Ninja Gaiden 3 hands-on impressions at E3

At E3 while we were taking a tour of the Tecmo KOEI booth we were given the opportunity to gain access to the title in the back room of the booth alongside Team Ninja’s director Yosuke Hayashi and Peter Garza who helped translate our questions and the answers from Mr. Hayashi.

We jumped right into the action of Ninja Gaiden 3, which began on the roof of a building above the London streets. Ryu didn’t stay on the building very long however as I jumped off from the top of the building and glided down onto the ground right behind an enemy soldier. The enemy was easily dispatched through a few quick slashes of Ryu’s sword.

Right away we could tell that Ninja Gaiden 3 has retained its visceral gameplay as enemies were killed in sprays of blood and visually impressive finishing moves. Mr. Hayashi explained that the team has been working hard at making it feel like you are actually fighting against real human soldiers, they have done this by making it so enemies can react to your actions in a more realistic way.

Enemy soldiers can be knocked down, not quite killed but bleeding out and suffering. These enemies can be either left to die, crying in a pool of their own blood or can be given mercy in the same way that a samurai who had committed seppuku would be given mercy in the form of kaishaku, which means decapitation. All of these implementations help make it feel like what Ryu is doing by killing all of these soldiers is a very negative thing to be doing.

This culminates in the fact that thin red streams appear from killed enemies and are absorbed by Ryu’s right arm. The arm appears to be infected with some curse or another, though Mr. Hayashi would not go into detail as to how Ryu came upon this curse. Once enough of these streams have been collected Ryu’s arm will begin to glow red and this means that Ryu will be able to perform his ultimate technique. He appears to split into multiple copies of himself and attacks each enemy in the vicinity in deadly fashion, though in fact it is his enhanced speed making the enemies believe he split into copies of himself, either killing them instantly or severely wounding them. After killing enemies Ryu also regains small portions of his health as he absorbs their life force into his own.

Not all enemies will be your standard grunt however, some of what we were shown included those who carried rocket launchers and riot shields to help throw a bit of spice into the standard gameplay. Ninja Gaiden 3’s combat also has the inclusion of some quick time events that will allow the player to perform brutal finishing moves to enemies at a touch of the button.

We were assured by Mr. Hayashi that these quick time events would not be a central part of the game and would only be shown during the demo, afterwords these quick time looking events would disappear and would simply be from the memory of the player.

After fighting our way through countless enemy soldiers we stuck facing down a giant metal war machine that had six different legs and plenty of weaponry on board which were all directed towards Ryu. The monstrous machine nearly managed to defeat us but through finding its weak point we found it easy to defeat and finish off the demo. We said our thanks to Mr. Hayashi and Peter and MasterAbbott got himself a picture with the two to commemorate the event.

Assassin’s Creed: Revelations E3 impressions

Ubisoft had plenty to show off at E3 this year, but nothing was more impressive than seeing Assassin’s Creed: Revelations first hand during a behind the booth demonstration of the game’s single player story. We were given a video demonstration and run down of the demo by Aldo Sampaio from Ubisoft. We join a much older looking Ezio in the city of Constantinople. He must make his way to a boat out on the ocean but unfortunately the Ottoman Empire has raised a giant chain across the mouth of the port.

The chain is designed to prevent any and all ships from entering or leaving the harbor which means Ezio has to do something about the chain or he has no chance of escaping from Constantinople alive. Of course while other assassins may have been daunted by the task of sneaking into a well-guarded area and destroying the chain, this is Ezio we are talking about.

As Aldo made his way over to his destination we were introduced to a new game mechanic that allows Ezio to use bombs throughout the world. These bombs are entirely customizable and can be created through finding items around the city. This means that all of those random items you picked up in Brotherhood may have a use this time around instead of just store quests. The bombs can be used for any number of things, but are best used to wipe out entire groups of guards.

After using one of these new bombs to take out four guards at once, Aldo guided Ezio up towards the tower holding the chain, but not before showing us that the Eagle Sense has been upgraded slightly and will be clearer than ever when you are using it, even when in the midst of your own smokebombs.

After eliminating all the guards in the area and using a custom bomb that he was given through the opening cutscene he destroys the entire building holding the chain and opens up his escape route. But the problem is that the boat he was supposed to be on has already sailed. Too bad this won’t be an issue either because Ezio now has a hookblade that can be used to zip across ropes like a zip line and also extend his climbing reach making it easier to navigate than ever before.

