Nagi no Asukara Episode 26 – The Color Of The Sea. The Color Of The Land. The Color Of The Wind. The Color Of The Heart. The Color Of You.
After almost half a year Nagi no Asukara has finally come to an end and it’s been an emotional ride. It’s been beautiful since the start but the show has gone from a curious tale of childhood friends from under the sea to a series that did its best to define love, human feelings and our struggle to carve our own future.
Following on from the last episode, the Sea God has once again awoken after being summoned by the Boatdrift Ceremony. Although Manaka was in danger of being taken again, it was Miuna instead who became trapped at the bottom of the sea where Manaka once lay. It seems the huge focus on Miuna during the second half of the anime wasn’t in vain, as it turns out her character is at the forefront of the final episode.
Manaka’s narration helpfully explains the full story of the Sea God and the Maiden and we actually get flashbacks of the two for the first time. She is brought to the surface and is left with Chisaki and Kaname.
As Hikari tries in vain to break through to Miuna when he finally, somehow, realises the feelings that she harboured for him all this time. He wanted Manaka to fall in love with him when the one closest to him, Miuna, held the strongest feelings for him. In a brief spate of madness Hikari screams for the Sea God to take his ability to love in return for Miuna’s freedom. Miuna’s consciousness realises the truth of the Sea God’s folly and in turn the spirit fire surges forth uncontrollably, lighting up the once-dead Shioshishio.
While everything burns in the spirit of the Sea God, Hikari finally manages to tear through the shield covering Miuna and begins to swim away with her. At this point we’re told the truth of the Maiden. Uroko laughs as he himself realises that the Maiden loved the Sea God, not her former lover, and so had her ability to love taken away by mistake.
Hikari’s father is then seen casually strolling his way towards them and he explains that he heard what Hikari told him about how much Miuna had grown and about Akira as well. With the people of Shioshishio waking up the sea begins to break free of the ice and the waves move once again.
A new sunny day rises and the world is slowly returning to normal only now everyone’s feelings are shining brilliantly. Hikari, Kaname, Miuna and Sayu still need to finish school while Tsumugu is about to head off to live in the city for a short while, with Chisaki seeing him off. In the end, Hikari and Manaka can finally share their love while Miuna has to move on, sadly. It’s OK, she was too good for Hikari anyway.
It wasn’t until the very end until I realised what the whole show was all about. We can only theorise about the bigger picture from this little blue orb called Earth. Despite the challenges thrown our way for whatever reason and without clear answers for many of our questions, humanity still finds a way to do whatever the hell it wants. In the end, we can carve our own path and express our emotions. The complicated love triangle and the way the show made us think Manaka liked Tsumugu, but then revealing that she liked Hikari instead, proves that fate can be changed.
Nagi no Asukara was a cold yet fuzzy anime. It was a bit overly wordy and nothing happened for a number of episodes, but the romance was probably some of the best I’ve seen in a while. The chemistry between the friends was endearing. Maybe I’m just relieved we got something more than a vacuous imouto show (bless their hearts). Until next time!
Earlier we learned that NIS America had acquired the second season of Love Live! which many anime fans were expecting, but today the company has announced a license acquisition that has probably caught many of their fans off guard, just like when they licensed the first season of Love Live!.
Today NIS America has announced that they have acquired Kanojo ga Flag o Oraretara and will be releasing it under the name If Her Flag Breaks sometime in the future, but for now the series is being streamed on Crunchyroll on Wednesdays.
I say this is a surprising pick up by NIS America because this isn’t a series they usually go for, however it is certainly a pleasant surprise and it will be interesting to see where things will go from here. Anyways, for those unfamiliar with the series from its light novel origin or manga adaptation, the series follows Sota Hatate who has the ability to see flags above people’s heads.
These flags mark critical moments in time where people can become friends, fall in love, win an event, or even die and since he can see these flags, he has the power to change their outcome. However even with his abilities he soon finds himself surrounded by numerous smitten girls but things are more desperate than they first appear.
