Overview
People enjoy video games. People enjoy movies. So what happens when the two come together? I’m not talking about an  adaptation, but rather a production. Well known director John Woo has decided to delve into the world of gaming and create share his own vision: Bloodstroke. There will be blood, guns, blades and more blood as a Security Agent must undergo a not-too-impossible mission that she chose to accept: protecting a scientist. Sure there’s easier ways to get a paycheck, but if I’m sure if you make yourself a hard target you’ll be able to avoid a bullet in the head.

Everyone has an origin story…some are just bloodier than others

Story
Step into the shoes of Mai Lee, codenamed Lotus, an Elite Private Security Agent for the Phalanx company. Taking on her most recent assignment, which just so happens to be her first assignment, Lotus has been entrusted with the protection of one Dr Koorse. Making their way through the streets of Hong Kong and Beijing, Lotus and the dear Doctor are met with resistance at every possible turn. As the tide of opposition continues to wash the streets in blood, Lotus works to discover the identity and motive of Koorse’s attackers. All whilst keeping him alive.

Gameplay
Bloodstroke, in a way, follows the gameplay model of an on rails shooter. From an isometric viewpoint, you take control of Lotus and persistently make your way through the violent streets. Seriously, you can’t stop moving. Even removing your hand from the joystick merely reduces her to a slight jog. Tagging along behind is Dr Koorse who, without weapons of his own, continues forward on a predetermined path. This essentially divides the traditional game elements between the two characters. Lotus has access to the weapons needed to defeat the numerous foes, whilst Koorse possesses the health bar, without which you fail the level. So feel free to rush head first into battle because, for all intents and purposes, Lotus is immortal. Utilising your firearms and melee weapons, draw enemy attention and soak up damage to keep the dear old Doctor alive until he reaches the end of the stage, marked by a large X. Strategy comes into play when enemies begin to approach from numerous angles at once, forcing you to think about your style. Though blazing ahead will allow you to slaughter foes before they can even fire at Koorse, it also leaves him open to attacks from other angles. However, staying to close will cause every enemy to fire at your location, riddling Koorse with bullets. Which isn’t good. Should you ever be overwhelmed, special explosive weapons are unlocked by completing levels. Though limited in number, they may be just what you need to survive.

Weapons Store: For when you just aren’t killing fast enough

Occasionally, the gameplay mode will switch from on rails to a classic wave format. In these levels, Koorse remains still in the middle of the map whilst enemies approach from various directions. Once again, the trick is to know when to stay by his side and when to take the fight to the enemy. This format is also used in special arena levels, which exist for the purpose of netting some quick cash should you manage to complete bonus objectives and survive the onslaught. Enemies will naturally follow the evil progression trend and become stronger as the waves pass, making each moment more deadly than the last.

Where would a game be without upgrades? Being the Elite Private Security Agent she is, Lotus has access to a cadre of deadly and dangerous weapons. Each may be upgraded using your hard earned blood money, boosting elements such as damage, reload speed and reach. You may also decide to spend a lot extra and change weapons entirely. Though the default loadout is dual handguns and daggers, the game also includes shotguns, assault rifles, swords and chakrams (which just look cool). If you decide against spending a large chunk of cash on said weapons, they are eventually unlocked through completing levels. So it’s basically a question of time vs money. What would you rather spend?

Are you sure?

Visuals
The visuals are definitely one of the key elements that define Bloodstroke. The entire game is presented in black and white, lending a starkness to the environments that would not be possible were colour to be used. On top of that, the monochromatic background serves to powerfully contrast the colour red, whenever it is used. Combined with the sheer amount, the colouration of enemy blood provides an immediate and noticeable impact to the violence of Lotus. You’ll know who you’ve already killed, that’s for sure. Lotus’ bright red longcoat also serves as a beacon, allowing you to not only identify her at a glance, but also immediately connect her to the presence of blood. Which she usually creates. Because she’s a badass.

The game also features elements of traditional styles. Each cutscene is presented as a comic panel, providing visually still explanations of events complete with dialogue boxes. These visuals are also presented as if drawn with ink, strokes of shifting size, splotches covering images, haphazard colouration. Each of these elements serve to further stylise the game and add a visual concept that stands out.

