ratchet-clank-into-the-nexus

Gamescom 2013 has brought out more footage for the highly anticipated Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus. This new clip is all about the gameplay, in which creative director Brian Allgeier walks us through to show us just how this new instalment will function.

While I do enjoy the franchise, Into the Nexus appears to be a bold statement from Insomniac, putting our heroes back to form in a brand new adventure that resembles the gameplay stylings we all know and love. You can check out the video down below, and expect the game to hit shelves this holiday season for the Playstation 3.

Director’s Cut for Clive Barker’s Nightbreed due out in 2014

nightbreed-art-01

Clive Barker’s Nightbreed has been a hot topic in circles of fans, who have been craving a better release of the film for years that would be more true to the original book, Cabal. A fan-driven movement has even taken place, but as usual, Shout! Factory have come to the rescue and will be delivering the film in full as a extended director’s cut thanks to a deal that has been struck as of recent with Morgan Creek.

Here are some words from Barker himself, as well as Shout! on this huge feat from the official press release:

Clive Barker said, “I had a dream about the tribes of the moon. They would live in a city called Midian and, though they were monsters of every shape and size, they would be the heroes of a movie called “Nightbreed.”  However, when I made the movie, the studio was not comfortable with this inversion of the classic structure. They wanted the monsters to be simple-minded scare machines, while I wanted them to be the dark side of all of us, mysterious and misunderstood.  Finally, with this new version of “Nightbreed,” which contains over forty five minutes of previously unseen material, my original vision has been realized. Come with me to Midian, the city of monsters. The tribes of the moon await us.”

“We are excited by this opportunity with Morgan Creek and are huge fans of Clive Barker. His cinematic works and brilliant storytelling continue to captivate fans worldwide,” stated Shout! Factory’s founders in a joint statement. “We look forward to working closely with Clive to bring his original vision to life.”

Shout!’s SCREAM FACTORY plans an aggressive rollout of “Nightbreed” extended director’s cut  through physical home entertainment releases and a variety of digital entertainment distribution platforms sometimes next year.

“We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank the fans,” noted Robinson. “Without their hard work and persistence, this would have never become a reality.  Clive Barker is one of the greats, and we are tremendously proud and excited to be working with him and Shout! Factory on this release.”

Not a bad deal at all, and this time next year, we will all have the option to pick up the long-awaited director’s cut of Nightbreed – the way it was intended to be seen. The DVD/Blu-Ray is due out in 2014, and stay tuned, as once an official date drops, we will be sure to bring out an update.

EA Sports UFC Pre-Alpha Gameplay Revealed

EA-UFC-Pre-Alpha-01

During the EA Gamescom 2013 press briefing, EA Sports UFC creative director Brian Hayes was introduced to talk about the title – which will be in development for a further 9 months – and show off first-ever, pre-alpha gameplay footage.

The presentation can be viewed embedded at the bottom of this article. UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones, and number one contender to the title, Alexander Gustaffson, were used as the in-game models for the demonstration. Players should truly “feel the fight” with all these ground-breaking features – some of which were the focus of the demo – powered of course by the EA Sports Ignite engine:

  • MMAi – A mixed martial artist’s mind is as important as his heart. Every licensed fighter in the game will have changing goals and fight plans, based on their real-life tendencies and each fight situation.
  • Real-Time Exertion – Real-Time Exertion brings each moment of action to life in your gameplay experience. Through real-time vein popping, skin discolouration, muscle flex, as well as signs of fatigue setting in through the course of each round, players will witness the effort it takes to be one of the best fighters in the world.

  • Fighter Likeness and Facial Animations – Fighters in the game have been created from high-resolution 3D head scans to deliver revolutionary character likeness and authenticity. Powered by EA Sports Ignite, new facial animation technology delivers more expression and emotion than ever before in gaming and will communicate an unparalleled sense of awareness and intelligence in the Octagon.
  • Full Body Deformation – The team that revolutionized sports by bringing authentic physics to Fight Night changes the game again with an all-new, full-body deformation system that moves and displaces the fighter’s flesh in real time. For the first time, the strength of every submission and power of every strike will truly make an impression.
  • Precision Movement – The Precision Movement locomotion system grounds the fighters, eliminating unrealistic slipping and sliding across the canvas. More realistic physics-driven movement delivers more realistic action as the overall transfer of energy from the ground up delivers more impactful and believable strikes and take-downs.

  • Dynamic Striking – A dynamic environment allows players to pull off jaw-dropping moves using the Octagon, including roundhouse kicks, superman punches and much more. Combine those abilities with the best striking technology in the industry and that one perfect strike could change the fight.
  • Strategic Submission Battles – EA Sports UFC reinvents the ground game to create a battle for position and control that captures the strategy of a submission battle. Like the real sport, in EA Sports UFC fighters will work through multiple stages as they work to advance or escape from a fight-ending submission.
  • Real Damage – EA Sports UFC introduces a non-linear damage system which can result in big damage coming from a single strike. The system produces a greater variety of cuts and contusions that is true-to-life and has never been possible in a simulation fighting game.

EA Sports UFC is tentatively scheduled for release in Autumn 2014 (southern hemisphere) for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Shuhei Yoshida Demonstrates PS4 UI Live at Gamescom

PS4-Interface-02

President of Sony Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, started off the Sony Gamescom 2013 press briefing by sitting in an antique armchair – surely where he simultaneously games, smokes cigars and drinks cognac from at home – and demonstrating the PlayStation 4 user interface, live.

You can view the video embedded at the bottom of this article. Although a somewhat inauspicious opener (which followed an 11 minute delay and a further 2 minutes of nothing), the demo gave us a good indication of how we will move between points of interest on the console. Yoshida silently walked us through viewing a ‘Live from PlayStation’ feed of Killzone: Shadowfall, to almost seamlessly joining the game in progress (the transition took about 8 seconds) and finally, uploading a screenshot post-gameplay, which he titled “Let’s start the show”, leading into the rest of the presentation.

Sony also dropped the details we were waiting for on the PS4’s release schedule. For more on Gamescom 2013 coverage, stay tuned to Capsule Computers.

The Sims 4 Revealed, First Gameplay Inside

Games-The Sims 4

After being announced months ago, The Sims 4 has been officially unveiled at the EA Gamescom 2013 press briefing in Cologne, Germany. The reveal came with a live-action/CG mix trailer, and later, a first look at some of the new gameplay elements in this fourth main entrant in the definitive life-simulation series.

The EA Maxis team promises many improvements to the building tools, with a smarter interface that allows you to simply push, pull and place the rooms of your house to your heart’s content. Need to move an entire module, furniture and all? Now, you can do that. Before you even buy a home, you need to create a Sim, and in The Sims 4 you will have 18 touch points where you can shape individual parts of your Sim’s physique (get your minds out of the gutter), so models are no longer thin by default. One big element being pushed by the developers is the emotional states…

The-Sims-4-Emotional-01

Sims will become depressed, angry, bored, and experience so many more emotions based on the actions you and those around them. No feeling is either good or bad, as each will allow state-specific opportunities. For example, if your Sim is a musician, and is in an especially furious mood, they will write a heavy, metal song that could launch their career! Sims can also multi-task, as the example of talking while using the treadmill demonstrates in the image above. There is so much more EA are waiting to talk about, but for now, you can check out the reveal trailer directly below and the first gameplay footage – showing what was described above – embedded at the bottom of the article.
