hyperdimension-neptunia-rebirth-reveal- (1)

As we’ve already heard, Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1 is going to be a complete remake of the original Hyperdimension Neptunia title which was released three years ago. Now the game will be released on the PlayStation Vita and will feature an update to practically everything in the game.

This includes using the battle system and character portrait styles used in Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory as well as the character models, a slightly modified story and more. You can see some of the first upgraded screenshots from the game below. Currently there is no word from NIS America about whether Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1 will be released in North America but for now it is set to be released in Japan sometime in October.

Senki Zesshō Symphogear G promo video released

senki-zeshou-symphogear-g-rival

Today a rather short promo video was released for Senki Zesshō Symphogear G which begins airing this Summer 2013 anime season. Senki Zesshō Symphogear G is the second season to Senki Zesshō Symphogear which was licensed by FUNimation.

In the promo video which can be seen below we see the three main characters from the original series, Hibiki, Tsubasa and Chris fighting against three new opponents, Maria, Kirika and Shirabe who have apparently been given their abilities by dark Gungnir. It also appears that the Noise enemies will still return as basic enemies of humankind, though their role in the story has yet to be revealed.

Danganronpa and Brothers Conflict anime to be streamed by FUNimation

danganronpa-the-animation-01

Today FUNimation announced the first license pick ups of the Summer 2013 anime season and while one of these may have been expected, the other one is kind of out of left field. Today the company revealed that they have acquired the streaming rights to Danganronpa The Animation and Brothers Conflict. While FUNimation did not say when these anime would debut on their website, they will premiere in Japan on July 4th and July 2nd respectively.

Danganronpa The Animation will be an adaptation of the PSP action adventure game featuring the same cast as the game which sees a group of highly skilled students being trapped inside of a school. The only way to escape? To kill another student without getting caught and prosecuted by the rest of remaining students.

As for Brothers Conflict, it is an otome style anime adapting a romance novel which focuses on a girl who suddenly finds herself with 13 stepbrothers of various ages after her father remarries.

Vampire: The Masquerade LARP Sets Eyes on Stretch Goals

Not every game has to be of the video variety as seen by Live Action Role Play (LARP) being another choice and popular enough to find its way into conventions. LARPing can also take many forms from staging zombie scenarios to creating the worlds best known from highly acclaimed video game like Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines on the PC. That particular theme just so happens to currently be in the middle of a very successful Kickstarter from By Night Studios.

That Kickstarter began as a simple attempt to create a physical rulebook for Mind’s Eye Theatre: Vampire The Masquerade, a LARP set in the World of Darkness from White Wolf Publishing. With an initial goal of $60,000 to cover printing and shipping, backers have so far pledged more than doubled that amount and there are still 10 days to go. With all this support By Night Studios has set even more stretch goals to shoot for as the Kickstarter starts to wind down.

vampire-the-masquerade-larp-characters

Now in addition to the previous tiers with the physical rulebooks and rings, backers can pledge to receive pins of the various clans and sects from the Vampire: The Masquerade as they attempt to raise enough money for the stretch goals of a Tim Bradstreet Edition rulebook where all art comes from the Vampire: The Masquerade artist. Even further goals will see the rulebook translated into additional languages.

Those interested in a Vampire: The Masquerade LARP and/or wanting to help with the Kickstarter can find more information in the video embedded below, otherwise they can find the Mind’s Eye Theatre: Vampire The Masquerade page on Kickstarter.

Doodle Jump Now on Xbox Live

All those doodle jumpers that can’t contain their enjoyment to just their phone can now find even more now that it has come to Xbox 360. Doodle Jump for Kinect takes it to a whole new level by using the player’s entire body as the controller as they jump, flap, clap, and more as they try to reach the top.

Coming from developers by Lima Sky and Smoking Gun Interactive, with D3Publisher, fans of the mobile game or those playing it for the first time can now download Doodle Jump for Kinect on the XBLA. In addition to the game’s release, a launch trailer has also been released to show off the new features available in the game.

Players wanting to check out the trailer can find it embedded below, while those wanting to download Doodle Jump for Kinect can do so for 400 MS Points from the XBLA or Xbox.com. Though as is obviously noted in the title, a Kinect is required to play the game.

Home – A Unique Horror Adventure Review

Home – A Unique Horror Adventure
Developer: Benjamin Rivers
Publisher: Benjamin Rivers
Platforms: iPhone, iPad (Reviewed)
Release Date: Out Now
Price: $2.99 – Available Here

Overview

Home – A Unique Horror Adventure, is a horror game with simple controls and an 8-bit art style. In a time where people think that being drawn into a game and being engaged by it is only possible with state-of-the-art visuals and a script that is 20,000 pages long, Home goes to show that when it comes to games, and horror games in particular, that atmosphere is still truly king.

