Jaco the Galactic Patrolman Review

Jaco the Galactic Patrolman
Author: Akira Toriyama
Artist: Akira Toriyama
Publisher: Viz Media
Release Date: January 6, 2015
Price: $9.99 – Available Here

Overview
Akira Toriyama is a name that almost every anime and manga fan knows. With his manga Dragon Ball he managed to create a series that to this day remains one of the most recognized anime in the West with Dragon Ball Z. While he has long since finished the Dragon Ball manga, he hasn’t stopped writing small stories and in 2013 he wrote Jaco the Galactic Patrolman, a series that takes place in the world of Dragon Ball. Viz has collected the entirety of Jaco the Galactic Patrolman in one volume and now that it has been released, is this a story worth reading?

Story
The Galactic Police have detected an alien pod being sent to the planet Earth and due to the Earth’s low level of technology and strength; they have dispatched Jaco to the planet to put a stop to the alien once it arrives. Unfortunately, Jaco ends up crash landing near an island where only the elderly scientist Omori resides. Omori hates humanity after the loss of his wife and lives isolated on the island where he previously studied a way to control time.

After realizing that Jaco is indeed an alien sent to protect the Earth, Omori agrees to help repair his damaged space ship only to find that an extremely expensive metal may be required to power the ship. Shortly after this, the government informs Omori that he will have to vacate the island within a week due so that they can build a luxury hotel for politicians on the land. With only a week to fix Jaco’s spaceship and also find a way to stay on his island, various hijinks ensue such as defeating a giant man-eating shark, saving a young girl named Tights, and more.

Jaco the Galactic Patrolman really doesn’t have an extremely driven storyline as it simply coasts from gag to gag as various progress is made on Jaco’s ship and the reader sees the various misunderstandings that come from Jaco not understanding the way life works on Earth and the reactions from Omori and Tights at Jaco’s super strength and advanced technology. There are also a number of slapstick moments but as mentioned before most of the humor comes from misunderstandings and the way everyone reacts to Jaco.

This type of soft humor is unfortunately rather bland as it quickly runs its course over the first few chapters, but it works well for the type of story that is being told and despite there not being an actual drive to the story, every event is connected well enough to tell a complete and satisfying story. It is worth noting that there is very little action found within Jaco the Galactic Patrolman since Jaco is strong enough to defeat standard humans with one blow and wields a powerful blaster but doesn’t actually face any opposition.

It is worth noting that while it is not essential to know about the Dragon Ball manga or anime or even Dragon Ball Z to get the most out of Jaco the Galactic Patrolman, there are a number of events that take place within this volume that many fans of Dragon Ball will get a kick out of, especially since there is much more to Tights than meets the eye and the origin of the alien that Jaco is initially sent to scout will be very familiar to such readers.

Artwork
Those familiar with Akira Toriyama’s art style will know exactly what to expect in Jaco the Galactic Patrolman as his designs remain similar to what is found in Dragon Ball. While Jaco is a very simple character to design and has a unique look, the other characters, especially Omori and Tights, are very familiar looking as if they were taken directly from the main series. Even with the familiarity of certain designs, the characters all have expressive faces, which is essential for the amount of humor that depends on their reactions.

Extra Content
Now the standard story features character information between chapters, including information about characters that show up for all of only a few panels. Where the real bonus in Jaco the Galactic Patrolman is found is at the end. Once the main story ends a complete bonus chapter exploring the origins of Goku is included in this release.

In this bonus chapter we are introduced to a different scenario where Burdock, hearing that Freiza is planning on destroying the planet Vegeta to put a stop to the Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan God rumors, informs his wife and Goku’s Mother Gin-ne, that they must send their son away in order to keep him safe. This extra is a great addition, even if it moves away from what most Dragon Ball fans know of Burdock’s intentions.

Overall
Jaco the Galactic Patrolman doesn’t feel like anything new or different for Toriyama but it does tell a solid satisfying story that is fairly funny thanks to the way that he seems to channel his comedic sense found in early chapters of Dragon Ball into this series. Jaco the Galactic Patrolman may be a bigger series for Dragon Ball fans who will enjoy the various references and character cameos immensely. As for those who aren’t familiar with his works, they will still find a simple and enjoyable story all contained in a single volume.

New Nintendo Direct Set to take Place this Wednesday 14th of Jan 2015

nintendo-direct-banner-01

Very interesting. Nintendo have plans for a brand new Nintendo Direct – the first for 2015 this Wednesday, January 14th. This event will be covering Wii U and 3DS titles coming out this Spring. Now, aside from Kirby, Code Name: S.T.E.A.M., and the general eShop titles, I do expect to see some new reveals as well.

One would imagine The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D will receive a release date, along with the “New” 3DS model that waited until the holiday rush was over to hit the U.S.. You can watch at the link below, and tune back in for announcement coverage later that day.

