him grapple with the conflicting facets of his personality. On the one hand, we see Trey as the ‘street’ side of his personality as he postures for his friends but we also see his vulnerability when he breaks down to his girlfriend. Both of these actors had the acting chops to create a strong onscreen presence which made for captivating cinema to watch.

boyz-n-the-hood-screenshot-01

Visuals

The visual style of director, John Singleton, is quite creative with his use of montage to create tension. The scene where the film’s penultimate tragedy unfolds in quick cuts between shots of the possible victims and their rescuers trying desperately to save them. The quick cuts followed by the slow motion as the anticipated event finally unfolds is a harrowing experience with tension ramping up to the sequence’s climax. It helps us to see these moments from multiple perspectives and give a sense of uncertainty which a more linear sequence would not have given.

boyz-n-the-hood-screenshot-02

Audio

The film’s score features an eclectic mix of jazz and more urban pieces. A lot of the diegetic music fits the tone of the misé-en-scene with the heavy use of Rhythmn and Blues, Rap, and Hip Hop. The films creates a soundscape for the street and the ‘hood’ by using these pieces as an audio cue for its audience as well as paying homage to the musical works which manifested in these environments. The rest of the score features a brooding jazz score to generally heighten the tension the audience feels as the story unfolds.

boyz-n-the-hood-screenshot-03

Overall

I very much enjoyed this film and was very glad to see it up on the big screen. The story may set itself in the poorer neighbourhoods of L.A., but its soul comes from the same tragic line as the works of Sophocles. The director’s visual style helps to reinforce the tension of the film’s narrative with montage. The film’s soundtrack similarly reinforces the tension and themes of the narrative through a mix of jazz and hip hop pieces. This film gives a confronting account of life in these marginalised, African-American communities but does so with great style and talent. This film is a masterclass on how politics and the cinematic art can come together to make a statement about the world we live in. It’s a film which I’ll definitely sing the praises of to my friends, and one that I have no problem recommending to anyone who wishes to watch drama which is a bit heavier. Kudos to the In the House for screening this film!

13AM Games is an upstart video games studio based in Toronto and earned success with its debut game, Runbow. All nine members came from different backgrounds with a common goal: design games that are as much fun to play as they are to make. They all met in the Game Design program at George Brown College and the rest, as they say, is history.

Sentai Filmworks Acquires the ‘Squid Girl’ Anime

Squid-Girl-06

Sentai Filmworks announced today that they have acquired the rights to the entire Squid Girl anime series. This includes seasons one and two and the OVAs. Sentai Filmworks’ license not only includes the right to distribute the series on home video, but also includes television broadcast rights as well. It has not been revealed if this means that the series will be broadcast on Adult Swim’s Toonami block.

Sentai Filmworks describes the series as follows:

The cutest little tentacle-haired invader from the sea, Squid Girl, has come to subdue humanity! Unfortunately, she’s in hot water with the Aizawa siblings after a demonstration of her squid powers destroys their restaurant, the Lemon Beach House. Now, she’s forced to work as a waitress for them until she pays off her damages. Between her aquatic puns, bickering with the Aizawa sisters, tiffs with customers, and the many misadventures that come with seaside life, Squid Girl has her hands, and her tentacles, full!

The original manga series was drawn by Masahiro Anbe. It was serialised in Akita Shoten’s Weekly Shounen Champion from 2007 to 2016. Tsutomu Mizushima directed the anime adaptation and Michiko Yokote handled the series composition. Mizushima and Yokote both worked on the original anime series Shirobako. Diomedea produced the animation for the series.
