Max Payne moves to Brazil

WOW, I cant believe it has been a decade since Remedy and Rockstar games first released Max Payne. So much would have changed in the lives of Maxs diehard fanbase, ( 26yr olds now with jobs and families were then 16yr old carefree kids), its fantastic news to hear that Rockstar have gone to the effort of including the 8 year gap in Maxs life as well. Much has changed in the technology available to developers over this time period especially graphics and physics engines and Rockstar plan to make use of all the advances in Euphoria Physics, particle effects and AI available to them. Judging from the latest screenshots which look beautifully rendered with rich environments, Max has undergone a Bruce Willis type transformation, losing the suave haircut in exchange for a shaven head, and swapping his NYC cop badge for a degenerate seedy life in Brazils Private Security sector.

True to form, Max has delved deeper into substance abuse and darkness, transforming into an alcohol swilling, pillhead, addicted to the painkillers he battled with and energised him in the previous titles. The scope of the enviroment will vastly differ from the constraints of being in one city as Max now has an entire country to potentially explore in his new position protecting the Branco family of Brazil, made up of the 3 brothers Rodrigo, the real estate kingpin, Victor the politician and Marcello the playboy, Fabiana, Rodrigos trophy wife and Giovanna his sister.

There is a heavy emphasis on creating a cinematic style of gameplay combined with natural realism to really immerse the player in Maxs world. This will all be made possible with NaturalMotions Euporia engine which allows developers to add adaptive real time effects rather than predetermined events into gameplay. Maxs general movement and bullet time scenes will no longer be a staged movement, but Max will react to the environment around him, diving hands down to break his fall and responding differently to the environment even if replaying the same scene. Slow motion gunplay and responsive enemies will enhance the games cinematic feel.

Everything we knew and loved about the last Max Payne games is back with a vengeance, from Bullet time and Bulletcam to new approaches and takes on Maxs signature gun toting take down styles. Even the much loved graphic novel exerts have been given the upgrade to a motion based comic book and best of all, James McAffrey is back to lend his voice and appearance to the washed out tough guy. It wasnt so long ago that environments in most games were left unchanged even after being inflicted with heavy gunfire in an intense battle. Well thankfully times are changing and Rockstar games obsessive compulsiveness to detail ensure that every salty sweat bead that drips from Maxs head during a heated encounter is so faithfully recreated you might need to put towels under your tv. Im guessing the same will apply to weapons, characters and most other aspects of the environment.

Extensive motion-capture has been used to truly recreate the movements and behaviour of the various characters Max encounters. Partners and sidekicks of the infamous character will play an important role in his quest for justice and success.

This game looks amazing and is already creating much buzz especially amongst those who played the original titles in our gaming prime. Rockstar games look like they are onto another winner with Max Payne 3 and the world waits with bated breath for any more news.

Microsoft Unbans, Quickly Rebans All Xbox Consoles

Readers would be wise to file everything that follows as a rumor for the time being. According to reports by various users around the internet, Xbox 360 users whose systems had previously been banned from access to Xbox Live would once again be able to connect to the online service. Now, I would take most of this with a grain of salt as Microsoft has not released an official statement so far, but it does seem that many banned users were able to access Xbox Live.

The rumors flying around the hacking and modding scene, such as this forum thread, are that Microsoft was afraid of an attack from hacker “group” Anonymous, which has gained a lot of notoriety (some of it deserved and some rampant speculation) due to the state of the Playstation Network. It was being tossed around that Anonymous threatened the software giant with a similar fate and this mass unbanning was an appeasement for the hacking and modding community.

I think it should be clear to anyone over the age of 13 that this story is complete nonsense, as a billion dollar company is certainly not going to undo console bans which were put in place to stop users from either cheating online or pirating games. It should also be noted that Anonymous are not the hacking wizards that the internet seems to think they are, but instead just a group of online users who were trying to get a message across. It has yet to be seen whether Anonymous had anything to do with the Playstation network downtime and it is looking less and less likely with each update from Sony. It is even more unlikely that Microsoft would bow to the threats of an anonymous group of the same kind of hackers it deals with daily.

As evidence that Xbox 360 consoles all over the world weren’t unbanned as some sort of pacifier to the hacking community, all previously banned 360’s are now once again completely blocked from Xbox Live. It seems like the most likely explanation is that someone at Microsoft made a mistake which was then quickly corrected. The modders were at the height of proclaiming that Microsoft was running scared from Anonymous and celebrating their renewed ability to cheat their way to the top of Call of Duty leaderboards when all of a sudden it became apparent how foolish they had all been. I don’t mean to insult everyone who is involved in the hacking and modding community, but users who post comments like, “LOL. There scared!” or “I think microsoft is acting like an 8 year old girl, unbanning xboxs in fear of them being hacked because what happened to Sony! I trololol at Microsoft and Sony.” (actual comments) make themselves seem like impudent children.

