Kokoro Connect Original Anime Selection
Studio: Silver Link
Publisher: Hanabee
Format:
DVD (reviewed), Blu-ray
Release Date: January 8, 2014
Price: $29.99 – Available Here

Overview
After an inconclusive ending to the Kokoro Connect TV series, reviewed earlier, it seemed a continuation was inevitable despite the series ending at a comfortable length of 13 episodes. The story, however, is far from resolved. A certain member of the group wasn’t so sure if she loved Taichi and the deviously sinister Heartseed is still a threat.

A set of four OVA episodes, titled Kokoro Connect: Michi Random in Japanese, were released after a brief wait and it reignited the chaotic relationships between the characters. At just four episodes long, is it worth opening up old wounds and winding the clock back with this release by Hanabee?

Story
If you were curious to know just what the four Kokoro Connect OVA episodes contained, you wouldn’t learn much from reading the blurb alone. In fact, the blurb is identical to the one found on the back of the Kokoro Connect TV series, word by word. Which is a little odd as the website does have a unique blurb for this release. To clear up the confusion, this is a direct sequel and not just a side story or filler which makes it rather important for fans in order for them to know the full story.

Our friends Taichi, Iori, Himeko, Yoshifumi and Yui are once again caught up in the machinations of the Heartseed, multiple entities that possess their homeroom teacher, who kicks off the bizarre phenomenon of the kids switching bodies at random. The OVA focuses on the character that has the most issues in life, Iori Nagase. Iori was previously known to have put up a facade, hiding her true self and putting up with family problems at home.

Iori had conflicting feelings at the end of the Kokoro Connect TV series, either unsure of whether she actually likes Taichi romantically or if she’s comfortable with him not knowing her true self. This time, however, the Heartseed throws in a cruel change to the game, allowing one’s thoughts to be transmitted among the group. Those who have the most to hide will undoubtedly crumble, and as the first OVA episode states, Iori “breaks” as her true thoughts are revealed.

kokoro-connect-ova-screen-02

What follows is a fairly ugly story arc that’s full of conflict and teenage angst. As Iori isolates herself, the friends must work even harder than ever to keep their friendship intact. It’s interesting how effective these four episodes are, packing in more drama and intensity than the previous 13 episodes. The narrative in Kokoro Connect Original Anime Selection tends to bombard you even more, demonstrating more than ever the importance of being true to yourself and those around you.

I mentioned in the review of the TV series how this angst can be a little too much, making you fidget in your chair out of frustration, wishing the characters would stop repeating themselves whenever an argument breaks out. This is, however, mostly subjective. as it’s all part of the chaotic mess that the Heartseed (which is never properly explained) brings forth.

Most importantly, the OVA collection offers a satisfying conclusion to the whole series. While the Heartseed, which is seemingly omniscient and as expected will never disappear entirely, is still a potential threat, the group of friends come to terms with each other. After many trials, their hearts connected and the bonds that were formed are now seemingly unbreakable.

Visuals
The animation quality in the Kokoro Connect OVA episodes by studio Silver Link is maintained to the standards of the TV series that came before. Characters look like normal high school kids but each one has a unique, easily identifiable look. Otherwise, the visuals will not be a talking point for Kokoro Connect including these final four episodes.

The environments and lighting in the OVA episodes look a little more bleak than before, possibly reflecting Iori’s isolation and the strained relations with her friends. Also to consider is that for the duration of these episodes, the anime is set during the cold winter months, with a splash of colour seen in the final episode as the cherry blossoms bloom.

Audio
Kokoro Connect Original Anime Selection continues the mighty fine voice work of Japanese actors, featuring heavyweights such as Aki Toyosaki (K-ON! – Yui Hirasawa) and Hisako Kanemoto (Squid Girl) among others to express the heavy emotions present in the series while simply sounding pleasant when things are quiet.

Unfortunately the English dub remains rather woeful, with Greg Ayres in particular putting on a bizarre and unnecessarily grating voice for the lead character Taichi. There are anime that should be heard in English, but this isn’t one of them. Sadly, this seems like a result of more anime being localised than ever before but the English voice talent either can’t keep up with the workload or the quality talent is being reserved to just the major releases. Whichever it is, I hope to see an improvement in lesser known anime releases.

If there is any one word describe the audio here in general it is “quiet”. The music doesn’t stand out whatsoever, leaving more room for the tumultuous conversations and teary arguments. The ambient music that you do hear is mainly a peaceful harmonica and soft piano melodies. The opening and ending themes have also changed for the OVAs (and for the better in my opinion), offering two pleasant tracks. “Kimi Rhythm” by Masaki Imai is an acoustic, upbeat opening theme while “Scream Chocolatl” by Team Nekokan feat. Lia is a thoughtful ballad with a nice beat.

kokoro-connect-ova-screen-05

Overall
What this “Original Anime Selection” is is a two-hour, $30 conclusion to the Kokoro Connect series, taking the episode count up to 17 from the original 13. For those that enjoyed the series, these OVAs are a must in order to finish the story and enjoy what is a relieving and satisfying ending.

