nintendo-world-championships-photo-11

Ahh Nintendo, this is why we love you. The Nintendo World Championships 2015 kicked off Nintendo’s E3 campaign in a huge way, drawing in a nice live crowd and nearly 120,000 viewers on YouTube. An eight round celebration of new games and old games alike with gaming celebrities, the spirit of competition and even some fantastic surprise announcements such as the release of the first translated Mother game as Earthbound Beginnings that is available from today on the Wii U e-Shop.

16 competitors took the stage in 8 rounds with each game being unannounced until it was time to actually play. Players progressed through the tournament using the above format. Of the 16 competitors, 8 were well known gamers from the community with the other 8 winning the right to compete by succeeding at various Best Buy competitions that took place across the United States. The 8 celebrity players were:

  • Sinister1 (speedrunner)
  • Cosmo (speedrunner)
  • TheMexicanRunner (NES completionist)
  • Bananas (speedrunner)
  • Essentia (speedrunner)
  • Trihex (speedrunner)
  • Jovenshire (Smosh Games)
  • Arin (Game Grumps).

djWHEAT, Andre (Black Nerd Comendy), and Justin Flynn commentated most of the tournament with a few special guests appearing for some games such as D1 for Super Smash Bros. Wii U or djWheat’s nine year old son for Splatoon. Kevin Pereira hosted the evening. A job well done to all those commentating and hosting as everything felt insightful and informative. As a whole the event ran very smoothly.

Now for the games which of course are the true stars of the show. The 8 games played and which round they were played in with winning conditions included:

  • Stage 1 – Splatoon (4 on 4 turf war, best of 3 format.  Winning teams advanced while the two losing teams played another match to see which four would be sent to the underground elimination rounds.)
  • Stage 1 Underground Elimination Round – The Legend of Zelda (Speed run to beat the Eagle temple in the quickest time, defeat Aquamentus the Dragon and retrieve the Tri Force.)
  • Stage 2 – Blast Ball – (First to 3 or whoever was leading at the end of 5 minutes). Blast Ball in an entirely new game for the 3DS where players in mech suits essentially get on teams of 3 and try to get a big ball into their teams goal. It’s essentially space soccer in mechs but it looks really fun.
  • Stage 2 Underground Elimination Round – Super Metroid – (Speed run to see who can defeat Mother Brain and escape Planet Zebes on Samus’s ship first).
  • Stage 3 – Mario Kart 8 – (Two separate rounds with four racers each. 3 track custom cup at 200CC with Baby Park, Animal Crossing and Big Blue tracks. Top two from each group go through.)
  • Stage 3 Underground Elimination Round – Balloon Fight (Highest score after 3 minutes wins and returns to main draw).
  • Stage 4 – Super Smash Bros. Wii U (Two rounds with all four remaining players in a 6 minute timed match free for all. Top two over both rounds advance into the final). People might remember Reggie laid down a challenge to last years Super Smash Bros. Invitational winner HungryBox that he would kick his ass next year after training for a year on Super Smash Bros. 3DS. Well that exhibition match happened and unfortunately Reggie got completely dominated. He did however get some revenge with an epic comeback after being slandered by HungryBox, saying that he spends 16 hours a day running a company while HungryBox spent 16 hours a day playing smash. Burn! Reggie played as Ryu and HBox Jigglypuff for the record.
  • Stage 5 Grand Final – Super Mario Maker. It seems Mario Maker has been renamed Super Mario Maker and the guys over at the Nintendo Treehouse have put together four incredibly challenging Mario courses for the two finalists to navigate. Who ever was able to get the furthest in each of the first three courses gained a 15 second advantage for the fourth and final course.

After all was said and done, Best Buy Competition winner John Numbers took out the event after Cosmo struggled in the ridiculously difficult final course of Super Mario Maker, with John Numbers performing some incredible platforming feats with clutch wall jumps, ducks and impressively timed stomps. Both finalists received a signed New Nintendo 3DS XL from none other than special guests Shigeru Miyamoto himself and John Numbers got to hold up his shiny Nintendo World Championship 2015 trophy up high.

It was a great event full of announcements, nostalgia, high tension and victory and I for one am hoping the Nintendo World Championships makes a return next year. If you have a spare 4 hours the entire event is embedded below for your viewing pleasure or you can just skip to the good bits. I recommend watching the Grand Final at the least as those courses were truly horrific and pictured some truly epic platforming feats.

Capsule Computers Podcast Episode 100 – Its Like Riding a Bike

CC-Unplugged-Main-Logo

I blame Ebola. After a 363 day break, CC Unplugged is BACK! So what happened? Well, nothing really – but Dustin Spencer and Travis Bruno have reunited to make a sad attempt to explain themselves in the 100th episode. 100 is usually a celebration, but when you have E3 just a day away and a lot to talk about (like an entire year of news), then you can guess why the party hats were replaced by suits for the occasion. During this ep, we speak about E3, share predictions, get distracted easily, and talk about video games for over an hour – so tune in for the fun.

Grab the hopes and dreams of Sonic Boom 2, tell your friends, and prepare to get UNPLUGGED!

New Amiibos Announced for September; 8-bit Mario and Animal Crossing Amiibos Leaked

amiibo-september-wave-01

Earlier today Nintendo announced a new set of Amiibos that will be hitting stores in September. The first set of Amiibos happen to be three different Mii Fighters, one for each class, while the second set features mostly classic Nintendo icons.