I hope that this fiasco will help to reduce the amount of talk about Anonymous and hackers fighting back against corporate greed that has been all the rage the last few weeks. Anonymous did not hack the PSN, users can not threaten corporations, and if your Xbox was banned then you more than likely deserved. Now can we all please move on? To get an idea of the type of idiots really cool people that were in an uproar over this, check out DJ keemstar’s video, where he brags about having 15 banned consoles.

Tekken 6 Added to Games On Demand

With the recent relases of Mortal Kombat 9 and Super Street Fighter 4 3d, as well as the pending release of Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition, the fighting game community has had its hands pretty full. Gamers who prefer their fighting games to incorporate all three dimensions might be excited to hear that Namco Bandai Europe has recently added Tekken 6 to the Xbox Live Games On Demand service. It seems that things just keep getting better fighting game enthusiasts lately. Truly this is a great time for anyone who grew up in arcade or perhaps just has a competitive streak. Tekken 6 can be download via Xbox Live’s Games on Demand service for $49.95.

Gatling Gears gets a release date and a new trailer

Gatling Gears, the upcoming twin-stick shooter published by Electronic Arts, has finally received an official release date. Gamers can download the game on Xbox Live Arcade on May 12th and on Playstation Network on May 19th. These dates are for Australia and New Zealand, while North America and Europe will get the game one day earlier  although at the same time as the Eastern Hemisphere due to the time-traveling shenanigans of the international date line. The price will be 1200 Microsoft points in all regions and AUS$ 23.95 / NZ$ 29.95.

Along with this announcement, EA have release a teaser trailer for the game which challenges players to “Blow @#!% Up”, which I can only assume means Blow Shit Up, although I’m not sure of the exact transliteration of a percent sign. Other than confusing obscene words for symbols, the trailer also shows off the frantic shooter action that Gatling Gears promises to deliver and a few explosions to top everything off. Really what more can you ask for?

L.A. Noire’s hit-and-run case based on a true, strange story

While the plot of L.A. Noire is a fictional tale following LAPD detective Cole Phelps in post-WWII Los Angeles, the team over at Rockstar have pulled some inspiration for the game from real case files. The “A Marriage Made in Heaven” case for example is based on the real life story of Jay Dee Chitwood. In 1944, Jay Dee was found dead on the streets of Los Angeles. The conclusion of the investigation was that the man had been the unfortunate victim of a hit-and-run accident. Jay Dee’s widow Helen then remarried and you might think this is where Jay Dee’s tale comes to a close.

Two years later, however, a friend of Helen’s inform the LAPD that the now remarried Mrs. Chitwood has stated her late husband wasn’t in an accident at all. She claimed to have actually stabbed Jay Dee Chitwood to death before throwing him into oncoming traffic. Startled by this revelation, the police arrested Helen on suspicion of murder and reopened the case. As if this case weren’t strange enough already, reading over the autopsy reports revealed absolutely no evidence of a stab wound on Jay Dee. It turns out he had indeed been struck by a passing automobile. Helen had made up the stabbing story during a drunken fight with her new husband in order to rile him up and the detectives were able to close the case once more.

Now, I can understand a wife wanting to get under her husband’s skin, but pretending you murdered your previous spouse probably isn’t the best course of action. In any case, Rockstar promises that in the “A Marriage Made in Heaven” case in L.A. Noire players will be treated to even more twists and turns, and that the story might not end the way it did back in 1944. Gamers who hope to fill the shoes of Cole Phelps come May will have quite a bit of intrigue to deal with in the cases of L.A. Noire.

Witcher 2 Combat Walkthrough Explains Weapons, Magic

CD Projekt’s The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is quickly approaching its May 17th release date. The developer has begun releasing walkthrough trailers detailing the various aspects of the upcoming RPG. The first of these videos was released recently, showing off the combat of The Witcher 2 and explaining the player’s choices between magical combat and swordsmanship, as well as touching on alchemical combinations Geralt can produce to prepare for battle or enhance his arsenal.

The game certainly looks to have a pretty solid foundation as an action RPG, striking that perfect balance between strategy and reflex. Hopefully more of the game will be detailed in this type of information trailer in the next few weeks leading up to its release, and if so you can bet we’ll post them right here.

Not every demon is out for your head in latest Shadows of the Damned images

If you’ve been following Shadows of the Damned then you will know that it has recently been delayed until June 21st but that isn’t what you are here for right now. What you are here for is a batch of new screenshots that were released a few days ago by EA for Grasshopper Manufacture’s psychological action horror title. Nothing says horror like plenty of deformed creatures that are out for your soul.

