Attack on Titan: Ilse’s Journal

Attack on Titan Ilse's Journal-Badge-OVABy now, I’m sure it’s common knowledge that Attack on Titan was awesome. Even outside of the anime community I’ve heard mutterings of people loving the series. Hell, I even know a lot of people who have become interested in the medium because of it. However, the series did miss out a few details from the manga that I hastily read after the final episode dropped that bombshell on us, some minor and some not so minor.A pretty major detail that was left out was the whole of chapter 18.5, entitled simply ‘Ilse’s Journal’.This chapter detailed the sidestory of a member of the recon corps that ran into a particularly odd titan who could speak.

To those who watched the series, you’ll know this is particularly odd because none of the titans in the series speak, even those who they capture. To avoid spoilers I will just say that what it says is amazingly significant later on in the manga and if they ever make a second season, anyone who hasn’t seen this OVA will be left in the dark for a long time. Combine its amazingly interesting story with the art that is just as hauntingly beautiful as in the series and what you’re left with is a brilliant OVA that definitely deserves this award. – James Mapley
