2K and Gearbox Software Pull Back the Covers on Battleborn

battleborn-screenshot-001

2K and Gearbox Software has released the listing of game modes and features of their upcoming MOBA/shooter mashup Battleborn. The game will launch with 25 unique heroes, a story mode, and three multiplayer modes.

The game features a persistent leveling system that will have players and hero leveling up together. Player levels will unlock badges, titles, and global loot as they gain commander levels. Additionally each hero can level up from 1-10, allowing for changes in their skill tree and providing some extra character skins.

Battleborn’s story mode can be played either single player or cooperatively in both split screen or online. Story mode missions can be played in any order and replayed for better loot.

Competitive multiplayer will pit two teams of five against each other in three objective based modes. Incursion is the traditional MOBA game mode with players defending their base from enemy minions while they attempt to push their minions into the enemy base. Devastation will see players fighting over capture points on the map. Meltdown is a slight twist on Incursion, with teams attempting to protect their minions, with points scored for every friendly minion who is able to toss itself into the incinerator in the centre of the map.

A playable Battleborn will be available at E3 2015 this year. The full retail release is expected this winter for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Honestly, I saw this coming as most everyone did.

Sweet Tooth Pulls in to Rocket League; New Trailer Emerges

rocket-league-sweet-tooth-01

Rocket League is a title you should staple to your tongue if you own a PS4/PC and love insanity this summer. The reason why I say this is that developer Psyonix are bringing the game to both platforms, and have just made the deal sweeter. Straight from Twisted Metal, Sweet Tooth will be making a cameo as a playable character, meaning you can use that ten billion other combinations promised within the game’s customization on other cars, as we know Sweet Tooth would have certainly been #1 on the to-do list for just about everybody.

Now some people may not still be aware of this little soccer-car mashup, but check out some information below to get acquainted quickly:

Rocket League Key Features Include:
  • New Season Mode: Players now can enjoy a full single-player experience with Season mode, bolstered by extensive vehicle customizations, unlockable items, multiple arenas, and more.
  • Fully Upgraded Online, Local and Splitscreen Multiplayer Modes: Fans of the original will love the returning options for two- to four-player competition, from on-the-couch split-screen competition to the robust online play.
  • Team-focused Gameplay: Rocket League‘s team-oriented play compels gamers to learn short- and long-term tactics and strategies to stay in the game, challenge their friends, and stay atop the monthly leaderboards.
  • Physics-driven Vehicle Interactions: Built with rocket-equipped vehicles capable of aerial attacks, passes and shots, and physics-driven ball action, Rocket League is a wild, visceral action-sports experience.
  • Content Overload: Rocket League builds upon its predecessor with a healthy array of completely new unlockable vehicles, arenas, more than 100 customization items, and other surprises.
  • Dedicated Gameplay Servers: Super-smooth online gameplay guarantees an even better Rocket-Powered Battle-Car experience.
  • Broadcast-Quality Replays: Gamers can play with, stylize, and create the ultimate replay of entire games with the new replay system. Fast forward, rewind, or view the action from anywhere in the arena!

Rocket League is a futuristic action-sports game where players pilot rocket-powered vehicles in an enhanced version of soccer by driving their vehicles into the ball and other players in a variety of arenas. Rocket League uses an advanced physics system to simulate realistic interactions between cars and the ball, where mass and momentum determine how hard balls and cars hit each other, creating a unique and visceral playing experience.

Rocket League reminds me of the creations we used to see on Forge in Halo 3, and that is a compliment as it takes a very creative mind to come up with such a unique concept. You’re looking at the sleeper hit of the summer, folks – so check out Rocket League’s new trailer below and get ready to snag a purchase come July 7th.

Amiibo – A Journey to Collect Them All

amiibo-logo-01

CHAPTER 1 – A JOURNEY TO COLLECT THEM ALL

When Nintendo announced their line of figures that were set to rival Activision’s Skylanders, or Disney’s Disney Infinity, the internet exploded. Originally made for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, it was clear from the get-go that these figures were going to be HUGE. All over the web, people were talking about how they wanted to collect them all, and stores like EB Games were selling out pre-orders faster than you could say “Do you have Villager?”

What nobody could anticipate however, was just how large the demand was going to be. From the second they launched, these colourful, intricately detailed figures of people’s favourite childhood game characters practically flew off the shelves. Not only that, but entire communities on Reddit, Facebook and Twitter were formed just to discuss and trade the figures, as well as tracking which stores had what figure, and which were the rarest and most sought after amiibo.

