Xbox One TV Advertisement is an Invitation

Xbox-Invitation-Titanfall-01

Today marks the launch of Microsoft‘s official Xbox One marketing campaign, inviting potential consumers around the world to “jump ahead” and experience all of your gaming and entertainment needs all-in-one place: Xbox One from November 22.

The television ad, called “Invitation” (viewable at the bottom of this article), features superstars like actor Zachary Quinto and footballer Steven Gerrard, as well as a real McLaren P1 driven by a professional (with “do not attempt” warned below… who possesses a McLaren P1 anyway?!). In it, all entertainment – from FIFA 14 to Star Trek Into Darkness – come to life. It’s aimed at everyone, really… cinephiles, gamers, sports fans and TV lovers alike. The Xbox One television campaign hits TV screens in the U.S. October 27’s during Sunday Night Football on NBC before rolling out across 11 other major markets worldwide.

To celebrate the launch of Xbox One we have designed one of our most integrated and comprehensive global campaigns ever.  The campaign is a celebration of our fans – an invitation to a new generation of games and entertainment.  And it showcases experiences that only Xbox One can deliver. Through the authenticity of the ads, to a massive 75 city experiential tour, to social campaigns that encourage their participation, to creative media executions that let fans become directly involved – we are inviting the world to celebrate the launch of Xbox One. – Robert Matthews, General Manager of Consumer Marketing, Xbox

If the large audience found viewing Sunday Night Football at home isn’t already a satisfactory enough reach, the ad – directed by award-winning director Bryan Buckley with visual effects from The Mill – will also air in commercial breaks for mega-hits like The Big Bang Theory, X Factor, Saturday Night Live, Modern Family, The Walking Dead, Sons of Anarchy, Duck Dynasty and much more. Matthews continued;

The ads were designed to celebrate that for the first time, the best in gaming is coming together with the best of entertainment, all-in-one place.Authenticity was a key goal for the campaign design, from including one of only three McLaren P1’s in the world to represent ‘Forza Motorsport 5,’ to including Liverpool football star and England national team captain Steven Gerrard, to actor Zachary Quinto representing Spock.

We’ll also be engaging with fans on social networks, including our fans on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. We’ll have rich interactive experiences on our own websites, as well as others. Fans will also be able to participate in promotional programs with some of their favorite brands including Doritos and Mountain Dew. We’re looking forward to celebrating with our fans and connecting with them in numerous ways over the coming months.

pokemon-x-y-screenshot-01

Following the news that Pokemon X and Pokemon Y will be getting critical bug fixes, Nintendo has released an update on the Nintendo eShop strongly advising all players to download and install it. Current copies of the software will display “1.1” after the update.

The update prevents the issue of Pokemon players unable to resume playing after saving in the outer area of Lumiose City. Those who are already affected will have their problem fixed after the update. It also prevents errors which can occur when using certain functions of the GTS system in the game.

Game Freak has managed to roll out the patch fairly quickly since the problem was reported, and the news will come as a saving grace for many Pokemon Trainers out there.

The Lame Game Marathon 3 Begins Tomorrow!

lgm3_logo
It’s for a good cause

Beginning at 10am (ADST) on Saturday the 26th of October, Aussie Gamers Dan, Mark and Dukey will begin on another 24 hour quest through some the worst games ever made while putting their abject suffering on display for the world to see. With the goal of raising money for UNICEF,  Everyone is welcome to tune in and make a donation, plus be entertained as their fatigue and frustration is streamed for your amusement.

Covering a wide scope of Lame Gaming history from 1990 through to 2013, the guys at the LGM3 have picked some of the most notorious games as well as some of the most obscure. Rest assured though, they are all hilariously and tragically bad in their own right. The line-up of shame includes:

  • Fast and Furious: Showdown (PC)
  • Night Tap (Sega CD)
  • King of Crusher (PS1)
  • Aquaman (Gamecube)
  • Daikatana (PC)
  • Ride to Hell: Retribution (PC)
  • Navy SEALs: WMD’s (PC)
  • Virtual Hydlide (Sega Saturn)
  • Cho Aniki (PS1)
  • Dragon’s Lair NES (NES)
  • Police Force (PC)
  • Michigan: Report from Hell (PS2)
  • Zelda CDi: Faces of Evil (CDi)
  • Wild Woody (SegaCD)
  • Agricultural Simulator 2011 (PC)

Outside of the official line up, you can expect to see a few extra bonus games to make an appearance throughout the marathon, such as EA’s recently disowned 2D fighter, Shaq Fu, and the slow and sluggish Sonic-themed racer, Sonic-R.

We understand that these games are seriously bad, and anybody who has had to play these games at any point has clearly been wronged by fate in the worst possible way. Still, the LGM3 team understand that these games just didn’t materialise out of thin air, they were made by people. Real people, just like you and me. People who enjoy games. People who loved games enough to base an entire career around making them. In fact, it’s a fair assumption to say that these people probably had no intention of making a bad game at all when they first put pen to paper, so with that in mind, the Lame Game Marathon team has prepared a very special message, just for these developers, just to show that we understand.

Thanks to some incredibly generous supporters, there will be a load of amazing prizes to be given away throughout the Lame Game Marathon 3. All you have to do is tune in to the festivities and find out how to win. The prizes include:

  • Turtle Beach Ear Force Wireless Headsets thanks to Tiltify
  • copies of Battlefield 4 thanks to EA Australia
  • collectors editions of Hitman Absolution and Tomb Raider thanks to Namco Bandai
  • copies of Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Trine 2, Project Zomboid, Gratuitous Space Battles and Escape Goat from dbolical.com
  • and many more awesome prizes!

