Lagrange: The Flower of Rin-ne Set 1
Studio: Xebec
Publisher: Viz Media
Format: Blu-ray, DVD (Reviewed)
Release Date: June 11, 2013
Price: $44.82 – Available Here

Overview
There are quite a few anime featuring mechs battling against one another as well as a large number of series focusing on the bonds between the cast and even more focusing on cute girls doing cute things. However what happens when those three things are combined together to create an anime series? Well Lagrange: The Flower of Rin-Ne is what you get; however is Set 1 of the series worth your time?

Story
At the all-girls school of Kamogawa, a certain girl named Madoka Kyono is the sole member of a club called the Jersey Club. This club is a continuation of when her cousin attended the school and the Jersey Club serves as a Jack of All Trades where its members help out anyone who is in trouble or requests assistance. This means everything from helping out other clubs when they need an extra member, to assisting teachers and even saving people who may be drowning out in the ocean.

However when someone she has never seen before requests that she become someone who will defend the earth against alien invaders, Madoka may be getting more than she asked for. You see, a strange girl named Lan has appeared on Earth and introduces Madoka to the fact that not only do aliens exist, but Lan herself is from the alien organization named Le Garite, and Madoka must join a human organization working alongside Le Garite on a traveling island named Pharos to defend the earth from another alien threat.

Madoka is never one to turn down a request and as she becomes fast friends with Lan, she accepts the role of piloting a mecha called the Vox Aura which she seemed to have bonded with many years before during an incident. As she begins defending the Earth from incoming threats, not only does she become closer with Lan, another Vox pilot, but Madoka also becomes fast friends with a ditsy girl named Muginami, yet another bonded Vox pilot.

With these three Vox pilots together, it seems like everything may be heading towards a successful end with the humans and the co-operating alien forces succeeding. However little is as it seems and as the dark past of the Vox is revealed and more light is shined upon the various alien forces, Madoka and her newfound friends must try to persevere, even when they know little of the machinations of those around them.

Lagrange: The Flower of Rin-Ne is a rather interesting series as it takes a number of rather generic stereotypes and actually manages to blend them together into something quite interesting. The three main girls all feature personalities that we have seen before but thanks to the amount of character development and their interactions with one another help these three simple archetypes work well with one another.

lagrange-set-1-review- (3)

Whenever the series chooses to focus on these three it usually always focuses on the more light-hearted comedic elements of a “cute girls doing cute things” series as these three tackle various Jersey Club tasks and grow closer to one another despite initial complications and one of the more interesting aspects of the series is watching how close knit these three become as they overcome the challenges in their path, whether it be an approaching army, dark stories from the past or simply capturing eels in swimming pool.

On the other side of the coin, these three are Vox pilots and whenever the focus shifts towards the drama aspect as these three find themselves caught up in the politics of the warring aliens battling over the Vox and to make matters worse, neither side reveals all of their cards. This means that even though plenty of explanations are given, for every answer the viewer receives another question is raised. Though considering there is a second season, these various questions will likely be answered then.

lagrange-set-1-review- (4)

In the end, Lagrange: The Flower of Rin-Ne Set 1 features both light-hearted moments of three girls growing closer together through adversity as well as plenty of drama and mystery about the warring factions and the Vox. Not everything is revealed but there is a nice balance found between light and dark and thanks to strongly developed characters and an interesting plot Set 1 leaves us with plenty to look forward to in the second season.

Visuals
Lagrange: The Flower of Rin-Ne features both standard animation techniques as well as a fair use of CG elements whenever the mech units and the Vox are focused on. These CG designs are rather intricate looking and look great in motion as the combat sequences are not only extravagantly animated but also quite colorful thanks to the nature of the machines the girls are piloting.

lagrange-set-1-review- (5)

The character designs are rather simplistic and a bit stereotypical as well but even though they are usually well animated, the standard animation sequences often see drops in quality, especially at mid-range with facial expressions and details becoming vague semblances of themselves at close-range.

