Bumblebee Confirmed for Transformers 4

transformers-4-screenshot-05

As we reported yesterday, principal photography is now underway for Michael Bay’s Transformers 4. During the week, Paramount titillated the fans by showing the vehicle-modes for Optimus Prime and two as of yet unannounced Autobots. Today, we are treated to another of these photos, this time we get to see the T4 interpretation of fan-favourite Autobot, Bumblebee.

Debuting as a 1977 Chevrolet Camaro in the beginning of the first film, Bumblebee quickly underwent a transformation to a 2006 Concept Camaro, which he kept for the remainder of the trilogy. For his latest iteration, Bumblebee will stick to being a Camaro but will be rocking it old-school and driving around as a customised 1967 model. In addition, it looks like his colour palette has been swapped to primarily black with yellow trim.

Only a few days into shooting and although we don’t know too much about the plot of the film, we already have four sexy new cars to look at and a lot to ponder over until the film’s release on June 26th, 2014. For all the news about the robots in disguise as it becomes available, be sure to like the official Transformers Facebook page here and don’t forget to stay tuned to Capsule Computers.

Interview with Gaijin Games’ Alex Neuse

gaijin-games-01

Gaijin Games are best known for their BIT.TRIP games, which have been around since BIT.TRIP Beat first came out back in 2009. They’ve released nearly a dozen games on virtually every platform from iOS to modern platforms to PC and beyond. Their newest game, BIT.TRIP Presents Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien, garnered critical acclaim not only from us here at Capsule Computers, but from critics across the world.

CC: How did you come up with the idea to make a rhythm-based runner game to begin with?

AN: In the original BIT.TRIP series, were were telling our story through arcade action and how it pairs with music. For the fourth game in the series, we knew that we wanted CommanderVideo running through the world, and because of the theme of the series, it had to be rhythm-based. The best way that we came up with to achieve this mashup was to make an auto-running platformer.

CC: Could we be seeing some DLC adventures for the Captain and friends?

AN: We definitely have some DLC up our sleeves, but aren’t ready to announce what it is just yet. Also, while we do have a character in Runner2 called CaptainVideo, the main protagonist of the BIT.TRIP series is CommanderVideo. The only reason we added CaptainVideo to Runner2 was as a joke, since people have a hard time keeping track of the “Commander” part of our main character’s name.

bit-trip-runner-2-screenshot-03

CC: What inspired the extra characters?

AN: A whole lot of being very silly in the office. It’s kinda how we make all our decisions at Gaijin.

CC: How did you come up with the idea for the retro levels?

AN: Well, the retro levels first made their appearance in BIT.TRIP RUNNER when we had a Pitfall-inspired bonus level theme. In Runner2, we wanted to keep the retro levels as bonuses, but didn’t want to go as far into the retro, so we settled on the Famicom-era theme instead. They help break up the action and give the player something new to look at and do

CC:  Did you have any ideas for other game modes?

AN: Sure. But at a certain point, you have to decide what makes it into a game and what gets cut. We felt that what we ended up with was just the right amount of variation of modes.

bit-trip-runner-2-screenshot-04

CC: Will the Captain get any more enemies or moves in the future?

AN: Actually, he’s a Commander, not a Captain. Check out the end of this public service announcement we did a few years ago. And we probably haven’t seen the end of CommanderVideo. We’re not sure about what kinds of enemies or moves we’ll see him do in the future, but whatever it is, it’ll be amazing!

CC:  Can we expect more cross-overs (like Meatboy) in the future?

AN: Maybe…

CC: If you were to implement voice acting for the characters, who would play each character?

AN:
CommanderVideo – Hugh Grant
CommandgirlVideo – Phyllis Diller
Unkle Dill – Rodney Dangerfield
Reverse Merman – Gilbert Godfried
Whetfahrt Cheesebörger – Marvin the Martian
Pitazo – Bobcat Goldthwait
CaptainVideo – Bruce Willis

bit-trip-runner-2-screenshot-01

CC: Is there anything you would do differently if you were given clearance to rebuild the game?

AN: We might cut a few levels here and there, since there are places in the game where it can get a bit samey. Also, we’d make it a little more clear how the Key Palaces work or just cut them from the game.

CC: What is your favorite thing about Runner2?  The series as a whole?

AN: I think my favorite thing is playing in Hard Mode and acing a level. When it all comes together, it feels so good. My favorite thing about the series as a whole is how we were able to tell a meaningful story in a very abstract way and still have people “get it”. We have had numerous people tell us about how they wept at the end of BIT.TRIP FLUX because the journey with CommanderVideo was over, and it ended so perfectly. That is my favorite thing. Knowing that we’ve managed to touch people.

CC: What can we look forward to in Runner3?

AN: Well, if we decide to make Runner3, which we currently have no plans to do, I’m sure you’ll be able to look forward to a level of wackiness that is so far unprecedented in video games.

bit-trip-runner-2-screenshot-02

CC: What gave you the idea for the cannon sequence for a perfect run?

AN: We wanted a tiny little microgame at the end which would be a way for people to enhance their scores and get even better than a perfect. Targets and bullseyes and human cannons are fun, so it really was a no-brainer.

CC: How did you slip the character design of the reverse merman past the ratings boards? 🙂

AN: We didn’t. We reported all content to the ratings boards as we are obliged to do, and they rated the game appropriately. In fact, the Australian rating board was a little late in getting the rating to us, which is part of the reason that the game was delayed in coming to Australia.

