senran-kagura-2-deep-crimson-opening-screengrab-01

We haven’t seen a ton of Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson’s gameplay since the game was announced but now we at least know what the game’s opening movie will look like. Famitsu has released the opening video for the 3DS title which is set to be released in Japan on August 7th and you can check it out below.

As we have previously written, this sequel will introduce co-op gameplay to the series as well as two new characters in the form of Kagura and Naraku and if you pay attention to the video, you will see both new characters appear a number of times throughout this opening movie steeped in crimson red.

Microsoft Bringing TV to Xbox with Xbox Originals

Xbox-One-Logo

When there was no Xbox Newsbeat this week, I started to get a bit shakey. What would we do without all the awesome Microsoft gaming news? Well it turns out that there is something even more exciting being announced that more than makes up for it; Xbox Originals! Back when the Xbox One was first announced, one of the selling points was that there would be new, original television programming that would be available on the console. Well now that time is here, as Microsoft are bringing Xbox Originals to both the Xbox One and Xbox 360.

After collaborating with some of Hollywood’s biggest movers and shakers, The guys over at Microsoft HQ have created some killer content that you will be able to watch through your console in the coming months. While the specifics of release dates and times is still somewhat ambiguous, here are the shows that you will be enjoying:

“Halo” television series

The “Halo” television series is a groundbreaking original series based on the award-winning “Halo” franchise. Award-winning filmmaker, director and producer Steven Spielberg will executive produce the live-action TV series, created in partnership with 343 Industries and Amblin Television.

 “Every Street United”

“Every Street United” is an unscripted series of eight, thirty-minute episodes and a one-hour finale, featuring legendary soccer players Thierry Henry and Edgar Davids, focused on the global search for soccer’s most gifted and undiscovered street stars scouted across eight countries (United States, England, Argentina, Spain, Brazil, the Netherlands, Ghana and South Korea). The series culminates this July in a 4v4 street game finale in the shadow of the World Cup in Rio de Janeiro.

Each episode will feature unique and incisive narratives about the grassroots street stars and the communities that shaped them. Industry veteran and eight-time Emmy-Award winning producer, director, writer and editor Jonathan Hock (“Streetball,” “30 for 30: The Best That Never Was”) is directing the series. Emmy-Award winning producer Mike Tollin and Mandalay Sports Media are executive producing. Professional soccer luminaries, Henry and Davids, will serve as coaches for the 4v4 street game in Rio. “Every Street United” will premiere in June 2014. All episodes will be available through Xbox Video for Xbox One, Xbox 360, Windows 8 (PC and Surface) and Windows Phone 8.

About to become a whole lot more useful

 Bonnaroo

Xbox owners around the globe can experience the magic of the 13th annual Bonnaroo music and arts festival with a live concert destination on Xbox Live Friday, June 13 through Sunday, June 15, 2014, brought to viewers in partnership with Superfly Presents. With the Bonnaroo app, fans can enjoy live music like never before, with a virtual experience featuring the best performances, multiple stages, biggest artists and amazing SuperJams, and explore this year’s lineup to see the best of Bonnaroo’s past with exclusive performances. Fans can also join the conversation with fellow virtual-Bonnaroovians and get connected to their friends and the festival. Xbox is the exclusive broadcasting partner for Bonnaroo and the only location to get all of the interactive features.

 “Signal to Noise”/“Atari: Game Over”

Xbox is creating a new six film documentary series, “Signal to Noise,” (working title) with two-time Academy Award winning producer Simon Chinn (“Searching for Sugar Man” and “Man on Wire”) and Emmy winning producer Jonathan Chinn (FX’s “30 Days” and PBS’s “American High”), through their multi-platform media company, Lightbox. The series will expose little known stories of how modern technology has radically altered the way we interact with our world.

The first installment, “Atari: Game Over” (working title), explores the fabled Atari mystery, dubbed “The Great Video Game Burial of 1983.” As the legend goes, the Atari Corporation, faced with overwhelmingly negative response to the E.T. video game, disposed of millions of unsold game cartridges by burying them in the small town of Alamogordo, New Mexico. Fuel Entertainment took an interest in the legend, and in December 2013, with help from local garbage contractor Joe Lewandowski, acquired the exclusive rights to excavate the Alamogordo landfill. Fuel Entertainment then brought the opportunity to Xbox Entertainment Studios. The team will head to the landfill in question to determine if the story is true, interviewing a cast of characters related to the game and its mystery along the way. “Atari: Game Over” is directed by writer/director Zak Penn (“X-Men 2,” “Avengers,” and “Incident at Loch Ness”). It will air exclusively on Xbox One and Xbox 360 in 2014.

 “Humans”

“Humans” is a bold new drama co-produced with UK broadcaster Channel 4. Award-winning UK production company Kudos (“The Hour,” “Utopia,” “Broadchurch”) will produce the hour-long, eight-episode series, which will share a premiere broadcast window on the Xbox platform and Channel 4 in the UK in 2015.