Tron-Inspired Puzzler Hyphen Now Greenlit by Valve

hyphen-logo-01

Indie developer FarSpace Studios has announced that their arcade puzzle game Hyphen has been greenlit by Steam for release. While the very slick Tron-inspired game has been out for a while on other stores, Steam is most likely to be the one to give it a widespread release.

The title involves moving a constantly spinning though tight spaces, attempting to get through the maps in the best time. This gives Hyphen a very arcade-style feel. Hyphen has 36 levels and 2 mini-games to offer players a challenge.

hyphen-screen-shot-05

While the game looks stunning, and the theming is very 1980’s inspired, I can’t help but think of another recent indie title with a very similar mechanic. Roundabout was done in a very different style, focusing on open world exploration and a cheesy story, but the major game mechanic seems nearly identical.

However, Hyphen looks to be it’s own experience, and hopefully this Steam launch will help FarSpace to grow. Hyphen will be available on Steam soon, check out the Greenlight page here.

Satellite Reign Interview with Chris Conte and Dean Ferguson

5-lives-studios-staff-01

Satellite Reign is a new indie, strategy game by 5 Lives Studios which aims to be the spiritual successor to the old (and much loved) Syndicate franchise. I recently scoped out Satellite Reign as a title to look out for in the new year for all the high-tech/low-lives amongst you. As luck would have it, a fixer was able to set a meet up between myself, Chris Conte, and Dean Ferguson. After fulfilling my end of the bargain, I jumped into a secure node and got to extracting as much information as I could out of my two targets…

Belated congratulations on your successful kickstarter and your recent pre-alpha release of the game on Steam early access.

Thanks. 🙂

What has the experience been like with developing the game through a crowdfunding model in comparison to a publisher-funded model?

It has been overwhelmingly positive to be honest, we have a direct line to the end user which is priceless in our industry.  It has also been very humbling to have so many people share our belief in what we are doing. Probably the biggest difference is just the freedom to take risks and explore things we would never have done if a publisher had veto power.

Satellite-Reign-Concept-Art-01

Freedom, sweet freedom. From what I’ve seen so far, the look and feel of the city nails a gritty and neon cyberpunk aesthetic. What influences did you have in designing the city?

So much, there is an immense body of work in the Cyberpunk style for us to draw from.  Our biggest influence for the city visually was probably Bladerunner.

It definitely comes through. The area of the city that’s in the current build is huge. How big a city have you got planned for the final product? What process did you guys go through to plan out the cityscape?

The currently released district is one of 4, each is roughly the same size…so its a very large city.

The planning stages were largely handled by Chris (designer) and Brent (environment artist), they blocked out the city in what we our ‘call white boxing’ phase.  This is where they lay down basic forms to denote specific areas of game-play/art. At this rough stage it is all about getting the basic flow and game play mechanics in and tested before we do anything long term such as art passes.  It allows us to play the game and see how the design is working and make changes quickly if needed.

There appear to be plenty of law enforcement and corporate security type enemies in the current build of the map, what other enemy types do you have in store for the final game? Are there plans to have other, competing syndicates with their own agents trying to take over the city?

We have 3 unique factions, each control certain areas in the city.  They aren’t actively trying to take over the city from each other but they have no love for your team.  We also have larger more imposing mech units on the way.

Satellite-Reign-Concept-Art-02

The end goal Satellite Reign is to take control of the city for your own nefarious purposes (or so my fixer tells me). To that end, how would the game-play transition from you ‘stickin’ it to the man’ in the early game to ‘being the man’ in the end game?

Your goal isn’t to take control of the city bit by bit, but rather to work your way through the city, building up your team to strike at the heart of the oppressive company, which has a stranglehold on the city. You start with a small team and limited resources, but through stealing, bribing and violent means, you can take your team from lowly cloned agents, into the heavily augmented, fully equipped, battle hardened killing machines you will need to make the final push into the Dracogenics headquarters and gain control of their satellite network.

Ah, well that certainly does sound a lot more cyberpunk. How deep does your simulation of the city go? Are there specific scripted instances for the player to encounter or will all events be the result of emergent game-play?

None of the moment to moment game-play is scripted. We have quests that even themselves have random elements to them where we set up things for the player to do but the enemies they face up against, the routes they take, the rewards you get and the chaos that ensues will be different every time you play.

Satellite-Reign-Concept-Art-03

Cyberpunk fiction generally portray a level of technology which is not too far removed from what can be seen today. Have you been working in a similar manner with your weapon and vehicle designs, or have you drawn upon other avenues of inspiration to create the tech in the game?

A little of both, we wanted to keep out of the realms of full on science fiction where possible, but at the same time its all about allowing the player to have fun so if a weapon or item is a little far fetched but really cool to use then that is fine with us.

Cool. Thanks for your time guys but I’ve got to cut the line as the trace is getting clos-

While you wait for a flash-cloned replacement writer to finish our preview of the current build of Satellite Reign, you can check out the game’s website here or jack into the game yourself through Steam.
