Lionel Messi ‘Feels the Game’ in FIFA 15 Ad Campaign

FIFA-15-Messi-Promo-01

EA has launched their ‘Feel the Game’ ad campaign for EA Sports FIFA 15, with Lionel Messi front and center. In particular, a new short film created by Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam shows just how closely players will feel the emotion on the pitch.

You can check out the video embedded at the bottom of this article. It will run on various TV channels and networks globally from today. Specifically, the video depicts players taking on an in-game, first person perspective with just the television screen separating them from the action (manifests as an odd fishbowl-like camera effect). FIFA 15 launches on September 25 for virtually all platforms. The demo is available to play right now!

Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire New Trailer and Details

team-magma-team-aqua-pokemon-art-01

After our recent coverage of the leaked Coro Coro Pokemon Mega Evolutions, more news has surfaced regarding the Legendary Pokemon within the game alongside some other interesting details and a brand new trailer. First off, it was confirmed Rayquaza will be appearing in the game as he comes down to break up the fight between Kyogre and Groudon and you will be able to catch him. It is also implied that he will also be receiving some sort of Mega Evolution, most likely in the form of Primal Reversion as is the case with the two cover legendaries.

groudon-size-chart-promo-pokemon-01

Speaking of the two legendaries, we now have some more details about their attacks and Primal forms abilities. Primal Groudon gains the Desolate Land Ability, which changes the weather condition to extremely harsh sunlight. Opponents cannot change the weather condition during extremely harsh sunlight, meaning moves like Rain Dance, Sunny Day, Sandstorm, and Hail will fail. As a huge bonus to Groudon, water attacks will be completely unusable, nullifying his biggest weakness especially as he gains the Fire type when he undergoes Primal Reversion. Groudon can unleash a move unique to it alone, Precipice Blades, a powerful attack that can hit multiple opponents with an upward surge of sharp rocks. Primal Groudon also puts on A LOT of weight, smashing the heaviest Pokemon ever record (which was previously held by normal Groudon) at 2,204.4 pounds!

kyogre-size-chart-promo-pokemon-01

Primal Kyogre’s exclusive Ability is Primordial Sea, which changes the weather condition to an oppressive heavy rain. As with extremely harsh sunlight, opponents cannot change the weather condition during heavy rain. The Abilities Drizzle, Drought, Sand Stream, and Snow Warning will fail to activate, and Fire-type attacks become ineffective as well. Kyogre has its own move that only it can use, Origin Pulse, an attack that can slam multiple opponents with water massed into ballistic orbs. Not to be outdone by Groudon’s mass change, Kyogre’s body also doubles in size. Interestingly, both Primal Pokemon’s weather abilities will only be in effect while that Pokemon is out in battle and will fade when they are switched out or faint.

More details regarding the game’s story were also divulged. Like the originals, Team Magma wishes to increase the landmass on the planet so humanity can labor to achieve greater evolution and development. Meanwhile, Team Aqua wants to increase the size of the oceans to bring back the rich habitats lost to Pokemon due to human development. Team Aqua believes the ocean is the font of all life, and by restoring it, its members think that they can re-create an ideal home for Pokémon. Team Magma is led by Maxie, who uses a Mega Camerupt in battle with the Mega Glasses. Team Aqua is led by Archie who uses a Mega Sharpedo in battle by using the Mega Anchor.

We also got some news regarding the games compatibility with existing products. Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire will be fully compatible with Pokemon Bank and the Pokemon Global Link page which means we can expect many battle competitions and GTS data from these two new titles. You can also trade between the new titles and Pokemon X & Y.

iPhone 6 Plus Shipments Delayed Outside of U.S.

iPhone-6-Plus-Promo-01

I knew something was up when the Australian Apple iPhone storefront page was not live until about 30 minutes after the planned 5pm pre-order launch on Friday. And don’t get me started on the major telcos and their pathetic handling of what they deemed an “unprecedented demand”.

