Overview
How we perceive and enjoy entertainment can vary depending upon who we are. By extension this means that all entertainment is subjective, what one may like another may not. Some go broad to gain a wider audience and appeal, others go in close and specific to a certain type of taste. Inu x Boku Secret Service is neither, it is a series that seemingly has no audience in mind yet at the same time manages to reach several specific audiences. For those particular audiences this series will be a roaring good time, for those outside of that niches it may come across as a mixed bag. Despite that, Inu x Boku Secret Service proves to be a compelling romantic comedy that doesn’t try to be too ambitious, instead opting for a more intimate style of fun and that suits it just fine.

Story
Make no mistake Inu x Boku Secret Service is an anime series targeted that has a unique appeal. It certainly makes for a great watch if you are into the romantic comedy spectrum of anime. On the flip side of that it can be difficult to get into if you aren’t into these types of anime. Regardless of that, there is still a bit of fun to be had if you are willing to give it a chance. At its core Inu x Boku Secret Service is pure wish fulfillment but it has enough heart to transcend its hokey pretenses.

The story focuses on Ririchiyo, the stuck-up rich girl epitomized  as she moves into a new apartment block that she believes to be exclusively for the elite of society. Of course things aren’t as they seem and the whole place turns out to be filled with some very bizarre demons including Secret Service agent Shoushi who vows to become Ririchiyo’s dog.

That in and of itself is a relatively elaborate set-up for a romantic comedy anime, but underneath that strange surface is some genuine emotion and even deeper meaning to all of this madness.

Ririchiyo is a misanthropic girl who tends to avoid others and forming friendships. When Shoushi comes into her life everything begins to change and soon enough she comes to the realization that she needs people in her life. She can’t go on being alone.

The central theme of Inu x Boku Secret Service is that people need eachother. It doesn’t exactly stick the landing on that, but it does manage to draw some interesting moments out of it. Ririchiyo and Soushi’s relationship is certainly an awkward one especially when taking into account the age of both characters, but it is evident that both characters need one another. Inu x Boku never really decides whether or not that need for eachother is a good thing or a bad thing but there is at the very least an unexpected sense of finality to the proceedings.

I feel that Inu x Boku has a very unique problem that it is afflicted with. It has many elements that appeal to many different audiences but it doesn’t ever commit enough to any of those elements to reach the potential each one has. All of this results in a rather scattershot anime series. It is a chaotic mixed bag that doesn’t exactly come together in the end, but it does provide an interesting take on take on the genre.

Visuals and Audio
David Production have crafted some excellent aesthetics with Inu x Boku Secret Service. While the locales don’t tend to be too impressive the characters are memorable. The series is beautifully animated with appealing art style and characters designs on show, making for a great visual experience. The Blu-Ray format serves to further accentuate the great art and animation of this series.

The series soundtrack is equally well composed, with a number of great tracks implemented. Interestingly enough Inu x Boku also features 6 ending themes alongside its single opening theme. Each track is well suited to the series and does a good job adding to the general atmosphere of the show.

This release also happens to feature an English dub alongside the original Japanese audio. Unfortunately the English dub falls far too much into the preverbial hokey valley with some poor casting decisions and lackluster performances in particular from Hilary Haag as Ririchiyo who fails to convey the vulnerability of the character instead focusing far too much on her posh tendencies with little to no nuance to the performance. This is of course disappointing, but to be expected for the often inconsistent casting efforts of Sentai Filmworks. Thankfully the original and admittedly brilliant Japanese audio is available with Rina Hidaka completely owning the role of Ririchiyo unlike her English counterpart.

Extras
Hanabee have done a great job with this release, having managed to include a fair amount of extras for viewers to sink their teeth into. Included on this Blu-Ray collection is the OVA episode as well as clean opening and endings. There is also a rather odd inconsistency in this release however. Hanabee having reproduced Sentai Filmworks Blu-Ray release have not removed instances of Sentai Filmworks name in the product, with a rather oddly placed ‘Also Available form Sentai Filmworks’ trailer section. It is a small yet nagging issue that can be bothersome to those who like consistency in their products. This is a great release though, regardless of that very minor issue.

inu-x-boku-2

Overall
Inu x Boku Secret Service is chaotic at the best of times and confusingly messy at the worst of times, but it is always weirdly entertaining. There is a true sense of fun that thrives on the chaos that comprises Inu x Boku Secret Service which makes for what is a surprisingly enjoyable anime series. It is far from perfect, it lacks the ambition to commit to any one element completely and it doesn’t seem to have a clue what it wants to be, but in spite of it all it turns out to be the one thing it had to be – crazy fun.

Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R Review

Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R
Developer: Arc System Works
Publisher: Arc System Works
Platforms: PlayStation Vita (Reviewed)
Release Date: April 23, 2013
Price: $14.99 – Available Here

Overview
The Guilty Gear franchise has had almost twenty releases on over a dozen platforms since the series first dropped back in 1998. Given the clout and history of such a long standing franchise, it should come as no surprise that PlayStation Vita owners would get a chance to jump into the fray and duke it out. The real question stands – is this game “Heaven Or Hell?” Let’s find out.

guilty-gear-xx-accent-core-plus-r-ss-01

Story
Storylines in fighting games are traditionally pretty terrible. While they’re nothing spectacular, the stories for each of the 25 fighters in Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R offer a fair bit of variety, even granting the player choice as they work through each fight to complete their arc. The overall theme is no more special than any other fighting game out there, but completing the stories will give you something to work toward and add replay value.

Gameplay
Like the subsequent BlazBlue games released after it, the Guilty Gear franchise has always been able to pride itself on its fast gameplay and sharp sense of control. With the recent Vita release, Accent Core Plus R still brings players the tight, responsive control fans of the franchise have become familiar with. The combat is also satisfyingly fast and as visceral as anything you’ll find on a console today.

The game boasts an impressive roster. Though a couple of the characters are re-skinned forms of fan favorites, all twenty-five have their own distinct combat styles and move sets. This gives each player a chance to dive into a character, latch on, and really take ownership like very few others can. Seeing each character unleash their moves and combos can be a genuinely impressive feat, regardless of the character.

guilty-gear-xx-accent-core-plus-r-ss-02

Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R boasts eight distinctly different play modes. Though players will definitely have their preferred play method, the option for variety is something that few fighting games put effort into. It’s refreshing to see so much available.

Of those game modes, players will experience the standard fare of the classic Arcade game mode, practice Training game mode, and the character-specific Story game mode. Those who just want to endlessly battle it out can jump in for some one-on-one action with the Vs. CPU and Team Vs. CPU game modes, the latter of which offers a 3-on-3 brawl to whittle away your opponent. Players who really want to test their mettle will likely want to dig into the game’s Survival and M.O.M. modes to see how long they can last. Finally, for a bit more variety with a reward, players can take on Mission mode, where you’ll complete specific tasks in return for special art and other things to view from the gallery.

guilty-gear-xx-accent-core-plus-r-ss-03

While the game brings a lot to the table in terms of gameplay modes and characters, it falls short in a few key areas. One of the first things players will notice upon firing the game up and jumping into a fight is that the game does not make full use of the Vita’s sizable screen. Cinematics and the like will show everything with the full screen, but once you’re in combat the sides of the screen will be filled with a logo, effectively stealing screen space and gimping your view.

While the controls for the game are precise and responsive, play periods of any significant length will manifest with pain in your hands after only a few minutes. This is no fault of the game, but its fast-paced, frantic nature will help reiterate that intense fighters were probably never meant to be played on something with controls so tightly packed together.

guilty-gear-xx-accent-core-plus-r-ss-04

Finally, and most significantly of all, Accent Core Plus R‘s online mode is completely impotent. One of the strongest aspects of any fighting game is its community, and players looking to hop online for a pickup match will be sorely disappointed with the Vita’s offering. The game supports ad hoc game play, but let’s be honest – very few Vita owners outside of Japan will ever even have the opportunity to test this out. This feels like a huge misstep from Arc System Works that could really damage the staying power of this game long-term.

Visuals and Audio
The visuals in Accent Core Plus R are every bit as excellent as they have been on any console release. Each character is rendered in beautiful, vibrant color and the animation is smooth as glass. Even though some space is lost due to the sidebars that are inserted to the screen, the game still looks just as fantastic and fluid as it did in the arcade or, for that matter, current generation console hardware.

guilty-gear-xx-accent-core-plus-r-ss-05

The series stays true to its roots with rock and roll tracks riffing throughout the carnage. Voice work is all done in Japanese, though subtitles can be changed through a variety of different languages including English, French, German, Spanish, and more. All of the audio is standard fare for the franchise and serves to give it an identity distinctly in-line with the rest of the Guilty Gear games.

Overall
Overall, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R is a great fighting game that’s marred by a few unfortunate design decisions. The game has fantastic action and beautiful visuals. The completely gimped network play will undoubtedly damage the staying power of the title as well. While gamers with an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 will likely just want to wait for the update coming to the console versions, fans of the franchise or folks looking for a good fighting game on the Vita will undoubtedly enjoy this game.

Metro: Last Light’s Anna Questions in Redemption Trailer

It seems that the latest trailer for Metro: Last Light goes to show that Anna, the best sniper in the Spartan Order of Rangers and daughter to current leader Miller, does not hold a very high opinion of Artyom. Which might not be too surprising for those that happened to check our Hands-On.

So, what does all this mean for the player? Well, more than likely the actions of Artyom will carry quite a bit of weight through the game, but what that means to the player will be up to them. If Artyom is indeed the last hope for humanity, will he pass it on or extinguish his light and everyone elses with it?

Players wanting to hear Anna’s words for themselves can watch the trailer embedded below, and those who wish to find out where Artyom’s actions will lead him can see for themselves when Metro: Last Light releases May 14th in North America and May 17th in Europe for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
