Scuba Diver Adventures: Beyond the Depths Review

Scuba Diver Adventures: Beyond the Depths
Developer: Biart
Publisher: Chillingo
Platforms: iOS (iPad) – Reviewed on iPad
Release Date: 9th of May 2014
Price: Free – Available Here

Overview
Earth. Birthplace of the human race and countless other creatures that call this big blue marble home. In reality however, only 30% of Earth is actual earth, leaving a whopping 70% covered in water. With this majority rendered uninhabitable to us air breathers, it’s no wonder people became curious. Thus scuba diving was born. Now people from all over dive down into the depths, intrepid folk who carry a sense of adventure. However, if you’re lacking in said department, why not just take a virtual tour of the ocean floor? It’s just like the real thing, except with a lot less water.

Story
You are Nicole Lourie, a decisive journalist constantly on the hunt for the next big scoop. Taking a brief detour, you find yourself in Thailand where Eddie, an old pirate friend, presents a proposition: Find and return his back pack that he lost investigating a crash in the ocean in return it. Donning your wetsuit for the first time in a long time, you set off into the big blue and search low and lower for the object that will net you some priceless information.

Anticipating your curiosity and ardour for the truth, your dear friend Eddie continues to seek your assistance, citing the discovery of ruins resting on the ocean floor. Naturally you accept and your adventure continues around the world. But as you seek award winning articles, the truth behind your father’s last pieces of work remain ever distant. Perhaps this global trek will reveal the secrets you truly wish to discover.

Scuba-Diver-Adventures-Beyond-The-Depths-Screenshot-02

Gameplay
True to its intention to throw you into the life of a (reluctant) scuba diver, the game is played entirely from a first person perspective. To give you a little direction in the immensity that is the ocean, each locale is divided into missions and each mission contains objectives. Complete these to proceed. Classic game scenario. The game is based around three different modes: Exploration, Photography and Fish Feeding. All the major components of diving. By pressing the switch button, you are easily able to shift modes and complete each underwater task. Exploration mode allows you to search the ocean for lost treasures, even providing you with a hand radar system to make things a little easier. Photography is pretty self explanatory, though you will only be able to take a small amount of shots, so make them good ones. The percentage bar should help on that one, 100% means perfect. Again, a pretty self explanatory venture. Do I really even need to explain Fish Feeding? In this mode, you feed fish. Also you can take pictures of them. Simplicity aside, each task will net you experience, which will in turn allow you to level up and buy better equipment. So give everything a go, you just might like it.

Scuba-Diver-Adventures-Beyond-The-Depths-Screenshot-03

Progressing through the game will also net you a few minigames to complete. Whilst controlled similar to the main game, there are a few differences imposed to keep things interesting. In one particular game, you are unable to move, instead you must turn on the spot and search the immediate vicinity for hidden treasures. You are also given access to new elements that exist to assist you, such as an item that stops the clock. There’s even one that immediately uncovers five treasures for you. Helpful.

The main difficulty in the game arises from the time limit imposed on you as each mission begins. Being underwater you must rely on an Oxygen tank and when it runs out, the mission is over. So don’t dawdle, lest you be forced to complete the same objective over and over and over again. Should you really not wish to replay a mission, you can purchase an emergency air tank that will allow you to continue. This, however, will cost you diamonds, the game’s secondary currency. And wouldn’t you know it, it’s the currency you can purchase with real world money.

Being a free iOS game, Scuba Diver Adventures features all the classic handicaps that come with such a position. The diamond currency exists as a shortcut to higher ranked items, at the cost of genuine money. Though in all honesty it’s not that big of a deal. The option is there should you want to use it, so feel free. The main issue I found with the game’s currency system instead lies in gold. Found within the game itself, you can easily bolster your riches and spend it on upgrades to enhance your dive time, camera, swim speed, you name it you can buy it. However, the game will occasionally provide you with an annoying ultimatum regarding your air supply. In the case that you have used up your collection of tanks, you will be forced to either pay for a new one or wait a designated amount of time. I understand that this mechanic is prevalent across the mobile gaming world, but I’ll never understand why a game would willingly force you to wait until you can play again. It just doesn’t make sense.

Scuba-Diver-Adventures-Beyond-The-Depths-Screenshot-04

Visuals and Audio
One of the major selling points of the game. That’s not just a personal opinion, with the file clocking in at over 1GB, a great deal of effort was put into making the game look good. Which it does. Though the graphics themselves are not revolutionary, they definitely stand out from what you’d expect an iOS game to look like. The 3D models all hold up fairly well, though their movements possess a sense of rigidity at times that does remove some of the majesty the game was clearly going for. That being said, there’s actually a pretty decent range of fish types presented within the ocean. It might not sound like a big deal, but when fish are the only thing swimming between you and a blue abyss, you’re going to notice the types.