The hookblade can also be used as a weapon and this was demonstrated after Ezio used it to zipline over to an enemy ship. The enemy ship, once cleaned of enemies, contained a cannon that shoots Greek Fire, (ancient flamethrower) that allowed him to quite literally set ablaze every other ship in the harbor. Thus with all of the enemy fleet burning down into the ocean, Ezio was able to make a quick escape through the wreckage and onto the allied ship before the demo had finished.

The gameplay and combat look to be quite similar to what we saw in Brotherhood except with a few new touches here and there. The hookblade is certainly a nice addition as it will most likely make getting around the city faster, but perhaps the biggest implementation here was the bomb system. The bombs look like they will be a mechanic that fans will love, as each one can be customized to perform specific actions. The one shown in the demo launched splinters of wood into the area, killing all guards nearby. Now bombs may not be the sneakiest way to infiltrate an area, but they certainly are effective. We can’t wait to see more when the title releases later this year in November.

NEW Old Republic Trailer released at E3 2011

As if people couldn’t get more psyched for this game as they already are. During the EA press event of E3 2011, gamers watching worldwide were offered yet another piece of Star Wars based MMORPG goodness. The trailer for Bioware’s entry into the MMO market has captivated the attention of fans and media outlets alike. While obviously the pre-rendered cinematics don’t truly display the gameplay expeirence, if it’s job was to create hype and excitement, then it has most certainly been achieved.

When EA’s representative stood aside to allow the individual developers to flaunt their stuff, it was pretty obvious that Old Republic was going to be somewhere in the lineup. When the Star Wars theme began playing, the Bioware representative Dr Greg Zeschuk walked out to a round of audience applause. Bioware has had huge success with RPG series in the past, but they clearly wanted to treat something as big and expansive as Star Wars in a unique way. As he said, Bioware has not yet attempted something this big, not even with the Mass Effect series. The task required “an army of artists, engineers, designers and producers”. Those fortunate enough to be present at E3 were promised a chance to engage with and view the myraids of new content, including Raids, new planets and environments, game types, and of course, core gameplay itself.

“Just play it. Get lost in it. Live in it.”

Well, why not? It’s what Bioware RPG’s are famous for. 🙂

The trailer itself opens with a monologue of the typical kind of “peace descending into chaos” storyline that is characteristic the Star Wars universe. But it doesn’t take long for the action to kick in. 300 years following the events of the Knights of the Old Republic seriess, the Sith have returned from their millenia long exile to punish the Jedi and the Republic for their actions in the great Hyperspace war. Re-claiming the anicent Sith World of Korriban is no doubt the first step. With the Galaxy thrown into the chaos of war, players are invited to choose sides in this eternal conflict. (Naturally for Star Wars.) Will you aid the light side in prevailing against the Sith? Or will the draw of the Dark side push you to destroy the Republic?

However, it should also be mentioned that at the same time, a second cinematic trailer was also released on the internet. Part of the cinematics for this trailer made up the Old Republic press event feature. It must be said that what was displayed in what is being called the “opening” trailer has most certainly tickled my fancy. The trailer itslef opens with a a small group of people on a Space station discussing what to do with a smuggler they found attempting to steal Sith artifacts from Korriban. Suddenly, several Sith dreadnoughts drop out of Hyperspace, and a battle ensues. In the hero party, we get to see each of the 4 light side character roles at work, inclduing:

  • the Soldier, acting as the heavy weapons specialist in a stormtrooper like uniform. The militaristic character type.
  • the Smuggler, the cheeky rogue with an aptitude for both piloting and light gunplay. Clearly appealing to those wishing to follow a Han Solo or Malcom Reynolds type of character.
  • the Jedi Guardian, an up-front weapons specialist that excels in Lightsaber combat. For those that want to emulate the path of Luke Skywalker.
  • the Jedi Consular, the party member with the strongest force affliation. For those who believe their game would be best suited to playing like Yoda.

Additionally 2 of the Empire classes are shown:

  • the Sith Warrior, the Empire’s equivalent of the Jedi Guardian. A brutal, up-front brawler with an affinity for the blade. The Darht Vader character type.
  • the Sith Inquisitor, who are masters of Dark Side powers. Well suited for the player who want to emulate the Emperor’s role.

This extended opening trailer is posted below.

