VFX Studio Pixomondo Lauds Dell Infrastructure

Pixomondo-Logo-01

Visual effects studio Pixomondo have revealed and praised the complete Dell solution – comprised of Dell Precision workstations, Dell PowerEdge servers, Dell PowerVault storage and Dell UltraSharp monitors – that they relied on to tackle the animation and VFX work necessary for bringing Game of Thrones Season 2 and Star Trek Into Darkness to life.

Sven Martin and Ben Grossmann, visual effects supervisors at Pixomondo, said of the experience;

We started to work on ‘Game of Thrones’ for season two, taking the job of creating all the visual effects for that series. This was an enormous undertaking on a TV series with a tight schedule, and thanks to the speed and reliability we get from our Dell workstations, monitors, servers and storage, and the tremendous support we get from Dell’s IT support, we were not only able to meet the tough expectations, we were also brought on for season three. – Martin

It was exceptionally rewarding and very challenging to work on the Star Trek franchise and create something new that would still pay homage to the original. The Dell workstations and servers gave us tremendous computational firepower to render the massive 3D images around the clock. – Grossmann

GameOfThrones-Dragons-Season2-01

Specifically, to fully realise effects on Game of Thrones, such as exploding ships and the 3 dragons of fan favourite Daenerys Targaryen – ‘Mother of Dragons’ – Pixomondo utilised Dell Precision T5500 and T5600 tower workstations to create the complex content quickly and Dell UltraSharp U2410, U2711 and U2312HM monitors for clear and detailed display. The studio also used Dell PowerVault MD3220 and MD1220 storage and Dell PowerEdge R410, R620 and R720 servers in its render farm for quick segment turnaround, allowing for more rounds of tweaking, and ultimately a better final product before deadline.

For the great Star Trek Into Darkness, Pixomondo was challenged with creating 380 pivotal shots that would satisfy the unique expectations of a fan base spanning 50 years. To do so, they worked on Dell Precision T7600 and T5500 workstations with NVIDIA Quadro K4000 graphics cards, Dell UltraSharp U2410 monitors and Dell PowerEdge R510, R410 and R310 servers. Among other things, the hardware enabled the team to push the limits on action-packed sequences of the film such as the attack on Starfleet Headquarters, high-speed pursuit above the Klingon home world of Kronos and the ensuing battle on the surface of the entirely computer graphics (CG) generated world.

The infrastructure also allowed teams across the world, from London to Stuttgart, Los Angeles, Frankfurt, Beijing and Burbank, to collaborate on projects without missing a beat, with Dell’s global media solution allowing Pixomondo to sync large amounts of data across them while greatly reducing storage costs. Vice president of tablet and performance PCs at Dell, Neil Hand, said;

We are constantly striving to provide our customers with high performing and reliable solutions for their specific needs. We are always amazed by the visual effects work Pixomondo develops, which are among the best in the industry, on our technology; it represents the epitome of our ‘Power to Do More’ philosophy.

Pixomondo went on to create the digital creatures and hero environments for Season 3 of the increasingly, insanely popular Game of Thrones and will continue to work on the series for future seasons.

Tactical Intervention To Freely Intervene On Steam

tactical-intervention-steam-01
Drive, Smithers, drive!

The hotly anticipated multiplayer FPS title Tactical Intervention by Counter Strike co-creator, Minh “Gooseman” Le, will be free to play worldwide this August on Steam for PC thanks to publisher 1337 Games.

Tactical Intervention was previously released only in North America in March, but the servers have since come down on June 10 due to a lack of players and various other issues. The fact the game blocked IP addresses from outside the US and Canada may or may not have contributed to its swift but temporary demise.

Hey is that $100 bill on the ground?

Those few who managed to play it, and those who haven’t, fear not! The game is being resurrected on Steam where it will be hopefully noticed this time and released as a stable game. Headed by a former Valve employee of seven years, Tactical Intervention is a team-based tactical shooter inspired by the classics of the genre such as Counter Strike and created by the team at Fix Korea.

Check out our recent interview with the Gooseman himself for some nifty insight on the game and its long journey to release.

Further news has come in following the announcement of the two sequels to the live-action Rurouni Kenshin regarding the casting for the films which will now be titled Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire and Rurouni Kenshin: The End of a Legend. Yaoran broke the news that the villain of both films, the infamous Shishio, has officially been cast.

Popular Japanese actor Tatsuya Fujiwara (Death Note’s Light Yagami and Battle Royale’s Shuya Nanahara) has been tapped to play the bandage clad antagonist in both films. The films themselves are based upon the legendary ‘Kyoto arc’ of the Rurouni Kenshin manga. Both movies are slated for release in 2014. Stay tuned for more details as they come to light.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII pre-orderers net Cloud’s costume and Buster Sword

Lightning-Returns-Final-Fantasy-XII-cloud-costume

There has always been a number of people who would say that Lightning is the new Cloud in Square Enix‘s eyes and it seems that the company has finally decided they might as well take advantage of this. Today the company announced that anyone who pre-orders Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII in North America will be able to get a Cloud Strife costume which includes a Buster Sword.

Square Enix has also said that equipping the Cloud costume will give players not only some of Cloud’s abilities but also his battle winning pose and fanfare music. Currently Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is set to be released on February 11, 2014 so it’ll be quite some time before at least Cloud’s outfit and weapon appear in an HD game.

Puzzle Tangram Style Headed to the 3DS eShop

tangram-style-01

Not to be confused with the terrible pop culture song from 2012, Tangram Style is the first 3DS title from mobile developer Moving Player, and a sharp little puzzler that is set to bring some spunk to the genre on the platform.

This little romp features 600 puzzles and 4 games modes for players to get a hold of, and will available on the eShop at a later date. In my opinion, this title seems to bring some color and life to the shape puzzles included, with bonus objectives that are sure to add some re-playability. Check out the first set of screenshots and trailer down below, and once Tangram Style gets some more info, we will be sure to share.
