Heavy Bullets is an exciting FPS dungeon crawler being published by Devolver Digital, the publishers behind Broforce. Developer Terri Vellmann created a wonderfully colorful yet dangerously deceptive dungeon crawler. In all of its glory, Heavy Bullets provides users with an intense gameplay experience as they battle their way through eight levels and two bosses in attempt to shutdown the security mainframe. With little creeps that try to chomp away at you at every turn and malfunctioning security bots that fire rounds at you constantly, Heavy Bullets will test your reaction times and courage. The little creepers will rush at you the minute they see you, so your reaction time will be the only thing that will save you. There is no real backstory to the game that they provide. Basically, your goal is to shut down the security mainframe and reset it.

At the beginning of the game, you will start off with nothing but your trusty revolver and six bullets. The funny thing about this is that you have to constantly pick up your bullets after you fire them off, which means that if you pop all your shots and don’t have any spare, you’ll be dead very soon. This mechanic is actually very interesting. It adds a new level of depth to the game, one where you have to consider why you’re about to shoot your gun and how frequently you do. If there’s multiple enemies in the vicinity, you can’t just go spend all of your bullets trying to take out one mob. Bullet management is really important in Heavy Bullets, and you really feel the importance of such a mechanic.

There are also items scattered around the separate levels, each providing a unique buff or activate skill that will help you in your journey to the eighth level. The items might range from homing bombs to repellent, but you have to decide what item is the most useful for any given situation, as you are only given one slot to hold the item. Items can be picked up as you uncover the nooks and crannies in each level.

Every level is unique and created to make it as tough as possible for you to survive. You will never meet the same level twice, and every round will be a completely different experience for players as they battle their way through the colorful plethora of plant life. The randomly-generated levels gives the title a completely different twist to it, and makes the game a little bit more difficult to traverse. There is some hope, however. Even though when you die, the effects are permanent, you can invest in your next gameplay experience by depositing the coins you earned into a bank that can be accessed from certain points on each level. You can also purchase life insurance and a last will to carry your items over to your next attempt. At least these measures will create an easier experience for a player to get back up to their most current level.

Heavy-Bullets-Screenshot-03

While the game is being presented as an early-access title, it is nearly fully developed, with the main additions and changes only being made to the minor things such as items and bug fixes. The game is pretty much completed, so I had a chance to get a good look at the true gameplay nature of it from start to end. Sadly, I was unable to make it all the way to the eighth level on my attempts, but I did gain a lot of insight into what was going wrong with my attempts. As stated before, spray-and-pray methods of shooting will yield you poor results, as you have very limited bullets, unless you move quickly and can pick up and reload your gun before the mobs catch you.

The sound effects and music are kind of annoying, and aren’t very refined, but it will be fixed as the final release comes out. The aesthetics of the game are amazing, however. I have to commend Terri Vellmann for creating an amazing title that has a lot of potential. The graphics are captivating and very easy to look at, while not being overly intimidating. This rogue-like FPS is unique in its approach, and is certainly a force to be reckoned with when comparing it to other rogue-like FPS’s. The entire atmosphere of the game creates an undeniable sense of panic and excitement as you try to reign in your fear from forgetting to reload your gun when you encounter a killer mob.

Heavy-Bullets-Screenshot-05

All in all, this early-access version is definitely worth looking at. If possible, purchasing the title will probably yield rogue-like FPS enthusiasts a few hours of fun that is unique to other titles. Heavy Bullets will be available on the PC, Mac, and Linux, and should be completed rather soon this year. Check out their Steam page from the link above, and make sure to follow this intriguing title into its final stages of release.

Transformers x Evangelion Optimus Prime Figure to Roll Out

Transformers-x-Evangelion-Crossover-Image-01
’til all are one

Takara Tomy has finally revealed the details regarding the mysterious Transformers x Evangelion project mentioned a while back. As with some other franchises Transformers has decided to work with in the past, this crossover will take the form of a brand new figure.

Specifically the release is known as a Mode Eva edition of the classic MP-10 Convoy figure. As previewed in the teaser image, this version of the Autbot leader is a green and purple redeco of the original release. Though the heroic champion of all sentient beings still carries the Autobot crest, fans may also notice that the NERV logo is emblazoned on his trailer. Though I’m sure it’s completely on the level *cough* Cybertronian Instrumentality Project *cough*

The figure is set to release in Japan in November, though pre-orders will open up on June 12th for 25,00 yen. Though not an actual anime release or anything, having an Eva-Transformer to add to your collection is still pretty cool. No word yet on whether or not more Transformers will join the fray however, though it’d certainly be awesome watching the Autbots and Decepticons powered by Adam and Lilith wouldn’t it?

Big Hero 6 trailer crash lands

big-hero-6-screenshot-1
The first look at the first Disney animated Marvel film has appeared. The film is titled Big Hero 6 and it looks to be quite a ripper for Marvel’s first outing since being bought by Disney.

Coming from the wonderful folk who put together recent animation entries Frozen and Wreck-It Ralph, Big Hero 6 is a superhero tale in line with the works of Marvel. The trailer which can be seen below features what appears to be some kind of boy genius turning his best friend who happens to be a white balloon creature into a superhero, to little success.

