Deep Rock Galactic Released On Steam & Xbox One

Coffee Stain Publishing and Ghost Ship Games have just released their new space-faring adventure Deep Rock Galactic onto Steam Early Access and Xbox Game Preview.

Deep Rock Galactic puts you in the shoes of one of four classes of awesome and badass dwarven miners, who each have their own unique abilities and gear. Play as The Driller, The Engineer, The Scout, or The Gunner and work together to survive waves of blood thirsty aliens and escape the games procedurally generated cave systems with the plethora of loot you pick up on the way. Hop into the game to experience an expansive amount of missions on 7 unique regions of Planet Hoxxes, with a lot more content to come.

The main features of Deep Rock Galactic include:

  • 4-player co-op: Work as a team to explore, fight, dig, and plunder the impressive cave systems filled with hordes of enemies and shiny loot
  • 4 unique classes: Defend your friends by mowing down enemies as The Gunner, light up tunnels and scout out enemies and loot as The Scout, destroy the terrain to make your own paths as The Driller, or support your friends and destroy the aliens by creating defensive turrets and structures as The Engineer
  • Fully destructible environments: Complete your missions by following the caves, or just break through them and make your own path. Be warned though, you do not want to hit an alien swarm unprepared
  • Procedurally generated cave network: Adventure through unique cave systems full of spooky aliens and awesome loot.
  • Light your path: Make sure you pack enough light to illuminate the pitch black caves. Monsters like to hide in the dark.

Ever since the closed alpha that was placed on Steam back in December 2016, over ten thousand test sub- uhh, capable dwarves have been playing an ever-improving game and delivering their feedback to the team. Due to their cries of fear, I mean excitement, the team has so far added upgrades, drones, vanity items, a mini-boss, biomes, and have kept the hilarity of the broken barrel physics intact!

Deep Rock Galactic is a gleefully chaotic mix of shooting, mining, fully destructible caves and some super irresponsible corporate management,” says Søren Lundgaard, CEO/Co-Founder of Ghost Ship Games. “We’re absolutely thrilled to be launching onto Xbox and PC, and we have big plans for the continued development of Deep Rock Galactic – new enemies, new biomes, new upgrades, even new playable classes!”

Deep Rock Galactic is one of the first titles we’re launching as Coffee Stain Publishing and we couldn’t be happier to work with Ghost Ship Games,” says Anton Westbergh, CEO/Co-Founder of Coffee Stain. “Since the game was revealed at Microsoft’s E3 showcase last year, the response has been overwhelmingly positive and we’re thrilled that Ghost Ship Games chose us to join them on this wild journey.”

Deep Rock Galactic is available now on Steam Early Access for $24.99/€22.99/£18.99 and on Xbox Game Preview for $24.99/€22.99/£19.24.

You can also grab the gut punching soundtrack with 22 full tracks via Steam for $7.99/€7.99/£5.79.

Where the Water Tastes Like Wine Review

Where the Water Tastes Like Wine

Developer: Dim Bulb Games, Serenity Forge
Publisher: Good Shepherd Entertainment
FormatPC (Reviewed)
Release Date: 28 Feb 2018
Price: $19.99USD – Available Here

Overview

My first encounter with Where the Water Tastes Like Wine was stumbling on a piece of news saying how Sting is lending his voice there to a humanoid wolf. Celebrities lending their vocal cords (how’s that for a mental image?) isn’t anything new, although I find Sting’s soothing yet intimidating voice perfect for this. Exactly how I’d imagine a talking wolf. After more research, the descriptions of the game in various articles and press releases still didn’t tell me much. You travel all over the USA, listen & tell stories to others but what’s the catch? Well, this is where I come in. After playing a lot of it this week, I can tell you that I fell in love with the game and its atmosphere. So grab a cup of something warm, sit down and let me tell you why this game is something definitely worthy of your attention (and the purchase).