To the original point, Apple has revealed that massive interest in the iPhone 6 Plus has caused a delay in international shipments of the 5.5 inch smartphone, hence the now estimated October 6-17 shipping date. The “Plus” also sold out over at Telstra despite few customers actually being able to access the buy page for over 90 minutes (what’d they have, 10 phones in stock?!). Optus on the other hand have stated that consumers will have to pop into their local store on September 19 to pre-order their iPhone 6 Plus.

World of Warcraft teams of three are expected to fight their way through an unlimited online talent pool, and reach a 3v3 arena rating of 2,500 ahead of the online elimination bracket. Only the top eight will advance to the offline Hammerstein qualifiers, with the top three moving on to the BlizzCon World Championship.

Dead Rising 3 PC Review

Dead Rising 3
Developer
: Capcom Vancouver
Publisher: Capcom
Platform:  Xbox One, Windows (Reviewed)
Release Date: 5 September 2014
Price: $49.99 USD – Available Here / $89.95 AUD – Available Here

Overview

After spending almost a year as an Xbox One exclusive, Dead Rising 3 has been ported to Windows by Capcom Vancouver. Dead Rising 3: Apocalypse Edition contains the base game and the Untold Stories of Los Perdidos DLC. The port has been retooled with high resolution graphics, game controller support, and Steam integration.

Story

A decade after Dead Rising 2, Nick Ramos’ life as a humble mechanic in Los Perdidos is turned upside down by a zombie outbreak. It appears the Zombrex chips that keep people’s zombie infections in check have malfunctioned and the government is faking their rescue efforts in Los Perdidos. Nick Ramos and his friends are looking for a way out of the city, while possibly bringing the truth behind the events in Los Perdidos with them.

2014-09-05_00001

Dead Rising 3’s plot is like the sequel to a long running summer blockbuster franchise. It will not win any awards at Cannes or any other prestigious film festivals, but it is guaranteed to be an entertaining but  safe bet. Dead Rising 3 does not stray too far from the previous two titles, falling back on the same tropes and plot twists, with some new characters and a fresh coat of paint. The formula still works well, as the main plot line still proves to be enjoyable.

Personally, I felt the best of Dead Rising 3’s writing came out in the small side quests and optional psychopaths. Especially with the psychopaths, the writers let go of any sense of seriousness that had to be maintained in the main plot and just went wild with the writing. The result is a memorable cast of characters that are hilarious, crude, and generally unhinged.

2014-09-07_00001

Gameplay

Dead Rising 3 continues the formula of providing players with a huge variety of everyday objects and weapons to butcher hordes of zombies. Thanks to advances in technology, these hordes have grown from small groups of zombies in a mall found in the original Dead Rising into mobs that will fill entire streets. The combo system has seen expansion and significant change since Dead Rising 2. Long gone are the crafting benches that littered Fortune City. Nick can now squat down and craft combo weapons where ever he pleases, although he can be interrupted by zombies looking to pick a fight with a vulnerable target. The combo weapons have multiple stages, with their ultimate versions requiring six or more items to craft. Additionally, two vehicles can now be welded together to create a variety of combo vehicles that are normally armed to the teeth. For all these combos, Nick will need to acquire blueprints for them by either scavenging the plans around Los Perdidos or levelling up. Some plans are hidden in buildings that are unlocked at a certain point in the story, which will drive completionists a bit crazy.

2014-09-11_00001

I believe Dead Rising 3 takes the combo system in the right direction. Creating combo weapons is no longer a chore of collecting the right items then hauling them to the closest crafting bench, dodging zombies all the way. On the other hand, combo weapons become the main form of damage in Dead Rising 3, making the run of the mill items found scattered around the world more of an emergency fallback plan or an amusing time waster. Mixed with the ability to spawn in any weapon previously equipped in the game at weapon lockers in safe houses, the combo system has rendered all but a small handful of regular weapons obsolete. Some may mourn the change, as part of the series’ charm is the weird and wacky items wielded as weapons, but I feel the strange combos Capcom has dreamed up make up for the loss. The one thing I hope will be addressed in future iterations of the game is the sorting for the weapons blueprints. After a while, there are so many blueprints, it becomes difficult to find specific blueprints without a lot of scrolling around. A sorting or filter function is desperately needed to ease navigation.

