Q&A with Supanova’s Princess, Carrie Fisher

Carrier-Fisher-Feature-01

THE Princess Leia, Carrie Fisher, graced the Supanova Pop Culture Expo 2013 FilmInk theatre with her presence, and we all hung on her every word.

The geek icon made a grand entrance, accompanied by the 501st, Rebel Legion, Mandalorian Mercs and remote controlled R2-D2s (noises, flashing lights and all). Unfortunately, we couldn’t snap any pictures for you fine readers, because we were informed before her arrival that our special guest had requested no photos be taken during the panel…started off the session on a sour note, but once she made her way onto the stage, she captivated everyone with her innate charm and edgy, sometimes self-deprecating sense of humour. The following are some highlights (partially paraphrased) from the Q&A.

Carrie’s favourite scene to shoot from Star Wars was the first topic. She named one of the more memorable moments;

I really enjoyed killing Jabba the Hutt. And I recommend that any time you have the opportunity to kill a giant slug…I’m begging you to do it! You jut need a really heavy chain, and really you can saw their neck off! Anyway, I’m here to say, that has really made my life better. […] Learn that, it’s the main thing I can teach you.

She says she may even use that for the title of her next autobiography – which she is currently writing – “‘Kill Giant Sea Slugs When You Can…And Let That Make You Happy’ No, it’s too long.”  Carrie also played extremely coy regarding Disney‘s future Star Wars entries, calling them “just a rumour”. Her wit was displayed all throughout the Q&A;

Audience Member: As the main female character in a male dominated cast that influenced an entire generation, did you feel any pressure –

Carrie: – to go through the whole cast like wildfire? Oh, not at all! [Laughter]

Audience Member: No, to either at the time or later to be a role member for young women?

Carrie: Not consciously, but I think subconsciously that was my destiny. I’m a really bad role model though for some things, so don’t follow me for everything. But wear those clothes if you have a good body! And really give men as much shit as you possibly can. [Applause] They deserve it; they’ve earned it over time. It’s ours to give.

Carrie then explained her initial thoughts on the character and story when first reading the script;

I read the story out loud with a friend of mine, Miguel Ferrer – who became an actor – and we both wanted to play the part of Han Solo ’cause that was the best part. But it read fantastic. […] I mean I couldn’t imagine how they were going to pull it off so I definitely wanted to be in it given that they had a chance at pulling it off. So when I got the part, they told me I had to lose 15 pounds – I’ve since gained it back – so I thought I better lose that or they’ll fire me. So I kept thinking that they would realise they’d made a mistake, so I kept very quiet – which if you know me is unbelievable – and so when they put that awful hairstyle on me, that I’ve grown to love, they asked ” what do you think of this?” and I said “it’s fantastic”. So that’s why that exists. So I did whatever they said.

Carrie-Fisher-Awards-01
Not from the night, but she was wearing all black! She went to the dark side!

Now that Disney owns the Star Wars license, how does Carrie feel about her  animated company?;

Well, I hope there’s like a support group for the princesses. You know, “I’m Carrie and I’m a damsel not in distress” and stuff like that. […] So my peers are now Minnie Mouse and Sleeping Beauty, and I think that’s appropriate, and if you knew me you’d understand and you’d think it was right too.

The next question is one that many actors have had to answer in the past – how awkward is screen-kissing, really?

Well Harrison has said that he doesn’t like screen-kissing. It is weird; it’s kissing for money, and there’s something a little more extreme for that and there’s a word for it. I really enjoy watching other people screen kiss; Notorious – the movie with Cary Grant and Ingred Bergman – has the best screen kiss going ’cause they used to have a limit on how long you could hold the kiss which was 18 seconds or something, so they kept breaking it and talking and then kissing again. It’s fantastic. […] It’s certainly far from hot, I don’t think I can get more clear than that. And you’re very caught up in memorising your lines so you’re not apt to sort of go “ooh, wow…” or “ugh!”. You can’t, because you have your mind on this whole other thing. So the kissing is more than secondary.

