5 Games That Shouldn’t Be Movies

We’re in a golden age of cinema at the moment… Ok, ok, I couldn’t even convince myself there. With non-stop samey franchises like Final Destination, Saw and Fast & Furious, and the endless stream of terrible movies based on old movies and TV shows, like Bewitched, Yogi Bear, The Smurfs and Alvin & the Chipmunks, Hollywood are running out of places to turn for inspiration. Inevitably, they’ve turned to our beloved games industry, picking up the film rights to some rather odd choices.

Since we all know how lazy Hollywood producers are, I’ve saved them the trouble of writing the stories for these upcoming game-films, as well as suggesting directors. No need to thank me, guys.

Space Invaders
Status: Film rights recently acquired
Genre: Sci-Fi Thriller
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Tagline: They came from space… to invade!
Synopsis:

Jonathan (Keanu Reeves) is a divorced father, trying to make ends meet after  leaving the army in protest. He struggles with his estranged ex-wife, who decides to take the kids and move to another city. As he hurries to the airport to say goodbye, strange pixelly spacecraft appear in the sky above him. As they begin a slow, jerky descent, Jonathan must overcome his objections to war, climb into a tank and blast his way through wave after wave of invaders.

Being a Shyamalan film, the ending contains a twist: the invaders will never stop their descent. The more Jonathan destroys, the faster they return.

Pac-Man
Status: Film rights purchased in 2008 for $200 million – I wish I was joking
Genre: Horror
Director: Wes Craven
Tagline: Wakka wakka wakka…
Synopsis:

Mr and Ms Pacman move into an old house in the city, to get closer to the specialists helping the couple battle their eating disorder. There, they are soon tormented by four flamboyantly-coloured ghosts who haunt the place, leaving trails of tasty dots around to tempt the Pacman couple. They try to control themselves, with help from their unorthodox therapist (played by Robin Williams), but soon learn of a mystical object that may turn their eating disorder into a weapon – the legendary, slightly-bigger-than-usual dot…

With Craven at the helm, expect a decent scary film, with moments of humour.

The Sims
Status: In Development, slated for a 2012 release (seriously)
Genre: Drama
Director:  Tim Burton
Tagline: Free Will is only a simulation
Synopsis:

Marcus (Johnny Depp, because he has to be in every Burton film) was a moderately successful businessman, with a bright future in his career and family. Suddenly everything begins to crumble, as Marcus makes several bad decisions and winds up sitting at home all the time, unemployed and alone. An epiphany hits when he realises he wasn’t in control of those decisions, and sets about to change his life.

He asks around the neighbourhood and realises the problem extends further than he thought: all through Sim City, people are wetting themselves, getting into fights or kissing strangers against their will. The neighbourhood attempt to fight back against a malevolent, all-powerful force that drives them to destroy their lives, or bricks them up in doorless rooms and lets them starve.

As Burton fans expect, The Sims film will be set in an unnecessarily dark and twisted atmosphere, and will star Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.

Angry Birds
Status:  Inevitable
Director: Michael Bay
Genre: War/Action
Tagline: Get a bird’s eye view of war
Synopsis:

Red is a simple bird with a simple life. Newly married, he couldn’t be happier as he works each day at his demolition business, while his wife stays home with the eggs. His brother Yellow often scolds him for not taking part in the ongoing war against the Pigs. But when Red’s own eggs are kidnapped as part of a terrorist plot and sold into prostitution, Red and Yellow assemble a rag-tag team of bird mercenaries to destroy the Pig menace for good – one flimsy wooden structure at a time.

Bay is known for thin stories and lots of action, so expect a non-stop splode-athon with this one.

Tetris
Status: Hopefully it won’t actually become a movie, but I wouldn’t be too surprised if some desperate studio buys the rights to it.
Director: Steven Spielberg
Genre: Teen comedy
Tagline: Sometimes fitting in is only 90 degrees away
Synopsis:

L-Shape is sick of not fitting in. While all the other teenagers are disappearing to all the cool lines, he and his friend T-Piece are always left sitting around after they leave. They try to form lines with just the two of them and see where everyone else disappears to, but they can’t line up properly. As they begin to blame each other for their exile, a fight ensues during a routine descent, and the two find themselves landing upside down. Suddenly included in a line, they disappear along with all the others, and soon find themselves living the high life.

Initially excited about their new friends, L-Shape and T-Piece begin to realise their own friendship is fraying, and after another argument, they stop talking to each other. It doesn’t take long before they realise that rotating 90 degrees has transformed them into people they don’t want to be. They stop fitting into the lines, and go back to spending quality time with each other, as outcasts, and true friends. Awww!

Spielberg knows how a Hollywood film works, meaning this will be a by-the-numbers family film with obvious lessons of friendship and being yourself.

Drakensang Online Opens its Beta

0

Browser based free-to-play MMORPG Drakensang-Online has recently come out of closed beta and into its open beta phase. This means that players will be able to play the beta version of the game before the game officially launches in the opcoming months.

Usually an open beta is a kind of stress test for servers, as well as an indication on interest of the game for developers so that they can find out the kind of equipment needed to maintain the game post launch. The game is very Diablo in its gameplay and runs incredibly well from within the web-browser.

The developers are incredibly excited to see their game reach an online audience –

“Drakensang’s going online!” rejoiced Bernd Beyreuther, Head of Development at Bigpoint Berlin “The launch of this game allows us to realize a long-held ambition of developing a fully immersive action RPG game that can be enjoyed by all players from the first moment of playing, and is brought alive by its large community. We have developed a rich story within the game and will be constantly tailoring and expanding the game based on user demands.”