2014-09-06_00004

Firearms have also seen a major change in Dead Rising 3. Guns were a precious commodity hoarded for psychopath battles in previous games. I was thrown off when I encountered a light machine gun within the first fifteen minutes of the game. I soon discovered that firearms are liberally scattered through Los Perdidos. They are still a necessity for battling psychopaths, but their higher numbers means pouring points in ranged skills and opening fire on zombie hordes is no longer a huge waste of resources.

The quest objectives are a bit of a mixed bag. The main quests are incredibly fun, with some really neat gameplay mechanics. However, the vast majority of side quests boil down to boring fetch quests. The psychopath battles serve as optional boss battles and are much more enjoyable. I did notice their difficulty levels vary wildly, with some requiring Nick to use all the ammunition in a shotgun to complete, while others required practically the entire inventory. It would have been nice to see some more emphasis on melee combat with the psychopath battles, as most were best tackled with an inventory full of firearms.

2014-09-10_00001

The co-op system has seen some improvement over past titles. Now, matchmaking can now find partners based on personal play styles such as completionist, casual, and hardcore. Though the follower AI has improved compared to previous titles, co-op players make much better partners as the AI followers are still a bit too stupid to be little more than a hindrance that provides a little extra damage on some occasions.

Dead Rising 3 supports both controllers and mouse and keyboard combinations. The controller layout will be instantly familiar to those who have played the previous titles. The keyboard controls are workable, though I feel the game is much better with a controller. I really like the fact the controller and keyboard can be used at the same time, allowing players to use the controller for driving then switching to a mouse and keyboard when using ranged weapons.

2014-09-11_00003

Visuals

The visuals in Dead Rising 3 is an absolute minefield. From a purely visual perspective, the higher resolutions have been good to the game. The Xbox One version only ran at 900p and the PC port supports much higher resolutions. The game is absolutely beautiful, with a well crafted city. There are plenty of different zombies in crowds to ensure the game doesn’t feel like an attack of the zombie clones. Capcom Vancouver has gone to great lengths to provide lots of visual options to fine tune the graphics.

But that’s where things get messy. Whether you want to blame things on poor optimization or simply a really taxing game, Dead Rising 3 does not run well. The system requirements are high, but even then the game suffers from serious frame rate dips from the most powerful of systems. The game is locked at 30 FPS, but can be uncapped with some tweaking with the system files. Personally I found the game performed worse with the frame rate cap removed. Frame rates absolutely tank during cut scenes, resulting in a jittery performance. I run an Nvidia GTX 670 on my test rig and I was forced to downgrade to an older driver due to random crashes that made the game practically unplayable with a crash every five to fifteen minutes. Dead Rising 3 is in desperate need of fine tuning, tweaking, and patching.

2014-09-11_00005

Audio

Dead Rising 3 lives up to its big name status, providing an AAA audio experience. The voice acting is top notch. The soundtrack is moody and tense with a nice industrial flair. Capcom Vancouver does a great job of making sure the right tracks kick in just at the right time. The sound effects have also received a good deal of attention. I’m really splitting hairs with this minor complaint, but I do feel that the sound effects used for gunfire could use a little extra oomph.

2014-09-11_00007

Overall

Dead Rising 3 is a great game crippled by a poor port job. The game won’t win any new fans to the series, but anyone who liked the previous titles will find Dead Rising 3 is an excellent addition to the series. General frame rate issues and system requirements aside, the port is desperately in need of patching. There are still rampant issues with crashing and the frame rate dips during cut scenes are unforgivable, even if they can be somewhat addressed with some patience and tweaking. If Capcom is willing to put in the effort to address the issues, Dead Rising 3 is an incredibly fun title that will be a must buy for many PC gamers.