Story

The story finds you, a weary traveler, in a lantern-lit room playing cards with other gamblers. Eventually, as the stakes get higher, the playing party dwindles down to you and the said wolf. You shamefully lose and instead of taking your soul or your clothes (this option would just derail the game into a Japanese visual novel), the menacing wolf condemns you to travel all over the USA. In these travels, you’ll meet folks from all backgrounds, hear their stories, share the stories you picked up along the way and tell them all to the wolf in order to repay your debt. A rather unusual and overly complicated way to repay a debt. The game is bound to have a weird plot for to go in line with an already unusual gameplay, as we will find out next.

Gameplay

Where the Water Tastes Like Wine combines 2D visuals with a 3D overworld USA map. You walk across the 3D map of USA (think of those CIV V tiles but with cities and camps you can enter), meet a lot of hobos, orphans, and poor families. The game is set during the Great Depression so you won’t find many of the wealthy people on your travels. You find new stories on the outskirts of the big cities, in state capitals (where you can also find work to earn some extra dosh) and in bonfire camps. These bonfires are where you’ll meet one of the 16 unique characters throughout the game and listen to their tales. They will also ask for a story in a return, either something funny or sad or exciting. This is where all those stories you picked up before play their parts. By paying attention to what they’re interested in and telling the right stuff, they’ll open up a bit more about their lives before leaving elsewhere. If you did everything right, you’ll be shown the next state you can find them and eventually hear the rest of their stories.

Visuals

Now, this whole aspect of the game is a hit and a miss. The story vignettes and their art is nothing short of amazing. Beautifully drawn, lots of details and perfectly compliments the industrial and poverty-ridden USA. The 3D part of the game is another thing. Most of the time, it looks like above average Unity store asset. A 3D map that is visually similar to 2D vignettes would do wonders. This way, it just creates a glaring disconnection and makes for an abrupt transition between these two styles. For what it’s worth, the day/night cycle and living scenery as you move across the map are done rather well.

Audio

Not to say that Sting is the only strong name in the cast, the rest of the cast for Where the Water Tastes Like Wine is pretty impressive. This includes  Melissa Hutchison (Clementine in The Walking Dead games), Dave Fennoy (Lee Everett in The Walking Dead games), Kimberly Brooks (Ashley Williams in Mass Effect), Cissy Jones (Delilah in Firewatch, and Joyce in Life is Strange), and Elizabeth Maxwell (RWBY). What does all of that amount to? The most memorable voice acting I’ve experienced in games lately. Every character you meet on your travels has that extra something in their tone. For some, you can almost feel how their spirit is broken as they talk. In any case, the voices in the game perfectly compliment the visuals of the character drawings. It’s not a small feat when you see a character, hear them talk and immediately think “yep, that’s exactly the voice that goes with that face”.

Overall

Where the Water Tastes Like Wine is an interesting experiment, to say the least. Most importantly, it is an experiment that ended up working just right. While I didn’t like the uninspiring direction in the 3D section of the game, the atmosphere, the voice acting and vivid characters from the struggling period of USA make up for everything. As far as I’m concerned, Where the Water Tastes Like Wine turned out to be one of the most pleasant indie surprises in 2018.

Ion Maiden Shows Old-School Shooters How It’s Done in Q3 2018

Ion Maiden Shows Old-School Shooters How It’s Done in Q3 2018

Exclusive Preview Campaign Available Now For Players Who Purchase Early Access

DALLAS, TX – 28 Feb. 2018 – Ion Maiden, the old-school first-person shooter from 3D Realms and Voidpoint, will release for Windows PC, Mac, and Linux in Q3 2018. The game is available in Steam Early Access today! Players will receive a complete and polished exclusive multi-hour preview campaign.

Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison earned her nickname as a bomb disposal expert for the Global Defense Force. When transhumanist cult mastermind Dr. Jadus Heskel unleashes a cybernetic army on Neo DC, Shelly decides it’s time to start chucking bombs rather than diffusing them.

Her journey will leave trails of blood and gore in huge, multi-path levels filled with those famous colorful keycards and plenty of secrets and Easter Eggs to discover behind every corner. There’s also no regenerating health here, so stop taking cover and start running and gunning. Honestly, Ion Maiden should probably come out on three hundred floppy disks.

