Overview

“Le Transperceneige” or “Snowpiercer” is a comic book/graphic novel that has only just been released in English despite it being around for quite some time – in fact, enough time for their to already be a motion picture loosely based on it – though up until now it has only ever been in its original language; French. Titan Comics have jumped onto the chance to have this comic published and distributed all around the world and for that we thank them. Taking the apocalypse to where it has never been taken before, “Snowpiercer” mixes elements of sci-fi with an overall theme of class mistreatment. It’s quite the intelligent comic that has earned much praise from the masses, we’ll soon see why that is.

Snowpiercer-Volume-1-Screenshot-01

Story

The Snowpiercer is (or used to be) a luxury locomotive before it was the juggernaut train that hosted what is left of the human race. A global catastrophe forced the known world into a all-encompassing ice age which subsequently forced the survivors onto the previously prepared sanctuary known as the “Snowpiercer”. Quite odd; not only was it already called the “Snowpiercer” before the snow actually took its rule but the liner was already prepared with an abundance of supplies just as the “cold front” hit…is it a story fumble or a case of smart mystery writing? The answer to that question is the one that doesn’t put you off reading the comic.

Snowpiercer-Volume-1-Screenshot-02

At the very back of the thousand-and-one carriage train live the third-class citizens, they’re basically a bunch of paupers who weren’t necessarily at that level of social status before the calamity but, considering they weren’t top shelf business men or aristocrats, that’s what they are now. Peasants. Proloff is a man who has recently made it out of the tail and has set his sights on the further carriages. Having survived the massacre many years ago that had the military mow down and get rid of as many citizens of the tail as they could, he now knows of the evil intent that the leaders at the front of the train hold within them. Making his way through the carriages and class systems, he intends to reach the engine room and try to figure out just what is going on in this damn train, and just what he needs to do to have it all stop.

Snowpiercer-Volume-1-Screenshot-03

I’ll outline the bad before I get to the good and sine there is more good than bad you’ll thank me for getting it out of the way quickly because the bad…it’s not so bad: It has quite a slow style of pacing. Now I wouldn’t go as far as to say that there were elements that were boring or scenes that were unnecessary, I just found that the volume in general dragged on just a little bit, nothing to drive a reader crazy but just enough for one to note it. It must be mentioned that this is the first of two volumes to which I assume the second volume will have a great deal more than the first seeing as the first left off with quite a cliffhanger. “The Escape” is a setup story essentially, it explains what it needs to and gives a nice basis for everything that goes on.

Snowpiercer-Volume-1-Screenshot-04

For someone like me that is a fan of action comics it can be a bit of a chore to sit through slower more spaced out titles but luckily for me “Snowpiercer” has some nice writing so I didn’t mind its sluggish pacing. I guess another thing that I didn’t particularly like was its lack of memorable characters, it’s basically just Proloff for most of the volume which is fine considering he’s somewhat of a lone wolf but I just didn’t like the idea of characters being introduced to then fade into the background so easily. As I mentioned, the actual dialogue was written/translated quite well. There were no boring conversations and each piece of dialogue that had the intention of being intelligent WAS intelligent but not to a degree wherein which it would loose audience members. There’s a fine line and it seems like Jean-Marc Rochette walks it beautifully.

Snowpiercer-Volume-1-Screenshot-05

Artwork

“Snowpiercer” happens to hold some fantastic illustrations that both ooze style yet seem oddly realistic. Despite the fact that there is absolutely no colour between these pages, scene just seem to pop off of the page like none I’ve seen before. Unfortunately some comics fall into a “no colour” trap which saves time for them as they create it but doesn’t look anywhere near as good as their vibrant counterparts…”Snowpiercer” does NOT do this. Each panel seems to have been done with as much precision and detail as the last and it is consistent throughout the entire comic. It has a traditional feel to it as well though it is clearly a modern comic, it blended both past and present in a satisfying way. It’s safe to say I really couldn’t take my eyes off of this comic, I constantly got stuck on certain pages strictly because I was looking at the illustrations within them as thoroughly as I could. I was simply taken by how good this comic looks.

Snowpiercer-Volume-1-Screenshot-06

Overall

Apart from some small little things that I didn’t particularly like, “Snowpiercer – Volume 1: The Escape” is comic book/graphic novel that I would consider to be absolutely fantastic. It’s interesting, it’s thought provoking and it puts a unique spin on quite a real theme. Yes it does lack a certain “pizzaz” when it comes to characters and, yes, it does lack a certain dynamic pacing but those are two little things that stop it from being perfect, they don’t stop it from still being a great comic. I would honestly recommend it to any comic book or graphic novel fan, if not for the story than absolutely for the art style. It doesn’t really host any elements that would entirely put a person off of reading all the way through it so I can’t see why anyone wouldn’t. I loved it and I honestly cannot wait for Volume 2 to be released.

