Overview

Kick-Ass-2-Screenshot-01

I was looking forward to this title when I checked out the pictures and screenshots that I received. Kick-Ass 2 was developed by Freedom Factory and published by United Independent Entertainment GmbH, the publishers of other titles like Professional Farmer 2014: Platinum Edition. I’m kind of disappointed to say that the title did not live up to my expectation. There were a lot of contributing factors that made it less than stellar, and while some parts of the game were done pretty decently, the overall feel of the game is definitely disappointing. I felt like the movie was pretty good itself, and this is definitely not targeted at the film, but the game itself is not something to be proud of. More often than not, I found myself staring at the screen in disbelief, either cringing at the voice-acting or getting frustrated by the slow combat. I wasn’t happy with the outcome, and here’s why.

Gameplay

Kick-Ass-2-Screenshot-03

Gameplay is very simple, but not in a good way.You have a variety of “combos” that you can use to defeat your opponents, but after you exhaust your entire arsenal, there isn’t much left to discover. You can’t discover new moves or unlock new weapon animations. Everything is given to you from the very beginning. While it was slightly entertaining in the beginning of the game, I quickly grew bored of the repetitive moves and fight sequences. It seems to be a trend that you encounter a group of 3-5 thugs, and you slowly have to whittle away at the group with your two batons. While the amount of enemies you encounter slowly rises, t     his quickly becomes trivial as you get into a rhythm of beating baddies up from every angle. You also can only play as Kick Ass throughout the game. I would have loved to play as some other characters, such as Hit Girl, but I guess the developers didn’t think that was a worthy look.

The combat in this game is quite straight-forward. You use WASD to run around, and you use your left and right mouse button to attack the thugs. Navigating the camera in Kick-Ass 2 is pretty weird, and it becomes a chore to have to swivel my camera every few seconds to adjust my point of view. You also have to combo your moves to do any consistent damage, otherwise you will only throw out a kick or a swing of the baton every few seconds, making it difficult to get anything done. The combat is really clunky in that sense, and I definitely had to force myself to push through the next few stages. The game doesn’t have a Save function that allows you to save wherever you want. You have to finish a stage for the game to save, which makes it very annoying if you want to continue gameplay, as it makes it necessary for you to completely re-do a stage if you left in the middle of the game.

Kick-Ass-2-Screenshot-02

One of the things that I found pretty annoying about Kick-Ass 2 was the finisher design for combat. Every time you smacked an enemy around for a while, an option comes up for you to interact with them, whether it be a right or left click, or the Alt button. Doing this will allow you, Kick-Ass, to execute a finishing move to finish off your opponent. In theory, this sounds awesome, but the finishing moves takes so long to complete that you end up trying to actively avoid using them, as it allows you to finish your objectives quicker. I have no problems with intricate finishing moves, but the time it took to use one and the limited amount of finishers that are provided ends up creating a cheap experience for players. After a while of playing, it was actually more satisfying for me to simply kick a thug in the head to end him, instead of prolonging the fight by knocking him down and slowly teasing him with blows until I break his arm.

Beyond the simplistic controls, players are provided a little boost to use whenever the battery sign below their health is full. By pressing “E”, the default key, Kick Ass uses his tasers on himself to completely block out all pain taken by him. Whenever you get hit, none of your health is reduced, and effectively allows you to tear through your enemies without worrying about getting hit. When you don’t have the benefit of this, using the Space bar will allow you to roll out of harm’s way. The AI in Kick-Ass 2 follows a very straight-forward pattern, attacking when you’re in the middle of attacking another thug. This makes it very easy to predict what’s going to happen, and honestly creates a no-challenge scenario for players. While some people might be more interested in the story than the gameplay, I feel that the gameplay is so clunky that you don’t have time to appreciate the dialogue or storyline, if there was any.

Visuals & Audio

Kick-Ass-2-Screenshot-04

Visually speaking, I actually liked the artwork and graphics used. It felt like a comic book, and I will say that I was captivated by the graphics of the characters and the scenery. It isn’t graphically intensive, but it got the job done and definitely was one of the strong points of this title. The voice-acting, on the other hand, was atrocious. Kick Ass and Hit Girl’s voice actors sounded awkward and weird. It felt like they were trying either too much or too little during their conversations together, and honestly, I cringed a few times as I heard Kick Ass try to muster up a joke during the scenes. The soundtrack is also unappealing and does nothing for the title.

Overall

Kick-Ass-2-Screenshot-05

I’m disappointed. I truly am. I enjoy Kick-Ass and think that it’s quite enjoyable as a comic book, but the game turned out terribly. This wouldn’t be the first time a movie-turned-video-game ended in flames, but I was hoping that a bit more effort would be put in to this title. I felt really bad playing Kick-Ass 2, and while I definitely wished I could give this game a higher score, I can’t convince myself that there was a deeper motive to their design. The game was slow, awkward, and made me feel like I was navigating through a first-date gone wrong. It’s a shame. The title could have had a lot of potential if they polished the game a bit more before publishing it.

