monster-musume-pal-screenshot- (6)

While gamers in North America have been able to enjoy Monster Monpiece, gamers in Europe have been waiting patiently for the title to come to the PSN store and today that has happened. Monster Monpiece is now available for download on the Vita in Europe and the game’s DLC will be released next week on June 11th for that region.

To go along with the game’s release in Europe a new set of English screenshots for Monster Monpiece have been released and as you can see, you can even get a Neptune card that can be leveled into Purple Heart. Be careful though, rubbing her again will simply revert her back to Neptune. You can check out our full review for Monster Monpiece here.

Overview
There are games released in Japan that will have people joking about how it will never be released in the West and then there are games like Monster Monpiece, a title that became famous for having people stroking their PS Vitas rapidly and making use of the touch screen and pad in ways that people expected but hadn’t seen yet. Despite the odds, Monster Monpiece is now available in English with most of its fan-service elements intact. The question is, is there a worthy game beneath all of the monster girls and bouncing breasts?

Story
In the world of Yafaniel, God created humans but when humanity became too big for its own good, this same God created monsters to reign in the humans. However when the monsters began running unchecked God struck down the monsters, forcing them into the bodies of humans, thus creating Monster Girls. Now humanity lives alongside Monster Girls, sharing a mutually beneficial relationship.

Monster Girls reside in cards to avoid running out of magical power which is replenished by Magus Quartz crystals in each major city. In one such city a young student named May is training to become an elite master of monster girls alongside her best friends Elza and Karen. May isn’t the strongest in her class and can be hesitant at times, which is why when the opportunity for an intercity duel arises, her teacher pairs her up with the monster girl Fia who is eager to charge ahead and serves as a good balance for May.

monster-musume-pal-screenshot- (22)

However before they are able to enter this tournament, May, Elza, and Karen run into a strange masked woman who transforms Elza into a “Lost.” By becoming Lost, Elza is now attacking every city and trying to steal their Magus Quartz and only May and Karen can try to stop her by getting to these cities first and gathering the crystals for safe-keeping. All in all, the story of Monster Monpiece is fairly simple at its core but one that is enjoyable thanks to a likable cast of characters, especially May and Fia, and how the light story stays serious when it needs to be while also providing humor and great character interaction in equal amount.

Gameplay
When players aren’t watching visual novel style dialogue sections or picking a travel point on the world map, they will be battling using the game’s card combat system. Before we go further let me say that while Monster Monpiece could have sold itself to many just on the concept alone, it has managed to bring with it an enjoyable card battling system.

Players are given the option of using any forty cards they wish, with these cards found either exploring the map, receiving card packs from defeated opponents, or purchasing them through the store. Building a deck is a fun endeavor as players have numerous factors to consider thanks to a few gameplay mechanics that players will need to master to conquer some of the more difficult AI opponents and stand a chance online.

monster-monpiece-english-screen- (9)

You see, the card battles are held on a 3 x 7 grid with each opponent having a 3 x 3 zone of their own where they can place a card and a 3 x 1 neutral zone in-between the two. Each turn a player will recover a certain amount of mana, which is used to summon Monster Girl cards into battle. Once these cards are placed they will transform into a chibified version of their card type and begin to advance forward whenever the player ends their turn.

When moving forward these cards will attack anything in their way with the true goal being to attack the opponent’s castle to win the match. Now while this may sound simple, and it is at its core, things can get rather complicated but in a good way considering there are a number of tutorials explaining things. You see, each card not only has a certain color border, which is called an Aura, but they also have various species such as Fairy, Demi-H, Dragon, Beast, Bird, and more, as well as card types such as melee, ranged bow attackers, healers, and buffers.

monster-monpiece-english-screen- (18)

There are numerous cards to choose from in the game and each one has their own unique strengths and playing smart will deliver the player power ups. You see, playing three blue aura cards in a row will not only provide the player with extra mana, but also give each of their cards on the field a boost in health and attack power. Along those lines, if the player has a beast type card on the field, they can also take a beast card from their hand and perform a fusion with the card on the field. This can be done anywhere, even in the enemy’s territory, and adds that card’s health, attack, Int/MP, and any abilities that card might have.

