Story
“Dr. Diggabone’s so lazy he won’t even walk… But that’s not stopping him from going after 16 priceless lost relics. Jump in and take control as you tilt and flip the world to send him on a quest for instant fortune and fame.” [via http://www.lazyraiders.com/]

That little summary taken from the Lazy Raiders website pretty much sums up the entire story plot.

You play as Dr. Diggabone or your avatar (In Dr. Diggabone’s clothes). Even your avatar has become as lazy as Dr. Diggabone as gravity pulls you through the caves in search for your fortune. The game is a puzzle game, so it doesn’t require much of a story other then why you are there in the first place.

Gameplay
The gameplay of Lazy Raiders requires you to shift the map by spinning the room and letting gravity do all the work. Since Dr. Diggabone is too lazy to move, he will just let gravity drag him down. By spinning and flipping the level you help him collect gems, idols, and relics. You can’t appreciate the entire mechanic until you see it for yourself, so here is the trailer for you guys to watch.

If you didn’t watch the trailer, then you really are missing out. So go watch it!

Now that you have watched the trailer, you can see that the game gives a feeling of being rushed, and having to quickly make your decisions. At times this is true but Lazy Raiders is still a puzzle game, so take your time and plan your actions carefully (unless you are going for a good time on the leaderboards, in which case you should do it as fast as possible).

The controls are simple. Y focuses the screen (Some people are quite sensitive to the spinning, and focusing the screen helps reduce the spinning effect slightly). The left and right triggers zoom in and out gradually, while the bumpers zoom in or out to the max level. Finally, A flips the map completely upside down.

Many things will try to kill you while solving these puzzles (actually you will kill yourself, since all the threats are based off of them coming to you due to gravity, or you spinning the map wrong and falling into harm’s way). Spikes are abundant, Boulders flow with gravity, and thieves steal your gems. There are 80 levels for you to master, each revealing even more traps and obstacles to avoid as you search the caves in search for treasure.

Audio
There is a small ambient of background music as you traverse through the levels. The background music helps envelop you within the atmosphere of the game, but it is usually drowned out by boulders hitting walls, blocks falling, and chimes as you pick up gems. The game seems to pride itself on its sound effects because these are more clearly evident and will catch your attention more than the background music.

Achievements

Lazy Raiders is entirely single player and all the achievements just take time, patients, and quick solving. Most of the achievements are pretty easy depending on your skill level, the hardest one is “Legend – Collect all 16 relics and all 192 idols”; pretty much 100% the game. If you manage to unlock the ‘Legend’ achievement you will most likely have unlocked every other achievement already.

The game also includes a few gamer pictures unlocked by starting the game. Two avatar awards are also within the game.

Dr. Diggabone’s Outfit – Unlocked by just starting the game.
Dr. Diggabone’s Hat – Unlocked by collecting all 16 relics (beating the game)
(Below the achievement list is a picture with an avatar wearing the outfit and the hat in game, since it is the only thing your avatar can wear in the game)

The Achievement List is:

  • Prodigal -Find the mysterious Crystal Skull.
  • Olympian – Finish a maze in less than the gold time.
  • Filthy Rich – Amass your first million.
  • Friendly – Collect a relic with your Avatar.
  • Collector – Collect 25 idols.
  • Conqueror – Collect all 5 relics of the Seven Cities of Gold.
  • Generous – Let the Thieves snatch at least 1 million.
  • Spelunker – Collect all 5 relics of the Arctic Wrecks.
  • Guinea Pig – Get hurt by every type of trap.
  • Marshall – Collect all 5 relics of the Wild West.
  • Sprinter – Finish a maze in less than the developer’s time.
  • Legend – Collect all 16 relics and all 192 idols.

