Nippon Ichi CEO On Disgaea 3 Returns & Interest in PSP Remaster

Earlier today, I reported that Disgaea 3 is heading to the Playstation Vita as Disgaea 3 Returns. It seems that there is more information since then.

Denegki Playstation interviewed Nippon Ichi CEO Sohei Niikawa and he revealed some new information in addition to reiterate the info which was included in the announcement (thanks to Andriasang). Here is a summary of the interview:

• He hopes that they will be able to present a playable demo at this year’s Tokyo Game Show next month. That would be exciting.

• Niikawa wants to implement positional information and touch capabilities, both possible on the handheld. This could lead to creative gameplay mechanics (i.e. picking up and throwing prinnies).

• Disgaea 3 Returns may have their own downloadable content in addition to the PS3 DLC already added to the game (and that’s all of the PS3 DLC).

• Visuals will not get an upgrade due to a focus on cramming in content. However, he has reassured gamers that the Vita version will still look beautiful.

• There is a possibility that the Vita version will load faster due to the handheld’s “advance capabilities and better memory management”.

• Disgaea 3 Returns may also be an experiment as Niikawa and his software company will observe the response to the game as an indicator in terms of what to develop for the Vita.

Niikawa also revealed in a separate interview with Siliconera that the company is looking into the PSP Remaster series:

“We’re looking into it right now. We’re investigating how the feature works and learning about the system. We’re happy about it too because we have a strong lineup on the PSP and we would like to change that to PS3, so we can have a wider audience.”

The PSP Remaster series is an initiative by Sony Japan to bring PSP exclusive games to the Playstation 3. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD Version will be the first of such games, which will feature cross-platform features such as shared save games and connectivity with players of both versions, as well as 3D and additional content. SCEA will be releasing God of War: Origins Collection, PS3 remakes of the God of War PSP games, while Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker will be re-released by Konami as part of their Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection. However, the collection will be available on both the PS3 and Xbox 360.

NSW Attorney General Backs R18+ Classification For Video Games

2

Back in July, the state Attorney – Generals agreed in principle a R18+ classification for video games as they become a more prominent form of entertainment. However, the New South Wales Attorney General Greg Smith abstained from the meeting, despite the general attitude within the NSW Cabinet being positive to the idea.

Today signals the official backing of all Attorney – Generals in principle as Greg Smith announced that the state of NSW will agree to the R18+ rating.

Mr Smith had this to say in a statement published on the ABC website. I should point out that his reasoning to back the measure actually makes complete sense:

Few people would dispute the value of a classification system that helps keep adult material beyond the reach of children.

With strong classification guidelines in place, an R18+ rating should result in violent games currently rated MA15+ in Australia being reclassified as adults-only, as they already are in many other countries.

So what is next? The state AGs will now discuss the guidelines and draw up a draft that will be sensible and effective. That will happen at the next SCAG meeting. It is expected that these draft guidelines will be based on the MA15+ rating but more restrictive so that games rated for adults only overseas will be rated the same here. It will also be possible that some games, like Left For Dead 2 (uncut) and more recently Mortal Kombat, may be re-submitted once the Commonwealth introduces the rating. Just don’t expect to know the details until the AGs finalise them.

THQ closes two studios, halts MX vs ATV

THQ has today announced a major shakeup of its development teams, closing two studios in Australia and getting rid of one Phoenix based development team, leaving 200 people out of work.

Melbourne based Blue Tongue Entertainment and Brisbane’s THQ Studio Australia were both shut down with immediate effect. Neither studio’s website hints at any prior problem, with Studio Australia’s site currently under reconstruction as part of the “change, innovation and creative growth of THQ Inc.”

The restructure is intended to shift resources to “high quality owned IP”, with THQ intending to focus on their own high end titles such as Saints Row and Darksiders rather than movie tie ins and games licensed from kids TV shows. Blue Tongue Entertainment was best known for the cartoon style DeBlob series of games, and also worked on Nickelodeon licensed titles, as did Studio Australia.