This can create some rather powerful combinations at times, as having a fused dragon melee type that is being backed up by a fused ranged beast that is being buffed by a fused undead can make for some outrageous attack output if you can put it together properly. There is a layer of complexity here that many fans of the TCG genre will get a big kick out of and it also helps that the AI can put up a fight. The difficulty varies between opponents and some boss battles may be easier than standard fights depending on how they are handled and what cards come into play. Then again, sometimes the AI spends too long trying to build up mana rather than stop your advancing forces which can be a rather dumb move at times.

monster-monpiece-english-screen- (11)

I can also say that the online component to the game works quite well. Monster Monpiece can be played locally through ad-hoc or in online rooms where players can test their decks against other players’ cards. These battles are held to timers between turns so no one can drag it out for too long and each of the matches I played were handled without any lag, though opponents really like to forfeit if they find themselves being overrun early. Players can even earn special rings that, when all are collected, can be used to unlock a special item for the main game.

Now, there is one aspect of the game that Monster Monpiece became infamous for when it was revealed in Japan and that is the leveling system, or as the game calls it the “First Crush Rub.” By defeating opponents you gain rub points which can then be used to level up cards which literally involves rubbing the Vita. In these moments players will need to hold their Vita vertically and also shown a zoomed in version of the chosen monster girl, and while moving the camera with the right analog stick they will need to rub, poke, and pinch the screen in various spots along the girls’ body to raise a meter that will level that card up.

monster-musume-pal-screenshot- (25)

When said card levels up, there are usually benefits in the form of more attack or less mana to summon, but stats can also drop so you may want to hedge your bets at times when it comes to leveling up your favorite cards, even if doing so means that the girl on said card will be losing some of her clothes in the process.

Visuals & Audio
Before we get to the fun part, the chibi models of the Monster Girls are simplistic looking on the battlefield with some variation between types, though more variation would have been nice and the game’s visual novel aspect is presented with some great looking character portraits and there are even a few CGs that can be found if the player looks around for them.

Now on to the fun part… or controversial part I suppose but for me it is the former. Monster Monpiece oozes with fan-service. Every character in the game is a woman and every card is a Monster Girl of some sort. The game features over a hundred cards and there are a large number of artists that have contributed artwork to the game, making some cards look a lot better than others, and each of these cards can be stripped down as they level up.

Monster-Monpiece-eng-screenshot- (5)

Some of the cards only lose one layer of clothing due to censorship, which can be an issue but is largely forgettable thanks to the sheer number of cards available for use. The cards generally start out fully equipped and as the player levels them up, they can go all the way down to their underwear and while there is no nudity in Monster Monpiece there are plenty of suggestive looking poses for those who are looking for that.

It is worth noting that this is Idea Factory International’s first time localizing a title and there are a few issues in the game’s translation. A few wording issues appear here and there and while this isn’t much of a problem since the game is voiced entirely by a superb Japanese voice cast, these translation problems do stand out a bit.

monster-monpiece-english-screen- (19)

As mentioned the game sports a full Japanese voice cast for the main characters while there are various voice types used for cards and these voice types determine how a card will sound in the First Crush Rub system. The background music in the battles changes depending on your area and they range from forgettable noise to songs with vocals that really stand out.

Overall
Monster Monpiece could have tried to go for a shallow experience where players spent their time gathering cards and stripping them down with the rubbing system, but it went beyond that by actually delivering an enjoyable card game with plenty of depth and customization to allow the player to create a deck to fight against others. While I didn’t have any problem with it, some may find the lewd nature of the game’s rubbing system and pictures a turn off and the censorship is noticeable for some cards, but for those who enjoy themselves some fan-service Monster Monpiece delivers not only that but a fun card game as well.

wii-sports-club-logo

Wii Sports Club will be complete come June 28, as Baseball and Boxing will be added to the slate via the Nintendo eShop for Wii U. A full, packaged retail edition will also go on sale July 12 for an SRP of AUD$54.95.

In Baseball, the Wii Remote Plus controller enables great control and precision for novice and expert hitters alike, while pitchers use the Gamepad to enter first-person view before selecting a pitch and aiming their throw. Catching in the field requires players keep the ball in their sights and centred in the GamePad view. In Boxing, not one but two Wii Remote Plus controllers can be utilised in each hand to allow for more precise offensive and defensive manoeuvres. Before you enter the ring and represent your regional club online however, you’d do well to hone your skills by taking on Skill Shaper challenges, from Speed Bag to Pro Puncher.