Overview
Lazy Raiders is a puzzle game with a unique “Spin” (excuse my pun and the ones that follow). It will keep you on your toes trying not to die, while at the same time forcing you to make accurately quick gravity switches to collect the gems. Lazy Raiders starts you off smoothly but quickly tosses you into the nearly impossible. Lazy Raiders is a truly mind spinning puzzle game and you won’t even notice the clock’s hands spinning as time flies by, except for those of you who use digital clocks (yeah, go ahead ruin my pun streak!). I give Lazy Raiders 9 capsules out of 10, so go buy it and get lazy! Hopefully this game gets onto the Iphone where the game mechanics can truly flourish.

9-0-capsules-out-of-10

Pros

  • Avatar Support! (pity you can’t wear your clothes, you instead wear Dr. Biggabone’s clothes)
  • A unique gameplay experience that combines strategic puzzle aspects and quick paced action aspects.
  • Leaderboards can lead to endless hours of competition against your friends and the world.

Cons

  • If you get dizzy easily, this is not a game for you. (I’d suggest downloading the demo first to make sure you can handle the gameplay mechanics).
  • Some of the sound effects reminded me of Mario and took me out of the treasure hunter feeling.
  • When flipping the entire level, it is extremely easy to lose your location and losing your location is dangerous when there are 3 boulders rolling around.

Optional

  • The game is a puzzle game, and is pretty difficult as you get higher up in the levels (especially if you want to get good times for the leaderboards and get every single idol). This can be a Pro or a Con depending on the skill level of the player, and whether they like a challenge or not.

Achievements – The Mentalities for Collecting

Introduction:
I would first like to say hello to the Capsule Computers Community, my name is Dylan Radcliffe and I am the new Editor for Capsule Computers. You have probably seen a few posts by me already, and you can expect many more. To read more background information about me, you can check out my bio in the about section of the site.

Achievements – The Mentalities for Collecting
(This article is focused more towards accumulated achievement score, over trophy count; even though it applies to both areas)

The last decade has introduced us to a new online status marker within games: Achievements. The Xbox 360, steam, and even World of Warcraft have achievements, while the PS3 has trophies. They are unlocked by doing  specific tasks within a game and have actually been around much longer but only recently have been collected and cataloged over a larger quantity of games and then displayed for all to see. Whether they are called achievements or trophies, the bottom line is that they are a system used to track achievements through multiple games and see how much you have played. This score (or trophy count on the PS3) can then be shown off to all your friends. Many people feel that the score is pointless, while others play games solely to increase their score. A conflict occurs between these two groups. The main problem is the misunderstanding that, just because your achievement score is hi doesn’t mean that is the only reason you play, but many people see a hi achievement count and instantly title you as an achievement #####.  There are a few mentalities towards collecting achievements that many people do not consider when titling someone with a hi achievement score. I will proceed to explain a few of these other mentalities to enlighten the general public in the reasons behind collecting achievements. There are a few other Mentalities, but these are the three main reasons.

OCD (Order Compulsive Disorder)-
Gamers who have OCD or even lesser extents of OCD have a compelling urge to complete their games 100%. This group doesn’t feel like a specific game is completed until everything possible to unlock within a game is unlocked, this includes the achievements. These people will buy a game they want, but then spend days trying to get all the achievements after they beat the game and then once they complete the game completely will usually never return to the game unless it has a fun online multiplayer.

The Competitive –
This actually borders upon being an achievement #####, and is usually reserved to groups of friends that all buy the exact same games to play with each other. The group of friends will compete to see who can get the highest achievement score. The competition can lead to a lot of fun between friends. Care must be taken though to not go out and buy easy games just to surpass your friends in score. This category is basically reserved for close friends that always buy the exact same games, and play online with each other.

The non-wealthy –
This group is for gamers who don’t have a lot of money, and can’t get their hands on a bunch of video games. People who fall in this group usually only get a few games for Christmas and their birthday because they don’t have a job or get any allowance. Since they only have a few video games they rely on achievements to extend the life of their games. Before achievements, these were the people that would get every heart container and weapon on all three files of ‘The Legend of Zelda’. These people usually have a hi achievement score alongside a low game count, and many of their games are 100% complete. The main difference between this group and the OCD group, is that the non-wealthy still play for fun and they don’t feel obliged to 100% complete it unless it remains fun. So those achievements that required 500+ hours of online multiplayer to reach 5,000,000 experience (yes, I’m looking at you F.E.A.R. 2) will never be unlocked by the non-wealthy, because after a while it just isn’t fun anymore. Unless they are really poor and this is their only game they will get for 3 years, then they will probably get that achievement.

