Overview
Golgo 13, the greatest sniper and professional assassin, in all of the world finds his complete series collected in one set. With the ability to make impossible shots and willing to carry out missions that no one else will do, Golgo 13 is an interesting beast. Collecting all 50 episodes together is definitely the ultimate collection, but is it worthy of this pro among pros?

Story
The story of Golgo 13 as a series is fairly easy to pick up on right away, 50 almost completely one-shot adventures of the sniper Duke Togo, code-named Golgo 13, as he travels the global meeting and killing interesting people. While there isn’t an over arching plot across the entirety of the series, there are still a few instances of addition developments, characters popping back up in Golgo’s life again. Though the fact is that the vast majority of re-occurrences of characters tends to happen in the first half of the series. Does the series hurt from a lack of overall plot? Not particularly, as it probably made the show easier to get into when originally airing on TV, where other anime tend to view much better straight through.

So, based solely as a series of stand alone adventures, Golgo 13 does a decent job in supplying action and sex, the only thing the series really lacks however is a central focus. The main character, Duke Togo himself, is predominantly an emotional void, the first few episodes focus on him and just how amazing he is, but it does become stale pretty quickly. Luckily however the show finds a much better aspect to spend its time, the side characters. Without a central supporting cast the series instead treats each episode as a view into different people’s lives, not with Golgo as the main character, but simply a plot device. Akin to the series Hell Girl, this show isn’t trying to sell people on how awesome Golgo is or say anything too deeply about him, anytime it does try it does so ham-handedly, but look at the type of people that would hire an assassin and for what reasons, then look at what happens because of it.

Based on these realizations on the show, it is easy to see where the episodes lie in terms of quality. Generally those centered around Golgo are alright but not outstanding, while those where he is just a plot device succeed in creating a fairly realistic world, even with Golgo going around shooting strings off violins. Having all the episodes able to stand alone then makes it much easier to accomplish this. The series also does well in terms of originality, every job in every episode is different enough to avoid becoming boring or predictable, plus at 50 episodes the series doesn’t end up having to go too far outlandishly, the mech episode not-withstanding.

Visuals
In terms of art, Golgo 13 is very flat and muted though as a stylistic choice. Every scene is filtered through a grain, to give a somewhat “realistic” feel to the series, that while makes sense does end up distracting somewhat, especially on Blu-Ray. In held in contrast with the commercial bookends every episode that don’t have this filter, it feels like the viewer is forced to miss out on quality. The commercial bookends really do look spectacular, acting almost as individual posters for each episode.

The character designs are for the most part well done throughout the series, with one unfortunate problem. With 50 episodes of different characters, many of whom getting killed, several character designs end up seeming to be reused. It can be somewhat disengaging to see a new character that looks strikingly similar to someone that had been killed episodes ago, but with the bodycount the series has, it’s almost inevitable.

Audio
The voice acting suffers in the same way as the character designs, just in a different way, meaning of course that with so many different characters throughout the series the voice acting ends up sounding a little ridiculous partway through. Seeming to impact the English dub far more than the original Japanese, new characters start to sound more silly in an effort to distinguish all the different characters throughout the series. So preference might lean towards the Japanese because of this.

The music, excluding the opening and ending themes, is very similar to noir or radio plays in terms of execution. With a small set of specific themes for things like suspense, mystery, and action, Golgo 13 goes about its music very simply and do well to fit the style of the series as a whole. The opening themes, “Take the Wave” by Naifu and “So Faraway” by Pinc Inc, as well as all four ending ending themes “Glass Highway” by doa, “Yume no Hitotsu by Garnet Crow, “Sono Hohoemi Yo Eien ni” by Aiko Kitahara, and “Mou Kimi wo Hitori ni Sasenai” by U-KA Saegusa in DB seem strange at first not really fitting the themes of the series, until seen from the side of the clients, instead of Golgo. Viewed this way all the themes represent all the different things Golgo is to his clients, from carrying out their dreams to being a lover.

Extras
In terms of special features the 6 Blu-Ray disc set doesn’t hold all that much. It does include clean opening and endings, plus the trailers for other upcoming series, but not much else outside of the 50 episode series. The clean opening and endings themselves are weird as they are not separated out individually, but instead just as both openings together and the endings together. The feature also lacks the first ending entirely, so playing the clean ending animation will only show the second, third, and fourth, which is odd, though these three together actually do form a small story unto themselves.

Overall
Golgo 13 is not a series about Golgo 13, but instead the separate stories of both bad and good people as they live their lives and hire snipers to do things for them. Judged on this, the series does a good job, but is definitely not right for everyone. Though unfortunately the series choose to hamstring its visual and audio for style the series still has something to offer. Those that want to know more about Golgo the man, will be left wanting, while those interested in looking at a wide variety of character pieces will find something interesting unfold in the vast majority of episodes.

Magic: The Gathering Theros Prerelease Info

theros-title-card-01

As Magic: The Gathering players know full well, each year brings with it a brand new block of cards. These new blocks are made up of three different sets that tell a story within the Magic Multiverse. Each set brings with it new characters, new worlds, new lore and a boatload of cards for players to rip open and put in their decks.

The upcoming Theros block will be no exception. Based heavily on Greek mythology, Theros will introduce new mechanics to the game like Enchantment Creatures and Heroic abilities. As with all sets, Theros (the first installment in the Theros Block) will be having a prerelease event this weekend. The event will be playable at your local gaming store, so be sure to head down and check it out. However, unlike previous prereleases, Wizards are doing something very special for Theros.