The Sims 4 Review

the-sims-4-boxart-01

The Sims 4
Developer: Maxis
Publisher: EA
Platforms: PC (Reviewed)
Release Date: Out Now
Price: $89.95 – Available Here

Overview

The Sims has been a mainstay of PC gaming since 2000 and with every new iteration, fans are always dying to see how their favourite people-sim has improved. 14 years after the original game launched and we finally have The Sims 4, the newest and brightest installment to date. The Sims 4 manages to keep many of the game’s key components but also goes the extra mile and adds some new features that help streamline the whole game and make it more accessible to new players. While these additions make Sims smarter and world building easier, the result is a large chunk of the franchise’s charm and its ability to engage the player.

the-sims-4-screenshot-01

Gameplay

After thinking about this for quite some time, the best way I can come up with to describe the Sims 4 in a nutshell is that it is a streamlined version of the Sims experience. Although that sounds neat and tidy and it does encompass a lot of the game quite nicely it still only scratches the surface. The Sims 4 is all about the interactions between the game’s titular characters, and some of the more integral parts of the franchise have been pushed back a little bit to accomodate. The game’s core elements are still here, make Sims, build houses, and control the Sims in their-day to day lives including looking for work and navigating the dating pool. The new emotions and whims system makes the Sims feel more alive as characters and create entirely new experiences for players old and new.

I have spoken my praises for the new Create-A-Sim in the past, and after sitting down with it for a considerable amount of time (both through The Sims 4, and the CAS Demo that was released a few weeks ago) I can say that many of these praises still ring true. The Sims 4 has done away with the old “sliders and colour wheel” method of designing your virtual avatars, instead letting you sculpt and pull at their face and body like an artist working his clay. Want fatter cheeks? Then pull and stretch them out. Need a thinner neck? Do the same.

the-sims-4-screenshot-03

You can adjust just about everything on your Sim until you create near-perfect likenesses of yourself, your friends, favourite fictional characters or just some random person you thought up on the spot. However, since it is such a departure from the previous method, players may find themselves needing to learn the skills to crafting the perfect Sim. I’m not ashamed to admit that it took me more than a few hours with the CAS to properly learn the ins and outs and not make Sims that looked like they got the short-end of the genetic stick.

There has also been a massive change to the way that you build the properties this time around. While you can stick to the tried and true method of drawing your walls and then painting in floors, you now have the option to build entire rooms at once. This is an important distinction because when applying wallpaper, floor tiles or even exterior trim the game will check rooms instead of entire buildings. You can shape and resize rooms as you are building, as well as being able to pick up and move the entire house all in one big block. In many ways the new system is leagues more user-friendly and kind to mistakes than past games, but it isn’t without its faults.

The first problem I encountered was the fact that the game would often arbitrarily cock-up and not recognise a room as being complete. This had multiple negative implications; firstly, and most annoyingly if I went to cover the entire room in a wallpaper, it would either just not include certain wall segments or for some reason paint the exterior at the same time. It is a minor inconvenience for sure but after it happening four, five or even six times over the course of a half-hour build session it became enough to make me want to pull my hair out (the problem was even worse when I was applying exterior trim to a building, only to find certain areas inside the house getting the same trim). Building second stories is almost as much of a nightmare.

the-sims-4-screenshot-05

Previously you were able to just start painting floor down after you had put in a staircase. Now you are required to build a “room” and have the game put in a floor before you could do any kind of building or decorating. So many times I had to build walls just for the game to decide to put a floor down, and then delete the walls because all I wanted to make was a little balcony. All of these problems do seem to disappear if you build the rooms independently of one another, and the game does allow for that but it is frustrating to almost have to.

