Puzzlegeddon – Xbox Live Arcade Review

Puzzlegeddon
Publisher: Tecmo
Developer: Pieces Interactive
Platforms: Xbox 360 (Reviewed), PC
Release Date: December 16th, 2009

Story

“Set in an array of galaxies, Puzzlegeddon features a clever mix of puzzle, action, and strategy in a fast-paced and exciting game! Compete for the top spot on the planet by creating multiple combos for the quickest way to gather enough resources to blast your enemies out of this world. Or, if you find yourself on the perilous poisonous planet, solve brainteasers to survive for as long as possible and rack up a high score. Battle up to five players on Xbox LIVE® in a variety of galaxies in this stylish and quirky puzzle brawler.” [Via Xbox.com]

You are on a planet, trying to collect resources to destroy the other people that are also on the planet. That is pretty much the entire story. Like all puzzle games, there isn’t much need for a story.

Gameplay
Puzzle games must use unique gameplay to stand out, because what is fun about buying a game that you could already have played?

Puzzlegeddon almost succeeds in being unique. It feels more like a weird combination of resource collecting, block elimination, and strategy. The gameplay mechanics have been around forever, but Puzzlegeddon succeeds in combining the three for a fun experience.

You must combine 5 or more of the same colored blocks in order to gain some resources for a certain ability. Although there are symbols on the blocks to tell them apart as well, these symbols are very hard to see on smaller TVs. Because of this, this game isn’t very good for colorblind people.

You can move blocks vertically or horizontally to match them up. You can then make those blocks into resources. The beauty of this game is that it doesn’t make the resources until you want it to. You could make huge combo set up and then take the resources whenever you are ready, for a massive resource boost.

Each color resource represents 1 of 4 different abilities to unlock. As you collect resources, the resource gauge will fill up and when you get enough of a specific resource you will be able to use a defensive or offensive attack depending on the type of resource you have collected. Each gauge also has three levels, the higher in the gauge the stronger the ability is. The goal is to kill everyone else and to stay alive at the same time.

Dying isn’t entirely bad though. If you die, you can play a minigame while waiting for the other players to die. This minigame can improve your chances in the next game, or even repsawn you back into the current game.

Audio

The audio in the game is valued the exact same amount as audio in Tetris. It is there just so it isn’t quiet while you are playing. There are a few sound cues to listen out for though. A sound effect will go off when an enemy is using an ability, this is the time to stop and check who is attacking who and take the necessary precautions against the attack if it is coming for you.

Achievements

The achievement list is extremely difficult; also “Duelist” and “Brawny” are impossible since the online community is dead. Luckily the game is addicting enough to let you want to play enough that the other achievements should unlock by just playing a lot. The only one that is based on luck is “Geddowned!” since in order to do it, you have to use it right when the enemy uses an attack, and you don’t have enough time to see which attack he is using first. You just have to hope that he is using the monster attack.

The Achievement List is:

  • Hard to Crack – Finish first in a round of Battle Royale with the shield still intact.
  • To Cool for School – Give Ralph a big owie.
  • King of Comedy – Respawn into a missile and die.
  • Brawny – Finish first in a complete Multiplayer match of at least 3 rounds of Battle Royale.
  • Geddowned! – Use a Wormhole Disrupt to block a foe’s Monster Attack within a second of it launching at you.
  • Wait for it – Use a Missile Boost on an attack less than one second before it’s hit by an Anti-Missile.
  • Try Anything Twice – Reflect the same missile twice.
  • Duelist – Defeat a total of 100 foes in Multiplayer.
  • Meet Your Maker – Defeat a total of 50 Hard Bots when playing as the Robot Factory.
  • Even-Steven – Defeat a total of 50 opponents after you have been killed.
  • Rest in Pieces – Accumulate 150 Dead Puzzler’s points ten times, in Multiplayer Battle Royales.
  • Puritan – Clear the final level of Poison Peril.

Overview
Although the online community is already dead, you can still play against bots and have fun by yourself. Puzzlegeddon combines two pretty simple gameplay mechanics and combines them into a flurry of fun. I give Puzzlegeddon 7 capsules out of 10.

7-0-capsules-out-of-10

Pros

  • Game Mechanics that anyone (except the colorblind) can pick up an enjoy.
  • Bots to play against for people without Xbox Live.
  • A very big list of custom game options, for endless game possibilities.

Cons

  • Based entirely on different color blocks, it may be hard for colorblind people to play.
  • A dead online community.
  • The bots have a tendency to focus on you mostly, making larger games feel one sided.

Fret Nice – Xbox Live Arcade Review

Fret Nice
Publisher: Tecmo
Developer: Pieces Intertainment
Platforms: Xbox 360
Release Date: February 24th, 2010

Story
Fret Nice is a 2-D platformer that will rock your world. Control your character through funky-fresh stages to explore hidden areas, collect items, and clash note-for-note with outrageous heavy metal bosses! Rock out by blasting enemies with riff combos and creating your own sounds with each “strum” of a chord! Every playthrough offers an ever-changing sonic adventure.” [Via Xbox.com]

The story is about a band called “Vibrant Chordblast” becoming the best band in the world, but a group of bad guys from Heavy Metal Island dislike the music. They wreak havoc on the world, and you as the hero must use your musical abilities to defeat these creatures and save the world.