Xbox Newsbeat: August 16 – August 22

Forza-5-Car-Reveals-Week-6-02

I feel like there should be epic music playing with heavy drums and awesome fanfare. Why? it is time for Xbox Newsbeat, that’s why! Xbox Newsbeat is your one stop, all access, best possible place to get all of the hottest news from Microsoft HQ. This week is pretty jam-packed, with three articles all dedicated to Xbox One (I am starting to notice that we are having fewer and fewer Xbox 360 articles here on Newsbeat. I hope it isn’t going the way of Windows Phone). Since we have so much to get through today, I say we get right to it!

Next Xbox One Update Rolls Out with New Social and Mobile Features

We’ve talked a lot about the latest Xbox One system update here on Newsbeat, but well that is because it is so damn awesome and necessary for the console that it is impossible to ignore! The roll-out of the new update began last week and if you haven’t gotten it yet, here is the list of new features you can expect from your sexy black console:

  • Mobile purchase: One of the most requested features on Xbox Feedback. Using Xbox SmartGlass or on Xbox.com, you can remotely purchase games and Add-on content. No more waiting to begin downloading when you get home – if your console is set to automatically take updates, your console will begin downloading your purchase.
  • Activity feed updates: Microsoft are adding new ways for you to interact with friends in the activity feed. The interface will change to a single column scrolling list that is longer and includes more content. They’ll add the ability to post text to your feed, and to “like” and comment on feed items. You can share game clips and anything else in the feed with friends either publicly (to your activity feed) or privately (as an attachment to a message). You’ll also be notified when anyone likes, comments on or shares your items. Each user will get a personal feed on their profile, so you can see what specific friends have been up to. And, with SmartGlass, you can see what your friends have shared to their activity feed and “like” specific posts (additional activity feed support coming in future SmartGlass updates).
  • Low battery notification: You asked for it, now a notification will pop up when your controller battery is getting low.
  • Disable notifications during video: Adding the ability to turn off notifications based on feedback we heard from you.
  • Enabling 3D Blu-ray: An update to the Blu-ray player app will enable 3D Blu-ray functionality on Xbox One.
  • Last seen time in Friends list: Direct from Xbox Feedback, the friends list will now show how long it’s been since a friend has been online. For example, “Last seen 20m ago: Forza Motorsport 5.”

So there you have it: A tonne of new features to help your gaming experience run that much smoother.

Risen 3: Titan Lords Review

Overview
Risen has been a franchise that has been around for a good bit now, but has never been able to truly become a household name due to the series shortcomings. With each entry however, the name has attracted some fanfare and lead us to Risen 3: Titan Lords. This sequel has all of the ingredients for success and as the old saying goes, the third time is indeed a charm. While now showing its age and launching at the end of a console generation, does this title stand as Piranha Bytes masterpiece to remember, or did the ship sink long ago – only to leave behind a see full of potential? Let’s find out.

Story
The story in Risen 3: Titan Worlds spans around 25 hours, where the player takes up the role as a nameless pirate who is out to recover his soul after dark events occur. As quests unfold on your journey, you will encounter dubious factions that you must align with, while making some odd yet endearing friends with some of the richer personalities in the game, such as the very charismatic Bones and the rather dull Patty who in my opinion serves just to be a female voice for the journey. There are a ton of quests, NPCs, and so on, but I found it a bit hard to truly find myself in this world with the quests at hand, as frankly – the quests are never too interesting.

risen-3-titan-lords-screenshot-01

Sure, this title has atmosphere, or I would best put it as charm where the overall narrative seems to effect the mood over the entire island, but a lot of the game just is not memorable. No matter how far I seemed to progress, I rarely laughed or found myself overly excited with the events occurring within the game, as the quest list just seemed to be bogged down constantly with these tasks that seemed to accomplish nothing. The plot is an interesting one and yeah, its a ton of fun to encounter some of that Caribbean flare in a pirate’s life, but it can be easy to want to take a break from dealing with this world as it is a bit too much of the same over and over to deal with in long bursts – which is the same feeling I had from other Risen titles (and not exactly what I enjoy seeing in any RPG).