Things are about to get a lot more colourful…

Audio
The main element to note regarding the soundtrack is the inclusion of a band called Far East Movement. Their presence adds a certain modernity to the audio that blends well with the more traditional Chinese sounds that are also present. A strong, almost urban feel, exudes from the cello that serves as an anchor for the beat (in the song that overlays the map). Combined with Chinese flutes and strings, the music serves to represent modern China. Born from tradition, now existing in cityscapes.

Sound also plays a very important role in combat. As each weapon has it’s own unique sound, listening past the backtrack will allow you to ascertain the current threat level. Hearing a gratuitous amount of shots being fired? Probably a good idea to check on Koorse. Enemies will occasionally be concealed by the environment (i.e. trees) so sound is sometimes the difference between victory and loss. Plus it’s really cool to hear your bladed weapons slicing through the air…and enemies.

It’s quiet…everything must be safe then

Overall
Bloodstoke is a game that both looks cool and is fun to play. The levels, whilst fairly simple and relatively short, are in no way an unfulfilling experience. When you hear about a game that is essentially one long escort mission, expectations naturally drop. Those things are difficult, and tedious more often than not. However, being that Lotus is invincible, a great deal of the pressure is taken off. This allows you to devote your attention entirely to keeping Koorse alive. Additionally, the whole “on rails” style actually makes the game easier than it would originally appear. Though the concept of an escortee who constantly runs into danger sounds horrible, compared to the AI that NPCs generally have, it’s actually not too bad. At the very least, you know where Koorse will go, meaning you just need to get there first and kill everyone else. Helpful. All in all, Bloodstroke looks good, plays well and sounds cool. What more could you want from a game?

New ‘Ninja Turtle’ Movie Designs Leaked

ninja-turtles-poster-04

Even though the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles received a recent reboot within the film industry with the 2007 film TMNT, a new movie is in production by Paramount Pictures simply titled ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’. This new film is bringing an entirely different look to the series and a poster leaked today finally gives us a good look at what the new designs are like and as you can see for yourself in the picture above, it’s definitely different. The photo of the poster is said to have been taken at a recent London toy fair and still features the tentative title of the film when it was known simply as Ninja Turtles.

An interesting fact about this movie is that actors are acting out many of the scenes with full motion capture suits on and life-sized turtle shells on their back. The new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is due to release on August 8th, 2014. Do you like the more ‘alien’ design these turtles are taking ? Let us know your opinion in the comment below.

Curve Mega Bundle out now for PlayStation 3/Vita

Curve-Mega-Bundle-Banner-01

Curve Studios have announced a great bundle featuring four of their most critically praised titles of 2013. The Curve Mega Bundle includes Proteus, Stealth Inc, Thomas Was Alone and Lone Survivor: Director’s Cut, and is available now on the PSN store. Each game is a Cross-Buy release, which means you’re able to play them on both the PlayStation 3 and the PS Vita with a single purchase, and some are also Cross-Save enabled.

The bundle will have the following discounted price for the first two weeks:

  • AU: $21.95/$17.56 PS Plus (Buy Here)
  • US: $14.99/$13.49 PS Plus
  • EU: €14.99/€12.99 PS Plus
  • UK: £11.99/£9.99 PS Plus

As usual, Australia gets the short end of the stick when it comes to pricing. The bundle is otherwise approximately 70% off compared to purchasing the games individually, and is cheaper than buying Proteus on its own. After the initial fortnight, the bundle will drop to about a 30% saving all up. Curve Studios PR Manager, Rob Clarke, said;

This bundle has everything from exploring a peaceful, dreamlike world to getting your head exploded by lasers. It represents a nice little slice of the ‘Indie Pie’ for those who have yet to stuff their face full of its delicious goodness.

They’re all quality indie releases, and we highly recommend checking out the bundle.

Tome of Holding: Paper Sorcerer Released Online

Paper-sorcerer-screenshot-01

Paper Sorcerer, developed by indie developer Ultra Runaway Games and crowdfunded through Kickstarter, has finally been released online for PC, Mac, and Linux. A version for iOS and Andriod will also soon be available.

Paper Sorcerer is a single-player turn-based RPG with a focus on strategy, party-building and management, and puzzles of an environmental nature (like an adventure game). You play as a sorcerer trapped in a mystical prison inside of a book who is attempting to escape. Players make use of a variety skills and spells in a battle system that attempts to emphasize strategy over grinding.  It appears to have some parallels to another game, Legend of Grimrock (the announcement of a sequel to which, we covered here), in terms of gameplay with players exploring an isometric 3D world.

