The Pilot’s Love Song anime licensed by NIS America

the-pilots-love-song-key-artRemember The Princess and the Pilot? The anime movie that NIS America released last May, that we reviewed here? Well there is currently an anime series airing in Japan called The Pilot’s Love Song and it just so happens to take place in the same storyline universe as the aforementioned movie.

Why is this relevant you ask? Well today NIS America has announced that they have acquired the rights for the anime and are currently offering the anime for streaming on Crunchyroll and will be releasing a physical version of the anime in North America sometime in the future.

The company is describing the story as thus: “In order to uncover the “end of the sky,” as spoken of in ancient mythology, Kal-el Albus is sent to Isla, an island in the sky. There he attends Cadoques High’s Aerial Division, where he enjoys a carefree life with his schoolmates. That is…until a surprise attack by the air tribe drags Isla into a bloody war.”

Sakura Trick Episode 4 Impressions

Sakura Trick

Before the OP begins we are treated to an after school scene where Haruka is sleeping on her desk, much to Yuu’s surprise as it is normally the other way around. Yuu then decides to give Haruka a few kisses on her head, hand, arm and leg only to discover she was actually pretending the whole time.  This brief moment ends with Haruka asking about all the kisses and Yuu replying “Because I couldn’t reach your mouth.” No sugar for me thanks, this is already sweet enough.

4-A: A Sour Plan?

Mitsuki is still strung up about what she saw in Yuu’s bedroom from Episode 3, whilst Yuu explained she merely tripped over and fell on Haruka her older sister doesn’t buy this cover up. Determined to find out more about what the two girls have been getting up to, she asks Ikeno and Iizuka (who she mistakes as Lemon-san, much to the enjoyment of Ikeno) to secretly observe her little sister and her “close friend” and create a report about any weird interactions between the two. Now you would think that they could write an entire novel about how close Yuu and Haruka are, but because they are so used to how the two girls behave they don’t even register what could be considered unusual, there’s even a scene where Ikeno states that she wouldn’t bat an eyelid if she saw Haruka kissing Yuu’s cheek.

Sakura-Trick-Episode-4-Screenshot-02

The fun continues when Ikeno and Lemo- I mean Iizuka secretly follow Haruka into a convenient store and the only thing they find out is that she knows what type of ice-cream Yuu likes, again this comes as no surprise to them however it would send Mitsuki into an over extrapolation of thoughts. We do get a typical spying moment when Haruka is about to run into Ikeno and Iizuka and the two have to cover their faces, they do this by picking up some random magazines and pretending to read them, my first thought from watching this was “wouldn’t it be funny if they picked up some adult themed magazines by mistake,” turns out I was right.

Sakura-Trick-Episode-4-Screenshot-03

Back to school now where we see Yuu sitting on Kotone’s lap (as you do) and Haruka trying to tempt her over with the ice-cream she just bought, instead of reporting on this Ikeno and Iizuka join in as sports commentators and end up writing down how easily Haruka trips over. The story ends as per usual with Haruka and Yuu sharing a special yuri moment and Mitsuki finding out nothing about the two, but don’t worry because she gets her chance to do the tailing over in the second half of this episode.

4-B: Could This Be a Test of Courage?

With so many events taking place in school, it’s nice to see a story where they aren’t hanging out in their uniforms. In this night-time setting Yuu and Haruka are meeting up with the rest of the girls for a fireworks night, however Kotone left two hours before everyone with what appeared to be a head of hair and Ikeno is nowhere to be found. No need to panic guys, I’m sure Ikeno is fine; she even left a note for them on the street floor…

Sakura-Trick-Episode-4-Screenshot-04

Well it looks like they have a mystery on their hands and what better way to find both missing girls then to split into two and walk along the dark forest path. Maybe it’s just me but I was reminded of Scooby Doo when Shizuku suggested pairing up and it doesn’t help that it’s set in an almost spooky location too, but the girls do decide to split as they think this is actually a test of courage. By pulling out different pieces of paper that had the coloured tips concealed, Yuu is paired with Shizuku and Haruka is with Iizuka which came as nice surprise to me as I was interested in seeing how the two would react when they weren’t always with each other. Sadly they decide to partner swap so the yuri couple will be walking together, this was to be expected but I did feel sorry for poor little lemon; the light hearted humour towards her is funny but you could tell she was genuinely upset when Haruka wanted to swap, I hope she gets a sweet moment in future eps.