Executive produced by Jane Featherstone (“Life on Mars,” “Broadchurch”) and Derek Wax (“The Hour,” “Sex Traffic”), and written by British writing team Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley (“Spooks,” “Spooks: The Greater Good”), “Humans” is an English-language adaptation of Sveriges Television and Matador Film’s acclaimed Swedish series, “Real Humans.” “Humans” is set in a parallel present where the latest must-have gadget for any busy family is a ‘Synth’ – a highly-developed robotic servant eerily similar to its live counterpart. In the hope of transforming the way they live, one strained suburban family purchases a refurbished synth only to discover that sharing life with a machine has far-reaching and chilling consequences. Casting for “Humans” will begin in May 2014, and production will commence later this summer.

 “Halo” digital feature

343 Industries and Scott Free Productions are creating a “Halo” digital feature to be released later this year. The project will be executive produced by Ridley Scott and Scott Free TV President, David Zucker. Sergio Mimica-Gezzan (“Battlestar Galactica,” “Pillars of the Earth,” “Heroes”) will direct.

As if that wasn’t enough, We also have some goss on some other Xbox Original programming that is still in the works. Here are some of the shows you will be watching a little further down the track:

“Deadlands”

Xbox Entertainment Studios has committed to a script based on the successful pen-and-paper role playing game created by Shane Lacy Hensley. “Deadlands” is a genre-bending alternative history of the Weird West, filled with undead gunfighters, card-slinging sorcerers, mad scientists, secret societies, and fearsome abominations.

 “Extraordinary Believers”

Xbox Entertainment Studios is developing an innovative, hybrid stop-motion show dubbed “Extraordinary Believers” (working title) with Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, creators of the Emmy-Award winning “Robot Chicken,” the longest running stop-motion show on television. The executive producers on the project are Seth Green, Matt Senreich, and creators/writers/executive producers are Eric Towner and John Harvatine IV.

The guys behind this will soon be releasing original content for Xbox

 “Fearless”

“Fearless,” (working title) is an unscripted series currently in pilot production starring Paul de Gelder, an Australian Navy bomb clearance diver and shark attack survivor who takes on an adrenaline-fueled quest to aid individuals who risk their lives to make the world a better place. “Fearless” will be produced by Australia’s International Emmy-Award winning production company, Cordell Jigsaw Zapruder (CJZ).

 “Gun Machine”

Xbox Entertainment Studios acquired the rights to “Gun Machine,” a hardboiled detective thriller based on the New York Times bestselling novel by Warren Ellis. Ellis will executive produce with Brett Conrad (“The Killing,” “Sons of Anarchy,” Netflix’s upcoming “Marco Polo”) who has signed on to write the pilot script about a detective tracking a serial killer who is tied to a mysterious collection of guns used in infamous New York murders.

 Untitled JASH Comedy/Variety Half Hour

In this unique comedy format developed by Xbox Entertainment Studios with JASH (a comedy collective founded by Sarah Silverman, Michael Cera, Tim and Eric and Reggie Watts), the biggest names in comedy will showcase the people that make them laugh. Each week, a different comedian will host/curate a show featuring new and unsung talent, in various video formats. Sarah Silverman will host the pilot episode and Daniel Kellison (“Late Night/Late Show with David Letterman,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “Crank Yankers”) will executive produce. The series has a pilot commitment and will begin shooting in June.

“Winterworld”

Xbox Entertainment Studios and IDW Entertainment are co-developing a limited event live-action series based on Chuck Dixon and artist Jorge Zaffino’s seminal graphic novel series “Winterworld,” in which our world has been encased in ice from pole-to-pole. The surviving humans have formed tribes that war, enslave and trade with one another in an effort to survive the infinite winter. Ted Adams and David Ozer from IDW Entertainment, and Rick Jacobs and Dave Alpert from Circle of Confusion (“Walking Dead”) will executive produce.

Out of print for 20 years but on its way to an Xbox near you!

Compile Heart teases ‘strong announcement’ for April 30th

Fairy-Fencer-F-debut- (3)

Today Compile Heart teased that they have a “strong announcement” to make on April 30th. This taser was done by the company’s parent company Idea Factory over on Twitter.

Unfortunately further details about the announcement were not given at this time but it is worth noting that since Compile Heart organized the Galapagos label which was designed to create games specifically for the Japanese audience, only one game has been developed under that label and it was Fairy Fencer F for the PlayStation 3. It is highly likely that this announcement will relate to a new game being announced, likely either a sequel to Fairy Fencer F or an original title as two Hyperdimension Neptunia titles were just announced a month ago.

Madden NFL 15 hitting store shelves on August 26

madden-nfl-15-reveal-01

As one would expect, after the release of Madden NFL 25 last year, EA Sports has now announced that they are planning on releasing this year’s iteration of the annual series, this time simply called Madden NFL 15, on August 26th in North America with Australia getting the title on August 28th. Unfortunately for those hoping this release would be devoted entirely for the current-gen consoles, Madden NFL 15 is being released on both current and last-gen consoles meaning it will be released on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 in August.

Details as to what this game will add to the series are thin at the moment, though EA has said that there will be new dramatic camera angles as well as “dynamic pre-game and halftime features,” so for now check out this little preview trailer below.