The developer also announced that it will not be working on racing franchise MX vs. ATV in the near future.

The sudden loss of two studios adds to a bad day for the Australian games industry, already hit hard by rumours (now confirmed?)  that LA Noire developer Team Bondi has sold off all its assets to another Australian production studio following financial troubles.

5 Games That Shouldn’t Be Movies

We’re in a golden age of cinema at the moment… Ok, ok, I couldn’t even convince myself there. With non-stop samey franchises like Final Destination, Saw and Fast & Furious, and the endless stream of terrible movies based on old movies and TV shows, like Bewitched, Yogi Bear, The Smurfs and Alvin & the Chipmunks, Hollywood are running out of places to turn for inspiration. Inevitably, they’ve turned to our beloved games industry, picking up the film rights to some rather odd choices.

Since we all know how lazy Hollywood producers are, I’ve saved them the trouble of writing the stories for these upcoming game-films, as well as suggesting directors. No need to thank me, guys.

Space Invaders
Status: Film rights recently acquired
Genre: Sci-Fi Thriller
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Tagline: They came from space… to invade!
Synopsis:

Jonathan (Keanu Reeves) is a divorced father, trying to make ends meet after  leaving the army in protest. He struggles with his estranged ex-wife, who decides to take the kids and move to another city. As he hurries to the airport to say goodbye, strange pixelly spacecraft appear in the sky above him. As they begin a slow, jerky descent, Jonathan must overcome his objections to war, climb into a tank and blast his way through wave after wave of invaders.

Being a Shyamalan film, the ending contains a twist: the invaders will never stop their descent. The more Jonathan destroys, the faster they return.

Pac-Man
Status: Film rights purchased in 2008 for $200 million – I wish I was joking
Genre: Horror
Director: Wes Craven
Tagline: Wakka wakka wakka…
Synopsis:

Mr and Ms Pacman move into an old house in the city, to get closer to the specialists helping the couple battle their eating disorder. There, they are soon tormented by four flamboyantly-coloured ghosts who haunt the place, leaving trails of tasty dots around to tempt the Pacman couple. They try to control themselves, with help from their unorthodox therapist (played by Robin Williams), but soon learn of a mystical object that may turn their eating disorder into a weapon – the legendary, slightly-bigger-than-usual dot…

With Craven at the helm, expect a decent scary film, with moments of humour.

The Sims
Status: In Development, slated for a 2012 release (seriously)
Genre: Drama
Director:  Tim Burton
Tagline: Free Will is only a simulation
Synopsis:

Marcus (Johnny Depp, because he has to be in every Burton film) was a moderately successful businessman, with a bright future in his career and family. Suddenly everything begins to crumble, as Marcus makes several bad decisions and winds up sitting at home all the time, unemployed and alone. An epiphany hits when he realises he wasn’t in control of those decisions, and sets about to change his life.

He asks around the neighbourhood and realises the problem extends further than he thought: all through Sim City, people are wetting themselves, getting into fights or kissing strangers against their will. The neighbourhood attempt to fight back against a malevolent, all-powerful force that drives them to destroy their lives, or bricks them up in doorless rooms and lets them starve.

As Burton fans expect, The Sims film will be set in an unnecessarily dark and twisted atmosphere, and will star Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.

Angry Birds
Status:  Inevitable
Director: Michael Bay
Genre: War/Action
Tagline: Get a bird’s eye view of war
Synopsis:

Red is a simple bird with a simple life. Newly married, he couldn’t be happier as he works each day at his demolition business, while his wife stays home with the eggs. His brother Yellow often scolds him for not taking part in the ongoing war against the Pigs. But when Red’s own eggs are kidnapped as part of a terrorist plot and sold into prostitution, Red and Yellow assemble a rag-tag team of bird mercenaries to destroy the Pig menace for good – one flimsy wooden structure at a time.

Bay is known for thin stories and lots of action, so expect a non-stop splode-athon with this one.