The main sign of an achievement ##### –
Achievement #####s usually base an entire purchase of off of how difficult the achievements within a game are (don’t get this confused with people who look up the achievements before a purchase, an achievement list can show a rough estimate of how much fun the game will be or how long it will take to beat; people that look for this reason usually go for difficult achievements rather than easy ones). If it looks like a few of the achievements would take too long they don’t buy the game. They will also go out and buy used copies of games that have easy achievements, such as ‘Hannah Montana’ or even ‘King Kong’  and then return it just to get an easy boost.

Conclusion:
Many people who aren’t actually achievement #####s simply say they are to avoid dispute on why their achievement count is so hi. Other people rename themselves as achievement hunters that says they collect achievements but don’t want to be classified with the same group as achievement #####s. The definition an achievement ##### and achievement hunter is in fact entirely different, so classify yourself and others correctly. The exact definition of an achievement ##### is “Person who acquires XBOX 360 console games for the sole purpose of getting all of the achievements for that game to gain gamerscore.”, while an achievement hunter is “Someone who plays 360 and/or Live PC games for fun but also will not stop playing the game for good until her/she has all the achievements.” [via Urban Dictionary].

I hope you enjoyed reading this article, and that you have learned a new perspective into achievement collecting. So, are you wrongfully accused as an achievement #####? If so which category do you fall into? Are you really an achievement hunter hiding underneath an achievement ##### title?

Time to get tactical on Modern Warfare 2 Community Night with Capsule Computers

6

Itttttttssssss Tiiiiiiiiiiiimmmmmmmmmeeeeeeeeeeeee!!! Whoops.. I am a bit UFC crazy at the moment (don’t we all love Bruce Buffer, have you seen the Buffer 360?), but it is time boys and girls, time to get tactical with the Capsule Computers crew on the current #1 Xbox360 game – Modern Warfare 2.

Xbox Australia has agreed to let Capsule Computers host a MW2 community night on Xbox Live.  The time will be 8pm-11pm on Friday 12th March 2010.  This is Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time.  All you have to do before or during that time is message anyone of the following Tango’s :-

Master Abbott
KINGROC69
xI ROCK Ix
DuraRoc

We will add you into the game we are playing if there is room, if not, we will split off and create another room.  What we are thinking of doing is hosting some Private Ground War matches – 9 v 9 – and we can change things around to suit ourselves.  I really want to play Headquarters on Rust with no killstreaks – but we are open to suggestions.

Just to give you a bit of an idea about what it will be like playing with the Capsule Computers crew.

KINGROC69 likes to break out into song – last night it was Volare  – the whole party joined in.  One of the classic MW2 moments. If you are a camper KingRoc69 will adore you forever! One other thing to remember, do NOT, I repeat DO NOT try and steal his care packages, bad things will happen to you.

xI ROCK Ix likes to tube all night and then SMS the crew the next day saying he had a great time and wants to do it again tonight.  He also likes talking to imaginary friends on the phone whilst he is on Live.

Master Abbott likes to get tactical, or so he says, even when he goes 0 – 11.

DuraRoc likes to boost – errr.. so everyone keeps telling him anyway.  He also likes to cut other peoples grass.

Here they all are posing for the Camera, but it seems that MasterAbbott as per usual always has to stuff things up by looking in the opposite direction 😉

Look out for the more information on the community page on the Xbox dashboard soon, just in case you forget. More details to come if there are any, might even be a prize or 2, let’s see what we can do.

Have fun. Convey your thoughts by posting a message below, or send us a message on Live.

@DuraRoc & the Capsule Computers Crew – Stay Frosty