After having raised a total of $7,300 last year, the LGM3 team is hoping to smash their previous total in order to help UNICEF fund the fantastic work they do for children across the world.  UNICEF’s efforts help to improve the rights and welfare of underprivileged children in over 191 countries by providing health services, education, vaccinations and access to clean water; as well as providing much needed emergency response in times of crisis. UNICEF work to improve the lives of children who have never known the privileges most of us have taken for granted whilst growing up, so the LGM team wants to do what they can to support such a good cause.

So tune in 10am sharp and watch 3 poor souls force their way through a trial of mediocrity as they do their darndest to raise money for a good cause. For more information, visit the official site and Facebook page. Check out the screenshots below for a taste of the games to come and, if you feel in the giving mood, donations can be made here. Why play these games yourself when you can get someone else to do it?

Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise Review

royal-space-force-the-wings-of-honneamise-box-art
Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise
Studio: Gainax
Publisher: Maiden Japan
Format: DVD, Blu-ray (Reviewed)
Release Date: October 15, 2013
Price: $39.98 – Available Here

Overview
With the demise of Bandai Visual in the West it was only a matter of time before numerous titles that they had under their label would be picked up by other companies and it just so happens that Section 23 has grabbed Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise to release under their Maiden Japan line. The movie which originally was released back in 1987 was given high praise back in the day and now that the movie has been released on Blu-ray, does it still hold up?

Story
In a world quite similar to our own, two nations are at the brink of war. The Kingdom of Honneamise and “The Republic” are both prospering in an industrial era where science is booming and man is looking to the stars with a space program. However even while scientists and astronauts are attempting to make their way into space, trouble on the ground sees the nations about to enter a war that will spell catastrophe for both sides if started.

After attending the funeral of a fellow astronaut, a man named Shirotsugh Lhadatt who previously was the most unmotivated man in the program that simply coasted through life is thrust into a series of events that see him inspired by a woman named Riquinni to become the first man in space. Even with his volunteering to become the first man in space, there is much more to this plan that meets the eye.

With Shiro thrust into the spotlight and forced to undergo the most intense training he has ever experienced, disastrous plans are being built around the launch. Thus begins a story of a man coming to terms with himself and working towards a goal intertwined with a technological race to launch a man into space before the world erupts in warfare.

wings-of-honneamise-review- (1)

Now when The Wings of Honneamise was created the cold war between the United States and the U.S.S.R. was still an issue. Both sides of the cold war could easily have brought devastation to the world if either one were to misstep and the space aspect of The Wings of Honneamise is a clear example of that, especially with the sinister plans built around the innocent seeming launch of a man into space are revealed to be a ploy to kick off a war between the nations.

While Shiro does learn of these plans down the line, throughout the film he is portrayed as a clearly flawed character. Not only does he have issues with the job he wants to try and undertake but the emotional turmoil of being a star begins to take its toll on the young man, even causing him to almost snap and enter a dark territory with the same person who inspired him to follow this dream only to then be redeemed by the kindness and forgiveness in that same person’s heart.

By the time that The Wings of Honneamise ends, viewers will follow Shiro on an emotional journey that sees him grow as a man and undertake a daunting task that many once thought impossible even. The climactic moment is more impactful thanks to the situation it takes place in, leaving viewers not only with hope but also a final heartfelt monologue by Shiro that makes The Wings of Honneamise an unforgettable movie.

Visuals
As you read at the start, The Wings of Honneamise takes was animated back in the late ‘80s but despite its age, the movie has made the upgrade to Blu-ray quite splendidly. This fact can be attributed to the quality of animation back in the day and the old-school art style is definitely one of the impressive aspects of the film. Character designs are similar to what one would remember from that era of animation but still remain impressive to this day.

wings-of-honneamise-review- (2)

As for attention to detail, Gainax was truly an impressive team back in the day when they were assembled to create The Wings of Honneamise as everything is intricately designed, from the uniforms of the characters to the designs of the environment and much more. It is worth noting that there are a few minor transfer issues as some of the artwork has suffered a bit due to the age of the production but for the most part the movie is incredibly presented with this release.

Audio
It is worth noting that The Wings of Honneamise contains the original English dub as well as the Japanese voice track and while many may be able to enjoy the English voice track it may be best to listen to the Japanese track instead. While the English is nicely handled, it hasn’t aged as well and seems a bit liberal with various translations meaning that those who want the best experience may wish to stick to the Japanese voice track instead.

wings-of-honneamise-review- (3)

As for various sound effects, the movie boats some pretty impressive audio work when it comes to the launch of the ship and other elements of the movie. Unfortunately the same can’t be said for the movie’s less than stellar soundtrack. While there are a few nice pieces of background music played to help emphasize important moments, the rest is fairly mediocre and forgettable.

Extras
Unfortunately Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise has no bonus content of any value. The only bonuses are trailers for two other anime from Maiden Japan and the Japanese trailers for the movie.

Overall
Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise may be one of the older anime films to be released in the West but until this release, I had never heard of the movie nor had many of my anime viewing friends. This is a sad turn of events because despite its age, The Wings of Honneamise is a very impressive movie in many regards, making it a classic that deserves to be more well-known than it is.