If you weren’t too big on the TV series, these admittedly won’t do much to change your mind but it’s worth pointing out that these four episodes brought the point across more succinctly and with greater emotional intensity.

Nobunagun Episode 3 Impressions

Nobunagun-Episode-3-01
Training? She seems capable enough already

Nobunagun
Gun No. 3: Capa’s Island

Having already steeled her resolve last episode, Ogure Sio takes her first true step into the world of monster fighting: training. Though she has shown that she possesses great potential, her lack of basic combat skills makes her as much of a liability as she is an asset. So it’s off to a humid little island off the coast of who knows where to see if Sio has the mettle to face enemies of such a high calibre.

After landing on the island, Sio is promptly driven into a forest and left behind by Saint Germain, who then drives into a tree and explodes…not the most ideal start to training. Sio is then met with a number of EIO (Evolutionary Invasion Objects) and, after wasting ammunition like a champion, is subsequently stabbed through the heart…damn. Well it’s been a fun series, I liked the bit with the big gun the most. What’s that? It was all a simulation? Yeah…that does make more sense than a three episode series…OK, so nobody is dead. Saint Germain pulled a fast one on Sio and enlisted the help of another E-Gene Holder to train her. Bearing the spirit of Robert Capa, a famous wartime photographer, he possesses the unique ability to create reproductions and, in turn, training simulations. With complete control of that which he creates, Capa can provide Sio with any number of situations that can help her improve. While it definitely seems fortuitous that such a power exists in the E-Gene pool, it definitely serves to showcase the scope and variation of said powers.

Nobunagun-Episode-3-02
They seem like friendly chaps

We also learn a little more about the E-Gene powers, courtesy of Saint Germain’s lectures. When active, AU weapons provide their wielder with enhanced durability and strength, explaining how Jack the Ripper managed to survive. Sio’s sudden tactical knowledge is also revealed to be the effect of a Mental Rush, something experienced by every E-Gene Holder. However, these rushes are unique to each person, perhaps hinting at Sio’s uncharacteristic behaviour during the fight in Taiwan. As a further part of her training, she learns that as a manifestation of her mind, she has the power to alter her weapon to a degree. So far, she has managed to rein in her power and leaned that she can alter the explosive power of each individual round. Something sure to come in handy.

Over the course of her training, Sio comes to understand her lack of skill wielding her weapon. Recoil still throws her aim off to an unsightly degree and she has difficulty hitting anything other than a stationary target. Not the optimal skill set for one of the few hopes left for the world. Her studies take on another level of importance when the DOGOO Commander specifically notes her status as a sniper. From a tactical stand point, though they have a plethora of cool powers, the E-Gene Holders would benefit greatly from a long ranged ally. This is an interesting element in the anime as, apart from her unique awakening, Sio does not stand above the others in power, despite being the protagonist. Rather, she simply possesses a power that would be useful to the organisation. Not a key, but simply another cog in the machine. At least for now.

Nobunagun-Episode-3-03
I hope you’re not camera shy

Due to the secrecy of her training, all of Sio’s personal communications we prohibited. Which did not sit well with the self proclaimed “modern high school girl”. In her search for a Wi-Fi connection, she stumbles upon an aircraft hangar and subsequently geeks out on the plethora of planes. It is here that she meets the military division stationed on the island and becomes fast friends with the multicultural troop. Apart from relieving her boredom, the troops also serve as a source of motivation for the hapless girl. This reveals that Sio, despite her own shortcomings, is willing to push herself further for others, the very aspect that that caused her to awaken her E-Gene powers. She also reacted very angrily when the human soldiers were referred to as nothing more than shields to guard the E-Gene Holders, further proving that despite her years without friends she is still inherently compassionate.

One of the main things to note in this episode would definitely have to be Capa himself. An E-Gene Holder, its is strongly implied that an accident took him out of commission and placed him in the wheelchair he now requires. Though his power is interesting and uniquely helpful in training regimes, it would be interesting to see him in full combat, which may just occur next episode. That being said, some of his training methods are a little…unorthodox, to say the least. Along with insulting her friends, Capa also threatened to “reveal” a lot more of Sio’s copy than needed. Bit of a slezeball move on his part. He also produced a bunch of swimsuit pictures featuring Sio’s copy which he distributed to the troops, who accepted them a little too eagerly. I know this kind of thing happens all the time in anime, but come on. She’s a high school girl and they’re a trained military division. The whole thing just came off as creepy and out of place in the series, which has so far been all action.