Shelly’s quest to take down Dr. Heskel’s army will see her use an arsenal of weapons, all with alternate fire modes or different ammo types. Her signature revolver, Loverboy, brings enemies pain and players pleasure with single shots, or Shelly can fan the hammer Old West style. Shotguns are fun, but tossing grenades down their barrels and firing explosive rounds is even better. Bowling Bombs are just as violent and over-the-top as one would hope.

Ion Maiden laughs at the idea of constant checkpoints and straight paths through shooting galleries. But just because this is a true old-school first-person shooter doesn’t mean there won’t be all the good new stuff the last two decades have brought. Headshots? Hell yeah. More physics and interactivity? You betcha. Widescreen, controller support, and Auto Saves? 3D Realms and Voidpoint took the best of both worlds and cooked it all into a bloody stew.

3D Realms and Voidpoint are proud to bring back the Build engine, which powered Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, and Shadow Warrior, in all of its hand-crafted pixelated glory. They’ve spent a lot of time tinkering under the hood to take advantage of new technology and techniques. Bigger levels, hundreds of new colors, and morphing maps that transform mid-level are all just a few of the advancements made to the engine.

Ion Maiden is available on Steam Early Access now for $19.99. The game will fully launch in Q3 2018 in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Russian.

“Bringing back classic build-engine shooters has been our aim for years, so we’re diving right into a spiritual successor to the games which put 3D Realms on the map,” Frederik Schreiber, Vice President, 3D Realms. “The team assembled for this project knows exactly how to execute our vision, and we couldn’t be more excited to finally bring back a true 3D Realms shooter.”

For more information please explore 3D Realms’ and Voidpoint’s websites.

The Blackout Club Revealed: Co-Op Horror for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC in Q1 2019

The Blackout Club Revealed: Co-Op Horror for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC in Q1 2019

Next Project from Senior BioShock, Dishonored Devs

TIBURON, CA – 29 Feb. 2018 – Question™, a team of industry veterans including the Creative Director and Lead Writer of BioShock 2, the Senior Gameplay Programmer of Dishonored, and the Lead Effects Artist for BioShock Infinite, has unveiled its next title. The Blackout Club, a cooperative paranormal horror mystery, steps into the light in Q1 2019 across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Set in a small town with a monstrous secret, The Blackout Club follows a group of teens who band together after learning they’ve all been temporarily losing consciousness – waking up in strange places with no memory of what they have done. Recently, one of their closest friends vanished entirely. When none of their parents, teachers, or even the police are willing to believe them, the friends launch an investigation. Together they will discover a maze of tunnels – a hostile underworld filled with hypnotic music and populated by a clandestine group of adults – all beneath their seemingly idyllic suburbs.

To save their community and themselves, the teens will need to capture the conspiracy on camera and prove its existence to the world. Up to four players will sneak out of their homes and go on surveillance missions filled with procedurally-generated elements including variable objectives, enemy encounters, loot drops, and more. Every night will be a different adventure as the team seeks out additional clues and explores new parts of their neighborhood and its ominous underbelly. The club must trust no one as they get closer to finding out what happened to their missing friend — and the cause of their uncontrollable blackouts.

Surviving the dangers of night will require intelligence, improvisation, and skill. Sleepwalking adults that could be their neighbors or relatives now seek to drag them underground. Players must create and coordinate diversions and use other tactics to break the enemy’s vice-like grip. The last player left standing must avoid attracting the attention of an even more dangerous entity – one that pursues its prey relentlessly – one that can’t be seen with open eyes…

Player characters will be customizable with a variety of powers and equipment loadouts. Every member of the group will play a distinct role and utilize devices like drones or deployable traps to outwit their foes and gather evidence of their crimes. When the mission is complete, players will head back to the hideout, where they can level up and acquire new abilities for use on future outings.