Nobunagun Episode 5 Impressions

Nobunagun-Episode-5-01
Sio and Jack reporting for shipping…I mean duty

Nobunagun
Gun No. 5: The Second Platoon!

Having bested the perils of a hurricane last episode, and once again proven her potential, it’s time for Sio to take her place as a full member of DOGOO. As Sio comes to terms with her new living conditions, which just so happen to be in some sort of airship, we get to see just how strange the E-Gene Holders truly are. Though what else would you expect from people who essentially have two souls?

Following the rules of anime, the division in which Sio is placed just so happens to be that of Jack, Gandhi, Newton and Galileo (now known to us as Adam, Mahesh, Jess and Galiko). Strange how they were all the characters introduced thus far isn’t it? However, as noted by the Commander and Capa, the unit is not one she would typically be assigned to. Again, anime rules in full effect. Rather than join a support squad, Sio is placed in a combat platoon to undergo a trial by fire. This action serves to cement the notion into our minds that, though she herself is a novice, when undergoing her mental rush and falling into the mindset of Nobunaga himself, she is a tactical genius. Though the E-Gene powers are sporadic at best, from what we’ve seen, Sio seems to have a much stronger connection to her previous life than anyone else. Though other Holders also change when utilising their powers, Sio’s ability to draw directly from Nobunaga’s memories and the totality of her transformation carry an air of danger that the others do not.

Nobunagun-Episode-5-02
Definitely friendlier than a handshake…

On the topic of E-Gene personalities, we have Jess. She’s a lot more…friendly than originally indicated. When not in combat mode, Jess has a habit of greeting people with a kiss…a French kiss. Not what you’d expect from the powerhouse we saw stamp an EIO into submission. Though this is yet another example of just how infectious the E-Genes can be when activated. The same is also true of Jack to a lesser extent. Though already brash and aggressive, his temperament is tweaked a little in the midst of battle, generally represented by his habit of licking his lips. However, it’s also interesting to note that the personality shift can be permanent. Mahesh begins to tell a story, that is so rudely interrupted by an EIO, about how he was not always as friendly as he is now. He believes that Gandhi’s spirit has had a calming effect on him, on that carries on regardless of whether he is using his AU weapon. I’m curious to discover his previous disposition, to see the extent of Gandhi’s influence.

Nobunagun-Episode-5-03
Relax, I’m a scientist

Amidst the insanity of the Second Platoon and their strange relationships, we also begin to learn more about the ever present Evolutionary dangers. Scientists John Hunter and Vidocq perform a little neural exploration to determine the method through which the creature communicate. Though of course, research requires material on which to experiment, leading to the Second Platoon’s first official mission with Sio on board. Though rather brief, it showcases Sio’s status as a novice, still requiring the support of the entire team in order to make a shot. That being said, it also expresses how, though they haven’t known her for long, the Second Platoon is more than willing to aid their newfound ally. The rather quiet inclusion of Dai Zong also showed how E-Gene Holders are dispatched to where they are most needed, even working with other platoons. Combined with the presence of support specific soldiers, such as Gallileo, DOGOO is revealed to be an organisation prepared for a variety of situations. It also proves that DOGOO (the rabbit looking alien) possesses incredible foresight, having gather the E-Gene souls from across time. However, despite those great decisions, the alien is not all knowing, as the fruits of the Second Platoons mission revealed. There is still much to be learnt about the Evolutionary threat, information that just might save the world.

Nobunagun-Episode-5-04
Maybe they just want to be friends?

So with Sio settling in as much as she can with a bundle of quirky characters, it would seem that the Second Platoon just got a little bit stronger. Though the threat of human supplantation remains ever present,it was nice to take a respite from the carnage and view the people behind the powers. Hell, the fact they have names of their own was a good enough start…though they still seem to talk about each other via their nom de guerres. I guess we’ll have to wait and see just how friendly the Second Platoon get with each other, though their default settings are way above that of normal people. In all honesty it has to be one of the most sexually charged outfits in DOGOO…though I could be proven wrong. I guess we’ll find out when the other divisons are revealed.

Score a Touchdown with Disney Infinity

disney-infinity-super-bowl-screenshot-02

Today’s the big day, the Seattle Seahawks are as we speak charging against the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII. This is big news, but you know what is bigger? That the guys over at Disney have created a brand new Toy Box for Disney Infinity players to download and try out.