Tetris
Status: Hopefully it won’t actually become a movie, but I wouldn’t be too surprised if some desperate studio buys the rights to it.
Director: Steven Spielberg
Genre: Teen comedy
Tagline: Sometimes fitting in is only 90 degrees away
Synopsis:

L-Shape is sick of not fitting in. While all the other teenagers are disappearing to all the cool lines, he and his friend T-Piece are always left sitting around after they leave. They try to form lines with just the two of them and see where everyone else disappears to, but they can’t line up properly. As they begin to blame each other for their exile, a fight ensues during a routine descent, and the two find themselves landing upside down. Suddenly included in a line, they disappear along with all the others, and soon find themselves living the high life.

Initially excited about their new friends, L-Shape and T-Piece begin to realise their own friendship is fraying, and after another argument, they stop talking to each other. It doesn’t take long before they realise that rotating 90 degrees has transformed them into people they don’t want to be. They stop fitting into the lines, and go back to spending quality time with each other, as outcasts, and true friends. Awww!

Spielberg knows how a Hollywood film works, meaning this will be a by-the-numbers family film with obvious lessons of friendship and being yourself.

Drakensang Online Opens its Beta

0

Browser based free-to-play MMORPG Drakensang-Online has recently come out of closed beta and into its open beta phase. This means that players will be able to play the beta version of the game before the game officially launches in the opcoming months.

Usually an open beta is a kind of stress test for servers, as well as an indication on interest of the game for developers so that they can find out the kind of equipment needed to maintain the game post launch. The game is very Diablo in its gameplay and runs incredibly well from within the web-browser.

The developers are incredibly excited to see their game reach an online audience –

“Drakensang’s going online!” rejoiced Bernd Beyreuther, Head of Development at Bigpoint Berlin “The launch of this game allows us to realize a long-held ambition of developing a fully immersive action RPG game that can be enjoyed by all players from the first moment of playing, and is brought alive by its large community. We have developed a rich story within the game and will be constantly tailoring and expanding the game based on user demands.”

The game (so far) has two selectable classes, one a mage-like Spellweaver, and the other being a warrior-like Dragonknight. There also appears to be a few other classes coming soon.

Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge secures USA Eagles license

Home Entertainment Suppliers has the landed the official license for the USA Eagles, the national rugby team for the USA, to appear in Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge.

Adding the USA Eagles to the growing roster of official licences will aid fans of the fastest growing sport in North America, to feel right at home alongside other Rugby Union fans from all over the World. It joins the other wealth of licensed teams to take the total to 93. It’s great to see the involvement of the USA Eagles, because although the sport is growing in North America, it still isn’t as big as in Europe and the Pacific and we don’t often see them in Rugby Union matches.

New Teaser for NHL 12 Emerges from the Ice…

Hockey fans everywhere will be able to celebrate very soon as EA are set to release NHL 12 on September 9th. Today, a new trailer was released by EA, promising that a certain “legend” will be revealed for the game on 8-11-11 (which is sometime later today for those keeping track). Considering that a pre-order is mentioned at the end of the trailer, I want to say this could be referencing a special DLC that will be announced for those who purchase the game ahead of time.

Other than that tease, you can still see a tiny bit of gameplay footage mixed into the trailer with the virtual crowd ready to watch these athletes take to the ice. Watch the new clip below and if anything is revealed later today, we will keep you updated.

Oh, Japan! – #1 The Sport of Kings

Oh, Japan! is a new weekly feature I am starting which will chronicle the wierd, wacky and just plain crazy goings on in Japan. Because we all know, Japan is prone to doing things that make us Westerners say “Oh, Japan!”.

This week for the first edition of Oh, Japan! we will be taking a look at a crazy video game from Japan known as JRA Japan World Tour. The game tasks you with placing a bet on a horse-race, you then watch the match and see if you bet right. Normal enough, right? Well let’s just say what lies within JRA Japan World Tour is far from normal.

Check it out in the video below and lets all simultaneously laugh, sigh and then exclaim “Oh, Japan!”.