Some in attendance saw fit to waste a question asking something that had already been asked. In this case, it was a child making the enquiry, so I’ll let it slide (I am the authority on these things after all). And so, Carrie was again asked what her favourite scene to shoot was, but across her whole career;

Well, like I said, I really liked killing Jabba. I liked shooting at John Belushi over and over and over again. And retrospectively, at the time I didn’t like it but, I do like seeing myself in the metal bikini because I did look good then, and I didn’t know it. So now I can look back and say “man, I should’ve paid attention”.

Back in 1978, punters predicted that Star Wars would be a flop. It was an entirely new and foreign concept, and people are scared of “new”. So the question was posed – were the actors and studio aware of this, and if so, did it have an effect on them?

Nobody knew. I mean I remember seeing it and thinking “wow, I’ve never seen anything like that”, but I was watching it two ways; I was thinking what a fat face that girl has and “what a cool movie!”. If they’d known it was gonna be a big hit they wouldn’t necessarily have booked us on a press tour of America – it didn’t need it. So they booked it like we were gonna have to slag this unpopular horse, and it was a very popular horse. So we just went around America and we were treated like rockstars!

Darth Vader was an over-bearing Father in other ways...
Darth Vader was an over-bearing Father in other ways…

As a side note at this point, apparently when Carrie gets serious she becomes British. She also joked that she wears the famous metal bikini while cleaning her dishes and vacuuming around the house. Focus then shifted to her interactions with Kevin Smith and if she had any stories from working on Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back;

No, not really. No, the only thing that I remember was that I almost got into a fight with Kevin. Because he believed – and this was when the internet was practically stone-age – someone that had told him that I said “Eh!” about the movie, and so he wrote me this frightening email. And he wrote me something not really nice about how they didn’t want to laugh at my tired jokes on set. And then he said he was sorry. Mainly I talked to Silent Bob about his heroin addiction and we had a lot of story swapping to do.

Wonder what her favourite scene or line from Star Wars was? Sound like a familiar question? Again…she really liked killing Jabba! Stop asking about it!;

“Put that thing away or you’re going to get us all killed!” […] I say that to naked men all the time. My favourite part of it? I keep telling you I liked killing that animal but you won’t believe mee! […] I like yelling things at people.

Harrison Ford is a tad bit notorious for being a grumpy guss on set. So what did Carrie have to say on the matter, from her own personal experiences shooting with him?;

Okay, well you know everybody in the early morning on set is not gonna be someone you want to talk to. But Harrison can be a lot of fun on set, but we were all kind of concentrating a lot. But Harrison can be a very serious guy, depending on how many beers he’s had. I got to be the only girl in an all boy fantasy, so that was fun and I was 19 years old – Harrison was 33 so he wasn’t skipping around and stuff.

This may seem like a no-brainer, as Carrie addresses her favourite piece of memorabilia from Star Wars;

Well, people keep asking me if I have the metal bikini, like I was wearing it that day and said “can I wear this home? Because I’m feeling really good in it.” That was actually made out of plastic or something so it was really uncomfortable.

This next answer was absolutely hilarious and shows just how witty and quick-on-her-feet Carrie is. She ad-libbed her ideal plot and storyline for the next Star Wars trilogy to be directed by J.J. Abrams. This is the tale she hopes is told;

That Harrison and I have been unhappily married for many, many years and that we speak through the wookies. We won’t talk to each other, you know, while we get some kind of translator or something. You know, like “R2, go tell that son of a bitch that I don’t…” And that we have children, but one of them looks a lot like Chewbacca. And they’re trying to get us to go to marital therapy with Yoda, as he’s opened a practice now on a planet somewhere, and that we do a lot of girl things this time. The men come with me and get waxed – I want Chewie to get waxed for sure. And that we do a lot of shopping, ’cause there could be some really cool things to buy now on Alderon – Alderon means mall in Tattooine. Roughly that’s the idea. And that I start sleeping with robots. Or I yell at him when I think he’s looking at one of the robot’s screws.

Leia-Jabba-01
No, guys, you don’t get it. She REEAALLLLY enjoyed killing Jabba the Hutt!

Another common question for celebrities of any kind – what was her reaction to seeing an action figure of her likeness for the very first time?;

I probably wanted to put it in a stew. Because it looks like an ingredient, doesn’t it? When something is ingredient sized, and it’s you, that’s confusing. I think I did go into therapy – I was already in therapy, but I had more to talk about! I wish that being merchandised was aerobic, but it’s not.

