New Gameplay Trailer for Vikings: Wolves of Midgard Released

Kalypso (Urban Empire) released brand new gameplay footage for their upcoming action RPG Vikings: Wolves of Midgard. The trailer shows off a variety of gameplay, from fighting through hordes of small creatures to going toe to toe with giant bosses, and offers a brief glance at the game’s skill system.

Vikings: Wolves of Midgard is a mix of high fantasy and Norse mythology. Players will not only have to defeat mythalogical enemies like the Jotan to survive, but also endure the harsh Scandinavian winters. Progression is two fold: players must use the blood of fallen enemies to pay tribute to the Gods in return for skills and rebuild their village to gain access the artisans to craft equipment.

Viking: Wolves of Midgard is set to launch in early 2017 for PC, Playstation 4, and Xbox One.

PGS Portable Gaming Device/Smartphone Hybrid Recapped – a Busy 2016

It has been a big year for PGS Lab. Their Kickstarter project raised $300,000 before it was cancelled. The development team announced that the cancellation was a result of a legal agreement with a private investment firm. The cancellation coincided with allegations appearing online of the device being vaporware or a scam due to what appeared to be extremely early stage prototypes and misleading advertising. Since the Kickstarter cancellation, the company has been accepting pre-orders for the device through their website and has raised over $800,000; however, the original investment group has backed out of the project due to legal reasons according to PGS Lab. PGS Lab says they are in negotiation with new investors to provide the money for the production of the PGS Hardcore devices. The company says that the $800,000 they have raised is enough to cover the initial production stage, but have opted to not spend the pre-order funds until they are able to release the device entirely. PGS Lab believes the decision is the best path out of respect of the project’s dramatic history so far.

2016 has also been busy for PGS Lab on the development front. The company announced they revamped the design of the slider mechanism to utilize a dual hinged slider that allows the device to either lay completely flat or hinge the main screen at a 25 degree angle. The thumb sticks were also been replaced with improved thumb sticks that no longer telescope out and incorporate the L3 and R3 buttons.

Finally, the a big hurdle for PGS Labs has been crossed. Originally, the device needed to be rebooted to switch between Android and Windows 10. To allow for users to switch seamlessly between the two OSes, PGS Labs has added a second ARM SoC processor that will also include the LTE module. The second chip will only be available on the PGS Hardcore module. The addition of the second processor will not need additional active cooling, but PGS Labs has upgraded the cooling system anyways with a fan and ribbed heatsink that is rated well over the 4-5W heat that the device is putting out. The design should allow the PGS Hardcore to rely on passive cooling for all but the most intensive tasks.

PGS also announced they have managed to shrink the device to be about the size of an iPhone 6/7 Plus, but thicker. The battery will now have a capacity of 6800 mAh, which should provide 3-6 hours of continuous gaming. The screen has been downgraded to an FHD screen (1920×1080) so it will scale down without artifacts for visually demanding games. The new screen is still an IPS display.

PGS Labs is postponing the release date for the devices due to the extensive hardware modifications they have made. PGS Labs estimates they will begin shipping the PGS Hardcore devices between the first and second quarters of 2017. With all the changes, the PGS Hardcore edition will be priced at $319 USD for pre-orders and $379 USD at launch.

Fire Emblem Direct Dated for January 18th

A new Nintendo Direct has been announced specifically focused on the Fire Emblem series. No further details were given on any official channels. With the very brief CGI trailer (which you can view below) shown in yesterdays Nintendo Switch presentation I honestly wouldn’t expect any news on the newly announced Fire Emblem Warriors especially as Nintendo is excluding it from their 2017 lineup.

What is almost certainly going to be talked about is Fire Emblem mobile which apart from an initial announcement has had no further information divulged on it. A possible new game in the core franchise could also see an announcement as I don’t see the whole Direct focusing on just the mobile game given the generic title of the Direct. The Direct will take place at 2pm Pacific Time on January 18, 2017. That is 9am, January 19th in Melbourne time. Fire Emblem Awakening and Fire Emblem Fates were both magnificent entries in the series, so I hope whatever is announced can live up to the quality of those titles.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Heading to Switch on April 28th

It may miss the launch date but the heavily rumoured port of Mario Kart 8 is indeed real and heading to the Nintendo Switch on April 28. The game is titled Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and builds on everything Mario Kart 8 offered on the Wii U but also add:

  • Inking Boy, Inkling Girl, Bowser Jr., Dry Bones and King Boo as new characters.
  • A completely revamped battle mode that includes the standard Balloon Battle as well as Bob-omb blast from Mario Kart Double Dash. The rules seem to be altered though to be more score based. For example, losing all your balloons in Balloon Battle sees your score cut in half, not instant dismissal from the game.
  • All DLC included.
  • New battle courses including new stages like Urchin Underpass from Splatoon and Battle Stadium. Some classic battle courses are returning such as Luigi’s Mansion from Double Dash and SNES Battle Course 1.

  • A beginner steering mode to help you stay on the track.
  • The ability to hold two items at the same time.
  • Three new vehicles, two inspired by Splatoon.
  • Two new items, Boo, who will steal another players item and the Feather, which will give you a high jump just like in the original game for the SNES.
  • 1080 HD in TV mode.
  • Local multiplayer with up to 8 players. I’m not sure how configurations work for this, if all 8 players need their own Switch or 8 players can make use of 2 Switch systems.

Unfortunately, new race tracks seem to be off the table which is a big missed opportunity because if you don’t care about battle mode and already owned Mario Kart 8, there’s really not much incentive to upgrade here. On the flip side, newcomers will be welcomed with the most content heavy Mario Kart game ever. We also got a look at the gorgeous box art which shows us what Switch game cases will look like.

Check out the screenshots of the new battle mode tracks as well as the accompanying trailer to see the game in action. Be sure to visit our presentation recap for all the new Nintendo Switch news including pricing, release dates and upcoming games.