That concludes our interview with Alex of Gaijin Games. We very much appreciate the time he took to help us put this interview together! We especially appreciate their forgiveness and good humor for getting the Commander and Captain out of sorts. (Oops!).

Incredible Jack Review

Incredible Jack
Developer: Belmac Interactive
Publisher: Chillingo
Platforms: iOS (reviewed)
Release Date: May 30, 2013
Price: $0.99 – Available Here

Overview
What happens when you kidnap a family full of Timbergrotes, save for the patriarch? Well, I would probably take off, go into hiding, and get as many mindless lackeys as I could to help slow down the daddy Timbergrote while I made my getaway. In Incredible Jack, you’ll take on the roll of Jack, that lone Timbergrote, as he sets out to take back his family from the Demon Prince. How does Incredible Jack, the latest iOS platformer from Chillingo and Belmac Interactive hold up? Let’s find out.

incredible-jack-01

Story
Once upon a time there were the Timbergrotes. They were a hardworking group of treasure seeking coal miners, but they were known for being selfish. One day, Jack met a lady Timbergrote named Jeanine. They fell in love and had lots of children, and they taught the rest of the Timbergrote community that their selfishness wasn’t necessarily the best way to live.

The demons that were watching the Timbergrotes saw all of this and became angry. With the guidance of the Demon Prince, they kidnapped all of Jack’s family and ran off. Now Jack has to get his family back, taking down the Demon Prince and his minions in the process!

incredible-jack-02

Gameplay
From the ground up, Incredible Jack feels like he has his roots firmly planted in Mushroom Kingdom. Jack is your standard platforming protagonist. He collects coins, takes out the vilest of monsters by jumping on their head, and has to navigate some tricky terrain to rescue his family.

The controls for Incredible Jack follow the same trend of so many other recent iOS platformers and it’s much better for it. The only on-screen buttons you even have access to are the left and right directional buttons and a jump button. Using these, Jack can move, push or jump on boxes and barrels, double jump to reach higher platforms, and more. The controls are also quite responsive, providing a concise sense of control.

Taking out enemies is as simple as a plop or two on top of their dome space. Bosses take quite a few more bumps to their braincage, but they’re not generally very tough encounters, especially compared to some of the levels you’ll have to fight through to get to them.

incredible-jack-03

You can tell a lot of care went into the enemy and level design in the game. Well laid out levels often contain several hidden areas worth a few extra coins. Traps and jumping segments feel designed enough to give you a challenge without feeling overwhelming.

Incredible Jack implements a little bit of an RPG mechanic. This allows you to use coins you’ve collected throughout the levels to permanently upgrade health or lung capacity (for swimming) or to get one time use items like the coin-sucking magnet. It adds a few goals to work for, but it has a very sharp downside as well.

incredible-jack-05

The downside to the RPG mechanic is that it opens the door to a minefield of micro-transactions. This wouldn’t be an issue if the game were free to play, but you have to pay the $0.99 to get into the amusement park before so much more is tossed at you. A few of the items are helpful but not necessary, but some of the transactions feel like they were designed by the Demon Prince himself.

You can spend real money to buy in-game coins. This seems fairly harmless at first – you can use the coins to upgrade your health and such – but upon using up your third free continue, you quickly discover how the coins will work against you. When you die, you’re presented with the option to cash in 500 coins for a continue. If you don’t, you’ll have to start the entire level over again, and some of the levels can get pretty tough. All in all, it just feels like a cheap shot to the people who were already interested enough to drop $1 on the game.

incredible-jack-04

Visuals & Audio
Incredible Jack is a great looking game. The characters are all bright and vibrant. The world is also packed full of color. Character designs convey a fantastic sense of whimsy, like something from a Saturday morning cartoon. Each of the seven worlds (five to six levels each) feel distinctly different from setting right down to the enemies and bosses in each world. The game is also just downright cute. Watching Jack hug is son or daughter at the end of a level will just melt your heart.

For the most part, the audio design of the game is nothing remarkable. The short music clip played when you rescue your children, though, does a fantastic job to help enhance the “cute-ness” of the experience.

Overall
Overall, Incredible Jack is a solid, competent platformer for the iOS. The game boasts responsive controls, great, meaty level design, and some heart warming reunions. The game feels as though it suffers from freemium-itis, however. It’s hard to shake the feeling that some zones are artificially more difficult for the purpose of nickel-and-diming the folks who’ve already paid for your game in the first place. Regardless, if you want a meaty, fun platformer, Incredible Jack is definitely worth checking out. He may not be incredible, but he’s definitely fun.

Ace Attorney: Phoenix Wright Trilogy HD Released

"OBJECTION!"
“OBJECTION!”

Today is the day we’ve all been waiting for! The Ace Attorney: Phoenix Wright Trilogy HD for iOS devices has been released! It was originally delayed but too our surprise, about a week ago, we were told by Capcom that they would be releasing it today and here it is!

Here is a snippet from a previous article I did on this game just outlining how you go about getting the actual games and how the app works:

The HD Trilogy will include the original Ace Attorney, Justice For All and Trials and Tribulations. Once you’ve downloaded the free base app you can then choose to buy each title separately or all together. The prices are as follows:  The Original game will be $5.99 and both sequels will cost $6.99 which is actually an awesome price for these games. If you’re a true fan and want the whole Trilogy that’ll set you back $16.99 which is still a damn good price! The app will also include a quirky little extra called “Everybody Object” which allows you to email or tweet Wright’s catchphrases, with animation, to friends.

You can read the full article here.

Now that you know you can go and grab yourself the game from the iTunes store here. Happy lawyer-ing and my all your trials be speedy trials!