I’ve already mentioned the 501st, Rebel Legion and the rest of her entourage, but up until now they were simply mannequins, stood by the sides of the stage while Carrie regaled us with stories. But for this next question, the presence of one member of the lot in particular – Darth Vader (not, not really him…he’s dead, right?!), really enhanced the answer. What was it like finding out that Darth Vader was her father?;

Isn’t that a bitch?! I mean, I’ve never really done well in that department. I mean I love my father…but none of the fathers I’ve had have actually been dads, you know? I mean, look at Darth; he doesn’t look like someone that would come to school on Father’s Day or help you with your homework. But it would be interesting if he did. Or walk me down the aisle and give me away.

Before Star Wars was released, there had definitely been some great science-fiction movies, but it really blew up with George Lucas’ space opera. A younger member of the audience was wondering if Carrie ever had an interest in the genre, and if she does now;

I liked 2001 and pretended I knew what it was about. I saw it when I was like 13 and someone asked me what it was about and I think I said, “infinity”. […] I really like 3D. Anything that people – not me – who take hallucinogens, which your Mum will explain later, would like to watch, I would like to watch also.

And finally, comedy fans out there will appreciate this question – what was it like shooting that episode of 30 Rock with Alec Baldwin and the rest of that amazing cast?;

My favourite thing was that they did let me be the technical consultant on how many prescription bottles should be on the set of an addict. So I had to cut it down; they had too many pills and it didn’t look realistic. A real addict would hide them.

To end on a feel-good moment, when asked what her greatest achievement in her life has been, Carrie said her daughter. Awww. “She’s a grade-A student, and she’s at NYU and she’s pretty and she likes me now!”. Oh and we came away from the session breathing a sigh of relief…if you’ve ever been concerned that Carrie may lose it one day and go on a rampage down your street in a tank, she says she’s “not good of a driver, so that would be tricky.” I can sleep easy now.

Jack Keane 2: The Fire Within
Developer: Deck 13
Publisher: Nordic Games
Platforms: PC (Reviewed)
Release Date: June 28, 2013 – Available Here

Overview
Jack Keane is a man of adventure. Jack Keane is a man of passion. Jack Keane is a man…who leaps before he looks. Deck 13 and Nordic Games have brought him back for his second adventure with some new faces. How does this new point-and-click adventure handle itself? Is it a beacon to be lauded or should the fire within be smoldered? Let’s find out.

jack-keane-screenshot-01

Story
When the game opens, Jack is trapped in an oriental prison. His roommate is an elderly shaman who bestows Jack with the first piece of an amulet and a mind altering trip inside Jack’s own head before passing away. After working his way through the prison, Jack meets up with his love interest, the beautiful tomboy Amanda. What follows is a whirlwind trip around the world to find the other pieces of the mysterious amulet before the rich Mr. Umbati. Jack and friends will have to solve puzzles at every turn and work out their feelings in the process if they’re to have any chance of success!

Gameplay
The point-and-click adventure game genre has been around for nearly as long as video games have been popular. Classics such as LucasArts’ Maniac Mansion and Secret of Monkey Island franchises helped to cement the genre into the landscape of video games forever more. Anyone who has experienced one of those classic games will feel right at home here.

jack-keane-screenshot-05

For those new to the genre, the gameplay mechanics are easy enough to follow. You will use the mouse cursor to move your characters around within the environment. You can add objects in the environment to your inventory, examine things in the world for more information, and use your inventory to solve environmental puzzles.  The puzzles are generally pretty well designed, and solving also lets you enjoy watching a scene unfold.

Jack Keane 2 also offers players the ability to move around the environments using the WASD controls on their keyboard, but they’re ultimately a concession that acknowledge the world has progressed beyond the basic tenets of the genre.

One of the most pronounced characteristics of Jack Keane 2 is the way it uses humor to flesh out the world. Like Guybrush Threepwood and others before him, Jack and his companions always have a joke at the ready. Not all of them land, but there are definitely enough funny moments to keep you looking forward to the next. The comedy generally blends into the puzzles as well, often employing absurd solutions to the problems you’ll face.

jack-keane-screenshot-04

As you play, you’ll quickly realize that Jack and his traveling companions have more than the amulets and sailing around the world on their minds. You’ll get to witness and influence how certain love stories play out. Jack will definitely have his hands full sorting out that mess.