The event presentation of the trailer  however didn’t teally display anything new to the media. The CG effects and cinematics were combinations of previous trailers wound together, but with the accompanying voice overs and musical score made them feel all the more epic. While obviously restricted by time limitations in the presentation, some more in depth details of new game features or even a release date would have been welcomed. Regardless however, the hype has been created. And I for one cannot wait until it’s released. And fingers crossed it can even give WoW a run for it’s money in the MMO market. I’m extremely hopeful for its success.

May the Force be with you, Bioware.

Defiance, first ever interconnected MMO on PC, Xbox360, Playstation 3 and television

TrionWorlds and Syfy Channel have recently put together a kind of collaboration in the form of a shooter MMO and television show. The project is to appear on all current HD systems (no word on Wii U yet though) which means that it could have cross platform play between them. The project is also to appear as a TV show, I’m assuming that players in the game influences what happens on the TV show.

The project is in capable hands as the company handling the gameplay are the same company that developed the popular MMORPG Rift, so we at least know that the gameplay portions of the project will work well. The part that has my concern though, is the television part of the project. What happens if it doesn’t get viewers? Will it have it’s own story separate to the game? While I doubt either of those could happen, there is a slight possibility.

Lastly I have to point out that it would incredibly awesome to have my actions in a video game influence the events of a TV show, I think that this game will be very popular based on that fact alone.

Modern Warfare 3 Timeline Presentation at E3 2011

This year at Activision’s booth, all eyes were on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. As the final title in the Modern Warfare series, the game is sure to have a following of both veteran COD fans and new players who want to finally try their hands at one of the most popular FPS of our time.

Modern Warfare 3’s campaign stages are set all around the world after Russia has begun invading the US, and Activision obviously wanted to give both new and old COD fans a little refresher on the plot up to this point. Logically, the best time to do this is at their booth at E3 2011…and they most certainly delivered. Activision provided gamers with a timeline presentation of the Modern Warfare plot up until this point.

The presentation showcases the different locations from around the world that players will be fighting in. It begins with a Manhattan skyline rife with destruction and chaos, before flashing to England, France, and Germany’s equally devastating circumstances. The presentation was actually a great reminder of the series, and means all of us will be waiting with even more anticipation for Activision’s latest COD game. Have a peek at the presentation below.

Modern Warfare 3 is scheduled for release on November 8, 2011.

One Piece Collection 9 Review

One Piece Collection 9
Tag Line: Deadly Desert Showdown!
Produced by:
Toei Animation
Run time: 325 minutes in 13 episodes
Language: English, Japanese
Genre: Action, Adventure, Shounen, Comedy
Available for purchase at Madman Online Store ($49.95)

Overview:
One Piece is the name of the treasure that will grant the person to find it the title King of the Pirates. But there is more to the name of this series than that. Underneath all of it, everyone is searching for one piece. Whether it be the treasure itself or there own dream. One Piece is more than just a treasure at the end of the grand line. One Piece is the world, and everyone wants a piece of it. Everyone wants something and it’s out there waiting for them, everyone has their place and their piece. This is what this anime embodies, heart and soul.

This particular collection of One Piece takes place during the Alabasta arc as did the previous collection I reviewed. This collection details the revelation of Crocodiles plans and the Straw-Hats going to battle to stop Baroque Works from taking control of the country and causing the deaths of millions. However that is just on the surface. This collection is about one thing: The struggle to protect and fight for what is your one piece.

One Piece is dreams, one piece is hope, one piece is a place where you belong, one piece is resolute. That is what this fight is about. But who will get their piece of the world? Whose piece is it?

Story:
The story of this collection follows the continued campaign of the Straw-Hats in Alabasta Kingdom. All the pieces fall into place and the war is on between the Rebels and the Royals not so far a reflection from the Rebellious Straw-Hats and the aspiring Royals Baroque Works also in the heat of battle.

We have some amazing plot development here which doesn’t for one second drag or linger, it is too busy masterfully weaving this epic tale to stop. With moments such as Usopp’s speech and Sanji’s clever game of deceit with Crocodile, this is an unforgettable collection of the series.

The stand-out moment was Usopp’s speech about dreams. That one moment justifies Usopp’s place in the Straw-Hat pirates and solidifies what this series is all about. He is near death, but will not stand for his Captains dreams to be mocked. Because really who has the right to mock anyone’s dreams? To the characters of One Piece, you are your dream. Making light of that, is cardinal sin.