Nobunagun-Episode-3-04
The battle continues…

Regardless, with another major EIO threat looming in the winds, Sio and Capa must team up and fight to save the world. Looks like it’s time for Sio to put all that training to use. Hopefully she’s improved because the stakes just got a whole lot higher.

Blast of Tempest Collection 1 Review

Blast of Tempest Collection 1
Studio: Studio BONES
Publisher: Madman Entertainment
Format: DVD
Release Date: January 15th, 2014
Price: $59.95 – Available Here

Overview
What happens when you take Shakespeare’s Hamlet and The Tempest and thrown them together into a magical anime world? Well you get Blast of Tempest, one of the most unique anime experiences you’ll come across in quite some time. It follows the tragic tale of two friends and the death that unites them. Former friends, torn apart by death, brought together by revenge. It is unlike anything else in anime and Blast of Tempest proves to be a mixed bag because of it.

blast-of-tempest-collection-1-1

Story
Anyone who has ever come into contact with any of the works of Shakespeare would most likely have a good idea of what to expect from Blast of Tempest. As far as inspiration goes its quite clear that the original author held a great level of affection for Shakespeare and his body of work. The tragedy, revenge and dark take on romance are all staples of Shakespeare’s works and are all present here in Blast of Tempest.

From the get go, Blast of Tempest sets itself apart from just about any other anime with its Shakespearean allusions. The cast feels quite familiar if you’re familiar with Shakespeare’s works. Characters from Hamlet and The Tempest are alluded to heavily in our main cast of characters. While the tale itself is very much an original one, with a world of mages and the dark curse that is spreading across the land, there is Shakespearean undertones no doubt.

The story itself focuses around Mahiro and Yoshino, two friends both seeking retribution for the death of Aika, the sister of Mahiro and girlfriend of Yoshino. On top of that main story is several other simultaneous plot-lines revolving around mages and other parties. There is a lot going on here and at times it can be quite  a lot to take in.

blast-of-tempest-collection-1-4

It must be said, the story-telling here in Blast of Tempest is nothing short of convoluted. There is so much happening at any given time that it is sometimes difficult to follow every thing that is going on. This is both a good and bad thing for Blast of Tempest. The good thing is that there is a great level of depth to the plot with many different interwoven stories playing out at once. It is also a bad thing because the execution is somewhat haphazard coming off more convoluted than it does sharply written.

In spite of all that, Blast of Tempest proves to be a very intriguing anime series, with a lot of layers worthy of analysis. The material may only be inspired by aspects of Shakespearean work but it is just as thought-provoking and emotionally satisfying as the works that it alludes to.

This first collection covers episodes 1-12 and leaves viewers hanging in a pretty big way. Its a great way to end this first part of the series and it ends in a way that will leave you begging for more. Blast of Tempest is undoubtedly a highly engaging anime series and this first part is one hell of a way to get the ball rolling in the world of Tempest.

blast-of-tempest-collection-1-3

Visuals and Audio
In terms of visual aesthetics, BONES have done an incredible job adapting the Blast of Tempest manga. The animation is sublime like poetry in motion, with several instances of jaw-dropping sakuga animation work. The art style and character design is super slick and bursting with style. This is one good looking series to say the very least.

As for Blast of Tempest’s soundtrack, we have an great array of musical compositions that add to the action on screen with a deft hand and pin-point precision timing. To add to that the series features a great opening and ending theme. The opening theme in particular features English vocals, in what makes for an great rock tune to open out each episode.

This release features Japanese audio only unfortunately, leaving no English dub on this release. For some this won’t be of any consequence but for those looking for an English dub experience, the best thing to do would be to wait it out for an eventual English dubbed re-release, not unlike what Madman has done in the past for Blue Exorcist.

Extras
As far as special features, this is a fairly bare bones release unfortunately. Other than the first 12 episodes of the series, this release only comes packed with a clean opening and ending song and the usual trailers. Considering the fact that this release does not include an English dub, this is by far one of the most bare releases Madman has done in quite some time. It is a little disappointing, but the overall quality of the series is enough to warrant a purchase. Sadly the best advice I could give to those wanting a definitive release of the series would be the to wait for a future English dubbed release because if Blue Exorcist is anything to go by, that future release will come with more content than this subtitled only edition.

blast-of-tempest-collection-1-2

Overall
Hamlet and The Tempest are known as some of the greatest works of literature in human history. They have stood the test of time and it is no wonder that these works serve to be such an influence for Blast of Tempest, a tale of retribution in a cruel world. I can safely say that Blast of Tempest is one hell of anime experience, unlike just about anything we have seen in anime before. The Shakepearean allusions make for an interesting mix of an anime.