Home-screenshot-01

Story

I can’t talk much about the story without ruining the entire experience. What I can say is that your protagonist wakes up in a strange house with an injured leg and no memory of how he got there. It is up to the player to help piece together the story, which grows ever more foreboding, sickening and tense as you progress.

home-screenshot-02

The decisions you make through the game no matter how minor, will shape the narrative and its ultimate conclusion. There are an insane amount of possible endings, so even if you have beaten the game once or twice, the story can still suck you in for a third, fourth or fifth time. (I myself played the game four times in succession before even beginning to write this review).

At the conclusion of the game, you are also directed to a web link where you can post your own story and compare it to everyone else’s. Although I strongly advise against doing this until you have completed the game, you can check out the stories here.

home-screenshot-03

Gameplay

Gameplay wise, Home is quite bare. It plays almost like an interactive choose-your-own-adventure novel than a full-fledged game. Don’t get me wrong, this is in no way a negative, as the gameplay matches the whole “minimalist” feel of the game, and still delivers an engaging experience that I personally have not seen rivaled by anything else the App Store has to offer.

To play Home, you tap on each side of your screen to move that direction, tap the top to look up, and double tap on objects to interact with them. The simplistic controls are all very fluid and response near instantly to your commands. This fluidity in the controls is helps the player stay engrossed in the game, while also offering a sense of urgency.

You build the game’s narrative by interacting with the objects in the world, and even the most minor of objects can turn out to have some deep and meaningful purpose later in the game.

home-screenshot-04

Visuals

You’d be forgiven for looking at Home’s visuals and thinking “this game can’t possibly scary. What are they trying to pull?” I mean, how often do you hear people say that something needs to look scary to be scary? Well Home stands proud as proof to the contrary.

Using a simplistic 8-bit style, Home still manages to perfectly convey the locations, objects and even the atmosphere. When you see blood on the wall, you know it is blood even though it is nothing more than a few brown/red pixels on a grey backdrop. Home really accomplishes amazing things with its limited art style. Even the character model, who has a leg injury since the beginning of the game, walks with a slight limp.

The game uses a flashlight to help you see where you are going, however it only offers limited vision. This limitation is a key part in making the horror experience really capture you. As the noise of a falling pan are happening in the background, you can only see a few feet in front of you. It makes you feel hopeless, lost and at times downright frightened.

home-screenshot-05

Audio

The audio in Home is one of its best features, and easily the part of the game that can suck you in the most. There is a haunting quietness through most of the game, only accentuated by the most minor of sound effects that perfectly fit the themes and tones of the situation. From the faint water drips in a leaky sewer, to the sound of a creaky, rusted pipe valve – everything sounds fantastic, and gives the world a sense of realness while drawing the player in.

home-screenshot-06

Overall

I normally like to go as in-depth as possible when writing a game’s review, but I don’t think I can do Home the justice it deserves, and trying to do so will just ruin this one of a kind experience for you guys. With its unique method of storytelling, simple controls and phenomenal art and sound, Home offers an interactive gaming experience unlike anything else on the App Store. Basically: Buy this game right now.

Rugby Challenge 2 PC Release Date Announced

Rugby-Challenge-2-Screenshot

Home Entertainment Suppliers (HES) today announced that Rugby Challenge 2: The Lions Tour Edition will be released for the PC (worldwide) on 25 July 2013. This news follows the original announcement of release dates for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions a few weeks ago. Whereas other developers offering a staggered PC release over their console ones go, this has been quick to follow, eager PC fans should be all the more happy.

HES also announced today that after holding a second Test Match Simulation, which saw the Qantas Wallabies and the British & Irish Lions go head to head in a bid to get a feel for the real match result, they can confirm that the Lions lost the test match by a narrow margin, with a final score of 13-10.