Sakura-Trick-Episode-4-Screenshot-05

Anyway whilst Haruka and Yuu are walking down the forest path they begin to suspect they might not be alone, and right they are because Mitsuki is following every step they take thanks to the glow in the dark paint she applied to Yuu’s hair clips. This clever little tracking tip backfires however when we find out she applied the paint to her own hair pieces as well and when concealed in the shadows, she looks like a horrible glowing eyed monster called out Yuu’s name. The two girls run off in fear, Haruka gives a kiss to Yuu in order to calm her down and ends up getting her tongue bitten when Mitsuki emerges from the bushes. Once all three of them are together (and Yuu having to lie about what her older sister saw again), they walk towards the end of the path and find the fireworks display along with the rest of the girls.

Sakura-Trick-Episode-4-Screenshot-06

This story overall was quite enjoyable; it was a shame they didn’t split up Haruka and Yuu since the events that followed up were exactly what Haruka was hoping for, well maybe not the part when Mitsuki walks in. There is a short scene where Ikeno and Iizuka give Mitsuki the evils and we even see Mitsuki smiling at the end when she sees Haruka with Yuu, stating that “Haruka-san really is a nice girl.”

With each new episode, Sakura Trick gets more intense with both the kisses and actions of the characters, there is always a new element added that progresses each story and adds more drama whilst still maintaining a sense of light heartedness. Mitsuki is starting to accept Haruka and I am looking forward to what happens when she finds out the truth. Now if only there were more stories focused around the other girls too… well one in particular, don’t worry lemon I’ll pair with you any time.

Even Conception II’s savior of mankind needs a best friend

conception-II-children-of-the-seven-stars-screenshot- (2)

Think of a romcom anime and try to find one that doesn’t have a best friend character trying to help out the lead in some way. Sure there are a number of them but more often than not the lead has a best friend and in Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars, your best friend happens to be a guy named Chlotz and this time around Atlus has released a number of new screenshots focusing and details on him.

Chlotz is a blunt but well-meaning guy that happens to be the younger brother of the genius heroine Chloe. He often plays the third wheel with the main character and acts like an idiot most of the time, but he is rather skilled at what he does and he is willing to sacrifice anything to help his friends or keep them in line.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 Trailer Displays the Void Sword

castlevania-lords-of-shadow-2-void-sword-01

Sure, you will have a lot in your arsenal for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, but none come as crushing as the Void Sword. In their recent downpour of promotion, Konami have release a trailer showing the blood that can be spilled with the weapon, and I am digging what is on display.

Thus far, we have gotten piece by piece of Mercury Steam’s follow-up delivered to us in trailer form, and with the game less than three weeks away, it is time to prepare to jump into 2014’s first true blockbuster. Check out the clip of the sword action below, and stay tuned for even more clips in the near future.

EA Announces 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil Video Game

2014-FIFA-World-Cup-Brazil-Screen-05

Every four years, despite being watered-down versions of what the main series entries have to offer, EA releases their FIFA World Cup officially licensed video game (obviously, being officially licensed means a bigger money deal than simply releasing a more practical FIFA World Cup DLC update). And so, like clockwork, the publisher has just announced EA Sports2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil.

Coming to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil boasts improvements to gameplay, such as Response Dribbling and Pinpoint Passing, also featuring 100 fresh animations from passes to saves and penalty kicks. The included 203 national teams, 7,469 players, 19 officially licensed managers, and 21 new stadiums (12 of which comprise the authentic stadiums from Brazil) brings the experience to life. Furthermore, Live City events from all corners of the globe have been implemented, so basically if you choose Australia and score a goal, you’ll see a fan reaction clip from Sydney… which will most likely be one of shock and amazement. The crowds will also utilise brand-new banners, flags and seat cards for the festivities’ celebrations.

2014-FIFA-World-Cup-Brazil-Screen-03

In terms of game modes, we are promised the deepest yet. In Road to the FIFA World Cup players can choose between any of the 203 nations and take them all the way through the tournament with up to 32 players locally engaging in the tourney (assuming that’s system-linked). As you progress, you will receive tournament updates from EA Sports Talk Radio, featuring Ian Darke and Andy Goldstein, or Roger Bennett and Michael Davies (Men in Blazers), with over 50 hours of recorded content that’s guaranteed to keep you up-to-date on proceedings. And then there’s the online component, Road to Rio De Janeiro, which allows players the opportunity to win their way across Brazil’s 12 host cities.

For those who wish to pre-order the title, you can do so here to net (subtle, but genius) exclusive game content including new celebrations, historic adidas game balls, and more. Check out the reveal trailer and screenshot gallery below.

Madman Films Release The Raid 2 Sundance Premiere Highlights

The-Raid-2-Still-01
Don’t mess with Hammer Girl.

The Raid 2 has been enjoying a great, early critical reception during its festival circuit run (holds a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with an average score of 8/10). It was an Official Selection at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, and now Madman Films has shared highlights from its Sundance Premiere.