So recently, when I got an email from EB Games about the limited edition “Silver Mario” amiibo did I decide to try a little experiment. I wanted to collect each figure in the line. Sounds easy right, especially since ANYTHING is easy to collect, as long as you have the money to do so. Well, with the scarcity of some figures, individuals out there were buying out rarer ones in bulk with the sole intention of reselling at a huge markup to gouge the customers, so my aim was to avoid these sellers at all costs.

In the end, I decided that I would shop only from retail stores like Target, JB Hi-Fi, EB Games etc just like any other ordinary consumer, with the goal of seeing just how hard it was to collect every amiibo out there. Not only that, but I wanted to share my adventures with you all. (just note however, that I live in New South Wales, Australia, so my adventure isn’t guaranteed to reflect your own search for amiibo). So before we get onto any of the adventure, first lets talk about the rules:

da-rules-screenshot-01

  1. Figures must be purchased from a retail store
  2. No more than $18 can be spent on a single figure
  3. Online orders are allowed but not encouraged
  4. Pre-orders are NOT allowed
  5. Lay-buys ARE allowed
  6. Shopping can be done at any time of the day or night

So why those rules? Well like I said above, I wanted to avoid the online scalpers and gougers and see just how difficult it is to track down amiibo figures in the wild. I want to avoid online orders as much as possible and instead use the online shopping capabilities of Target and EB Games as more of a tool to determine scarcity than anything else.

I decided to not pre-order anything, because, well it kind of seems like cheating to have a figure before it is in the wild. I did however decide that lay-buying already released figures is a little more acceptable so that I don’t spend my week’s rent in one trip to Kmart. I also wanted to be able to shop at any time of the day, because I know a few stores around me that are both open early and closed late, which makes it a little easier to pick up some figures as they are released.

amiibo-chapter-1-photo-01

So lets jump right in! My amiibo collection started the day I picked up Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, when I picked up a Wii Fit Trainer with the sole purpose of training her up to Lv50 on Smash and showing my brother that she really is a force to be reckoned with. As I picked up the figure, next to her was Animal Crossing’s Villager, one of the figures I actually really wanted from the set (as at that time I had logged almost 400 hours into New Leaf), but I had already spent too much money on games that day so decided “next time…” Oh boy was that a mistake.

Fast forward to Christmas, and I got gifted a Donkey Kong amiibo by one of my brothers, as Donkey Kong had been my absolute favourite Nintendo character ever since I was a child (in a story that I may tell you all another time). Since I had never seen another Villager amiibo hit the shelves, I figured this was about where my collection would end. That was until I got an email from EB Games… This email in fact:

silver-mario-email-screenshot-01

Just on a random whim I thought “that one looks kinda cool, why not,” and immediately pre-ordered the figure online. A few hours later and they were completely sold out, and going for $90+ dollars on Ebay. Yikes! This revelation is what sparked me to try this little experiment in the first place. I will say though, that since Silver Mario was pre-ordered, I will not be officially including him in the list until I see at least ONE on a store shelf somewhere.

amiibo-chapter-1-photo-02

Fast forward to May 29th, the day before Splatoon’s amiibo triple pack, Jigglypuff and Greninja were set for release. I was browsing around an EB Games store that was a little out of my usual shopping area when I saw one figure that was listed as “in store only,” and two that were flat out listed as “Out of Stock” on their website. These figures were Toad, Bowser (Super Mario), and Ike respectively, so I nabbed those bad boys and increased my collection ever so slightly.

amiibo-chapter-1-photo-03

Feeling pretty proud of myself, I made sure to take note of which figures I had seen time and time again (ones like Link, Zelda, Mario, Yoshi, Pikachu, Donkey Kong etc) and headed on my way. I needed to get an early night’s rest to ensure that I would be up bright and early for the release of the Pokemon amiibo.

May 30th, It was 5:30am and my car was frozen over, but none the less my girlfriend and I rugged up in our thickest woolen hoodies and headed down to nearest Target which happened to open at 6am. My plan was to grab the Greninja, Jigglypuff and Splatoon amiibo then head out for some hot breakfast. When we arrived however, We saw that there were more than one amiibo hunter already waiting, and not only that but the figures had not yet been placed on the shelves. So, I decided to check out the rest of their stock while the employee fished them out from the back for us.