“In The Blackout Club, the horror genre comes home,” said Jordan Thomas, Co-Founder, Question LLC. “Our story is about vulnerable heroes — for whom co-op gameplay is a matter of survival — who unite to save their friends. We love expressive systems, where you shape the game experience as you see fit, often versus a whole ecosystem of intelligent threats. And now, they’re right next door – in a familiar, modern town, where the monster wears a human face. We can’t wait for you to meet it.”

The Blackout Club releases in Q1 2019. Explore the official website, follow the game’s updates on Twitter or Instagram, and like the Facebook page for updates on The Blackout Club.

PETER MOLYNEUX’S THE TRAIL: FRONTIER CHALLENGE VENTURES ONTO THE NINTENDO SWITCH

PETER MOLYNEUX’S THE TRAIL: FRONTIER CHALLENGE VENTURES ONTO THE NINTENDO SWITCH

The Deeply Strategic and Innovative PC Game Launches Exclusively on the Switch

San Francisco (February 28th, 2018) – Kongregate, a leading publisher of mobile, PC, and web games, reteams with 22cans to launch The Trail: Frontier Challenge on the Nintendo Switch! Imagined by industry legend Peter Molyneux, creator of Black & White and the “God Game” genre, 22cans is bringing the popular PC game, with touch controls, to console for the first time.

The Trail: Frontier Challenge is an innovative and exploration-driven simulation game — taking players on a massive journey through the beautiful and expansive American wilderness. After choosing a character, players will throw on a backpack and embark on a stunning adventure through mountains and forests, collecting items to craft and trade with, while avoiding exhaustion from their travels. As they amass fortune and notoriety, they will work with others around the globe to build a thriving community and ultimately become the leader of the most successful town in the new American frontier.

“The Nintendo Switch is a fantastic platform and one that is perfectly suited for The Trail: Frontier Challenge,” said Peter Molyneux, Creative Director, 22cans. “Whether players are relaxing at home, or off on their own travels, there’s a completely immersive and beautiful experience to pick up and play.”

The Trail: Frontier Challenge includes more strategy and challenges than ever before. Weather affects player progress in challenging and sometimes unpredictable ways. Extreme cold requires additional food, while muddy terrain can slow progress, but players can craft improved clothing & gear to receive various buffs to help counteract these effects. After reaching Eden Falls, travelers will have the opportunity to build a home as one of 5 professions: Explorer, Hunter, Lumberjack, Cook, or Tailor. Each profession has its own skill tree to progress through and can only be truly mastered when every skill is unlocked. Touch controls in portable mode have been added exclusively for the Switch release.

“Developing for the Switch has been a new and exciting process for our team,” said Emily Greer, co-founder and CEO of Kongregate. “The Trail is a perfect debut Switch title for us; it’s family-friendly and easy to put down and pick back up again. We think Switch players will really enjoy being able to take their cinematic adventure with them anywhere they go.”

Players can embark on their epic journey along an unexplored frontier in The Trail: Frontier Challenge beginning today in Europe and starting March 8 in the Americas on the Nintendo Switch ($14.99), rated E for Everyone. You can find additional information about the game on the official Facebook and Twitter accounts.

The veteran Graffiti team has more than 50 years of experience successfully positioning and launching titles on various platforms and will use that experience to create efficient and effective programs for its partners. Graffiti Games partners can also expect a collaborative effort that ensures that both developers and Graffiti benefit from a game’s success.

“We’re extremely excited to partner with amazing studios like 13AM, Serenity Forge and Space Mace as part of our first-year lineup,” said Alex Josef, CEO of Graffiti Games. “They are making quality games that people will love to play for years to come, and we’re thrilled that we can help them launch their titles. Additionally, we’re looking to partner with more talented developers in the coming years to help bring their games to market and help them get the recognition they deserve.”

Graffiti’s 2018 lineup includes the following games:

  • The King’s Bird from Serenity Forge – The King’s Bird is a momentum-driven, precision-platforming game that has players seamlessly dash, glide, and flow through a mysterious world with precision and grace.
  • Joggernauts from Space Mace Games – Joggernauts is a co-op auto-runner party game where 2-4 players take turns switching to lead the team through deceptively difficult color-coded platforming levels.