Galore Review

Galore-BoxArt

Galore
Studio: Entertainment One, Hopscotch Films
Publisher: Film Camp
Format: Cinema (Reviewed at Sony Theatrette)
Release Date: June 19th – Buy Tickets Here

Overview

Teenagers live life in abundance – wavering on the brink of the present as if it were their last day. Premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival this year, Galore, scratches the surface of being young and the infinite possibilities of adventure, passion and true love tainted by curiosity, secrets, regret, and chaos. Well-known for his directing and screenwriting of short films and documentaries, including; ‘Words from the City’, Rhys Graham presents his debut feature Galore. Rhys poignantly explores the harsh reality for youth in the isolated outskirts of Canberra, by incorporating his own experience into the film.

Story

The Australian drama begins in the outback, with two lovers hunting one another in the backseat of a station wagon. To clarify, they are young teenagers embracing the pleasures of sex in shameful secrecy. The shame is questionable. As it turns out, Billie (Ashleigh Cummings, star in ‘Puberty Blues’) is having a raunchy affair with her best friend’s boyfriend, Danny (Toby Wallace from ‘Lucky Country’).

Galore-Screenshot-1.0

Galore is a coming-of-age story for teenagers and the dangers of being self-absorbed in a phase of corruption. The primary focus of the film is on the complicated friendship between Billie and Laura (Lily Sullivan from ‘Mental’). At the age of seventeen and nearing the end of highschool, the life-long best friends have moved on from childhood and are now transforming into young women. In the midst of the summer holidays, Laura confides in Billie that she wants to have sex with Danny for the first time. Yet, the audience knows that Billie is ‘crazy-in-love’ with Laura’s skater boyfriend and only seems to care about how this decision will impact the outcome of her affairs with Danny-boy.

The tangle of lies is the backbone for the narrative, provoking the audience to pity Laura for her oblivion and curse Billie for her indiscretion. However, Laura’s interest in her relationship changes when she meets Isaac (Aliki Matangi). The newcomer is a struggling teenager who is taken in by social worker and mother of Billie, Carrie (Maya Stange from ‘Garage Days’) to stay in their backyard caravan. The gentle-hearted young man shares the same passion as Laura for reading, encouraging her to follow her dreams of writing. It is interesting how the close bond that forms between the two is more convincing than the “love” triangle amongst Danny, Billie and Laura.

Galore-Screenshot-02

A minor incident on the day of Billie’s birthday triggers a chain reaction that significantly impacts on the protagonist. After a work shift at Kingsley’s Chickens, Laura and Billie ride their bicycle to the skate park to find Danny for the evening celebrations at Billie’s place. However, the skater is at the hands of a few disgruntled teenagers in the mood for a fight. The girls intervene and rescue Danny, although the birthday dinner plans fall through, when Laura leaves with her boyfriend instead of accompanying Billie. The seemingly random attack triggers the downfall of Billie, who realises that she can no longer hide her feelings for Danny.

Unable to face the messiness of her own deceit, Billie lashes out one night at a party and steals a car, only to then crash it and endanger the lives of her close friends, Danny, Laura and Isaac. While miraculously no one is injured (or so it may appear), the incident leads to irreparable damage and sets in motion the unravelling truth. If Billie had taken responsibility for her actions sooner and listened to her mother’s advice, “We’re more than just the love we get from people”, the aftermath would not have been so tragic.

Galore-Screenshot-03

On the outer-layers of Galore are the impending bushfires, sweeping in Canberra to destroy the homes, communities and memories of its inhabitants. From the start of the film, the audience are forewarned by the voiceover of Billie about the fires, yet the real threat is the burning chaos that arises from the mistakes of one teenager and their influence on their friends. The final moments of the film reinforce the harsh reality of teenage life; growing up means letting go of what we know and starting a new page.

Visuals & Audio

Awarded for the Australian Cinematographer’s Society Gold Award for Galore, Stefan Duscio perfectly captures the bushy, dry and barren outskirts of Australia’s capital city. The scorching heatwave and rising smoke from the bushfires create an impenetrable rippling effect, looming in the backdrop of each scene in the screenplay. What makes the atmosphere so powerful is the truth behind the devastating bushfires of 2003. The film crew shot Galore in the local areas of Canberra, including; Tuggeranong, Kambah and Woden, that were ruined by these bushfires a decade ago.