One of the weakest components of the game is its hand-to-hand combat sequences. These typically consist of seeing your enemies first attack, using a specific “stance” to avoid the attack, and then countering with an attack of your own. Though this fits in the line of it being a puzzle-solving game, it lacks any real sense of impact and presents itself as another obstacle to conquer. The combat does employ a slow-motion aspect that lends some redemption to the combat, but it gets old after a while.

Though the point-and-click gameplay is fantastic, the game is not without a few annoyances. Misusing items in the pursuit of solving a puzzle will lead you to hear the same phrase voiced by actors over and over again. This could lead you resenting  those voiced lines. Character pathing also seems to hang up more than occasionally, which can be a real problem if you’re clicking an item on the other side of the screen.

jack-keane-screenshot-03

Game glitches also still rear their ugly heads on occasion. Realizing seven or eight steps into a puzzle the item you need won’t register with your mouse click is pretty frustrating, especially since you’ll likely have to reload before you picked up that item and work through the puzzle again.

Visuals & Audio
Jack Keane 2: The Fire Within is a fantastic looking game. The environments are rich and colorful, helping each location feel unique and alive. The color palette and art style lend the game a light-hearted ambiance. This makes the game feel like it takes place in a comic book or Saturday morning cartoon, where humor is expected and whimsy runs free. Thanks to the graphic design, characters and environments  feel vibrant and alive.

The audio design in Jack Keane 2 is nothing spectacular. It’s not bad, but it won’t win any awards either. The voice over work in Jack Keane 2 is decent. Most of the complaint can placed on the script, which is set up to be campy to begin with. It doesn’t help that you may sometimes hear the same phrase several times while working through a puzzle, too. Apart from that, it’s not bad, which is considerable since there’s so much of it in the game.

jack-keane-screenshot-02

The music is upbeat and entertaining. Most of what will stick with you are lighthearted tunes that never feel unwelcome, even if they occasionally feel out of place. I can only imagine this works so well because it’s a good way to offset some of the frustration you’ll experience when working through some of the game’s harder puzzles or bugged encounters.

Overall
Overall, Jack Keane 2: The Fire Within is a great adventure game. If you can work past the occasional glitch or repetitive phrase, the game has a lot to offer. The characters and environment are vibrant and inviting, the puzzles are clever and fun to solve, and the story is entertaining as well. The comedy never feels forced and you’ll get a few chuckles along the way too. On top of that, the game looks great and the music is catchy and upbeat. If you’re a fan of adventure games, you should definitely take the time to go on an adventure with Jack Keane and his companions.

Oreimo OVAS To Be Aired In August

Oreimo-Episode-11-Screenshot-Pic
Fans of the anime Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai (or Oreimo for short) will be happy to know that three OVA specials will all be airing on the same day two months after the final episode of the second season.

Episode 13 will air on the 30th of June and the OVAS are set to air on the 18th of August, the official anime page for Oreimo will be streaming all episodes and have also provided links for international viewers on where they can watch the simulcasts. Click here to check out the official site. Currently the anime show is being simulcasted by Crunchyroll, who will also be simulcasting the OVAS in August with the help of Aniplex.

This year marks the end of Oreimo for both the anime and the original light novel; the 12th and final volume was released earlier this month and was meet with extremely mixed reactions from its fans. Speaking as someone who already knows the ending (don’t worry I won’t give any spoilers), I predict this will get more rages from people than the whole Aku no Hana debate.

Let us know what you think of Oreimo by commenting down below (no spoilers please).

Meet Stonewall in New Scourge: Outbreak Trailer

scourge-outbreak-stonewall-01

Not too long ago, we brought you news that UFO Interactive and Tragnarion were planning on bringing the popular third person shooter Scourge: Outbreak to the Xbox Live Arcade and have completely overhauled the original, with new features such as a four player co-op mode, achievements, and more hitting the platform.