When I got to the shelves, I was stunned. There were plenty of amiibo that I had never seen out in the wild before. Meta Knight, Sonic, Wario, Pac-Man, CHARIZARD! I wanted to grab them all, but since I was already buying almost $90 worth of amiibo, I decided to only take Charizard with me and rushed the other four off to the Lay-buy department until  a later date.

wario-figure-01 sonic-figure-01 pac-man-figure-01 meta-knight-figure-01

By the time I got back to the entertainment section, the store employee had fished out the Jigglypuff, Greninja and the Splatoon amiibo and us three amiibo hunters who had braved the elements and the early morning for glory were all debating who should go first in line. I know what you’re thinking and this wasn’t some neckbeard argument in the middle of the store, or people trampling over one another. No quite the opposite in fact, everyone there was polite and courteous and offering for the others to go ahead of them in line. So be sure to take that on board folks, all of those horror stories about people pushing kids out of the way or buying eight figures at are just a vocal and horrid minority!

As far as stock levels go. It looked like they only had four of each Greninja and Jigglypuff, but an absolute boat load of the amiibo individuals and triple packs. These numbers seem about accurate for everywhere else I have gone since then. Anywho, after a few computer hiccups and a McDonalds breakfast, we were back home with my collection having grown a little bit:

Not too bad for two days worth of shopping!

PROGRESS REPORT

At the end of every chapter, I will be putting in my own personal progress report that summarises the week’s activities in the form of an infographic. I found this one, posted by Reddit user MrMime_Time, that perfectly suits this purpose. If an amiibo has a tick over it, that means that I either have the figure or have it on Lay-buy. The squares underneath the figure show how rare I have found it to be during my adventures, with the key as follows

  • Blue: Not yet released
  • Green: Common
  • Orange: Uncommon
  • Red: Rare
  • Rainbow: Haven’t seen one/Unicorn

Steam to Offer Refunds on Newly Purchased Games

Steam-Logo

Valve has announced that refunds will now be simplified and easily done on Steam. While there has always been a way to open a ticket in order to request a refund, it has never been in official policy. Valve has changed this in order to help consumers out when there are issues with purchases. Like their announcement for Steam Broadcasting, this comes out of nowhere as a very consumer-friendly move.

The popular PC developer/distributor has stated that refunds will not apply to everything, but it looks like the majority of situations are covered in their post. To break it down, games & software will be refundable within two weeks of purchase with under two hours of game time. Additionally, in-game purchases in Valve games will be refundable within 48 hours, assuming they haven’t been used.

Refunds are also to be refundable on pre-purchased titles, for the entire run up to the release of the game and then for two weeks after (with the same caveat of with less than two hours of game play). Steam Wallet funds can be refunded during two weeks as well, as long as none of it has been used.

They have also stated that purchases made out of Steam will be refundable. Neither will Movies or gifts. If you are VAC banned in a game before requesting a refund, that game will not be refundable.

To prevent abusers, Valve will be watching users to see if they are just trying games out as demos. How they will determine this has not been stated, but abusers will be flagged to no longer have the right to receive refunds.

Steam refunds are live now through their help screen.

ultra-street-fighter-iv-screenshot-003

Last week on May 26th Capcom and Sony released Ultra Street Fighter IV onto the PlayStation 4 and despite being a port of a game that has been given numerous upgrades for the past few years, it seemed that the upgrade to the PlayStation 4 left plenty to be desired.

Thanks to a bumpy launch that some people described as nearly unplayable and forced the fighting game tournament Evo 2015 to permanently switch to the 360 version of the game, Sony and Capcom have quickly been working on getting the issues patched.

Harvest Moon: Seeds of Memories Announced for Wii U, PC, iOS, and Android

harvest-moon-seeds-of-memories-logo

Natsume has announced that they will be releasing another new Harvest Moon game, titled Harvest Moon: Seeds of Memories, for the Wii U, PC, iOS, and Android this winter. It is worth noting that this is not related to the Bokujō Monogatari series that the games have been based off of in the past and is Natsume’s own creation just like Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley.

Details are still fairly scarce on Harvest Moon: Seeds of Memories, but Natsume has said that the title is inspired by the classic Harvest Moon titles with players having to revitalize a farm and befriend the villagers to unlock “Seeds of Memories” that can be obtained in various ways, such as raising your first cow or giving a villager their favorite item.

Cows, sheep, and chickens will return as livestock while a horse can be used to ride around and a dog can be kept as a pet, though a bobcat will also be tameable. Similar to past games, the title will feature five male and five female marriage candidates depending on the player’s gender.

While no footage of the game has been released so far, Natsume has said that they will be showing the title off at E3 in two weeks.