It is worth noting that although Viz Media has given Lagrange: The Flower of Rin-Ne a “Explicit Content” label and rated it MA, the anime’s fan-service elements are fairly tame in comparison to many of the other series out there. Sure the girls’ Vox uniforms are a bit revealing and there are a few suggestive themes involving eels as well as shaded nudity with no actual nipples shown, but nothing overly sexual occurs and no full blown nudity is presented.

lagrange-set-1-review- (6)

That being said, there are some yuri undertones and a few instances of girl on girl sexual harassment, but these tones can simply be passed off as a close friendship between Madoka, Lan and Muginami.

Audio
Being a Viz release, Lagrange: The Flower of Rin-Ne Set 1 features both the English and the Japanese voice track. The English cast handles the dub quite nicely, though Muginami’s Karen Strassman does seem to oversell the character’s ditsy personality a little too much.

lagrange-set-1-review- (7)

As for the series’ soundtrack, it sports a number of memorable background tracks which, the most notable of which play during the action sequences or as the Vox are set to take-off. The opening theme for the series is “Try Unite!” by Megumi Nakajima which is set to some rather outstanding animation and works well as the series opener while “Hello!” also by Megumi Nakajima provides a fitting ending theme that highlights the light-hearted side of the series.

Extras
Viz has provided a bit more than the standard fair of bonus features for Lagrange: The Flower of Rin-Ne Set 1 by including fifteen minutes worth of “Kamogawa Drama” bonus shorts which are mostly comedic and also a bit fan-servicey and focus on side-stories that occur to the girls.

lagrange-set-1-review- (8)

Besides the inclusion of the bonus shorts, there are also your standard clean opening and ending theme and the addition of production art. There isn’t much in the way of production art here besides the girls in different outfits, some side character art and images of the Vox robots. Sadly the company did not choose to highlight the various end-card artwork featured in each episode as a bonus of any kind.

Overall
Lagrange: The Flower of Rin-Ne Set 1 takes a number of tried and true anime fallbacks and creates an interesting story that features a memorable cast of characters and their bonds with one another, fluid action sequences and a number of comedic light-hearted sequences paired with dark drama. While numerous questions viewers are left with by the end of Set 1 may be problematic, these revelations will likely lead us to an even better second season whenever it graces store shelves with this charming trio of female leads.

DBZ Battle of Z First Trailer Released

dbz-battle-of-z-logo-01

After months of teasing through the official Dragon Ball Games Facebook and the recent scans confirming the existence of a new Dragon Ball Z game, Namco Bandai have finally given us a taste of what to expect in Dragon Ball Z Battle of Z with a trailer.

The trailer is packed with action and shows multiple opponents on the battlefield at once fighting off in an 8 player battle royale and also teaming up to fight giant enemies such as Giant Ape Vegeta. While the graphics and animations don’t look too flash right now hopefully they will be improved by time the game receives a full release. I’m just excited to get my hands on some crazy 8 player DBZ action! Let’s hope this game plays alot better than Dragonball Z Ultimate Tenkaichi, where gameplay was slammed for being shallow and repetitive.

The game is confirmed to be coming out for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PS Vita. You can check out the trailer below and please let us know what you think in the comments.

Nisemonogatari Part 2 Review

nisemonogatari-part2-review-01

Nisemonogatari Part 2
Studio: SHAFT
Publisher: Hanabee
Format:
DVD
Release Date: June 5, 2013
Price: $44.99 – Available Here

Overview
The second half of Hanabee’s Australian release of Nisemonogatari continues on from where Part 1 ended, and begins at the “Tsukihi Phoenix” arc which covers the last four episodes. After a strong focus on Koyomi’s “bigger-little” sister, Karen in the Karen Bee arc, Part 2 centres on the “littler-little” sister, Tsukihi. We loved the first half of Nisemonogatari, but does the second half stay just as strong?

nisemonogatari-part2-review-02

Story
As mentioned this launches straight into the plot so make sure that you have seen Part 1, even though it goes without saying. If you’re expecting a tremendous plot revelation at the start, prepare to be disappointed. Instead, the rest of us revel in the heightened fan service that seems to accelerate as the series continues.

