Studio: White Fox

Release Date: February 18th, 2014
Format: DVD/Blu-Ray Combo

Overview
While the first season of Jormungand was a fairly good series, it did have a few hiccups in that with so many characters not all of them received as much back story as the others and a lack of an overall story or progression throughout the series. Does Jormungand have what it takes to finish the rounds of characters and show what the anime is really about, or will it end up just a meandering narrative bent on showing viewers the world of an arms dealer and her bodyguards?

Story
The first season of Jormungand actually did end up leaving off on a pretty big twist and setting up for the next character’s back story, but luckily the beginning of the season is easily able to reiterate the situation from last time and get immediately back into the swing of the series. With Koko Hekmatyar having made so many enemies over the years, it stands to reason that she would have crossed paths with the CIA at some point and it seems that because of this Koko has had a spy in her unit for quite a while.

This is really the beginning of where the plot of the series is kicked into gear, with the first season simply setting up the lives of the majority of these characters and how they came to work for Koko. Exploring the back story of the undercover spy at this time introducing not only more important side characters, but starts to hint at what Koko’s goals truly are and how she might possibly achieve them. While the first season had more one off episodes and two episode arcs, the second season as a whole works much more as a full progressing story, and the remaining character’s back stories actually tying more directly to the development of the plot like nearer the end of season one.

What makes the second season even better is that it isn’t just the present characters that get explored, in one case it actually delves more into the past and gives a better idea of what the team was like before the boy soldier Jonah and many of the others joined the team. This adds so much more depth that certainly was never expected as when Jonah initially arrives the team acts much more like a family than a team of guards just working a job, showing just how much has changed over the years of Koko’s dealings.

Ultimately, when it finally comes time focus entirely on the plot of what Koko has planned, the series does an excellent job slowly building up to the execution of the plan. Though surprisingly, the main conflict in the series doesn’t come from Koko having to try and take on her enemies and achieve her goals, but a more personal conflict that has been building between Koko and Jonah, with his vast dislike of arms dealers and the like. Which makes for a far better conclusion as the internal conflict of the group seems to weigh much more emotionally on the group, then the external as Koko’s team is just too great at what they do.

Visuals
Coming so quickly on the heels of the last season the vast majority of visuals are on the same level, but as the plot gains speed the anime does start going in a much darker direction and facing off against new enemies. With these additions though, Jormungand is still easily able to keep up the quality and seems to do a lot more with the action scenes this time around. While the first season had great action, the second is still able to improve on this with the scenes being more extended than before, as they fight more groups of enemies instead of just two or three.

Audio
Again, as these seasons occurred back to back the quality is still much the same with the same actors still doing a very good job in the roles, there were several new characters though and voices that came with them. Adding in these new characters though they have still preformed well, especially with such a wide major cast. As this is also the final season to conclude the story of Jormungand, the return of some of the minor characters to see where they’ve been and where they are now does adds to the experience as well, especially with the returning voices.

The music is also able to keep up the quality as Koko’s team continues to travel to different locations and get into fights, but there is also a new opening and ending theme for Perfect Order. The opening theme this time was “UNDER/SHAFT” by Maon Kurosaki, which fits perfectly with the character of Koko, even more so this time as it is literally the codename for the CIA mission centered on her. The ending theme, “Laterality” by yanaginagi, in contrast is more about Koko from the perspective of Jonah and the conflict arising between their opposing views. Like the first season, there is an additional ending theme, “Shinjitsu no Hane” by yanaginagi, that acts as a sort of farewell to another character though this time is has a lot more meaning as they were around much longer than the assassins in the first season.

Extras
The special features for is very much in line with regular FUNimation releases and with the first season. This time fans can hear commentary on Episode 15 and Episode 24 as the American cast talks about their characters and working on the show. Likewise, there are opening theme and both ending themes available to view without the credits text and the trailers for the U.S. release of Jormungand Season 2: Perfect Order and other releases. There is an additional special feature, with the American director and two leads talking and exploring the different members of Koko’s team that gives a nice insight into their background and how they fit into the team.

