EA could lose over $1 billion over NCAA lawsuit says USA Today

Luck seems about right, because that may be just what Electronic Arts needs in this upcoming class action lawsuit being leveled against them. The lawsuit has been going on for over two years and it involves compensation for using athletes’ likenesses in EA’s popular NCAA football and basketball games. Considering most NCAA athletes aren’t allowed to be paid in any shape and or form, this wasn’t a problem before, but has recently been the a thorn in EA’s side.

USA Today
decided to do a little calculation on behalf of Electronic Arts and found that the company could lose over $1 billion in damages if they were to lose the case. The math from USA Today breaks down as such; the lawsuit says that each player can be given $1k per likeness used per platform. The likenesses break down to $305.5 million for football players and around $29 million for basketball. This leads to a total of $334.5 million.

The judge presiding over the case can make the decision whether or not EA and the NCAA “knowingly, willfully or intentionally” violated compensation then the amount can be tripled, placing it at nearly $1.1 billion. Maybe that is why EA started Project Ten Dollar and $25 season pass… to pay off their legal fees.

Cabela’s Hunting Party revealed to be Kinect compatible

Sure Activision announced that they will be bringing out a new Call of Duty: Black Ops DLC package named Rezurrection today but what about those who prefer hunting something a bit more elusive than the shuffling undead? Activision released an investor release today and in it they mentioned something they are calling Cabela’s Hunting Party.

Apparently Cabela’s Hunting Party will make use of the Kinect somehow and will be released sometime in the near future. There were no details given about the title, but the fact that they included “Party” in the name of the game, it may mean that it will simply be a mini-game collection. But instead of tossing a ball in a cup you will be shooting lead at a deer or two. Just take the above picture and remove the light gun from his hands and voila, instant Kinect hunting.

No. 6 Anime licensed by Sentai Filmworks

After only airing 4 episodes to date in Japan, dystopian/utopian futuristic thriller No. 6 has been licensed for dubbing and distribution throughout the US by Sentai Filmworks.

This news comes as quite a shock considering the series that it has not yet even made it half way through it’s set series lenth of 11 episodes. However this would not be the first time Sentai Filmworks have done such a licensing, as this has also happened with High School of the Dead when it first aired in Japan.

No. 6 tells the tale of a post war future in which 6 utopian cities have been set up to house the civilised upperclass, whilst the rest of the people considered filth by the governement live in the baron wastelands left behind. However there is it some deeper going on in these supposed utopian cities. Something dark that the government wants to keep hidden. Will the truth behind No. 6 be revealed?

You can catch episodes of No. 6 simulcast from Japan on Crunchyroll currently. No set release date has been given by Sentai as of posting.

Rise of Nightmares trailer brings bloody good laughs

Some people may say the Kinect has become nothing but a children’s toy, with games not involved with dancing or children being nearly impossible to find. Those people would unfortunately be true for the most part. That is of course until September 6th when Sega brings perhaps the first game for the Kinect that actually may have some blood and gore.

Now violence doesn’t automatically equal a great game, but you should definitely revise that opinion when you see their latest trailer which was released today. Not only is the video set to some funny music but it also shows plenty of zombies being sliced and torn apart, as well as your own character getting killed in a variety of ways. Sega’s Rise of Nightmares is a Kinect only title, and may be the best one I’ve seen that doesn’t involve dancing or cats.

Black Ops ‘Rezurrection’ DLC announced for August 23rd release

There have been many DLC additions to Call of Duty: Black Ops since it has been released. Three actually. Each of these added four multiplayer maps and then one extra zombie map. But it seems that the latest DLC, “Rezurrection” we will be seeing four zombie maps and the addition of one that is quite literally out of this world.

The DLC will be released on August 23rd and will, of course, be released on the Xbox 360 first before the PlayStation 3 and PC. The maps included will be the remastered levels from World at War: Nacht der Untoten, Verruckt, Shi No Numa and Der Riese, which were included in Hardened and Prestige editions of the game as well as a Moon level where players will have to fight off zombies on the surface of the moon. Of course the price will be its usual out of the world $15 or 1200 MSP.

TwinBee to Join the 3D Classics on the 3DS…

Those of you who have eagerly been waiting for word of the next 3D Classic to hit the 3DS Virtual Console are in luck as Konami’s Twinbee has been announced to be joining the rather small line-up on August 10th for Japan. Oddly enough, this top down shooter never officially released outside of the region (except in a Konami compilation game), so it may end up never crossing shores.

As you see in the picture above, instead of the 3D add-in, Twinbee will feature curtains located on each side of the top screen with the player’s score resting on the bottom. I certainly wouldn’t mind seeing Twinbee come out to the 3DS Virtual Console here, but I am still patiently waiting on some Kid Icarus or Metroid love at the moment. So now you tell us, is TwinBee a game you would buy on the 3DS?

Bosses and Buzzsaws Come out in new BloodRayne Betrayal Screens…

In just a few weeks, Rayne will finally re-emerge on the Xbox Live Arcade and PSN in Bloodrayne Betrayal. Majesco and Wayforward have been slowly teasing us with screenshots and trailers over the past few months for the game, and today is no different as a few new screens have been released to make the now small wait feel like an eternity.

In the screenshots (which you can view below), we see Rayne pulling off some new aerial maneuvers, tackling a large boss, and even firing a large firearm in what appears to be a level puzzle. Enjoy the madness below and stay tuned, as I am sure there will be even more teases coming our way up until the August 31st release date.

Karma Online: Prisoners of the Dead BETA

0

Game developer Joymax has officially opened the doors for their beta test of Karma Online: Prisoners of the Dead. The game has been developed with a World War II theme surrounding the Axis and Allies. The most notable units thus far are Germans and Russians. Strictly online, Prisoners of the Dead offers a multitude of modes to play. While playing through the beta, I did not notice a particular storyline or single-player mode.

The first interesting aspect I noticed was the inventory. Not only are you allowed to change up your weapon schematic, but you are also able to allocate skills to increase effectiveness in battle. For instance if you put 3 skill points in “Precise Aim”, your character will have 10% reduced recoil – this would help immensely while using a sniper rifle. Unlike other online FPS games, Karma Online requires you to repair your equipment after battle. You will not be able to use your items if they have too much wear on them. Make sure your primary weapon in your inventory is equipped otherwise you will not be carrying one. *Trust me, it learned the hard way.*

Upon entering the selection screen, the player is able to choose which faction to play as. The game will start loading as soon as the host starts the match. Players may navigate and change equipment in inventory while the game is actually going on. Once the player hits the “ready” button, they cannot navigate off of the screen and will join the active game.

After you have severely embarrassed yourself in combat, you can observed the results of battle. Total XP, KP, and skill points are noted at the top of the summary. Experience is utilized to measure the skill and time put forth in a player. As more experience is gained, new weapons and characters become available. Sadly, this game measures your accuracy. I do not see this as problem if you are trying to mow down your opponents…

Karma Online: Prisoner of the Dead is definitely worth a look. Remember the beta is open until August 16th, so get your WW2 gear on and join in on the fun. You can catch me online as the PoidPipper.