The prerelease for Theros will have players embarking on a massive quest known as the Hero’s Path. The path will be broken up into nine different stages, the first of which is this week’s prerelease. When you go to a prerelease this weekend, you will pick one of five heroic paths to play, each based on one of Magic’s colours: Path of Honor (White), Path of Wisdom (Blue), Path of Ambition (Black), Path off Battle (Red), or the Path of Might (Green).

theros-honor-01
The Path of Honor Hero Pack

After you have picked your hero’s path, you will be given a Hero Pack corresponding to your colour. The Hero pack will include 5 boosters of the Theros set, a life counter d20 in your chosen colour, a ‘seeded’ booster pack that will feature cards that fit your path, a prerelease promo card and a hero card. The hero card will not be playable at the prerelease but will instead be used in a later quest along the Hero’s Path.

Like other prereleases, you are tasked with assembling a 40 card deck from the booster packs you open and playing against other players. Everyone who attends should get a booster pack as a prize, with winning players earning more and more (so there is an incentive to play your best).

Theros looks to be a really exciting block in Magic: The Gathering’s already storied history. With gods, demons, and a Trojan Horse, you wont want to miss out. The prerelease is only the first step on the hero’s path, and players who complete all nine steps over the next 12 months will find themselves earning prizes, cards and a spot on the Hall of Heroes, so be sure to not miss out.

For those who want to know more about how a Magic: The Gathering prerelease runs, we have a great article about the M14 Prerelease here, and if you haven’t done so yet, check out our review of the Xbox 360, PS3, PC, iPad and Android game; Magic 2014: Duels of the Planeswalkers. Also, click here if you want to know more about how the Hero’s Path will run for the remainder of the year.

The prerelease runs this weekend September 21-22 at local game shops. So will you be attending the Theros prerelease? If so what path will you be following? I personally will be taking part in a few of the events down at The Hall of Heroes in Campbelltown, and heading down the the Path of Honor… and maybe the Path of Might. Let us know in the comments below what you will be doing, and as always, stay tuned to Capsule Computers for all the Magic: The Gathering news as it becomes available.

Magic: The Gathering Hero’s Path Info

theros-heros-path-title-01

This weekend marks the prerelease for the latest Magic: The Gathering set; Theros. Theros is heavily inspired by Greek Mythology and in celebration of that fact, the guys over at Wizards are offering a unique gameplay experience for all players. Starting with this weekend’s prerelease, players will be able to embark upon the Hero’s Quest. Along the way they will face terrifying creatures and overcome the odds to have their names forever etched into the Hall of Heroes.

Since this is such a grand undertaking, I thought I would break down the Theros Hero’s Path will operate. The Hero’s Path itself is broken down into 9 different stages, the first 3 being playable as part of the Theros release, the next 3 will be part of the Born of the Gods set, and the final 3 will take place around the time Journey Into Nyx (and the completion of the Theros block) is released.

theros-heros-path-01

This weekend, September 21-22 will be the official Prerelease for the Theros set. During this set, you will begin on the Hero’s Path by choosing which path you want to take. There are five paths to choose, each corresponding with a Magic: The Gathering mana colour. The paths you can take are;

Path of Honor (White) Manaw.gif

Path of Wisdom (Blue) Manau.gif

Path of Ambition (Black) Manab.gif

Path of Battle (Red) Manar.gif

Path of Might (Green) Manag.gif

After picking your path, you will be given a Hero’s Pack containing your cards. In addition, each path offers a different Hero Card. These Hero Cards correspond to your Hero’s Pack will help you on the later stages of your quest. For more information about the prerelease, including what you will receive in your Hero’s pack click here.

theros-heros-path-02

The second step along the hero’s path is the official release day for Theros. Friday September 27 is the day that Theros cards can be officially played in sanctioned tournaments, starting with the weekly Friday Night Magic (FNM). Players who attend the launch weekend tournaments will have the chance to complete a puzzle that will be in-store on that day. Players who complete the puzzle will earn their second Hero Card, and be one step closer to becoming a true hero. As a little bit of a spoiler, I have thrown up the poster that you will see in-stores during that weekend, so you can try and figure out what it all means. (a little hint; it is to do with a creature in the Theros set).

theros-poster-01

theros-heros-path-03

Every new set of Magic brings with it a Game Day tournament. The Theros Game Days will be held on October 19th-20th. However, in addition to normal tournaments and gameplay happening, players will have the chance to complete the final step in the Theros Hero’s Path; by facing down a terrible Hydra.

The Hydra is a boss fight for players, who using their standard deck will do battle against a pre-made Hydra deck that is designed to run itself. The goal of the battle is to destroy all of the Hydra’s heads before they can kill you. This boss fight will not be easy, so to help you along your way, you will be able to use the Hero Cards you have collected along your journey (no more than two can be used in the battle). So make sure you prepare your deck, and face your fears as you stare into the eyes of the soulless Hydra.

After you have slayed the fell beast, you will heave earned your third Hero Card, and have officially completed all of the Theros Hero’s Path Quests. You can take your well deserved rest until February 2014, when the Born of the Gods set is released, and the 4-6 steps along the Hero’s Path begin.

theros-hydra-01

So there you have it, The first three steps along the Hero’s Path. If you can’t make the prerelease, or any of the events for that matter, don’t worry as you can start the Hero’s path from wherever you choose. It helps to attend all of them in order to build up your collection of Hero Cards, and players who complete all nine quests will receive additional prizes from Wizards.

Will you be attending the prerelease? What about completing the Quests along the Hero’s Path? Let us know in the comments below, and if you haven’t done so, then check out our review of the Xbox 360, PS3, PC, iPad and Android game; Magic 2014: Duels of the Planeswalkers.