Overall
With a lot more focus on the plot and finishing off the final few character back stories, Jormungand Season 2: Perfect Order is the perfect compliment to the first season. With no problems matching the quality of either the visuals or the music and voice overs from before, Jormungand is able to bring the story of Jonah and Koko to a definitive close. Fans of character driven plot with a good splash of action should find a lot to like as it explores the past and present lives of Koko’s team as she nears her ultimate goals and combat fiercer and fiercer enemies trying to oppose her, though the first season is kind of a must to get to know the vast majority of the team.

The Raid 2 Review

The-Raid-2-Australian-Poster-01

The Raid 2
Studio: Merantau Films, XYZ Films
Publisher: Madman
Formats: Cinema
Release Date: March 28, 2014

Overview

The Raid 2 is Gareth Evans’ sequel to 2012’s The Raid: Redemption, the Welsh-born director’s highly acclaimed Indonesian action bloodbath. Expanding the scope from a drug lord’s apartment block, to the corrupt streets of Jakarta, The Raid 2 has already received much praise, having its worldwide premiere at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival in January. The finished product is a reworking of an old idea from Evans and executive producer Rangga Maya Barack-Evans, one that was planned by the duo for production in between Merantau (2009) and The Raid: Redemption, but was too ambitious and costly at the time. Modifying the script to fit within the “Raid franchise”, and with the profits and success The Raid: Redemption had, the team was finally able to realise their complicated vision. While scheduled for wide release on March 28, we were able to watch the Sundance version of the film – with some incomplete sound effects – at a recent screening courtesy of Madman and NIX Co. So, was our disturbingly strong blood-lust quenched? Read on to find out.

The-Raid-2-Still-07

Story

Nary a film bold enough to begin with a point-blank shotgun blast to the head; The Raid 2 doesn’t pull any punches. As the title card crashes to black, we are reintroduced to Rama (Iko Uwais) not long after the events of The Raid: Redemption. Thinking he was done, much like a Mafia tale, they pull him right back in. A policeman named Bunawar (Cok Simbara) recruits Rama for his undercover team, focused on bringing down a controlling crime syndicate run by a man named Bangun (Tio Pakusadewo) – the basic equivalent of a Don of the most powerful family in Jakarta. Rama declines, but is swayed after discovering his brother has been murdered at the hands of Bejo (Alex Abbad), another gang leader. He accepts, but not without a further price, for his specific task will require that he be imprisoned in order to befriend Bangun’s jailed son Uco (Arifin Putra) and spend that period away from his wife and young son Angga. Beating up a benefactor of Bejo, and son of a politician, Rama assumes the identity of Yuda and enters prison, immediately making himself known by dismantling 15 men in a bathroom brawl.

The-Raid-2-Still-08

Confronted by an arrogant Uco in the cafeteria, Rama fails to be intimidated. Later, in a massive prison yard fight, Rama saves Uco’s life. As repayment, Bangun gets him a decreased sentence and eventually welcomes him into the “family”, so to speak. From this point, Rama must play along, gathering intel on the Indonesian-Japanese relations and whether or not Bangun has a crooked cop in Reza in his pocket. Shadowing Uco, he quickly learns of the young man’s urge to take over his father’s empire, which is the foundation for most major conflict as the film progresses. There are twists and turns in the story that are both surprising and typical of the genre. Fans of the original may initially be confused by the reappearance of Yahan Ruhian – who played Mad Dog in the first movie and died at its conclusion – as he returns to inhabit a completely different person in Bangun’s family friend Prakoso. The film heavily reminds of The Godfather in theme and certain storyline elements, which is no surprise considering Evans’ ‘treated the classic as his bible’ during development. Personally, it also screams of Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill, mostly due to the cinematography, but also two characters in particular – Hammer Girl and Baseball Bat Man. That’s exactly how they are referred to. The movie is definitely not for the squeamish, as its graphic depictions of blunt force trauma can understandably be quite disturbing to some. But for those who loved the prior instalment, you’ll feel right at home… your sick, blood-soaked home.

