Another of the 15 Xbox One exclusive games has been revealed in the form of Harmonix Music Systems new game Fantasia: Music Evolved. Announced today by Disney Interactive, Fantasia: Music Evolved is a music based Kinect game inspired by Disney’s classic animated film Fantasia and is coming to both the Xbox One and the Xbox 360 in 2014.
Players enter the magical realms of Fantasia, selected by the legendary sorcerer Yen Sid to hone their musical and magical prowess as his new apprentice. Fantasia: Music Evolved takes players on an interactive and immersive motion-controlled journey through worlds of music and magic, unleashing their creativity along the way.
Fantasia: Music Evolved will feature tracks from over 25 leading artists, each featuring two unique remixes in addition to the original recording. The controller-free gameplay allows players to change the mix of the songs in real time by either changing between the original recordings of the song and new remixed versions or by adding new layers of music to change the song in surprising new ways. So far only a handful of songs and artists have been officialy announced. These include:
AVICII – “Levels”
Bruno Mars – “Locked Out Of Heaven”
Fun. – “Some Nights”
Kimbra – “Settle Down”
Queen – “Bohemian Rhapsody”
Definitely a strange mix of artists and genres there, and none of these songs seem to be anything similar to the classical music featured in the original Fantasia movie. It will be interesting to see how the world of Fantasia mixes in with the various styles of music. Stay tuned to Capsule Computers for more information on Fantasia: Music Evolved as it will be making an appearance on the show floor at E3 next week where new songs are slated to be revealed including some classical pieces that pay tribute to the film. Check out a trailer for the game below.

Mysterious Girlfriend X Studio: Hoods Entertainment Publisher:Sentai Filmworks Format:DVD, Blu-ray (Reviewed) Release Date: June 11, 2013 Price: $69.98 – Available Here
Overview Teenage romance is difficult to portray and often in anime this romance is taken to such an extreme that it is either devolves into a harem, relies on heavy fan-service or goes the omnibus route to create multiple endings. Every once in a while a romance story is created that features a great cast of characters or a unique twist that helps make the story worthwhile. As for Sentai Filmworks’ release of Mysterious Girlfriend X, this unique twist revolves around something unexplored in the industry so far. The question is, does this make the series worthwhile?
Story Akira Tsubaki is a rather average high school student. He isn’t a loner and has a number of male friends amongst his classmates but doesn’t stand out in any special way. However during his second year of high school a new girl named Mikoto Urabe transfers into the school and is seated next to him in class. To call Urabe strange would be an understatement as she barely introduces herself to the class, sleeps in-between classes, blows off any interactions with those trying to be friendly with her and hides eyes behind long bangs.
Because of this off-putting anti-social behavior, most of the class begins to ignor e her existence. Tsubaki is the one exception, though at first this may simply be because he sits next to her in class. However one evening he finds Urabe slumbering alone at her desk long after school ended. He wakes her up to make sure she gets home okay, but then Tsubaki does something not only strange, but a bit disturbing as well. After Urabe leaves, he finds himself focusing on a small puddle of drool she left on her desk and for unknown reasons, licks it.
Even stranger, not only does he find himself liking her drool, it actually tastes sweet to him. Things become even more abnormal as Tsubaki falls ill a few days later, so ill in fact that he seems to be getting sicker by the day. Oddly enough, Urabe seems to understand his affliction and ventures to his house to explain that because he tasted her drool, the two have formed a bond. The reason that he is so sick is because his body is going through withdrawals after not tasting more of Urabe’s drool for a few days.
You see, the drool bond between Urabe and Tsubaki forms a slow relationship between the two where they become girlfriend and boyfriend with the two sharing a routine every day. This routine of course sees Urabe giving Tsubaki some of her drool, usually on the tip of her finger, after school. However this odd beginning eventually begins to develop into a bit of a legitimate relationship as the two’s drool bond is explored over the course of the series.
Quickly it is shown that something is going on between the two and Urabe may be far more mysterious than anyone could have thought. Urabe’s issues with privacy, ice-cold nature and habit of only wanting to do things on her terms force their relationship into something that is so slow burning it is barely lit. Considering the series is called Mysterious Girlfriend X, they clearly have the mysterious part down with how Urabe acts, unfortunately nothing is ever explored in the series as to why she is this way or what this actual drool bond means.