You traverse through many levels defeating these monsters and bosses. Newspaper articles through the game reveal a bit more of the story, but not that much. If you skip all of the newspapers you won’t be missing anything big.

Gameplay
Fret Nice is pretty straight forward, but the gameplay mechanics are extremely complicated. The gameplay mechanics are so complicated in fact that they take away from the overall experience of the game. You can either play using a guitar controller, or a normal controller. If you want the most fun out of the game I’d suggest to just sticking with a normal controller, but if you are all at a party and want to have a good laugh use guitar controllers and play co-op. Have a competition to see who can stay alive the longest, or who can do better with the guitar as the controller.

The game comprises of 2 different control setups depending on which controller you use.

Guitar Controller – Strum makes you strum within in the game, in mid air it will count as a strum, while on the ground it will either let you run or climb. Tilting makes you jump.  Frets count as different sound keys for killing monsters while you are in midair. The green and yellow frets move you left and right. The whammy bar lets you soar through the air. You can also strum to use your helicopter power up, and hold strum down to use fire boots. Whammy bar lets you fly with a jet pack. Finally the orange fret lets you use bubble gum, as you can see these controls become extremely complicated when trying to kill enemies.

Controller – The controller controls are much easier, and let you focus more on enjoying the game over trying to use the right controls. A lets you jump, and pressing A repeatedly in the air lets you soar. Tapping X lets you run and climb and you can move with the joystick. Finally the left & right triggers, the left & right bumpers and Y are the notes you can play. As you can see the controller leads to much fewer complications.

The objective is to play notes based on the enemy’s features. First you have to jump into the air and the first note type you play will be the eyes, then the next note type will be the horns, then the next note type will be the mouths, and finally the next not type will by the bandage. By combining notes, you must build up the features on your copy of the monster to destroy the monster. Gain the maximum amount of points by playing the least amount of notes.

This may seem pretty straight forward but it becomes extremely complicated when you use the guitar controller. Since 3 out of the 5 frets are also used as other things, it is hard to tilt the guitar to jump, then strum and fret a certain combination. On top of all this, whenever you use the green or yellow fret button, you will move left or right. Moving while trying to kill an enemy makes killing an enemy extremely difficult.

There are a few nice features within the game. There is a huge focus on customization, which lets you unlock new clothes to purchase as your progress through the game. There is also local co-op so you can play the game with a friend. Sadly the co-op is only local, and it would’ve been nice to have Xbox live support in this area.

Audio
The game is an Action game with a focus on audio. You are able to use a guitar to play, so I would hope the audio would be able to back it up. The game does not disappoint in this field, the main menu song alone is extremely catchy.

As well as the soundtrack being good, whenever you strum (or hit a button) to kill an enemy, the strumming noise matches the current tone of the music being played. This integration enables the game to give you sound effects without taking away from the overall music.

Achievements
Fret Nice has some pretty complicated controls, running through the game using the guitar is going to be pretty hard, let alone getting every medal. Every level consists of 10 medals and they are no easy task. Not to mention Hard mode, but even that is easier then getting all the medals in the game. If you play a game solely for the achievements, this is not the game for you!

The Achievement List is:

  • Ready to Rock – Clear the first level.
  • Stabilized – Get all medals in any level.
  • Friendly – Collect a relic with your Avatar.
  • All Powered Up – Have all 4 power-ups at the same time.
  • The Per Lundberg syndrome – Get 100% of all medals.
  • Hard as Rock – Complete the game on hard difficulty.
  • Ambitiously Ambidextrous – Clear at least 3 levels with all 3 controller types.
  • Bubbler of the Week – Get 10 enemies within the same bubble.
  • Skull and Crushed bones – Crush 10 skulls without touching the ground.
  • Given to Wail – Clear all levels using a guitar.
  • Fire Walker – Defeat 100 enemies using the Fire Boots.
  • Incognito – In single player, clear each standard level collecting less than 20 points.
  • Secret – This is a secret achievement. (Sorry, I’m not revealing the secret achievement to you guys; play the game to find out what it is)

Overview
Fret Nice is a unique experience, but so much is put into trying to make it unique that it loses some of the fun value. Fret Nice could have been so much more but it falls behind due to these complicated gameplay mechanics. If you want to have more fun in this game, I’d suggest to just sticking with the controller. The guitar experience is nice, but it is lacking and doesn’t feel as smooth as it should have been. Fret Nice is a unique experience but the gameplay could have used some polishing up, I give Fret Nice 6 Capsules out of 10.

6-0-capsules-out-of-10

Pros

  • Local Co-op, grab a friend and play together.
  • Major customization, use money you have collected through the game to buy more stuff for your person.
  • Guitar support, now you have something else to use your guitar for rather than just Rock Band or Guitar hero.
  • Leaderboards, can you beat your friend’s best time and score?

Cons

  • The game has spent so much trying to feel unique, that it has become less fun.
  • The guitar controls are excessively complicated, and jumping by tilting is a pain.
  • The game becomes repetitive and leads to a bunch of random button mashing.

7

A boycott has started it has accumulated 1120 signatures and still rising.

Lets up the ante’ folks! lets buy every single sega product on the release day of Sonic the Hedgehog 4. That’ll show those pesky Sega Developers 😉