You might have heard of the game Citizens of Earth before and there is good reason for that. The developers for the game, Eden Industries, attempted to fund development of Citizens of Earth through Kickstarter but unfortunately they did not reach their goal. However it looks like that dark cloud had a silver lining because today Atlus USA has announced that they will be publishing the game for release sometime later this year for the Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and PC.
In Citizens of Earth players will take on the role of Vice President of the World and after the world is plunged into chaos, you must do everything you can to put a stop to this chaos. Players will be able to recruit forty different crazy citizens to help them fight against all kinds of enemies in a very Earthbound feeling battle system.
Yesterday we learned that EA Sports UFC will be hitting the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on June 17th in North America and that anyone who pre-orders the game will be able to add Bruce Lee to their roster. Well today we have learned that a demo for the game is planned for release.
On EA‘s official UFC twitter account they replied to a fan saying that yes a demo is on the way but at the moment they have not said when the demo would be released nor what fighters will be available in the demo, but we can expect to see some more details soon.
After details for Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory II were revealed now we have additional details for Hyperdimension Neptunia U and despite there being a U in the name, Wii U owners shouldn’t be excited. Today, along with a teaser sitefor the game being launched, Dengeki Magazine scans have revealed new details about the game and the fact that it is being released for the PlayStation Vita and is being developed by Senran Kagura deveopers Tamsoft.
With these scans we know that the game is set to be released in Japan on August 28th and it looks like it will play similar to a Warriors style game with characters such as Noire, Blanc, and Vert being playable characters that can transform into their goddess forms.
As we already know, Compile Heart is working on a new main entry in the Hyperdimension Neptunia franchise and it happens to be called Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory II. However at the time of the game’s announcement we knew very little about the title.
Well today thanks to a number of scans from Dengeki PlayStation and info from Hokanko we have not only been given a glimpse at how Neptune will look in the next game but also details about the game’s story and how this will not be an actual sequel to Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory which was released last year in North America by NIS America.
In this game there is an adult Neptune that cannot transform into a goddess and she is assisted by not only Uranus Uzume a red haired girl but a number of other girls that have also been revealed. The story will take place in three different dimensions, Zero Dimension Neptunia Z, Hyperdimension Neptunia G, and Heart Dimension Neptunia H.
Well here it is, the final episode for the first yuri anime of the year, this really has been an interesting show for me. When the anime first started I was interested and above all entertained; the first two episodes had some of the funniest moments in the entire series (yes it was the veranda jump and volleyball scenes) but the other episodes developed more dramatic issues which kept me interested. Although this one does have some elements of humour, I preferred the more serious notes and since the past few episodes were building up to Mitsukis’ confession, there was a bit of tension that was nicely resolved in the end.
12-A: Pudding and Mitsuki’s Determination.
The surprise party may have been ruined for Mitsuki, but that doesn’t mean Rina had to miss out on all the fun. Whilst walking back from school Rina begins asking Mitsuki why Sumi was texting from her house, when the doors opened both girls are welcomed with party poppers and all seven girls (Sumi included) shouting congratulations.
The first event for the day was the talked about bucket of green tea pudding… no really they actually filled a large bucket full of the stuff and added azuki beans into the mixture. Mitsuki takes the first spoonful and expresses her love for the pudding; Rina was a bit less enthusiastic, but tries to express her appreciation for their effort. The gifts given to both seniors included two handmade mustaches (courtesy of Sumi), a chandelier paid for by Kotone and Iizuka and Ikenos’ spot on impersonations of the two girls.
Unfortunately there was that pressing matter involving Haruka, Yuu and Mitsuki that needed to be addressed, luckily all three girls have a private conversation in the kitchen, although I wouldn’t be surprised if the others could hear them. Mitsuki and Yuu begin to have a sibling argument with Haruka smack bang in the middle; since she doesn’t believe Yuu is really in love with Haruka, Mitsuki confesses in front the two and even asks Haruka out on a date.