In line with the more advanced graphics, the game is also fully voiced. Now, this is probably one of the most important features that the game possesses. Honestly, if dialogue was presented through text, playthrough would have been exponentially more tedious. I’m not trying to attack the gameplay, but without the voices breaking up the mission progression, taking a photo of fish for the umpteenth time would have gotten on my nerves even more. That being said, the voice cast didn’t exactly provide a stellar performance. The staggered delivery of lines and slightly off inflections made it quite clear that the cast was speaking directly from paper. Props for efforts though. If that’s really the type of thing that bothers you, simply turn down the voices and enjoy the lilting piano that comprises the soundtrack and drift off into your own world.

Scuba-Diver-Adventures-Beyond-The-Depths-Screenshot-05

Overall
Scuba Diver Adventures: Beyond the Depths is an interesting concept. In my long list of game scenarios, scuba diving was not anywhere near the top…or on the list at all. Regardless, the game provides a fun little expedition beneath the waves that will provide you with a decent level of entertainment. That is until you run out of oxygen and have to wait a few minutes to play again. Seriously, the most annoying feature of the game. So suit up, grab your camera and fish food and take a trip into the 70% of the world that’s significantly wetter than the other 30. Just watch out for sharks. They’re those things that look like angry dolphins.

FROM ETOO TO RADIUS FESTIVAL – A CELEBRATION OF GAMES

FROM ETOO TO RADIUS FESTIVAL – A CELEBRATION OF GAMES

London’s EToo gaming event becomes the Radius Festival; Games Exhibition next to London’s Leicester Square; Nightly live-streaming show with developers, special guests and more!

London 5 June 2013: If you love games then you’ll love the Radius Festival, successor to last year’s hugely successful ‘EToo’ event, founded by The Guardian’s games editor Keith Stuart, game designer and producer Georg Backer, and Loading Bar Manager Jimmy Dance. The ambition was to create an event where people could discover and explore new and interesting games – and over the course of four days, it attracted over a thousand visitors.

This year EToo has evolved into the more ambitious Radius Festival, which will include several separate events.

The festival kicks off this Monday, June 9th, with “Radius Loading”, a big E3 media briefings party at the new Loading Bar location in Dalston, London, where popular gaming podcast Midnight Resistance and friends will collectively analyse the major press conferences.

Then, between June 19th – 21st, the “Radius Exhibition” will showcase a range of fascinating, exciting and intriguing games, from both well-known studios and new talent. The venue is one of London’s premiere locations, the White Space, seconds away from Leicester Square, right in the heart of London.

“Radius Exhibition is not just for developers; it is for everyone who loves to explore, discover and engage with games and their creators”, game developer and Radius organiser Georg Backer says, “which is why we’re curating the exhibition rather than asking developers to pay for exhibition space, and why the exhibition is free to attend.”

“There are amazing games out there, many unheard of, struggling to be discovered. We want to help them find an audience”, adds Andy Payne, chairman of UKIE, CEO of Mastertronic and co-organiser.

During the evenings, the venue will host the “Radius Show”, a live-streamed Internet show broadcast on Twitch featuring developer interviews, guest stars and many surprises. As with last year’s show there will be amazing games, interesting conversation, fascinating insights, breaking news and controversy.

“Last year we had everyone from comedian and actor Rufus Hound to video game poets and a music group that uses modified Guitar Hero controllers,” says co-founder of Etoo and Radius, Keith Stuart. “We’ll also have some great guest presenters, and I’ll be wearing a new jumper.”

The full line-up for the “Radius Exhibition” and “Radius Show” will be announced very soon, along with a few surprises.

The Radius Festival is a not-for-profit event supported by sponsors that include Sega, Mastertronic and game designer Mike Bithell, who says “Grass roots events like Radius are the unsung heroes of game devs, bringing exposure to the projects and people that define our medium’s future. I’m excited to do my bit to help the folk at Radius empower new people. Also I’ve been assured that there will be a Volume poster in the bathroom of the event.”

Keith Stuart adds “Radius continues what Etoo started, but one thing won’t change: Radius will maintain the intimate and friendly atmosphere for developers, gamers and everyone who is enthusiastic about technology, creativity and gaming.”