Gameplay
Plot aside, Risen 3 does have some fairly decent gameplay elements at work. Players can dodge, parry, and perform a wide array of magic attacks as the game rolls along, and the combat comes of as fluid and tight for most of the experience. I wasn’t blown away that I had to press a button to enter combat, as I would constantly go in and out of a fighting stance during a battle early on, but this is something you learn from and get better at as you progress forward. Sadly, it takes a good while to find enough trainers to customize yourself as even though almost every NPC seems to be a trainer where lessons can be obtained, I found myself rather frustrated as the world was a bit too cluttered with trainers that I just had no use for that the time of the first encounter.

risen-3-titan-lords-screenshot-02

Glory is the definitive element of the game, allowing players to essentially level their stats. Think of it as a skill tree system, but a bit more advanced. While glory is obtained from almost everything in the game, players still must utilize the game’s economy system and trainers in order to perfect the class they are trying to level up. Those trainers I mentioned are important and while yes, they are unnecessarily scattered and of to great of a quantity, they still prove useful while obtaining new skills and spells to perform. It honestly takes hours before a person with a love of magic using can get to transform our hero into a full blown user, but the game also makes up for that with items like scrolls that give the player a bit of a temporary fix while they wait.

risen-3-titan-lords-screenshot-03

My biggest gripe with the combat is the dodging. This is a rather new thing for the Risen series, but seems to enhance the combat by making it tighter. That said, it also takes away a lot of that fine strategy that was needed to gain victory in previous games, which makes a simple technique more of a double edge sword this go-around. Ship combat, while honestly a rare sight, was probably the most polished element of the game that was not present enough. Players can take on sea monsters with these moments and finally get a chance to test their ship over rough waters in a truly fun little event. You can also battle opposing ships, but most of this takes place in a cutscene and just leads to more hand to hand combat on the vessel itself. Its almost as if the development team were afraid to take away from the core system as to why these sea battles don’t occur more, but hopefully if there is future installments, we can have a greater emphasis on them.

risen-3-titan-lords-screenshot-04

Those who love exploration will be happy to know that this open world is full of a large variation of fauna, enemy types (such as wild animals and mages), and towns filled with vocal NPCs. It can be a joy to see a new journey to a different location is set to unfold, even if the combat or narrative never feels as inviting as the environments themselves. This also may something exclusive to the Playstation 3 version of the game I reviewed, but Titan Lords has quite a few bugs as well. I know, its an open world game on the PS3, we should be used to this as even Bethesda have issues, but it can be aggravating when the player discovers that most of these issues are with the combat itself and can cause a loss and anger when doing something as important as a horde or boss battle.

Visuals & Audio
I’ll be honest. When I first turned on Risen 3, I was unimpressed with the visuals. Models appear as rough and jagged, and some screen tearing during cutscenes as well as wonky animations will instantly pull you out of the game quickly upon starting. That said, the more you go forward, the better it all becomes. The developers put a high emphasis on making a colorful world and even though it is imperfect, the many locations all feel different from the next and are as mentioned, a joy to explore. Sure, its a dated world, but still charming and visually delightful due to how much detail that was applied overall.

risen-3-titan-lords-screenshot-05

The voice acting from the main protagonist is rather bad. I know, this isn’t a big deal, but considering he is supposed to represent the player, well – yeah, those one-liner dialogue choices get cheesey, old, and cringeworthy rather fast. The support cast however are much improved over the main though, and while there isn’t a ton of memorable faces, we do have some distinct personalities running a muck throughout the experience. As far as the soundtrack goes, the tunes within definitely fit well with the pirate theme presented, but quickly fade into the background and like the cast, never do that much to improve the overall world you’re exploring.

Overall
Risen 3: Titan Lords is not a bad game. In fact, it is a competent RPG that will deliver hours of entertainment for those with enough patience to look past its flaws. It does however fall into that same void that the console Divinity titles, as well as Two Worlds II, and others of the same genre got lost in. Sure, we have a lot of potential, but Titan Lords spends so much time trying to be unique that it forgets how to capture the player and make them feel like they’re a part of this interesting little universe. Glitches and blandness aside, its good to see this series still standing and hopefully, we will see Risen continue to rise during the next generation.

Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit anime to be released next week by Viz

Moribito-guardian-of-the-spirit-box-artViz Media has revealed that they are planning on releasing the entirety of the Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit anime series in one collection that will be available for purchase for both Blu-ray and DVD starting on August 26th.

Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit originally aired back in 2007 and was animated by Production I.G. and it was even given a Western release at one point by the now nearly defunct Media Blasters. If the name sounds familiar it is also due to the series spending some time on Toonami back in 2009, though even then the airing of the anime was interrupted often.

As such this is a good chance to pick up the full twenty six episode series in one collection on Blu-ray for $54.97 or on DVD for $44.82. The story of the series is described by Viz as follows:

Young Prince Chagum has been suspected of demonic possession by court advisors who see only one solution: death. But his salvation may lie in the hands of Balsa, the spear-wielding bodyguard from Kanbal, the kingdom across the mountains. Her vow to save eight worthy souls has led her to the imperiled Chagum and into the mystery of the water spirit, a mystical entity that may hold the key to saving millions of lives from drought. Her skill and tenacity are legendary, but can she fend off an entire empire?