I mentioned in my review of Part 1 that the fan service here is unique. Every time the show throws sexual innuendo or lewd scenes at the audience, it’s done in such a witty fashion you’d be hard pressed to not crack a smile. Although you’d be well advised to watch this in private, as Nisemonogatari has crafted one of the most awkward yet entertaining tooth-brushing scenes in film history complete with implied incest as the show rides the “siscon” train of recent anime.

nisemonogatari-part2-review-03

The pacing of the show remains odd as it’s only in the final two episodes where things really pick up and the plot begins to change substantially. Having the first half 8 episodes long with the second “half” being only 4 episodes, the structure of the show itself prevents smooth pacing. The introduction of two interesting and powerful villains will have you lean forward from your long-slumped posture, and Shinobu’s new form will leave you completely astonished. The final battle really is the highlight of Nisemonogatari, fan service aside of course.

Fans of the series will likely rate Nisemonogatari as the weaker entry of the series, particularly with regards to the story. It is hardly a sequel in the proper sense, but a glorified add-on. One that happens to be set after Bakemonogatari. Fans of Koyomi’s tsundere girlfriend, Hitagi, will be further disappointed as she continues to play a minimal role in Nisemonogatari. A reason for celebration for some of us, though.

nisemonogatari-part2-review-06

Having said that, it’s a whole load of fun and it will shine a greater light on and even further develop the characters you love. Especially that little enigmatic vampire, Shinobu, because…wow. She needs to be seen in Part 2!

Visuals
The animation stays consistent throughout Nisemonogatari, so expect the same level of high quality as seen in the first half. Artistic direction stays as fascinating as ever, resulting in some truly unique touches and backgrounds seen in anime. Be prepared for some much-needed bursts of unexpected and hyper-violent action right at the end.

A new opening graces the show, focusing on Tsukihi in a fairly adorable way, while the ending piece is kept the same as before.

nisemonogatari-part2-review-05

Audio
Again, the sound design is as consistent as ever, which can only mean great things if you’ve kept up with the series so far. There are a couple of new music tracks here which sound just awesome as the show reaches its apex towards the end. Platinum Disco is the name of the second opening song, and it features the super cute Tsukihi dancing to modern-oriental music. Exactly what you need after a stressful day of work, preferably on repeat.

Extras
I can’t stress enough how Hanabee has carved out a truly special collector’s book that holds both discs and pages of artwork from the show. With Part 2 of Nisemonogatari, this marks the completion of their “monogatari” book releases and we can only hope future titles worthy of the packaging can receive the same treatment. (Hint: Nekomonogatari and Monogatari Season 2!)

nisemonogatari-part2-review-07

It seems Hanabee has balanced out the lack of episodes on one disc, a total of 4 as opposed to the first half’s two-disc 7, with all the special features crammed in. It’s not mentioned on the back, but the second half includes all the credit-less opening and ending songs along with trailers and commercials. That and being $5 less justifies the purchase more. At the end of the day, though, you are paying almost $100 for 11 episodes with both halves included, meaning this is geared more for fans rather than the casual passerby. If you do happen to be that curious passerby though, I recommend you start with Part 1 of Bakemonogatari.

Overall
Part 2 rounds out and concludes the bizarre but very entertaining Nisemonogatari. Delivering everything that fans loved in Bakemonogatari, this show as a hole ticks most of the boxes. Its biggest flaw, however, is the pacing of the story. Drawn out in some areas, but rushed in others, along with an uneven number of 11 episodes makes this a haphazard narrative.

nisemonogatari-part2-review-04

If you liked Bakemonogatari, watching this is a no-brainer. If however you didn’t think much of it, but enjoyed how Koyomi fools around with the girls then you’ll actually like this more. The director has capitalised on the traits of every character and focused on the fan service to a jaw-dropping degree at times.

At a total of $95 or so for both parts with subtitles only, this isn’t by any means a cheap viewing session. But comparing it to the only other English release in the US which is far more expensive, it isn’t so bad. Especially if you appreciate the love Hanabee has put into each half of the show.

Exstetra’s first teaser trailer released

extetra-teaser-twin-tail

Remember that RPG involving kissing to save the world? Well today FuRyu, the same company behind Unchained Blades, has released their first teaser trailer for the title. The trailer is courtesy of Famitsu but it does give us a very small glimpse of what Exstetra‘s gameplay may look like as well as some anime cutscene goodness.

Besides that, there isn’t too much to note besides the ClariS song and the new tsundere character that appears near the end of the trailer. At the moment Exstetra is set to be released on the 3DS and Vita this October in Japan while no Western release has been announced.