Hoppetee Review

  hoppetee-boxart-01

Hoppetee
Developer: Birgit Stock
Publisher: Birgit Stock
Platforms: iPhone (Reviewed), iPad
Release Date: Out Now
Price: $0.99 – Available Here

Overview

The iOS App Store is filled with endless runner games. Most of them stick to the same kind of formula, piggybacking off the success of Temple Run or Subway Surfers. Hoppetee stays clear of those sorts of games, but one can’t help but draw comparisons to Tiny Wings. You hold the screen to descend and speed up, and you let go to launch yourself into the air, timing your movements so that you can avoid traps and make it as far as you can. The game is not lacking in charm or cuteness, but it lacks a certain polish and is missing that ‘something’ that will keep drawing players back.

hoppetee-screenshot-01

Story

Hoppetee follows the exploits of a newly born grasshopper who cannot jump very high. As he can’t jump very high, he has trouble moving anywhere at a decent pace. As he is feeling lost and unsure of himself, Hoppetee discovers a bouncy-ball, and once he gets on it, he  realises that it can use it to roll across the country-side at great speed, or by bouncing as hard as he could, the ball will launch him into the air. Our young Hoppetee is filled with glee and excitement and off he begins on his journey across the world. The game’s narrative feels like it would fit at home in a children’s book and is told through a short, cutely-drawn cutscene at the beginning of the game.

hoppetee-screenshot-03

Gameplay

A lot of parallels can be drawn between Hoppetee and the much-loved Tiny Wings game from a few years back. The game plays by holding your finger on the screen, which causes t Hoppetee and his little ball to build up speed. Letting go of the screen launches you into the air. The trick is to time when you are holding and letting go of the screen to jump over obstacles such as; tall grass, reeds, bodies of water and hills, while gaining momentum on the down-hill slopes. The gameplay is simplistic and easy to grasp, but just feels a little sluggish and unresponsive. At times it seems like despite doing everything right, you will have slowed down to a snail’s crawl. Once you hit a snail’s pace it can also take some time to get your momentum and speed back up which is problematic, especially as you get to night time.

The game has a day/night cycle that directly affects the gameplay. During the day you are free to go about the game at your own speed, but once the sun sets you are forced to move as fast as you can, picking up the game’s collectables to keep you running as far as you can until either you reach the next day, or your firefly light burns out, ending your run.

hoppetee-screenshot-04

You pick up fireflies during both the day and the night and can hold up to three at a time. Once the sun sets, the fireflies start to slowly burn out and if you are caught with no more light before the sun rises again, you either have to give up the run, or fork out 300 Notes to keep going.

Notes are the other collectable available in Hoppetee. Notes fill three purposes; firstly is the aforementioned ‘continue’ that can be bought should you run out of fireflies during the night. The more prominent uses of notes however are as currency and to trigger the game’s Frenzy Mode. Frenzy mode happens when you collect enough notes in succession, and causes you to run faster and jump higher. Collecting more notes while in Frenzy Mode will extend its duration. The Notes can also be used to purchase in-game power-ups between runs. These power-ups will have you running faster, or jumping higher and collecting more notes in your following game. Unlike most endless-runners, the Notes only real purpose is to buy you things that will get you more notes. There are no permanent power-ups available, and the circular system of collecting notes so that you can collect more notes just ends up feeling shallow.

hoppetee-screenshot-02

Visuals

The game uses a really nice colour pallet – with a lot of greens and yellows that really reflect the game’s world. Hoppetee himself stands out, and has this huge infectious smile that just has you smiling along with him as you can see how damn happy he is to be riding along on that little ball.

The backgrounds are probably the most detailed part of the set, and all look great. They change through the course of the game so you aren’t looking at the same backdrop over and over again. The foreground has less charm to it, and the problem is that a lot of the detail that is in the foreground will go completely unnoticed to many players. For example, I didn’t notice that the foreground had mushrooms in it until I was specifically looking for visual things in the foreground to talk about.

hoppetee-screenshot-06

Audio

You know how the sound of a child at play can be the most humbling and sweet sound in the world? Well you also know how after about 5 minutes it can become the most infuriating thing on the planet? Yeah… Hoppetee’s voice is that of a child at play…I’m not making a cute metaphor here, his voice is literally the laughter and giggling of a five year old child. He laughs and says “Hooray!” when he jumps, and chuckles frequently. I’ll admit, the laughter, coupled with his incredible smile does fill you with a sense of joy, but it soon drains on you… Especially as you hear the same laughter replayed over and over.

hoppetee-screenshot-05

Overall

Hoppetee is a fine example of an endless runner. It has a lot of charm and character, and the titular character always has a massive smile across his mouth that is nothing if not infectious. It is held back by often sluggish controls, and sound effects that rapidly become very draining. All in all the game is still fun, but just lacks a certain something that makes you want to keep coming back. Regardless, if you are an endless runner fan who is looking for something new, then there is definitely some worth here.