The collection ends with a promise of more fights to come and the conclusion to this grand story arc, with Crocodile appearing from a haze of sand to prevent Vivi from destroying her own Palace (which she believes would lead the Rebels to believe they have won and thus end this pointless war).

Characters:
The colourful cast of characters were all on their A game this collection. We had brilliant moments from Usopp, Sanji, Luffy and even Chopper. Not to say the others didn’t have their moments but I think as we dive into their battles next collection we will see them shine brighter.

Luffy finally had his encounter with Crocodile in the middle of the Sandora desert in which he finally met his match. Luffy does all he can, but alas nothing can take down this sandman and Luffy falls. But after help from an unexpected savior, will he be able to make it in time to help stop this war? I’m certain he will, but that will have to wait until next collection.

Overall their was great character development all around, I am tempted to talk more about Usopp and his speech but it is best you watch it yourself for it to have the same effect.

Artwork:
The art and animation was superb this collection, with the battles all wonderfully animated and the explosion effects were indeed a sight to behold.  I am a big fan of fluid animation and this collection’s fights had plenty of it, whether it be Luffy vs. Crocodile or the flurry of kicks between Sanji and Mr. 2, there was some great animation work all around.

Audio:
What a great collection for the audio department. We have amazing voice work, particularly stand-out work from Sonny Strait as Usopp and Eric Vale as Sanji. Both of whom absolutely pulled out all the stops. I’ll say this once more, please get this collection just to see Sonny Strait deliver Usopp’s speech. I even heard that the Japanese voice actor praised Strait for that one.

The music was brilliant as well, with a new opening theme in the last episode, Hikari E, sung by the great Vic Mignogna here, who does a great job with the song originally in japanese by The Babystars.

We also say goodbye to the previous opening theme, Believe. It had a good run and was the theme of several great arcs. But moving forward Hikari E is a good replacement.

Special Features:
We got a great release from Madman here, with a reversible cover-art of the Straw-Hats and Baroque Works, a great episode 114 commentary with Sonny Strait (Usopp) and Wendy Powell (Miss Merry Christmas) and Jason Grundy (ADR Director) as well as Madman’s usual trailers and textless opening and endings.

The commentary itself is particularly humorous as both voice actors comment on how all the voices for this series are voice killers. We also get some detail upon how they went about dubbing the series itself and in particular this episode.

Conclusion:
One Piece is a series where the name says it all, but in the most subtle way possible. It’s all done so masterfully, that I am convinced that Eiichiro Oda (the creator) is a genius. If you are looking for adventure, action, emotion or a series that will resonate with you. This is the series you should be watching.  There is so much to see here, it is crazy.

There isn’t a single bad thing about this collection of One Piece, it caused me to feel so many emotions and really think deeply about both the series and my own life. It’s that extra level of depth and resonance that makes One Piece a modern day classic.

I give this piece of One Piece:

Wii U currently only allows 1 new controller says Miyamoto

Miyamoto recently confirmed in an interview with news.com.au that the Nintendo’s new console, Wii U, will currently be limited to only allowing 1 new Wii U controller interfacing with the console, alongside 4 previous gen Wii controllers.

As Miyamoto says, this is only at the current stage in Wii U’s development. However there isn’t any clarity over whether this will change by release date. If this doesn’t change it could perhaps be the stray bullet to take down the hype juggernaut Nintendo has created over the past week from their E3 2011 announcement.

Only time will be able to tell whether the console will allow for multiple new controllers instead of relying on the older generation controllers. This is a new generation for Nintendo after-all and I for one will have my fingers crossed that they correct this misstep.

Brighton Rock coming soon to DVD and Blu-Ray

Helen Mirren seems to be every man’s “older woman” crush, and this new film Brighton Rock is yet another perfect excuse for all the guys out there to check out the dame yet again.

Helen Mirren…you’ve done it again.

Brighton Rock is an adaptation of Graham Greene’s novel of the same title. The film is set in Brighton in 1964, when a young gangster, Pinkie Brown, comes to tries to ‘claim’ the town. However, one of his rivalries turns into violence and a waitress, Rose, holds the evidence to enable Pinkie to be sentenced to death. In his own efforts to keep her quiet, he tries to romance her but Rose’s employer Ida (or as we like to know her, Helen Mirren) begins to become suspicious of Pinkie’s motives.

The film is available on DVD and Blu-ray on the 17th August, 2011. Check out more information about it at the Madman website here.