Now before I get the torrent of outcry – Super Bowl and the Toy Box are very much related. How, you might ask? Well because this special Toy Box is titled “The Big Game,” and is made to capture the spirit and frivolity of the Super Bowl. The map includes a football arena where up to four people can charge, tackle and punt their way to victory. Also included are a race-track and a show-stopping halftime show.

We have put up a little trailer for the video below. Check it out and then boot up your game and download this limited time map. If you are looking for more Toy Boxes to explore, then be sure to check out the weekly Toy Box Challenge and remember to stay tuned to Capsule Computers for all the Disney Infinity news as it becomes available.

And then there was music. After hyping up the characters and environments, Konami and Mercury Steam have yet again dropped another piece of the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 promotion with an extensive behind the scenes look at the score for the game. Araujo has returned to produce this symphony at Abbey Roads Studios, which is the largest orchestra ever utilized for a video game soundtrack to date.

You can check out the clip and get a first listen below, and keep in mind that we are now under a month away from the release of Lords of Shadow 2. It is quite a treat for all.

Goro Miyazaki to direct TV anime ‘Ronia the Robber’s Daughter’

ronia-the-robbers-daughter-poster-01Famed Studio Ghibli director Goro Miyazaki has been confirmed to direct a TV anime series called Ronia the Robber’s Daughter based upon the Swedish children’s fantasy book of the same name.

Goro is of course the son of anime icon Hayao Miyazaki and has previously directed anime films such as Tales From Earthsea and From Up On Poppy Hill.

Ronia the Robber’s Daughter will be produced by Polygon Pictures in collaboration with Studio Ghibli. This marks the first time that Studio Ghibli has produced a TV anime series. The series follows a young girl named Ronia who is the daughter of a leader of bandits. She often wanders a nearby forest to study the wonders and creatures that reside within it.

The series is set to premiere in the Fall 2014 anime season on NHK in Japan. Stay tuned for more information on Ronia the Robber’s Daughter as it comes to light.

New Fate/stay Night Anime Has a Key Visual & More Info

fate-stay-night-ufotable-visual
Type-Moon’s popular visual novel, Fate/stay Night, is getting another anime adaptation by studio ufotable and a key visual has been posted on the official website.

From left to right the image features the Servants of the 5th Holy Grail War; Assassin, Berserker, Lancer, Saber, Caster, Rider and Archer. The visual also confirms the previously mentioned air date of Fall 2014.

In an interview in Type-Moon Ace Magazine, it was revealed that the scenario is half-way done with the original writer, Kinoko Nasu, present during meetings. Nasu is said to provide new information that wasn’t included in the original.

There are also unconfirmed rumours that Nasu has prepared an original route for the new anime, but take this with a grain of salt until official confirmation.

A debut trailer was posted late last year. Studio ufotable has previously worked on other Type-Moon adaptations such as The Garden of Sinners and Fate/Zero.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie -Rebellion- Review

madoka-magica-rebellion-boxart

Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie -Rebellion-
Studio: SHAFT
Publisher: Madman
Format:
Cinema
Release Date: Feb 1, 2013

Overview
The Madoka Magica series has become almost synonymous with the modern face of anime, sitting alongside lauded titles such as Steins;Gate. Even if you haven’t seen it or perhaps dislike it, chances are you’ve seen the pink-haired Madoka cluttering the anime scene somewhere.

Ironically, it’s also become the face of the once-innocent magical girl genre despite its unorthodox take by the author of Fate/Zero, Gen Urobuchi. It is now Madoka Magica, not Sailor Moon or Cardcaptor Sakura that comes to mind when thinking of magical girls, especially among newer anime fans.

After a TV series, SHAFT set about creating two recap movies that summarised the anime. As for this third film, an entirely new scenario was written, doing what many anime films fail to do; to take the franchise into the unknown.

Madman has brought over the third and final film to Australia and New Zealand during a one-day screening, and we were fortunate enough to form a contract with Kyubey and take a gander.

madoka-magica-rebellion-screenshot-03

Story
Like with many films that continue a story, you must watch either the TV anime or the two films preceding Rebellion in order to understand what exactly is going. Even then, you’ll be a little disoriented going into the movie. True to the style of Madoka Magica, the film confusingly begins anew despite being set after the world-rending events of the second film.

Everything that fans are familiar with such as Madoka’s heart-warming family, her desperate and single school teacher and her friends Sayaka, Kyoko, Mami and Homura are all there safe and sound.