This gets even more mysterious, and frustrating thanks to the series’ slow nature of going nowhere, when viewers factor in the fact that Urabe and Tsubaki can transfer their feelings and thoughts through the drool bond. On multiple occasions Urabe tests her drool on Tsubaki to see how he will react to various stimulations, often without his knowledge, and because of these often lewd situations his body always reacts accordingly.
Mysterious Girlfriend X is an odd series in more than one way. It primarily focuses on a small cast of characters and although some relationship aspects are explored with Tsubaki’s friend Ogata and Urabe’s eventual friend Oka, the spotlight throughout the series is Urabe and Tsubaki and their drool bond. The series’ strange take on the two’s relationship is… new to say the least and the drool aspect isn’t as off-putting as it sounds thanks to the amount of exploration it is given throughout the series. That being said, the crawling pace of the series will likely be more problematic than anything else as, although it is clear that the two certainly share a deep bond, there is a difference between a slow build and purposely going nowhere.
Visuals One of the most striking elements of Mysterious Girlfriend X, outside of the drool of course, is Hoods Entertainment’s decision to give the anime a retro animation style. Every visual aspect of Mysterious Girlfriend X feels like a combination of modern animation techniques stylized like what anime fans in the 1980s were experiencing. This is done through subtle design decisions and old-school character designs. As for the characters themselves, they are nicely designed though a bit run of the mill with Urabe begin the only exception. Thanks to the art direction, Urabe’s often obscured expressions work amazingly well and many of the best scenes in the series are those that feature Urabe’s uncovered face or her reaction to an event.
This retro element continues into the anime’s background designs as they are nicely detailed and whenever Tsubaki experiences a dream sequence, these fantastical dreams are elaborately animated and quite a treat. There are also a number noteworthy symbolic scenes implemented throughout the anime which work well. It is also worth noting that despite a few modern pieces of technology appearing here and there, viewers could easily place this anime somewhere in the 70s or 80s thanks to the animation studio’s devotion to the series.
Now one thing that Mysterious Girlfriend X handles quite nicely is the fan-service element. While there is quite an abundance of fan-service throughout the series, it is done in a tasteful manner. Sure there are a lot of panty shots thanks to Urabe’s panty scissors but this only adds to the oddity that is Urabe’s character. Any semblances of nudity are still shadowed out so while outlines can be seen, no actual nudity is presented. That being said, there are plenty of lewd sequences throughout the series and the drool aspect is highlighted throughout the anime with the animation style usually peaking whenever the often glittering liquid is involved.
Audio With Mysterious Girlfriend X Sentai Filmworks has provided their own English dub to the series and have also included the original Japanese voice track. As far as the English dubwork goes, Josh Grelle simply feels like an inappropriate voice actor for Tsubaki. Either through poor voice work or directing, his character sounds much older than a high school student should and although Urabe’s voice actress Genevieve Simmons sounds a bit too old for the role as well, her voice works considering Urabe’s character is meant to by mysterious and eccentric. It is worth noting however that Genevieve puts a lot of emphasis on the –kun honorific in Tsubaki’s name, so much in fact that it often doesn’t reflect the tone of what she is actually saying.
Alongside the voice work the anime has been given quite an memorable sound track with a number of great background songs used throughout the series to accentuate the events on screen. As far as opening and ending themes go, the opening “Orchestra of Love” and ending “Afterschool Promise” are both handled by Ayako Yoshitani, Urabe’s original Japanese voice actress. These songs are nice enough, but ultimately are unremarkable outside of the animation they are set to.
Extras As far as bonus features go; Mysterious Girlfriend X contains a rather basic set of extras that are barely worth noting. The discs contain the Japanese promo videos and a Japanese preview of the series, clean opening and ending animation sequences and trailers for other Sentai Filmworks releases. The Blu-ray discs feature Urabe in fan-service pose on the top side, so that’s something.
