Man builds machine to catch Shiny Pokemon

In the effort to remove all effort involved in catching ‘Shiny’ Pokemon, a man has invented a machine that can catch ‘Shinies’ without the hard work involved with catching them – hard work which is not unlike the hard work that goes into building a machine to catch ‘Shiny’ Pokemon.

The man uploaded a video to youtube featuring the wicked gadget in action which you can check out below. The machine effectively performs chain fishing in the game by repeating 3DS button presses without requiring button be pressed. Eventually the system will recognize a ‘shiny’ and alert you with a beeping sound. Find out how this man did this thing in the video below.

The Legend Becomes Real

Artifex Mundi announces its latest adventure game, Grim Legends. The title, scheduled to appear in Q1 of 2014, is set in a dark fairy tale world full of superstitions and magic. Beta

Grim Legends tells the story of a young woman whose twin sister is kidnapped by a monster from local folklore, a giant bear with supernatural predilections. Setting out to follow the beast’s tracks and find her sister, she enters a world where reality is not what it seems, where magic haunts her every step, as she traverses through a mysterious, ancient forest filled with fairy tale creatures and long-forgotten temples, to a labyrinth where one wrong decision could mean death.

Each clue reveals a new piece of the puzzle about her ties to this mystery, some going back generations. Sometimes legends are more than mere stories meant to fill us with fear and awe. Sometimes, they come true…

Players who joined the Beta Program can already check Artifex Mundi’s latest title, and can even influence the final release by completing a special survey about the look and quality of the game.

The game is scheduled for release Q1 of 2014.

Journey to Rainbow Island Novel Available Next Week

Christie Hsiao, CEO of Serenity Media Group and acclaimed film producer and actress (That Game of Chess), has moved onto writing a fantasy adventure novel series, Journey to Rainbow Island.

The first book, Journey to Rainbow Island, follows 11-year old Yu-ning on a brave adventure into the dark world to save her best friend, Romeo and reclaim the stolen Sacred Crystals from the furious dragon, Obsidigon. On an international scale, Christie Hsiao’s novel explores themes of overcoming adversity, team work and breaking away from societal controls and norms for individuals to develop personal power.

By incorporating multiple media platforms, Serenity have created a video game ‘Yu-ning’s Archery Challenge’ on Facebook, iOS at the App Store and Android devices at Google Play, and are currently developing a 3D animation feature of Journey to Rainbow Island.

Tearaway Preview

Media Molecule is best known for the creation of Little Big Planet, a series of games built on creativity, customisation, and imagination. After two console outings Sackboy and Craftworld hit the handheld world with LBP PS Vita, which expanded the interactive elements of the game thanks to the PlayStation Vita‘s dual touch screen controls. It was excellent.

It would have been quite easy for the team to continue on with Sackboy as their handheld mascot, but luckily for us they decided to create something completely new. Tearaway, another Sony exclusive, is Media Molecule’s next logical but delightful step.

Like in LBP, players take a customisable mascot on a journey through a dynamic, crafty world, this time based on paper craft. Despite some similarities with LBP Tearaway is very much its own thing. It’s fully 3D, has been built from the ground up for the Vita and has a much greater emphasis on touch controls and player interactivity. Where Little Big Planet poked a hole through the fourth wall, Tearaway smashes it down with a nifty paper craft hammer.

Players can choose to play as Iota or Atoi, a male or female messenger on a mission to deliver a special message to the player. The player quickly pops up in the game, with the front camera of the Vita used to stick your mug right in the game world. The narration introduces you as a helpful, godlike being who can influence the world to help Atoi or Iota deliver their message. You live in the sun, just like the baby in Teletubbies.

The bad guys in the tale are the Scraps, paper monsters terrorising the world and it’s various kooky inhabitants. Atoi can’t jump to begin with, so players must use the Vita’s front and back screens to get rid of the enemies by poking holes in the floor, moving platforms and rolling objects. What Atoi can do (aside from walk around) is pick up objects and talk, which is a deceptively simple moveset when you begin to uncover some of the more unique mechanics of Tearaway.

In keeping with the papercraft world players can be called upon to create objects by tracing and cutting pieces of paper using the touch screen as a virtual crafting board. The interface works wonderfully even if the limit on how far you can trace is a bit irksome – but that’s what layers are for!

My first design request came from a squirrel who had had his crown stolen, so I whipped him up a new one complete with gems and stuck it on his head. As it turns out he was the king of the squirrels, so my reward was generous- a camera, complete with unlockable lenses and filters.