Without spoiling any key plot points, I can say that the viewers will be led on an intense journey through the spectacularly drawn Mitakihara City and beyond. While everything seems ideal at first, the secret of the world is far more sinister and illusory than we’re led to believe. The focus is on Homura, who previously sacrificed everything for the well-being of Madoka and is now faced with the same challenge albeit in a way no one can expect. The love between the two, often a running yuri-romance gag, isn’t a laughing matter anymore. As you’ll see, their bond even transcends universal law.

madoka-magica-rebellion-screenshot-02

Interspersed with the series’ signature dose of despair, Rebellion offers some elaborate action scenes. With the Witches gone following the conclusion of the TV anime, the girls now battle Nightmares – hardly a challenge in comparison and which gives us a false sense of security. One highlight is the long-awaited grudge match between Homura and Mami which is one of the coolest, more outrageous battles I’ve seen recently.

The conclusion, while epic in proportion, could be a mixed bag for some viewers. We had a huge information dump during the anime, thinking we know it all now, but this movie turns everything upside down and dumps even more. The ending is unpredictable, almost shocking, and is once again left more than a little open. Is this really the last we’ll see of Madoka Magica?

madoka-magica-rebellion-screenshot-05

Visuals
The are two sides of the anime community. One who adores SHAFT’s animation and the other who despises it. OK so there’s probably a neutral group somewhere in between, but the point is that this is SHAFT territory through and through. Quick cuts, head tilts and twisted, hand drawn backgrounds that look like the result of a fatal acid trip. The beauty of Madoka Magica, and the high budget nature of this film, is mixing these elements with top-notch animation and powerful directing which makes it incredibly hard to look away for one second.

Fans will lap the visuals right up, and those walking in without seeing the anime before will still be enraptured by the stylised action and fascinating environments. The environments are sure to be of interest to any aspiring architect. An unfamiliar city that mixes futuristic designs, modern Japanese influences and old European cathedrals. It just looks like it’s from another dimension. No matter your opinion, there really isn’t anything else like it out there.

madoka-magica-rebellion-screenshot-04

Audio
I’m a sucker for good music in anime, and Madoka Magica would have been half of what it was without the enchanting score by Yuki Kajiura. Rebellion is no different, introducing an entirely new sound track and dropping some of the previously overused themes. The result is simply a pleasure for the ears, creating a powerful effect when combined with the visuals. A mix of instruments including French accordion, flutes, violins and even heavy guitar during action scenes will have you trying to hunt down the official soundtrack after seeing the film.

The movie’s theme songs, “Colorful” by ClariS and “Kimi no Gin no Niwa” by Kalafina, stay true to aural experience since we saw the first episode of the TV series and sound just as good as you’d expect.

The Japanese voice actresses performed superbly as expected, going from a range of emotions; cute and lively to teary and full of despair. Having only recently been released in Japanese theatres, Madman currently didn’t have an English dub prepared which is more than fair considering how quick Aussies are able to see it.

madoka-magica-rebellion-screenshot-01

Overall
While having enjoyed the Madoka Magica anime a few years ago, I was never a committed fan per se. But seeing how intense of a continuation that the creators came up with, shown within the span of two hours in a feature film, is simply phenomenal. It’s looking better than ever by the third film, with eye-opening action scenes while retaining the philosophical nature of the plot, especially during the second half.

Madoka Magica is a twisted fairytale, a polar opposite of your typical Disney flick or Studio Ghibli film. Rebellion combines the best of what we’ve seen in the series packed into a very well paced two hours. The animation and music all come together so well that you’d be impressed, fan or not. The conclusion, however, might be a little baffling for many fans or brilliant for some. Perhaps both.

With the addition of Rebellion, the three Puella Magi Madoka Magica films have become mandatory viewing for fans and an important experience for everyone else.

Dead Island and Toy Soldiers: Cold War added to Games with Gold

Dead-Island-Screen-01

This month there are two additions to the Australian Games with Gold program on Xbox 360 courtesy of MicrosoftDead Island and Toy Soldiers: Cold War. The former will be free from now until the 16th (RRP $29.95) and the latter will be free from the 16th to the 28th (RRP $14.95).

Dead Island‘s game designer Maciej Binkowski was recently honored for his contributions to the horror genre, with the title being a prime example of his work. In August last year, the next entry in the series – Dead Island: Epidemic – was announced as a ZOMBA (Zombie Online Multiplayer Battle Arena). Toy Soldiers: Cold War is a playful homage to the 80’s action toys and films, offering control of a full arsenal of U.S. and Soviet units.