Overall Anime is certainly an interesting medium isn’t it? Where else can you find an adolescent love story centered entirely around drool? Mysterious Girlfriend X is a one of a kind anime series that tackles a number of relationship aspects from a brand new angle and features beautiful retro animation designs that look wonderful on Blu-ray. Unfortunately it’s crawling pace, inability to provide meaningful development, and hit and miss voice acting make this strange series one with plenty of style but not much substance… outside of drool of course.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing Publisher: NeocoreGames Developer:NeocoreGames Platforms: PC, XBLA Release Date: PC – May 22, 2013, XBLA (Coming Soon) Price: $14.99 – Here
Overview
NeocoreGames is a Hungarian based game developer that boasts its competitiveness and professionalism in the gaming industry. When creating games like King Arthur or The Kings’ Crusade, this studio aims to compete with the leading developers in the current RPG and RTS arenas. In their latest venture, NeocoreGames dives into the history of Van Helsing and creates an action packed role playing title with a world full of fabled adventures. Are they able to bridge the gap with the market’s current competition: Diablo 3, Path of Exile, or Torchlight 2?
Story
The Van Helsing name would have you believe that you would be taking the role of thee legendary werewolf/vampire hunter, yet you don the cape of a younger generation of the Helsing family. Being the son of Abraham Van Helsing, your heritage alone marks you as a dangerous hunter. However, Borgovia is the destination that conveniently marks the course ahead. Where once your father had forged great alliances to restore the city through creation of machines, the city now harbors the most vile abominations known to existence. Prepare yourself as old enemies become friends and old alliances age like milk.
As the game hits the ground running, you find yourself chasing quests and moving from checkpoint to checkpoint than really grasping the story. Your main objective – as with most Action RPGs – is to mow down the fodder until eventually a boss battle occurs. The story occasionally peeks out as a reference tool but retires back in its hole amongst the ever prevalent battles.
Gameplay
Building their own game engine, NeocoreGames has identified themselves as competitors. Mentioning this aspect is important because the style and movements of the title resemble a near cloned experience from Diablo 3. Ranging from the interactive interface to related key strokes, The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing has you at times questioning what game you are playing. Yet the developers also prepared their product by adhering to RPG foundations that even Diablo 3 did not include.
Attributes are an important way to customize your experience as all of the changes are in your court. Upon leveling Helsing, you may upgrade the following attributes: body, willpower, dexterity, and luck. Not only do you have to worry about your own stats, but also you must administer points to your ghostly companion – Katarina – to build her as a support, melee, range, or combination character. Possibilities are endless as you are able to distribute the points custom to your style of play. For instance, if I wanted Katarina to strictly be a ranged mage, I would place most of her attribute points into willpower. On the opposite hand, you could also invest into body and dexterity to make her an adept melee combatant.
Continuing with great strides, the title also features multiple skill trees. When Helsing levels, he is able to learn new skills by distributing points in appropriate skill trees. To obtain more ranged abilities, distributing points into the “Mystic Warrior” tree would help garner skills like “Flaming Sphere” that hurls a ball a fire at a target! Who knew that Helsing could be so powerful?
Additional to skill trees are more abilities known as “Tricks” and “Auras”. Auras are passive abilities that work in the background metrics and feeds Helsing bonuses with supplemental health, damage, or even resistance. Tricks on the other hand are known as active abilities and either require a cooldown before next use or both a cooldown and mana cost. Skill points can be spent on these abilities instead of the melee or ranged skill tree and provide greater bonuses at higher ranks.
What else does the title have to offer? Perks are nice little tidbits that offer permanent bonuses to your character upon gaining reputation. Similar to your experience bar, your reputation grows by slaying special creatures through your journey. These creatures include any enhanced being that sports a different shade/color to make it stand out from the rest of the crowd. They also tend to be much harder to kill and manifest stranger abilities than the normal fodder.
Ever feel like running into a massive crowd just to get your jollies pumping? Well, having more than one player can aid you in tearing up the land, but you will experience some lag with that much commotion going on. Lots of monsters/actions equals a lot of pressure on your processor to push through messages in order to make your frames per second look happy. I believe NeocoreGames are actively looking into this issue mainly in multiplayer functionality.
Multiplayer is completely optional, thus yielding no online requirement except for Steam activation. Four players can collectively venture into the world and decimate creatures. Since the game is relatively inexpensive, the option of acquiring four friends to purchase the game and play is reasonable. When you begin an online character, you are asked to join or create a game. By enabling your character to show “Online”, you are welcoming any Van Helsing adventurer to join your instance. At the home screen you may also decide to join someone else’s already created game. There are NO level restrictions when joining other players. At the moment not many players are currently taking advantage of the multiplayer aspect which regretfully lessens its current value.