The above screenshot contains a half human and half demon monster that is non-violent towards demon hunter Garcia Hotspur and instead will provide him with items if he feeds him enough white gems. Besides that we are also treated to images of the monsters which you will have to face down, including a very odd faced horse rode by a pig monster. Catch the screenshots below and the game itself when it releases on June 21st for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Crazy Waxing Review

Overview

Ever wanted to work in a waxing salon? No, me either. But if you’re like me and are getting sick of monotonous puzzle games then take a look at Crazy Waxing. Pixel Ammo’s second game of the year, Crazy Waxing, is a puzzle game with an odd premise. As the owner of a waxing salon, it’s your job to get through the line of people eagerly waiting to be smoothed out. If the story line doesn’t impress you, read on, Crazy Waxing has many redeemable features.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Crazy Waxing is pretty simple. When you break it down, there is a row of hairy customers who are all in need of a wax. Each customer has five uncannily hairy areas on their body: their face, torso, hands, feet and, how do I put this, bikini zone. Within these levels, are obscurely shaped patches of hair, and Tetris shaped wax strips. Like Tetris, the player can rotate the shapes so they fit into the frame of the puzzle. Strips can be rotated by using two fingers placed on the screen and turning the strip until it is in the desired position. Once the wax strip is in the correct, well hopefully correct place, it can be stuck down to the hairy patch with a tap. You can either place more strips on the hairy areas, or swipe across the screen to rip the hair from its roots. Personally I tend to try and place all the strips at once and then rip them all off in one horrible swipe.

Points are scored by how much hair is removed from the characters section of the body and rated with one, two or three golden razor blades. There is also a reward of a gold, silver or bronze medal if you complete the level quickly enough. The more customers you wax the more customers start to come through your door. There are nineteen customers in total to be unlocked as you gain waxing skills through the game. As you progress the customer list grows, starting with two at first, until you reach the final nineteen.

Graphics and Audio

With such a disgusting concept behind the game, you can expect that the graphics will match the awful imagery that comes to mind when you think of waxing a programmer named Dr. Chin. There is a hilarious change in character design after you’ve waxed the customer smooth. The hairy customers tend to look disgruntled and impatient, I can only assume because they’ve been waiting in line some time and the hair has gotten to that really itchy stage. After the waxing is all over with, the characters stand in a victorious pose, finally content in their smooth skin. There is also a slightly disturbing attention to detail of graphics within levels. Characters have weird cuts, scars, stitches, what looks like boils, and even tattoos. While the graphics are a little gross at times, it really does make the game. With such simplistic gameplay, the narrative of the game is really held together with how well the graphical side of Crazy Waxing as been pulled off.

There are two different musical scores through out Crazy Waxing. The game opens with a little carnival tune that extends into the main level section screen. The characters are lined up and with the music, makes it seem a little bit like a circus side show, which would make sense with all the near-beard women. Once you are in the portion of the game that involves a strategic removal of hair the music changes. The music here is more similar to other casual puzzle games such as Tetris or Bejeweled. I’m pretty fond of this sort of music, it isn’t too alarming and you can just sit back and plan the best way to approach the puzzle. That is until the timer at the top starts to flash and I frantically place strips anywhere and begin to rip them off blindly. That being said, the sound effects of the game add to the overall weird humour of the game. The wax strips cling to the hair with a splat and when you remove the strips with cringe-worthy noise you can almost feel the characters pain, even more so when they actually scream.

Conclusion

Crazy Waxing is a nice little twist on a traditional casual gaming format: the puzzle. The puzzles themselves get challenging towards the end of client list so the game isn’t at risk of being too simplistic. While the idea behind the game is simple, it is really pushed forward with this weird narrative of a waxing salon, and really hits home with the crazy graphics. It may at times be a bit grotesque, but Crazy Waxing works. If you’re into puzzle games, hairy people or even formally hairy people, check out Crazy Waxing.

Next Soul Calibur title could be revealed soon

It seems every classic fighting game has come out with a sequel this year, or at least in the past few years. We’ve had Tekken 6 released a few years back, the brand new iteration of Mortal Kombat only week ago and Street Fighter IV is sitting pretty on a 3D handheld as well as on home consoles. A fighting series which hasn’t come to the table however is Soul Calibur, but that all may be changing soon.

Sure this isn’t any actual game announcement but Namco Bandai’s Daishi Odashima who is a part of Project SOUL has tweeted on his twitter: “Hopefully, I will be able to announce something mid-May.” With fighting game fans eager for yet another title to add to their collection perhaps this is the best time to do something. Also as Dustin pointed out, Namco has launched a new countdown website with 14 days left. This would place an announcement on May 11th which is quite close to mid-May. Interesting no?
