Anime of the Year
Eccentric Family

Eccentric Family-Badge-AOTYWhile there were many blockbuster hits this year, the greatest anime of 2013 was one that went quietly unnoticed by the masses. That anime was The Eccentric Family, a heart-warming tale set within the windy streets of Kyoto revolving around the lives of a family of shape-shifting tanuki. Its a bizarre anime to say the very least and its all the more special for it.

No other anime this year achieved the level of brilliance that Eccentric Family did, let alone make it look as easy as Eccentric Family does. This is a special breed of anime that comes along once in a blue moon. It is quirky, filled with intrigue, frequently uplifting, emotionally powerful, richly detailed, gorgeously animated and imbued with an honest heart and soul.

Much like a hotpot, Eccentric Family slowly but steadily adds in its ingredients piece by piece until it ultimately reaches boiling point and begins to burst at its sides with delectable flavour. What really sets it apart from all of the other anime of 2013 is that in a time where the flavour of the week is brutality and darkness, Eccentric Family brings life, heart, fun and colour. I think that Eccentric Family is best summed up in the words its protagonists live by – What’s fun is good. That is why Eccentric Family is a modern day anime masterpiece and that is why it is our anime of the year for 2013. – Luke Halliday