The brief argument between Yuu and Mitsuki was very enjoyable to watch; it felt like an accurate portrayal of the little things siblings tend to get angry about and it flowed nicely into the next scene where Yuu kisses Haruka to further disobey her older sister. Although I’m not a fan of Mitsukis’ obsession with Haruka, the second half does explain the real reason for the attraction and ends with both parties happy about the situation.
12-B: Sakura Trick.
After the graduation ceremony for the senior students finishes, Haruka and Mitsuki meet each other behind the tennis courts (it’s not what you’re thinking) so that Mitsuki can talk about what she said earlier on. When Yuu notices Haruka’s absence she decides to look for her, as it just so happens she spots her sister and her best friend talking alone and hides behind a tree and listen in on their conversation. Mitsuki asks Haruka out on a date and for some reason Haruka asks what a date actually is; apparently it’s holding hands, walking together, staying at each other’s houses and kissing. Mitsuki was right in saying that Haruka didn’t get the true concept of love however that didn’t mean her feelings for Yuu were anything but; it was because of how important Yuu was to her that Mitsuki developed an emotional attraction towards Haruka. With this knowledge and confirmation, Mitsuki is comfortable with Haruka being with Yuu and gives her a kiss on the forehead.
After Mitsuki leaves the tennis courts she discovers Yuu was there the whole time, Yuu then grabs Haruka and takes her to the unused room where they shared their first kiss. Haruka and Yuu hold each other and begin kissing, before each locking of lips they say their true feelings towards one another… “I love you.” The episode ends with all original six girls entering school as second year students; the sakura petals dance around Haruka and Yuu as they hold hands and enter a new year of school, adventures and yuri memories in the making. The sakura petals and fade to white was the finishing touch that made this one a pleasant ending.
Overall this was a great way to end the entire series; not only was the story plot good, but the still shots and music worked perfectly together to create an amazing finishing episode. The way they treated Mitsukis’ attraction towards Haruka wasn’t my favourite part of the series, however I did like the way they ended it.
I have said before that the humour was lacking in some parts of the anime and the focus should’ve been divided more amongst all six girls; but the dramatic moments were genuinely gripping, there were some great jokes and the other four girls made the most out of the little screen time they had. The fan service in the anime was noticeable, but only distracting in a couple of instances. Each character had their own uniqueness and their interactions with each other felt realistic and also charming (Shizuku X Kotone, yuri couple 2014). I have a feeling more yuri anime will be popping up throughout the rest of this year and Sakura Trick was a great one to get the ball rolling. Kiss, kiss, kiss, this show had me entranced.
Sakura Trick is animated by Studio Deen and is currently being streamed, by Crunchyroll. Don’t forget to check out our Anime Impressions page to see what shows the other Capsule Computers anime crew is watching this season.
When we reviewed Hoppetee a good while ago (check it out here), we enjoyed the game and thought it was quite a charmer. Birgit Stock are ready to expand the little grasshopper’s resume however, and have now released the once iOS exclusive runner to the Android, where it can be picked up for free (with optional in-game purchases).
Hoppetee has also received an update on the iOS (download here), adding more dresses, a new Chinese landscape and Chinese themed music, and new challenges and golden coins to collect. Yes, it is quite an update, and you can swoop up either version as of today!
Need a new shirt with Yoshi on it? How about riding a Yoshi? Well, you can do both if you have the coins. Nintendo have been updating their catalog at Club Nintendo as of late, and have added four digital titles as well as some Yoshi merchandise. Now, the Yoshi merch (which is a shirt and a cleaning cloth) have both been up for over a week now, but hey, I’m sure someone didn’t catch it yet. If you haven’t seen our review for Yoshi’s New Island, you can also do that here by the way.
As for the newly added games, Super Mario World has been added for 200 coins (Wii U), along with Mario Golf (N64 Version for the Wii Virtual Console) for 250, Trajectile on the 3DS for 200, and Art Academy: First Semester rounding things off at 200 as well. I do notice the prices are slow climbing for these digital releases, but hey – free is free and you should make haste on adding these titles to your collection today.