While Blast of Tempest can lean towards convolution at times, there is some really interesting concepts at play here and the interwoven plot-lines are layered and brimming with intrigue. Blast of Tempest is one of the freshest anime series in years and well worth the watch for that alone. The plot is a lot to take in at times and is ultimately a mixed bag but if you’re into something complex and highly detailed, Blast of Tempest might just be the blast of anime that you need.

The Slumber Party Massacre Due Out in March from Scream Factory

slumber-party-massacre-art-01

A long time ago, I was graced with a rental from Blockbuster. You see, back then I was watching every horror movie VHS I could get my hands on, and when The Slumber Party Massacre made its way in my VCR, I fell in love with one of the campiest, yet enjoyable slasher films from the 80’s. Thanks to Scream Factory, The Slumber Party Massacre will be seeing a revival on Blu-Ray with some fantastic special features in tow – set to release on March 18th.

Here are all of the drilling details:

This March 2014, loyal fans and horror enthusiasts are invited to join SCREAM FACTORY™ for the ultimate sleepover when Amy Holden Jones’ THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE, starring Michele Michaels (Death Wish 4: The Crackdown), Robin Stille (Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama), Michael Villela (Wild Orchid) and Andree Honore (Strange Reality), debuts on Blu-ray™ for the first time on March 18, 2014. This highly collectible Blu-ray edition features new high definition transfer and killer bonus content. A must-have for all slasher fans and movie collectors, this definitive Blu-ray release of THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE is priced to own at $24.97 SRP.

THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE (1982) helped define the slasher film ethos of the 1980s. Put together by first-time director Amy Holden from a script, titled “Don’t Open the Door,” by celebrated author Rita Mae Brown (Rubyfruit Jungle), the film was an immediate hit for Roger Corman’s New World Pictures, eventually spawning two sequels and became a staple in mom-and-pop corner video stores of the 1980s.

When Trish (Michele Michaels) decides to invite her high school girls’ basketball teammates over for a slumber party, she has no idea the night is going to end with an unexpected guest – an escaped mental patient and his portable power drill – crashing the party in the cult classic, The Slumber Party Massacre.

slumber-party-massacre-01

You can pre-order The Slumber Party Massacre here from Shout! Factory‘s official website, or snag it off Amazon by following this link. If you consider yourself a horror movie fan and have yet to witness one of the overlooked greats of the genre, you owe it to yourself to give this release a thorough viewing. It may not be the scariest, but much like other gems from the decade such as Psycho II and Prom Night II: Hello Mary Lou, it certainly made an impact in its own unique way.

“IRL Shooter” Comes To Sydney In August

IRL-Shooter-Patient-0-Sydney-01

IRL Shooter” the creators of “Patient 0”, a real-life first person shooter that uses unique and advanced laser-based weapons and environments to bring the action of a zombie video game into reality, are incredibly excited to announce that they well be bringing the action and horror of “Patient 0” to us living here in Sydney in August of this year! Last year “IRL Shooter” brought the fright to Melbourne with their real-life videogame experience but now, well not it’s Sydney’s turn to prove what we can do in a zombie apocalypse. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, let me lay it down for you: “Patient 0” is a large-scale interactive game that takes place in a 7000 square metre warehouse that has been made up to look like a laboratory that has been overrun by zombies. You, 5 friends and 200 trained actors will take part in this experience of a lifetime.

IRL-Shooter-Patient-0-Sydney-02

You’re a group of trained soldiers (you and your friends) who have been deployed into a danger zone filled with hundreds of flesh-hungry zombies (the 200 actors), your mission is to wipe out as many as possible while trying to find an antidote and ultimately attempting to stay alive. With things like infra-red weaponry and environments as well as pain belts that give you a bit of a shock when bitten, this is as close as you’re going to get to LIVING a game like “Resident Evil”. The tickets went on sale in December and unfortunately a majority of them have already been sold but, if you’re quick enough, you can get your hands on some sweet tickets now as well as help pledge money to the project by heading to the official “IRL Shooter: Patient 0” page here.

We also have a video that has been released by “IRL Shooter” that explains more about the experience and shows you a little of what the environment actually is which is in the Featured Video Section below the article but don’t scroll down yet because, just after this paragraph we’ve also posted a nice little that gives you a behind-the-scenes look at Melbourne’s “Patient 0” from last year. Now go check them out below and don’t forget to head over to the site to pledge some money and grab some tickets.