Since players can reach the level cap of 30 fairly easily, NeocoreGames released a free Scenario DLC in order to keep the high level characters busy. Players can decide from the main menu whether to continue their normal campaign or to play on Scenario which limits the player to a few high level areas. Scenario pits a player against higher level creatures in hopes to gain greater loot as well as a higher reputation. Teaming up with friends may be advantageous for lower level adventurers in this case.
Visuals
Kudos must be given to NeocoreGames in developing their own engine to compete in today’s market. And with that acknowledgement the engine performs quite well given the close visual comparison with Diablo 3. These guys prove that any company with the right mindset can stand out in the crowd of well-known repertoire. Let’s take the visual effects for example. Given the detail put into making a “Flaming Sphere” happen, they have also programmed the spell to cause changes in an afflicted area. Detail done right can be an amazing thing.
As text appears on the screen in forms of tooltips or dialogue, you will notice that some words are misspelled. While this is not overly concerning, people that experience such bugs could think the title to have problems in other areas due to lack of attention.
Audio
Even as Hugh Jackman isn’t the voice actor for Van Helsing, I remained content with the overall performance delivered. Or perhaps my mind was too concentrated on what Katarina had to say. She always throws in her two cents whether Van likes it or not. Such comic relief gives a nice twist to the dark themes encapsulated within the story.
Gothic-noir genre titles – be it movie or game – should follow a theme to continually drive a Tim Burton depression into its listeners. Such a theme can be felt during the transitional loading screens. Visually, you have the blood smear dropping across the screen as well as blotching the destination marker. By listening to the audio you can notice darkness in its tones. Combining both attributes together fluidly makes for a good transition from one area to another.
Overall
Lacking in the game at the moment are a couple aspects. Currently there are a few bugs that may leave the game feeling unpolished, but future updates over Steam can help cure this issue. In addition, the story seems to simmer in the background while the action is piping hot. If the team were to balance this ratio a little bit more or add alternate story paths, a greater replay value could be accomplished.
The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing delivers a quality title for a fraction of the cost. The game provides a great foundation for gameplay which mimics successful competitors. During development NeocoreGames must have kept the player’s needs before their own to make an understandable interface as well as providing heavily desired RPG elements. How often can you pay $15 for what seems like a retail game?

Sony has released a video revealing the inclusion of multiplayer in their soon to be released title, The Last of Us. The game, developed by Naughty Dog, is set in a world overrun by a floral plague, creating an abnormally natural apocalypse. Whilst the single player is set to focus on characters Joel and Ellie, the multiplayer will allow the player to control a number of other survivors. The multiplayer will include elements of the singleplayer campaign, such as building and enhancing weaponry, along with stealth and takedowns. It also appears to employ objectives or specific level hazards, judging from the apparent rundown of each week:
Week 2: Day 1 – Marauder Attack
Week 3: Day 1 – Hostages Taken
Week 4: Day 1 – Dysentery Outbreak
Week 5: Day 1 – Friendly Survivors Found
Week 6: Day 1 – Rescue Allies
Week 7: Day 1 – Malaria Outbreak
Week 8: Day 1 – Firefly Attack
The Last of Us is in stores for the Playstation 3 on June 14th. Until then, check out the trailer below and catch a glimpse of The Last of Us in multiplayer. Can you survive 12 weeks?
Overview As one of the most popular shonen manga of all time, the jump to anime was just a matter of time for Toriko. The popularity of the genre in both eastern and western markets is undeniable, but is Toriko a refreshing slice of action or is it following a stale formula?
Dear Cod, let’s cray that the cricket is alright
Story “This is the Gourmet Age, where the world’s manliest heroes quest for yet undiscovered culinary delights”
Welcome to the world of Toriko. A world in which food is the centre of culture, business and everything in between. A world where it has been said that there exist mountains of ice cream, rivers of yoghurt and flora such as the four leaf cloverger. Also there are ten tonne terrors that that are as dangerous as they are ridiculous, on the plus side most of them are delicious though.