The Sandbox PC Review

The-Sandbox-Boxart

The Sandbox
Developer: PIXOWL INC.
Publisher: PIXOWL INC.
Platforms: PC (Reviewed), Mac, Android, iPhone, iPad
Release Date: April 22nd, 2014
Price: $9.99 – Available Here

Overview

The Sandbox was originally a mobile-based game, one that allowed its user free-reign over what they wanted to create and how they wanted to do it, similar to Minecraft, though it doesn’t utilize a first-person view. The Sandbox is a clever little indie title with simplistic graphics and straight-forward gameplay that I fear might only appeal to a certain group of players. However, the title is worth trying if you’re not afraid to shell out a few bucks to purchase it. Whether it be the pixelated graphics or the variety of missions you can partake in, The Sandbox offers a very unique experience for anyone who enjoys falling sand games. The game is currently available for purchase on Steam through Early Access for $9.99. This latest version is for the PC and Mac, and is almost an identical port of the iOS and Android versions.

The-Sandbox-Screenshot-03

Gameplay

Gameplay in The Sandbox is dependent on what the player wants to do. There is a “Create” game type that allows a player to create whatever they want. The game offers a huge suite of tools to use when creating your own personalized landscapes. Let’s begin with some of the basics. The first “pixel” that you can start dropping down into your own personalized sandbox is soil. By holding your mouse down, you can pour soil down onto your browser, allowing you to control just how much you want layered over the base.

The-Sandbox-Screenshot-04

Each different element reacts to other elements in their own unique ways. They even get dispersed differently when you use them. For example, when you use the “electric” element, electricity courses through your cursor downwards in an open, erratic fan pattern, similar to lightning. Other elements like soil and sand simply falls down from your cursor’s location. Also, as I’ve said earlier, elements interact with other elements and objects differently. Electricity will course through metal, and when stone is heated, it’ll turn into lava. You can also freeze water or turn it into water vapors, which leads to clouds. The game provides endless possibilities for the player to control.

The-Sandbox-Screenshot-07

Some of the weirder objects and units you can manipulate includes musical instruments, dinosaurs, and humanoids that you can give special tools and skills to survive in the world you create. You can make your human a lumberjack by sprinkling some pixelated “skills” over them, and voila, you have created a wood-cutting maniac. These skills and powers grants your humans the ability to survive in the wild. It’s quite an interesting little system that they’ve created concerning the actions and tools you’re provided with.

There is also a Play mode, which allows you to play through certain missions in The Sandbox. They range from the Initial Story, where you get to learn the ins and outs of the gameplay, Contraptions, which teaches you all about the tiny gizmos and gadgets you can use through the tools, and even Robocalypse, where you take on robots in different situations. This game mode provides a lot of different and unique scenarios for players to work through. Some missions are ridiculously easy and simplistic, where the game will ask you to do something like make mud. (Understandably, this is one of the more simple missions) Other missions are surprisingly difficult and really complex, almost to the point of making me want to rip my hair out, although it may just be me. For example, there’s a mission where you have to get a “virus” out of a maze, but other than that, you have to figure out your own way of doing things.

The-Sandbox-Screenshot-06

There are actually more to this game than meets the eye.  Beyond the wide variety of tools and interesting missions, there are also achievements and galleries for players to take part in. Achievements are earned as you progress through the game, and there are plenty of achievements to earn by playing the game, like earning new pixels/elements, and playing the game more. You can also share your creations through the in-game gallery, where you can view other player’s own creations.

The gameplay overall is vast, however, it’s the kind of game where players might find themselves slowly becoming angrier at the progression through the game. Of course, this isn’t indicative of all gamers, but the game’s model is difficult to grasp in the beginning. With so many tools, players might find it difficult to ease their way into the gameplay, especially if they dive into the Create mode. While the missions do teach players the ins and outs of the tools, it might take a while to learn them all. The game does teach you all the nooks and crannies though, so if you’re patient, this game might be worth it.

Visuals & Audio

The visuals and audio of the game is decent. The simple pixelated graphics of the game lends itself to its quirky and comedic atmosphere. However, the retro graphics does not really work on a PC. The pixels are HUGE when the game is in full screen mode and actually makes the pixels look very distorted, and frankly, does not do the actual game justice. The PC version received HD treatment, specifically for this problem, so it does get a little better in the Create mode. The audio isn’t too bad, with unique sounds appearing for each different element used. It makes it much more interesting to hear the actual sounds of the elements you’re using while putting together your own little universe.

The-Sandbox-Screenshot-02

Overall

All in all, The Sandbox is a title worthy of a gamer’s time, though the steep price should not be overlooked. $9.99 for a title that is a port from a mobile game is rather difficult to justify, but if you enjoy simulation titles where you get to create your own little world, filled with little details and organisms. While the game has its kinks and issues, its definitely fixable, especially since The Sandbox is in its Early Access phase. If you’re willing to purchase the title and you have some time on your hands to learn everything about the game, this is definitely a title I would pick up.