Today, it is time to take a closer look as a new trailer has been released, detailing one of your squadmates known as Victor “Stonewall” Dantrix.

Here are some details on this Echo Squad leader:

A former US Ranger and sixth generation Army Officer, Victor “Stonewall” Dantrix has his crosshairs on the Nogari Corporation for a research experiment gone wrong. Compelled by the promise of having his named cleared once and for all, Stonewall was framed for a catastrophic airstrike “cleansing,” which left him as the only survivor out of hundreds. Dishonorably discharged and disgraced, Stonewall was sentenced to execution only to escape for a life on the run. Now he must keep Echo Squad together and eliminate Nogari.

Specializing in mid-range assault and tactical combat, Stonewall can take a beating and easily pay one back in double. While he may not be a tank like Mass, or nimble like Amp, Stonewall is 100% mission-oriented and determined to eliminate enemies efficiently. His Zen-like balance of recoil control and accuracy gives him a keen trigger finger, particularly when equipped with an assault rifle. Naturally, Stonewall is perfect for close combat situations. Never giving an inch of ground, his Ambrosia Suit’s Static Shield locks into place, allowing Echo Squad to return fire and decimate enemies from safety. Additionally, Stonewall’s Static Shockwave will let Nogari know he means business. Once he’s in range, he makes sure nobody gets away.

For just 800 points, I would say Scourge looks like it will fit right in on the Xbox Live Arcade and seems to be quite refreshing for the service due to the lack of third-person shooters on the service. Scourge: Outbreak launches on July 3rd, but you can check out the shiny new trailer down below.

Anthony Montgomery At Supanova Sydney 2013

Anthony-Montgomery-Supanova-2013-02
Star Trek fans were in for a treat this year at Supanova, with Anthony Montgomery doing a Q&A right after Manu Intiraymi. Known for his role in Star Trek: Enterprise, Montgomery ran to the stage with great cheer and applause. Upon getting on stage he began telling a story of a woman he met in Australia back 2001 who had a Star Trek: Enterprise tattoo. To his surprise, he quickly learnt that woman was at the panel where he thanked her for her support and said that she was his “hero”. The panel was off to a great start!

Montgomery wanted to spend a lot of his time on stage promoting his new graphic novel, Miles Away, which he began back in 2001 while Star Trek: Enterprise was still on the air. Miles Away is set to be a transmedia franchise with an animated series and possibly a live action show in the works as well as the graphic novels. For more information on Miles Away, fans can check out the official website or purchase it here. He also told a story about how the previous night while watching a rugby game he was told he would not leave Australia alive if he didn’t go for the Wallabies and that he thought Australian Football was much more violent than American Football.

Anthony-Montgomery-Supanova-2013-01

Montgomery was more than happy to talk about his time in Star Trek: Enterprise answers many fan questions. When asked about working with Scott Bakula, he said Scott was one of the nicest people he’d ever met and considered him a mentor as he was a big fan of his film Quantum Leap. He also made a strong point that he tried to avoid embarrassing moments as he did whatever possible to make sure he was never the reason why a production wasn’t moving forward. He also made mention that his favourite moments in the series was when the whole cast were together because he felt those moments were rare in the series and he felt like they were a family. He also said the episode “Horizon” was a favourite of his as Travis’ backstory was explored quite a bit and he “really got to do something.”

Anthony-Montgomery-Supanova-2013-04

When asked about what he’d like to see with the future of Star Trek, Anthony Montgomery gave some rather interesting answers. His suggestion was perhaps after another movie, maybe they would do another TV series. His idea was that these new movies might be to excite fans about Star Trek again, then bring it back to a TV series format. Also, it was mentioned that when Star Trek: Enterprise was cancelled because “the fans needed a break” he felt that “we all knew that was BS”. Montgomery felt that they wanted to do something “different” they needed to “get rid of Rick and Brandon”. Again this is just what he felt, but he did say he knew other reasons why it was cancelled but he couldn’t share them. Anthony Montgomery left with the final thoughts that he was grateful that the new J.J. Abrams films showed homage to older series and he was a part of the franchise, concluding with that Star Trek will still be here long after we’re all plant food.

For more on Anthony Montgomery, you can follow him on Twitter or like his Facebook page.