Toriko himself is a Gourmet Hunter and his job is to seek out rare and dangerous ingredients. Following his own moral code, he possesses an “Eat what you Defeat” mentality and respects the creatures he defeats. His main drive is to complete his Full Course Menu of Life, the goal of every Gourmet Hunter, an eight course meal containing the ingredients dubbed perfect by each individual hunter. Already established as a hunter of great repute, Collection 1 follows Toriko as he journeys with his new companion Komatsu. Having met in episode 1, the two become fast friends and travel the world meeting, then eating, many creatures in a monster-of-the-week format. The sheer size and power of these creatures creates great fight scenes that immediately express the strength of anyone that can just survive a confrontation, let alone flip and slice one.
This Demon Snake is about to get pythowned
As the episodes progress, the details of a larger plot begin to rise amidst the culinary carnage. A sinister organisation known as the Gourmet Corps, wishes to gain monopoly over the greatest ingredients in the world. Whether this is for power or monetary gain is yet to be fully explored, but they remain a devious and mysterious enemy. Also introduced throughout Collection 1 are a cadre of secondary characters, ranging from newcomers to legendary allies. Both regular people and gourmet powerhouses are added to the fray and each have yet to be truly explored. Apart from the obvious defining personality traits, the series is yet to delve into the true motivations of each character.
These early episodes definitely set up the world of Toriko, establishing the culture and nature of life within a food lover’s heaven. It also depicts the vast difference in power and motivation of characters, though more could’ve been explored in regards to character development as a whole.
Attack of the Fifty Foot Whatever
Visuals Toriko is vibrant. The colours presented in the series are striking, noticeable in our blue haired, orange jumpsuited hero. Each character is designed uniquely and are immediately recognisable from a distance, in no small part due to bright outfits and the noticeable differences in size between the main cast. As it is the core focus of the entire series, the food in Toriko is presented with great emphasis. Never before has animated food looked so delicious and life changing. There is a piece of meat that literally sparkles, not just for anime effect, it’s the literal power of the meat and a part of what makes it so rare. The beauty of each piece of food contrasts the beasts it generally comes from. Each creature is monstrous in both size and appearance, generally an amalgamation of two real world creatures with a little bit of anime terror thrown in. Case in point: the Regal mammoth, a titanic, tiger striped mammoth bearing dual trunks and size that rivals islands.
Just be happy it’s walking away
Audio Overall the audio within the episodes of Toriko isn’t overly memorable. The soundtrack does compliment the action sequences somewhat, though it is generally fairly low in volume, adding rather than amplifying. The soundtrack in general gives of the style of similar shonen style anime, giving it a nostalgic feel.
The opening theme song “Gatsu Gatsu!!” sums up Toriko in its entirety. It’s an upbeat, overly dramatic song about muscle, meat and mayhem. As soon as episode 1 begins, you can judge what your in for based on the intro alone. The ending theme “Satisfaction” takes a more calmed approach which, although not entirely connected to the personality of main cast, expresses the sense of the journey the series represents.
Try and make him fetch, I dare you
Extras Toriko Collection features the usual extras you would expect to find in an anime release. There are textless versions of both “Gatsu Gatsu!!” and “Satisfaction”, trailers for numerous other anime, along with the US trailer for Toriko.
Also included in the extras is commentary for episodes 1 and 9. Commentary for episode 1 is provided by Ian Sinclair and Josh Grelle, the voices of Toriko and Komatsu respectively. The commentary is interesting in that, despite speaking little about the show itself, it delves into the real life friendship between the two voice actors and their own love of food, adding creedence to their performances in the series. Episode 9 is commentated by Ian Sinclair once more, along with Leah Clarke and Aaron Roberts, the voices of Rin and Sunny. Once again the voice actor delve into the topic of food, exploring their love of the culinary arts and the difficulty of mimicking the act of talking with a full mouth in the voice booth.
Just a Heavenly King and his Battle Wolf
Overall Toriko is an over the top, fun filled quest for action and food. It is a true shonen series, full of over the top combat, an intensely manly protagonist and a sense of awe through a world that may or may not contain literal mountains of food. Toriko isn’t a series that will challenge your mind or bring to light any social issues, but it doesn’t need to and it isn’t meant to. Toriko is a fun, over the top series that is as simple and stupid as it is awesome. Where else would you find a series where fighters use cutlery martial arts to defeat delicious monstrosities? “Tune in for another huge helping of fun”