Be sure to check out the trailer and let us know what you think of Big Hero 6 in the comments section.

The face of sadness, rage, regret…

Episode 8: That Fake Vow

Just when you thought being a Selector was bad news, this week throws us two more possibilities that honestly aren’t any better. It would seem that win or lose, a person’s life is tremendously altered by their time as a LRIG wielder. Kind of explains the overall lack of explanation regarding the whole “Eternal Girl” thing. Anyway, with Akira rounding of last episode with a spot on rendition of a crazy person, it’s time to see what the former Aki-lucky girl wants. I wonder if it’s to be friends…

selector-infected-WIXOSS-Episode-8-02
Tama is blue…

It isn’t, it isn’t to be friends. The once and former Selector/model has decided to dive head first into the depths of insanity it would seem, and she’s jonesing to bring everyone down with her. Having lost her three battles, Akira now has three targets on which to seek revenge…of the stabbing kind. Of course she doesn’t actually get the chance to murder Ruko and Yuzuki, but it’s the thought that counts right? Anyway, Akira’s whole “former Selector” situation raises some questions, to me at least, namely: How the hell does she remember what a Selector is? Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t one of the penalties of loss forgetting everything about the Selector world? Hitoe forgot, so why does the psycho-cutey get a free pass? Also, all things considered, Akira’s penalty is no life ending. Career ending I suppose, especially considering how terrible her co-workers were, but she still has her mind intact…well, as intact as it was to begin with. Though I guess considering what we know about Akira, her reaction to the scar speaks volumes about her character. Combined with her desire to see her modelling competition fail, it’s pretty safe to say that Akira lacks the self confidence she once pretended to possess. This is the kind of stuff that happens when you don’t appreciate yourself people, you go crazy and try to stab everything that hurt you. Not a good way to live.

Being the sweetheart that she is, Ruko actually listened to Akira when she blamed her for causing her fall from grace. Sweet, but stupid. Regardless of how true it is, Akira chose to fight and accepted the consequences. She’s just being a poor sport…a poor, violent sport. Anyway, Ruko spends a majority of the episode mired in sadness, to the point that even Tama understands that battles aren’t always good. Think about that for a minute. The battle hungry card spirit designed to fight understands that combat might not be the answer. As touching a moment as this was, it’s real benefit came from the fact that it actually gave Tama some more depth. In all honesty the LRIGs are inherently flat characters, living to serve their Selector, but we have seen personalities shine through to a degree. Such as happiness, malice, deception…

The door to desire

Alright, here it is, the main plotline that made this episode that unholy fusion of sweet and creepy that we’ve come to expect from WIXOSS: Yuzuki/Kazuki. Yep, despite everything that has happened over the course of the series, our love struck Selector refuses to accept that her affections are straight up misplaced. Side Note: Is there something I’m missing here? Anime seems to adhere to the belief that any promise made or emotions felt around the age of 5 stay with a person throughout the entirety of their life. Seriously? I can’t remember what I ate for dinner a week ago and they’re gonna tell me that a highschool girl still has the exact same view on love that she had over 10 years ago. I mean it’s possible, but it seems entirely too common in the world of anime. Despite this fact, Yuzuki enters into what will be her final Selector battle, mere minutes away from having her dream realised…and maybe Kazuki’s. First of all, I still don’t like Kazuki’s friends. I don’t care how accurate they were, it’s still ridiculous to suspect a romantic relationship between him and Yuzuki because they eat lunch and walk home together. It’s just dumb. Same goes for the girl who professed her feelings to him, he turned you down and that sucks, but don’t go accusing the guy of acts he didn’t commit. Also “Prove it with a kiss”, the hell was that? An awkward and desperate move is what that was.

All things considered however, Kazuki might just have feelings for Yuzuki. The only thing is that they only started to surface after Yuzuki had won her battle, the effects of which are not clearly defined as of yet. Though Kazuki is noticeably more attracted to his sister (weirds me out writing that), there is no indication that they are no longer related. So I’m not exactly sure how her wish was granted. Though I suppose her wish was that they would be together, not that society would find it right…so there’s a distinct possibility that her victory simply caused Kazuki to feel the same way about her that she does about him. Which, along with raising a number of questions regarding morality, is still just weird. By the way, don’t you just love how the girl with the sweet, innocent wish for friendship had her entire life shattered and Yuzuki manages to get what she wants? Yay world.

selector-infected-WIXOSS-Episode-8-04
A far too familiar face…

So congratulations to Yuzuki I guess. Her dream came true and she can now “be with” Kazuki….hooray. However, despite her resounding victory, Yuzuki’s transcendence to Eternal Girl may have come with an unknown price. It would appear that a new LRIG has joined the fray, one who bears an uncanny resemblance to one recently victorious Selector. But that’s not all friends, it would appear that said card has found it’s was into the hands of one recently unsuccessful Selector. I’ll give you two guesses who that is. Hint: It’s not Akira and it’s Hitoe.