“You don’t need balls to be ballsy.” Acclaimed Scottish author Christopher Brookmyre introduces new character for forthcoming FPS

“You don’t need balls to be ballsy.” Acclaimed Scottish author Christopher Brookmyre introduces new character for forthcoming FPS

“The average FPS protagonist is a testosterone-addled sociopath with all the endearing charm of a cornered honey badger”

London, Thursday June 5th 2014: UK developer RedBedlam has taken a step towards redressing the longstanding gender imbalance in the FPS genre by announcing that the lead role in its innovative, generation-hopping shooter Bedlam will be a new character created specifically for the game.

Players will take on the role of Heather Quinn (aka Athena), a programmer at medical scanning developer Neurosphere who finds herself transported into the world of Starfire: a nineties FPS she remembers from her teen years. Searching for an explanation and a way home, she ventures beyond Starfire to discover a vast realm of interconnected game worlds documenting the evolution of the FPS genre and of video games in general.

Bedlam is adapted from the novel by Christopher Brookmyre, but diverges from the original in this change of protagonist. The novel’s hero, Ross Baker, does feature prominently in the game, but the switch to a female lead – who is a gamer and sci-fi fan – offered a fresh and bitingly humorous new perspective upon the “gameverse” that the player will explore.

“Choosing a strong, independent and modern female lead for this role not only means that we can help to address the woeful diversity situation amongst video game protagonists,” said Nick Witcher, Marketing Director at RedBedlam, “but it also allows us to make the most of Christopher Brookmyre’s writing by drawing upon his acclaimed reputation for creating compelling female characters.”

“The average FPS protagonist is a testosterone-addled sociopath with all the endearing charm of a cornered honey badger,” said Christopher Brookmyre. “I thought we could prove that you don’t need balls to be ballsy. Players of both sexes will identify with Athena, because first and foremost she is a gamer herself. Women have been shamefully ignored by the FPS genre, so it seemed appropriate that we have an acerbic female perspective in a game that plays upon the evolution and conventions of the genre.”

Developed in association with Standfast Interactive, the decades-spanning FPS takes players into a unique world of action and intrigue, visiting a range of genres old and new, from arcade platformer classics to modern RTS and shooter environments, all from a first person perspective and with a smattering of Brookmyre’s trademark dark humour.

For the latest screenshots and concept art for Bedlam please check out the gallery on the game’s website – http://www.bedlamthegame.com/gallery/

The game is set to appear on Steam in the summer of 2014 and with another two novel / video game tie-ins planned, the partnership between RedBedlam and Brookmyre looks set to take the gaming world by storm, with a new direction in plot-driven game design.

Here Be Monsters Launches Worldwide for iPad

Here-Be-Monsters-Screenshot-01
There be adventure too

After a successful beta period in the UK and Canada, Gamesys has launched their new MMO Here Be Monsters for the iPad. Combining fantasy with reality, players travel the globe as they search for over 100 mythical monsters, whom they must trap.

Beginning in London, players are quickly caught up in a diabolical plot that forces them into situations far beyond their station as new recruits in the Ministry of Monsters. Utilising hundreds of painstakingly researched and illustrated resources from numerous countries, players will be able to improve their traps and choose their baits  in order to better their chances at capturing  the monster that inhabit the regions of the world. New quests are developed episodically and released monthly, so players will have a constant stream of tasks to perform. The first season of the game will centre around London and Europe in general, transferring to Nanjing when season two rolls around. There is also promise of at least four more seasons slated for release, each focusing on other continents, so keep your travel bags packed.

When not jetsetting around a monster filled planet, players may decide to kick back and relax at their Homestead. This base of operations may be placed anywhere in the world and allows access to resource farming and the option to optimise crafting production lines. It’s also a neat place to showcase souvenirs.

Here-Be-Monsters-Screenshot-02
And then some…

If the game itself wasn’t enough to get you interested in buying the game itself, it would seem that being a member of the Here Be Monsters community can have some…less than expected bonuses. Players Lisa and Chris apparently met via a fan run guild (“The Mudskippers” for all those looking for love) and recently celebrated their wedding, featuring a Here Be Monsters themed cake. Isn’t that sweet?

The couple said:

“We both play Here Be Monsters and became friends last summer though we lived several hundred miles apart. We will always be grateful to the makers of Here Be Monsters for creating the virtual world in which we met.”

Michael Heywood (Executive Producer of Here Be Monsters) happily added:

“Everybody on the Here Be Monsters team sends a huge congratulations to Lisa and Chris on their wedding! Seeing players form real communities and relationships in the game makes us all very proud, and we’re very glad to have played a small part in their happiness.”

Well there you have it folks, an MMO that combines fiction and reality that actually combined fiction and reality. Crazy stuff. Anyway, Here Be Monsters is out now on the App Store for the low, low price of Free. So check it out and enjoy the monster trapping adventure. Who knows, you might even meet someone special.