Paper-sorcerer-screenshot-02

Party building is also a possibility as you assemble monsters, dark beings, and other villains to assist you in your escape. They’ll apparently be able to help you solve puzzles to uncover secret paths and find extra loot (the BEST kind of loot!).

The game also has an interesting style which makes use of hand-drawn artwork. Said style is somewhat reminiscent of the artwork on the covers of old-school pen and paper role-playing modules.

You can see a short trailer below and a demo is available here. If you deem it worthy of your patronage, you can buy the game on Steam here.

GhostControl Inc. Now Available for PC, Mac, and Linux

After being announced a few months into 2013, it looks like GhostControl Inc. is finally ready for players to jump into the turn based strategy ghost hunting game. Coming from Application Systems and Bumblebee Games, players can now fully prepare for with the demo and “Guide to ghost hunting in the 21st Century” manual which they have just released in preparation.

With 20 hours of gameplay, 18 different ghost types, and tons of unique dialogue and phone messages filled with references and call outs, players can expect plenty to amuse themselves in the strategy game. Players can expect to jump into the game for themselves right now from digital retailers like Windows Store, Desura, Gamers Gate, Indiegamestand, macgamestore, as well as currently being on Steam Greenlight. It will also be hitting the Mac App Store on January 30th.

Players wanting to check out the demo and/or manual for themselves can check out the GhostControl Inc. Website before they buy the game digitally for £9.99 ($13.90 / €12.99), but a box version is also planned for retail for £9.99.

CD Projekt RED Celebrates New Forum with Witcher 3 Screenshots

After announcing that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will in fact be making its way to Australia and New Zealand thanks to publisher Namco Bandai, CD Projekt RED is happy to announce even more good news for fans of the series. It seems that the forums for the game have gone through a complete redesign to better improve the experience .

Just what can fans expect to find on the new forum? In addition to linking accounts to their other game forums, i.e. CyberPunk and REDkit, players will be able to easily navigate from room to room and its own achievement system. So now players should have a much better time as they discuss CD Projekt RED‘s upcoming projects.

To add even more to the release of the new forum, CD Projekt RED has also released 3 new screenshots to show of the diversity of the world of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Players can see the screenshots above and below, as well as seeing the full sized images by clicking on the images themselves.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is currently set to release for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC sometime in 2014. Those wanting to take part in the discussion of their games can check out the brand new forum from the CD Projekt RED Website.

Are You Ready to be Born of the Gods?

born-of-the-gods-screenshot-02

Magic: The Gathering Players, it is time to get excited! This weekend marks the time where we shall all emerge from the Nyx and be the ones who are Born of the Gods. We have been playing with Theros cards since September and now it is time to move forwards. Born of the Gods, the latest set in the Greek Mythology-inspired Theros block is almost here, and this weekend marks the set’s prerelease event.

The prerelease gives players an opportunity to play with some of the new cards coming out in the set (and come up with some new strategies for the game), as well as to win some cool prizes (usually in the form of more cards). As with all prerelease events, it will be a Sealed Deck Tournament which means that you will be given six booster packs when you register and you will make and play with you 40 card deck from those cards.

born-of-the-gods-screenshot-01

Much like the Theros prerelease from September, players will choose their destiny in the form of five prerelease packs, each based on the colours of Magic. The five packs are: Destined to Lead (White), Outwit (Blue), Dominate (Black), Conquer (Red) or Thrive (Green).

Included in these packs will be:

  • 3 Theros booster packs
  • 2 Born of the Gods booster packs
  • 1 Seeded Born of the Gods booster pack (featuring mostly cards that match your chosen colour)
  • 1 Promotional card (again, matching your chosen colour)
  • 1 Hero Card
  • 1 Spindown Life Counter d20
  • 1 Activity Sheet

A Look at the Hero’s Packs for the Prerelease

The prerelease for Born of the Gods is also the next step along the Hero’s Path that was introduced for the Theros Block, so you can continue your journey to greatness, or begin anew. You don’t need to have played any of the previous steps in the Hero’s Path in order to join in, so don’t feel disparaged.

The prerelease will be running this weekend from the 1-2nd February, with many Local Gaming Stores running multiple events (so you can play through more than one colour and try out a bunch of different cards). Also remember that any card you open or win at the event is yours to keep, a full week before the set launches. So start tapping those lands, and remember that for all the Magic: The Gathering news as it becomes available, be sure to stay tuned to Capsule Computers.