The-Raid-2-Still-10

Visuals & Audio

The Raid 2 is both visually similar to, and strikingly more colourful than The Raid: Redemption. The photography and cinematography crew utilised a deeper range of colours, some of which would represent a particular character. Tonally, the beginning act is very familiar, but as Rama delves deeper into the criminal organization run by Bangun, the movie becomes vividly hued. A major difference between the two films is that The Raid 2 offers a much wider-screen experience, being shot in cinemascope. It looks clean and crisp, with its enlarged budget evident by virtue of the visual quality. This being Evans’ first opportunity to shoot a car-chase sequence, there was a lot to learn in regards to directing and logistics. I’m happy to say that Evans proves he is more than adept at shooting such difficult scenes, having multiple angles even within the confined space of a car’s interior that frame the extremely close-quarters fight that ensues therein. He particularly makes great use of the overhead shot in these instances. The high-speed nature of these scenes – where highways had to be blocked off for production and everything was done legitimately, without CGI – makes what Evans was able to capture all the more impressive.

The-Raid-2-Still-09

In general, Evans has always displayed an uncanny directorial instinct, augmenting the action with brilliant camera choices that often results in a somehow more visceral and heightened response from the audience. Case in point for this film is a moment where Rama throws a criminal through a window into the room next door. Evans chooses to shoot the fall – which is short being on floor level, mind you – upside down, making the impact seem significantly greater to the eye. In another scene, Topan (porn den operator) is running toward camera before suddenly jumping through a glass window adjacent to him, with Evans following, panning right and tilting the camera as the felon goes from a vertical footing to a hard, horizontal landing. I sincerely do not believe there is a better action director out there today. Audio-wise, the post-production foley and final mixing – as mentioned – were not final, but have since been completed by Skywalker Sound. Aria Prayogi and Fajar Yuskemal, who created the score for the domestic cut of The Raid: Redemption, and Joe Trapanese, who worked with Mike Shinoda on the international score, all returned to create a sound that connected the two entries, and a rhythm that mimicked the action on-screen. In that sense, the music of The Raid 2 fits like a glove.

The-Raid-2-Still-02

Overall

The Raid 2‘s Jakarta-wide backdrop really allowed Evans to explore the potential for more varied and dynamic set-pieces, as opposed to the limiting setting of The Raid: Redemption‘s dinghy apartment building. He, alongside stars Uwais and Ruhian – also acting as fight choreographers for the shoot, and both of whom laid out the action choreography for the original 2010 script – managed to develop some extremely creative moments in combat which don’t let up on the brutality, the bar for which the previous film set so high. And with forty-seven extra minutes of runtime to play with (compared to its predecessor), Evans decided to tell a much more complex and large-scale story, with sub-plots and real character development. That being said, it is safe to assume that those who are interested in the series are so because of the extreme violence and expertly crafted action sequences, and while The Raid 2 may not be as concentrated an assault as many might have expected, it is a better film on the whole than the first. If not for Uwais’ laughably over-the-top acting, and a couple continuity errors, I would call The Raid 2 the perfect action movie.

Tales from the Borderlands details emerge from SXSW

tales-from-the-borderlands-telltale

As you may have heard, Telltale Games and Gearbox were planning on revealing additional details for Tales from the Borderlands during the SXSW Gaming Expo this past weekend and since the majority of their fans could not attend such an event, Telltale recorded nearly the entire forty seven minute panel.

The full video can be found below but some of the highlights involve details about the two characters in the game, Rhys and Fiona, both of which are remembering the story through flashbacks which means that each character might recall the events differently. The choice mechanic will also return though it appears they are trying to keep some sense of action in the game even though Telltale’s approach towards development is generally less action oriented. We still have yet to hear a solid release date though one can expect an announcement of such sometime soon.