These Amiibos happen to be R.O.B., Duck Hunt, Mr. Game & Watch (who will have changeable silhouettes), and the odd bird out Falco. It is worth noting that at the time of the announcement, Masahiro Sakurai did say that every Super Smash Bros. fighter will be given their own Amiibo, including Roy, Ryu, Lucas, and Mewtwo.

That wasn’t all the news Nintendo had for Amiibo lovers though. Shortly after the announcement of the aforementioned Amiibos, Nintendo of Europe’s Spanish section made the mistake of leaking an image that contained a number of un-announced figures. This includes an 8-bit Mario, Animal Crossing figures, and Animal Crossing cards.

Of course since this was simply a leaked image, no details about these figurines and the games they will be used for were revealed, though the 8-bit Mario is likely for Mario Maker while we will have to wait and see regarding the Animal Crossing ones.

Earthbound Beginnings to be Released Today on Wii U Virtual Console

EarthBound-Beginnings-logo

When the original Earthbound was released on the Wii U Virtual Console many people saw it as a chance to show just how much they wanted to see more of the series in the West. Well today Nintendo rewarded these fans by announcing that they are indeed localizing another Earthbound game, although it isn’t Mother 3 like most people have been asking for.

Instead they are localizing the original Mother title under the name Earthbound Beginnings which is still some great news. To go along with this announcement the company released an English trailer for the game and by the way, it will be available for purchase tonight at 9PM EST though it is worth noting that no price was revealed at the time of the announcement.

Update: Earthbound Beginnings is now available for download on the Wii U and is priced at $6.99 in North America.

Transformers: Devastation Announcement Leaked

transformers-devastation-screenshot- (6)

With E3 this year being something of a boat that springs a new leak every few hours, it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that another leak has occurred in the form of Transformers: Devastation. First found by Pure Xbox, and later confirmed by a now removed Best Buy Canada listing, Transformers: Devastation is being developed by Platinum Games and will feature cel-shaded designs of the classic Transformers characters.

The listing has also confirmed that Transformers: Devastation will be released on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 with a placeholder date of October 6, 2015. Players will be able to select from five difficulty levels and play as Optimus Prime, Bubblebee, Sideswipe, Wheeljack, and Grimlock as they face off against the Decepticons in action packed gameplay that allows for instant robot to vehicle attacks, “slam downs” counterattacks, and infinite combos for a unique combat system.

Nitroplus Blasterz: Heroines Infinite Duel Heads to North America this Winter

Nitroplus-Blasterz-screenshot- (3)

Despite only just being announced for home consoles in Japan last week, XSEED Games has already announced that they will be releasing Nitroplus Blasterz: Heroines Infinite Duel in North America sometime this winter for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3. Developed by Examu, the title features numerous playable heroines from Nitroplus’ collection of IPs as well as a number of fighters that have yet to be revealed for the home release.

It is worth noting that the announcement did tease that some of the fighters “Western audiences are sure to find enticing” though XSEED did not go further than that. That being said, it has already been announced that Super Sonico will now be a playable character instead of a support character and that Homura from Senran Kagura will also be included as a fighter.

Nitroplus-Blasterz-screenshot- (1)

For those that haven’t been following the game, Nitroplus Blasterz: Heroines Infinite Duel allows players to select a main character as well as two partner characters to head into “fast and flashy combat” with “easy-to-execute” combos and plenty of cinematic cut-in attacks. When launched the title will support online cross-play between the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game.

Ikki Introduced in Latest Amnesia: Memories Screenshots

amnesia-memories-ikki-screenshot- (8)

A little over a week ago Idea Factory International introduced us to Kent, one of Amnesia: Memories‘ potential love interests and now they have released a new batch of screenshots for the title that focus on introducing Ikki this time around.

Ikki is described as the “playboy with untold depths” that may come off as callous but if you happen to play your cards right as the Heroine he might have eyes only for you. Currently Amnesia: Memories is set to be released for the PS Vita in North America and Europe sometime this August while the PC version will be released on Steam sometime later.

The Legend of Legacy Announced for North American Release

The-Legend-of-Legacy-logo

Atlus USA has announced that they will be releasing FuRyu’s 3DS RPG The Legend of Legacy in North America and South America sometime this fall. The title will be available at retail as well as a digital download for $39.99. With the minds of the SaGa series and other notable titles behind it, The Legend of Legacy follows the story of seven adventurers, each of which has their own motivation for their journey, traveling to the mysterious island of Avalon with each character having a unique perspective on the story.

While exploring the island, they find a singing stone that causes the party to see phantasms of Avalon’s forgotten history. Featuring a turn based combat system with variosu formations and party roles, the title has been tweaked since the original Japanese release for enhanced gameplay.

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero Looking Great in E3 Trailer

shantae-half-genie-hero-screenshot-036

E3 begins in a a couple of days but rather than getting lost in the flood of announcements, WayForward has opted to release Shantae: Half-Genie Hero E3 trailer a bit early. Originally funded by Kickstarter back in 2013, the developers have been working hard to bring Shantae: Half-Genie Hero to all of the promised platforms and from what this trailer shows, the wait has been worth it.

In the trailer, found below, you’ll find Shantae transforming into various animals, defeat enemies with her hair whip attacks, and of course belly dance. Currently Shantae: Half-Genie Hero does not have a release date but it is set to be launched on the Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, and PC.