Tearaway essentially has its own version of Instagram, and it is highly addictive. Collect enough of the confetti scattered around the landscape and you can buy a macro lens, a sepia filter, a zoom lens – all manner of photographic kit. And yes, the macro lens won’t give you a good shot unless you’re up close, and if something is moving you’ll probably get motion blur – madness! Confetti can also be used to buy objects to dress up your character, which functions in much the same way as the customise part of the Poppit in Little Big Planet.

The papercraft world is gorgeous, so you will be using that camera to snap some of the things you come across. Although the graphics are pretty simple there is a real life to the world: lighting can change from day to night in a matter of steps, grass ruffles as you run through it, you can splash through the puddles and watch waves of water crash down a waterfall. New creatures appear every now and again, gophers, deer, and a pig that you have to dress up because she isn’t quite pretty enough for Mr Pig. I came across two squirrels playing catch with an apple, and can I? Yes, I can play catch with those squirrels! I can also feel bad enough about walking away from them that I had to find some acorns to feed them – when a game is giving you virtual guilt over a game of catch with some squirrels then you know it’s sucked you in.

Tearaway is lovely, quite simply. It puts a stupid grin on your face and it will go ahead and show you that. Seeing your own face in the game is a little disconcerting at first, but when a bunch of paper critters begin to worship you that feeling is quickly displaced by a warm fluffiness that actually made me wave at one point. Terrible.

The adventure aspect of the gameplay is fairly simple, but the quickly expanded moveset hints that things will progress beyond the few areas I got to experience. At the beginning Atoi can’t even jump, but that gets unlocked and is quickly followed by the ability to roll, opening up a wider range of platforming set ups.

The levels have plenty of room to get creative thanks to the limitless papercraft theme, and the Vita has a lot of different control options available – even the microphone gets a look in. The themed areas seem to be set up in a linear fashion and there is no hub, but the presence of hidden goodies throughout the levels hints at there being at least some backtracking.

Tearaway looks like it will be a must for fans of Media Molecule’s work. It is charming, unique, and will draw you in to it’s delightful little world with ease. The game is due for release on November 20, and will be exclusive to the PlayStation Vita.

Sid Meier’s Ace Patrol: Pacific Skies Available Now

2K and Firaxis today celebrate the official launch of Sid Meier’s Ace Patrol: Pacific Skies on Steam for Windows PC for the low price of $8.99. Those looking for a portable fix of the game can enjoy the iOS version which is launching on the App Store very soon on November 7.

From the creative mind of legendary game designer Sid Meier, Ace Patrol: Pacific Skies takes players on more than 180 missions through the treacherous skies of the Pacific Ocean theater of World War II for a turn-based battle for air supremacy. Featuring the tactical and historical elements of Sid’s early combat flight simulators combined with some of the turn-based strategy gameplay of popular Firaxis franchises such as XCOM and Civilization, players are invited to pilot some of the most iconic American and Japanese fighter planes from the army or navy’s aviation units through various historical battles such as Pearl Harbor, Midway and Guadalcanal.

EA has released the SimCity: Cities of Tomorrow expansion pack intro trailer ahead of its forthcoming release on November 14 for PC and Mac. You can view the video embedded at the bottom of the article.

SimCity: Cities of Tomorrow will provide new regions, futuristic technologies and fresh specialisations and transportation methods to transform your city with. The intro video showcases both The Academy and OmegaCo specialisations in particular. After unlocking the required research, players will then be able to shape their cities using MagLevs, Drone factories, Garbage Atomizers Wave Generators and more. Dwarfing the city skyline will be these (quite ominous) multi-zoned, Dredd-esque MegaTowers.

Team Ninja celebrate 500k downloads of DOA 5 Ultimate: Core Fighters

To celebrate 500,000 downloads for Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate: Core Fighters, Team Ninja have thrown a tailgate party to give back to the amazing and supportive players of the game.

Available now for players is new costumes and characters to download and use in the game. In an interesting bit of crossover there is costumes available that are based on the immortal classic game Tecmo Bowl.

Metro: Last Light Now on Linux

Deep Silver and 4A Games have released the Linux version of Metro: Last Light via Steam while confirming support for Steam OS and the Steam Controller. Making use of Steam Play, owners of any Steam version will find the game added to their PC, Mac and Linux libraries.

Those lucky 300 Steam members chosen to test the Steam Machine prototype will find a copy of the game included on the hardware.

Mac users will also be able to enjoy what was one of the finest, linear experiences this year by grabbing the game off the App Store.

Metro: Last Light is a detailed first-person shooter set beneath the ruins of Moscow following a nuclear war. The population live in the massive metro complex, divided by factional wars and limited supplies. Need convincing? Check out our review.
