Make-A-Wish and PopCap create a 9 year old iOS developer

Nothing is better than when a 9 year old boy who has leukemia can have his dreams fulfilled.  Luckily, PopCap and the Make-A-Wish Foundation exist to make such dreams come true.  They have helped one little Mr. Owain Weinert  be a proud creator of a real time strategy game called Allied Star Police.  This game is set to be a hit on the iPad and iPhone when it releases later this year.  When purchased, the profits from the game will go towards the Make-A-Wish Foundation.  Watch the video below to see the party that PopCap threw for the fledgling video game developer and his friends.

MX vs ATV Alive trailer focuses on… DLC

The new MX vs. ATV game is featured in a new trailer from THQ, and it does look pretty sssiiiiick.

See what I did there?  Making “sick” elongated so that it relates to the sport of motocross racing?  Yea, you see.  😉

But besides that, the game will hopefully be pretty good and reinvent the franchise.  If this video is any indication,  micro- transactions  in the game will be implemented and if the customization options and DLC options are as extensive as those featured in the trailer, that could be pretty innovative.  Although 240 Microsoft Points for a costume seems quite, um, expensive.

Will Fruit Ninja come to the Kinect?

The addictive, sweet, juicy mobile game Fruit Ninja is rumored to be released for the Xbox 360 Kinect soon.  According to Korea’s Game Rating Board, the game will be called Fruit Ninja Kinect.  Much like the original, this game will presumably have us all dicing virtual kiwis, mangoes and bananas.

Although latency may be a slight issue, there is no reason to fear that this game will be none other than awesome, as ninjas and fruit are always great, right?

If you just can’t wait though, get the game on Windows Phone 7, iPhone or Android marketplaces.

Video games at Redbox will go nationwide on June 17, 2011

Automated movie and Blu-ray rental chain Redbox will be putting video games into their kiosks in 21,000 out of 27,000 locations in the USA starting on June 17.  Although this program has been in beta for the better part of 2 years, the locations involved in the test only covered 5,000 of the rental locations.  According to the press release, “Redbox has rented more than one million video games in less than two years at these locations, underscoring the popularity of video game play in America.”

Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii video games will be available for $2 a day.  Most of the time, Redbox focuses on new releases in the media industry.  As is Redbox policy, there are no late fines, but after a predetermined amount of time, your credit card will stop being charged and the game will be yours. For example, DVD rentals cost $1/day and after 24 days, the DVD is yours.

Blockbuster game rentals are priced at $8.99 for a 5 day week and Gamefly  runs $15.95 – $29.95 for 1-3 games out at a time.

I can’t wait for this and I hope that all areas will be served soon, especially rural ones.

GLaDOS in LEGO form is terrifyingly kiddy and awesome

One gamer who loves his toys as much as he likes video games combined his passions by creating a Lego version of GLaDOS.

According to the pictures and description though, SOMEONE else created this amazingly cool monstrosity.  Check it out:

“Oh, it’s you. It’s been a long time. How have you been? I’ve been really busy being constructed of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. You know, after you murdered me?

Fortunately the Aperture Science Emergency Recreational Building Element Reconstruction Initiative has provided me with a new body. Consequently, testing can recommence immediately.”

Rival Turf Arrives on the Virtual Console…

It is a pretty slow news day as far as Nintendo’s digital releases go, but for fans of arcadey beat-em ups, Rival Turf has now arrived on the Virtual Console. Now before you go off and judge this title on it’s awful cover art (which yes, it certainly is a contender for our bad boxarts column), from what I remember, I enjoyed this game for the most part as it reeks of memories of backwards jeans and graffiti covered wooden fences.

Players take control of Jack Flack or Oozie Nelson as they…well, I don’t really remember the plot quite honestly, but beat-em ups like this don’t really need a story and are sheerly to remind us of the many Streets of Rage clones we seen in the 90’s. Of course this game can be purchased for the standard 800 point price tag and Rival Turf is available as of today, so go get it or these thugs will come to your house and rip the tag right off your mattress. Be afraid.

Microsoft Studios Kinect Shooter

Those gamers who have been dreaming and hoping for a shooter on Kinect should keep a close eye on Microsofts Vancouver Studios over the next upcoming months. Art Director and Senior Artist for Zipline Studios, a division of Microsoft, has stated via his blog “…our studio strategy has changed and now focuses on delivering a core AAA shooter experience using the Kinect”. Microsoft Vancouver Studios original purpose was to create “social microtransaction games”, with a move more towards pushing the limits of the technology available on the Xbox 360 and through the Kinect peripheral. The Studio has also announced future projects across Xbox 360, LIVE and Kinect, with an emphasis on experimental gameplay. Personally I’m looking forward to being able to hide behind the couch with the cat, peering around the corner to take out an enemy. Im not sure how the concept will work so keep an eye out for future releases.

Sony Online Entertainment intrusion steals 12,700 older credit cards, servers shut down until further notice

Earlier today we reported that Sony Online Entertainment had shut down their servers in response to an intrusion into their system. A few hours after Station.com went down Sony has now released a statement about the actual intrusion and it seems that things can only get worse for the company. After the recent intrusion Sony has stated that they have lost 12,700 credit card numbers due to this attack and the servers were taken offline because of this.

Nikkei of Japan reports that Sony first learned of the attack last night and that 4,300 of the credit card numbers were originally from Japan but the rest of them could be from anyone around the world. There is no exact information yet as to whether this hacking is connected to the recent problems associated with the PlayStation Network hacking, but news is not good for Sony. Expect an official announcement with more information from Sony soon.

Catherine “Love is Over” Deluxe Edition is a deluxe bundle beyond imagination

A game like Catherine deserves a special edition and fans probably were expecting something to be in the cards at Atlus headquarters. Of course fans may not have been expecting them to double down either. They announced today that Catherine will indeed be getting a special edition release but this one will contain more than a handful of special features you won’t be able to get anywhere else.

Titled the Love is Over Deluxe Edition it will contain everything a fan eagerly anticipating the release of Catherine in the U.S. could want. The entire package will be delivered in a Stray Sheep pizza delivery box straight from the game itself. The contents of the box will include the Xbox 360 or PS3 version of the game you purchased as well as a Catherine Pillowcase, a large shirt such as the one she wears in the game and a pair of Vincent’s boxers similar to the ones worn in the game.

The package will sell for $79.99 which places it at only $20 more than the standard $59.99 price that Catherine will sell for on July 26th when it releases to stores. Then again you should probably pre-order this Deluxe Edition because it is going to be of limited quantity. Also if you happen to pre-order the title you will also recieve an 11-track music CD as well as a 36 page Catherine art book similar to what you would always get from a premium edition.