The video – which you will find embedded at the bottom of this article – includes snippets on interviews with the director Gareth Evans, as well as some humorous moments from the on-stage Q&A, which saw the actors downplay their injuries on set. At one point, Iko Uwais had a concussion scare, but thankfully was cleared and able to continue shooting. I absolutely loved the first’s brutal, yet skillful action, choreography and directing. The Raid truly, single-handedly restored interest in the martial arts action genre. And apparently, with a 7-minute knife fight finale to look forward to, that means I can hardly wait until The Raid 2‘s Australian release on March 28.

GIGANTIC ARMY Review

GIGANTIC ARMY
Developer: ASTRO PORT
Publisher: Nyu Media
Platforms: PC (Reviewed)
Release Date: February 5, 2014
Price: $5.99/£3.99 – Available Here

Overview
With a heavy influence from 16-bit shooters like Cybernator and Metal Warriors, the three-man team at ASTRO PORT set out to capture their nostalgia and share it with the world. With other 16-bit mech shooter ARMED SEVEN under their belt, the team seems to be picking up steam. How does the game hold up though? Should it be huge or a scrap iron?

gigantic-army-screenshot-02-600x338

Story
It’s the 21st century. Earth is at war with a race of hostile aliens known as Ramulons. The forces of earth have finally pushed the front lines back to the planet of Ramulon itself, and now its time for you and your mechanized robot, the ‘GMR-34 SALADIN’, to deliver the final blow and end the war. Across ravaged cities, through underground caverns, and beyond, you’ll have to take the fight to the Ramulons or die trying.

gigantic-army-screenshot-06

Gameplay
Fans of old-school mech shooters like Metal Warriors will get a great sense of nostalgia from GIGANTIC ARMY. The look and feel will cater to the small kid that sat in front of your TV with the SNES on every Saturday morning, watching pixelated explosion with sheer joy.

The controls feel a little off-putting when you first get to try them out. Players used to WASD controls are going to feel backward by default. The arrow keys control your movement and gun angle, and you fire, jump, shield yourself, and use your special weapons with Z, X, C, and V, accordingly. It’s a bit jarring at first, but once you get the feel of it you’ll be fine. If it’s too much to overcome, though, you can customize your controls however you want.

gigantic-army-screenshot-04-600x338

Apart from the controls, the game feels great. When you first fire up the game, you select from one of three primary weapons and one of three special weapons. Each behaves substantially different, giving you a handful of loadouts to replay the game with.

Maneuvering around the environment feels a little slow and plodding, just like a mech game should. It’s never so slow you become bored, but with a time limit that imposes a serious threat to your livelihood, you’ll want to get a move on between battles. To that effect, you’re given a dash to move on quickly or evade enemy attacks, and you can hover for a short time after jumping. It all comes together to present a game that genuinely feels like you’re piloting a large, powerful beast of a machine, and it feels satisfying.

gigantic-army-screenshot-05

The game isn’t terribly long. There are only six stages, each taking a few minutes to work through. To its credit, though, each stage is well designed and visually distinct, bringing their own feel and enemies for a properly varied game. There are four different difficulties, guaranteed to let you pick the challenge that’s right for you. The game also has around a dozen fun, unique bosses that give the game a great sense of variety and flavor.

Visuals & Audio
GIGANTIC ARMY looks as good as any 16-bit game could have. The sprites are bright and well animated, levels and enemies present great variety in design and color palette, and the animation is fluid and well paced. Tearing through a war-torn city, fighting against a giant, crab-like machination on one stage, taking to enemies in a series of caverns, and fighting against Gundam-like enemies on a moving airplane are just a few of the exciting stages and bosses. The game has a simple look by today’s standards, but GIGANTIC ARMY is fun and satisfying to see in action.

gigantic-army-screenshot-03

In my mind, the sound design is easily GIGANTIC ARMY‘s biggest weakness. The sounds of gunfire and explosions are solid enough, but there’s no noticeable soundtrack you’ll want to come back to. I never caught myself tapping my foot to anything in the game. On top of that, the options to turn the volume down work for some of the sounds, but the others are almost unbearably loud despite that.

Overall
Overall, GIGANTIC ARMY is a satisfying retro mech shooter. The level design is well thought out and looks different from one to another, staying interesting throughout the game. Boss encounters also present wide variety and fun challenge. The look and feel are right at home with some of the best 16-bit shooters around. The sound design feels a bit lacking, which is a shame since so many old school games are known for their classic tracks. I would also have loved for there to be more here. Six levels just feels like it’s over too quickly. Though the romp is fairly short, it’s a fun and explosive ride that retro fans will surely enjoy.