The game (so far) has two selectable classes, one a mage-like Spellweaver, and the other being a warrior-like Dragonknight. There also appears to be a few other classes coming soon.

Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge secures USA Eagles license

Home Entertainment Suppliers has the landed the official license for the USA Eagles, the national rugby team for the USA, to appear in Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge.

Adding the USA Eagles to the growing roster of official licences will aid fans of the fastest growing sport in North America, to feel right at home alongside other Rugby Union fans from all over the World. It joins the other wealth of licensed teams to take the total to 93. It’s great to see the involvement of the USA Eagles, because although the sport is growing in North America, it still isn’t as big as in Europe and the Pacific and we don’t often see them in Rugby Union matches.

New Teaser for NHL 12 Emerges from the Ice…

Hockey fans everywhere will be able to celebrate very soon as EA are set to release NHL 12 on September 9th. Today, a new trailer was released by EA, promising that a certain “legend” will be revealed for the game on 8-11-11 (which is sometime later today for those keeping track). Considering that a pre-order is mentioned at the end of the trailer, I want to say this could be referencing a special DLC that will be announced for those who purchase the game ahead of time.

Other than that tease, you can still see a tiny bit of gameplay footage mixed into the trailer with the virtual crowd ready to watch these athletes take to the ice. Watch the new clip below and if anything is revealed later today, we will keep you updated.

Oh, Japan! – #1 The Sport of Kings

Oh, Japan! is a new weekly feature I am starting which will chronicle the wierd, wacky and just plain crazy goings on in Japan. Because we all know, Japan is prone to doing things that make us Westerners say “Oh, Japan!”.

This week for the first edition of Oh, Japan! we will be taking a look at a crazy video game from Japan known as JRA Japan World Tour. The game tasks you with placing a bet on a horse-race, you then watch the match and see if you bet right. Normal enough, right? Well let’s just say what lies within JRA Japan World Tour is far from normal.

Check it out in the video below and lets all simultaneously laugh, sigh and then exclaim “Oh, Japan!”.

Mortal Kombat Freddy Krueger DLC Available Now!

1, 2, Freddy’s Koming for you! Since the announcement at Comic-Con that the legendary horror Icon Freddy Krueger would become a playable fighter for Mortal Kombat, players have been dying to get their hands on him! Well now your nightmares can go to rest, as. NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment have announced that Xbox 360 owners will be available soon and PlayStation 3 owners would be able to play as him as of today! Outstanding!

Furthermore, a vignette trailer explaining his reason for being in the Mortal Kombat tournament has been released, which you can see below! Warner Bros Interactive and NetherRealm Studios have done the best they could to give reasoning behind this as well as why he has two gloves instead of one, and its fair to say they’ve done a good job and blending the two universes together. While trying to steal Earth Relm’s souls, Shao Khan was actually cutting Krueger grass, as he prays on the youth’s souls whilst they sleep. To save these souls so he could terrorize them, Freddy challenged Khan to Mortal Kombat, where Shao Khan ripped Freddy from the dream realm into reality, making him mortal. Now if Freddy wants to return to the dream realm so he can breathe horror into Elm Street, he must find and kill Shao Khan.

Along with this announcement, a TV commercial has been released to hype it up, which you can see here! Furthermore, Freddy coming with compatibility pack #4 for free, where two new klassic costumes are available for download. With all this kontent available, I suppose you’ll never have to go to sleep!

Apple and Big publishers named in price fixing

Our friends at Apple are in court so much these days one would be forgiven for thinking they had changed their business strategy and were moving into the field of law. From patent lawsuits on Iphones with Samsung through to worker suicides in their suppliers factories and now price fixing. Apple and a group of very well known book publishers have been accused of “illegally fixing e-book prices to “boost profits and force rivals Amazon to abandon its pro-consumer discount pricing”. From a brief reading of the lawsuit filed, it focuses around Apple entering the kindle market with the Ipad with the intention of colluding with major publishers to increase e-book prices listed.

Within the lawsuit filed, aside from Apple are big name publishers such as Harper Collins, Hatchette books, Macmillan, Penguin publishing and Simon and Schuster. The companies are being accused of employing what us known as an “agency model” in the industry. What this involves is prices set at a publisher level rather than being decided upon by each individual retailer. If this doesn’t sound familiar think Ipod. I was working in electronic retail when the IPod phenomena first started and clearly remember being told the prices were fixed by Apple and not negotiable.
Interestingly, the lawsuits are not being instigated by Amazon but rather 2 disgruntled customers, sick and tired of paying premium prices due to greedy corporation’s anti-competitive laws. They are seeking a class action suit for restitution and damages as well as admittance on defendants behalf.

Amazon has been serving book lovers worldwide for years now with cheaper prices and reasonable shipping rates being blamed for the closure of many bricks and mortar stores. With their acquisition of the mighty bookdepository their potential stronghold on the online book market is undeniable. What the publishers had in their favour was an ally with as much to lose as them, someone who was as “terrified of Amazons popularity as themselves; Apple,” says Steve Berman. Representing the plaintiffs, Berman knows what to do. “We intend to prove that Apple needed a way to neutralize Amazons kindle before its popularity could challenge the upcoming introduction of the Ipad.”

The pricing model first materialised in 2010 when publishers asked Amazon to raise its online prices, with Amazon denying the request, stating that any price over $9.99 was too expensive. Eventually they gave in after Macmillan started pulling popular titles from its catalogues.

Immoral, unethical and just downright greedy, Apple continue their Nazi like stance on their market position, further emphasising why I will never touch another of their products.