The Sims has always been a franchise that game the player total control over what, when, where and why they wanted to do things. If you only wanted to build celebrity Sims then you could do that. Want to be an architect, then the world is your oyster. While all of these are still very much a part of The Sims 4 experience, the game now has a very strong focus: interactions between Sims. Maxis had added a brand new layer to the Sims, and that is their emotions. The game boasts more than a dozen different emotions that can be triggered through a combination of your Sims traits, and through in-game events. Should your Sim try a pick-up line at the club and be rebuffed, then they might find themselves suffering from a serious case of embarrassment. These emotions provide unique dialogue and interaction options with other Sims and objects in the game (like embarassed Sims can use their bed to “Hide from everyone” or angry Sims can  “Take an angry poop“). Emotions really do make the Sims feel smarter and more alive than previous installments, and the simple act of trying to rebound from an angry encounter can provide more laughs than it ought-to.

the-sims-4-screenshot-04

Another key addition to the franchise is that finally Sims can multitask. Never again do you have to decide whether your Sim wants to eat a grilled cheese sandwich or watch TV, because they can do it at the same time! A whole tonne of things can be multitasked together, like playing on a computer and talking to a group of people all at the same time. These multitasking and group activities offer a whole new level of depth to the game that we haven’t seen before.

For all its new features, The Sims 4 does at times feel very wanting, barren and downright lifeless. Some features that fans had grown to love, like pools, and the infamous Create-A-Style have been removed to make way for the new emotions and it leaves the player with less of a feeling of freedom and god-hood, and more like a real-like people-simulator. For some people, this may be exactly what they are looking for but I have always enjoyed that freedom that has longtime been a part of the series, and having it taken away has left a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth.

the-sims-4-screenshot-08

Visuals & Audio

The Sims’ visual and auditory style has long-since been its trademark. You can tell from miles away if a screenshot comes from a Sims game and for good reason: it works for the franchise. This time around, the game keeps its trademark art-styling but goes for a slightly more animated look. It almost feels like the art direction was taken from The Sims 2 and expanded upon from there.

the-sims-4-screenshot-07

It should also be noted that due to some of the changes in visual styling, and the way the game operates (namely by not having an open world, or dynamic backdrops) The Sims 4 can run on virtually any windows machine from the past decade. No matter how old and clunky your laptop is, you can probably run the game on its lowest settings with little to no drama. However, as with all PC games – there is a STARK contrast between the lowest and the highest settings. At Ultra, the game offers amazing reflections in mirrors and windows, as well as higher-textures for the world and its inhabitants.

As with the visuals, The Sims has an audio style that is uniquely its own. From the artificial “Simlish” Language to the quaint and melodic soundtrack, the game certainly sounds like a Sims title. The soundtrack is particularly great, providing a relaxing atmosphere for your leisurely play experience.

the-sims-4-screenshot-06
Quite a bit of difference between Ultra and Low settings, but regardless just about any computer can run The Sims 4

Overall

I can see where Maxis was heading with their vision for The Sims 4. The game is more streamlined, more accessible and more welcoming but all of this has come at the cost of a fair bit of its charm. The game has shifted its focus primarily to the interactions between the Sims, and while this is a fine direction for the series to take it has resulted in more than a couple key features being dropped as collateral damage. As a base game, Sims 4 has its charm but has left me wanting more… Which I guess is a good thing considering the Sims franchise is built heavily on its DLC and Expansion Packs. Without a doubt expansions will make this game explode to life and become the title that it is truly meant to be. In the mean time, The Sims 4 is a fun way to kill more than a few houurs but for all its charm it lacks serious substance.

Yusuku Urameshi was a tough teen delinquent until one selfless act changed his life…by ending it. When he died saving a little kid from a speeding car, the afterlife didn’t know what to do with him, so it gave him a second chance at life. Now, Yusuke is a ghost with a mission, performing good deeds at the beshest of Botan, the spirit guide of the dead, and Koenma, her pacifier-sucking boss from the “other side.” But what strange things await him on the borderline between life and death?