Christopher O’Young and Flynn Wheeler reunite to compose the score for Galore, after working together on Rhys Graham’s short film, ‘The Turning: Small Mercies’. The duo delivers a tranquil soundtrack comprised mainly of cello and guitar, which is true to the heart and soul of young people. With the addition of roaring crickets and the haze of summer in the Australian bush, the atmosphere will acclimatise to Aussie audience members.

Galore-Screenshot-04

Overall

Galore reinforces the overwhelming nature of adolescence and the confronting emotions that stem from a change in hormones for both males and females. The age we discover sex, lust, love and the feeling of being untouchable, is a point in time that teenagers lose themselves and their sense of direction. The film, Galore is defined by the stunning performances of Ashleigh Cummings, Lily Sullivan, Toby Wallace and newcomer, Aliki Matangi. However, the story overcomplicates the message for youth, as Billie’s recklessness is at the fault of her own bad life choices. While love can be as immense as life is, teenagers should not derange themselves into believing that they can escape heartbreak, tragedy, agony and the perils of adulthood. Rhys Graham offers the audience a good portrayal of teenage life; a fragile flame that can produce wildfire and destroy everything in its path, or light ablaze in the darkness as a source of hope for a new beginning.

Wii SPORTS CLUB BASEBALL AND BOXING COMING TO NINTENDO eSHOP FOR Wii U ON 28th JUNE

Wii SPORTS CLUB BASEBALL AND BOXING COMING TO NINTENDO eSHOP FOR Wii U ON 28th JUNE

Packaged version of Wii Sports Club – complete with Baseball, Boxing, Tennis, Bowling and Golf – to release in stores on 12th July

5th June 2014 – Whether or not you are a veteran of the original Wii Sports series on Wii, step up to the batting plate or into the ring on 28th June when both Baseball and Boxing release on Nintendo eShop for Wii U, rounding off the Wii Sports Clubrange already comprising Tennis, Bowling and Golf. While for those who want to get their hands on the full roster of five sports on one disc, Wii Sports Club will be launching at retail as a packaged version on 12th July (SRP AU$54.95), completing the competitive return to action for the series with HD graphics, new and improved controls, as well as online play and community features supported by Miiverse.

Wii Sports Club kicked off in November 2013 with the Nintendo eShop releases of both Bowling and Tennis, followed by Golf the following month. With the introduction of an online multiplayer versus system, users with broadband Internet access can now compete in a regional club ranking system and represent their local area, with the added ability of Miiverse integration allowing handwritten messages to be posted during gameplay, whether to celebrate a victory or admit defeat!

In Baseball, the use of the Wii Remote Plus controller enables novice hitters and expert sluggers alike greater control and precision when going for that all-important home run. In the field, pitching is performed by holding the GamePad upright, with the action taking place in first-person view. Different types of pitch can be selected to attempt to bamboozle the batsman, but it’s down to you to adjust the power and aim of your throw. If the opponent does manage to return your pitch, try to keep the centre of the GamePad aimed at the ball, as a catching opportunity may even come your way…

With Boxing, bobbing and weaving your way to victory is now more fun and challenging than ever before, with players able to use one Wii Remote Plus controller in each hand to allow for more precise offensive and defensive manoeuvres. Before you enter the ring and represent your regional club online however, don’t forget to hone your technique by taking on Skill Shaper challenges such as Speed Bag, which requires players to keep an eye on an overhead display and pull off the right punches in the order instructed, or Pro Puncher, where players must use speed and accuracy to smash targets that appear in front of them.

To mark the launch of Baseball and Boxing on Nintendo eShop from 28th June, Wii U owners who download Wii Sports Club will get a 48-hour free trial enabling them to play the two sports, as well as Bowling, Tennis and Golf. The trial is open to everyone, even to people who sampled a free trial of Wii Sports Club before. Once the trial period ends, players can purchase a Day Pass on Nintendo eShop for AU$2.60 (NZ$3.40) to play all available sports for a 24-hour period, or can purchase permanent access to both Boxing and Baseball for AU$13.00 (NZ$17.00).

Two very different sports lie in store for fans on 28th June when both Baseball and Boxing release on Nintendo eShop for Wii U. For the full package of five sports on one disc, Baseball, Boxing, Tennis, Bowling and Golf, Wii Sports Club will also release at retail as a packaged game on 12th July.
