Overview

Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer is a spin-off of Nintendo’s popular Animal Crossing series. It may have some flaws and may have limited gameplay options, but it still provides a fun gaming experience. Is it something that can be fun for everyone, though, or is it best suited to only the dedicated fans of the series?

Story

Tom Nook has hired a new employee for his burgeoning business Nook’s Homes. Nook’s Homes is the place to go for animals looking to move to New Town, a town that is in the early stages of development. You must build your reputation by remodelling the new residents’ houses. Within a short period of time, you are introduced to Isabelle, who is in charge of managing the contracts for the construction of various town facilities. She gives you the opportunity to choose the exterior design of the facilities and then design their interior. If you successfully design the first round of facilities you have access to, she will leave and come back a couple of days later with contracts that will allow you to continue designing all of the planned facilities until the town is complete.

Gameplay

After a short scene in which Tom Nook realises that he has somehow forgotten everything about you, you are given the opportunity to customise your avatar. You get to choose what eye shape, what colour iris, what hair style, what hair colour and what skin tone your avatar has. You can also choose your sex and your name. One of the flaws of this game is that after you have decided on the look of your avatar, you are unable to change it until you unlock the Styling Machine lesson in the Happy Home Handbook and pay the five Play Coins required to access it. Once Tom Nook has ‘remembered’ you, you are introduced to the Nook’s Homes team and placed under the care of Lottie. She takes you through a tutorial sequence in which you remodel the interior of her home. To begin with, you have the option to place a carpet and many types of items on the floor and on the wall. All of the items are grouped into categories that can be easily accessed using the touch screen. All you have to do to remodel the interior of a house or facility is simply select and place an item in the room by using the stylus and then move it to where you think it should go, rotating the item by tapping it with your stylus. It is simple, and although there is little else to do in the game, it can be fun working with the themed items your clients unlock for you. You can even choose where on the map you will build each of your clients’ houses.

Although you have to incorporate your clients’ favourite belongings into your design and model the house based on the specific theme your client requests, you are otherwise given the freedom to do whatever you want with their homes. Clients do not care whether everything is organised neatly or not. Making things even more helpful for players, clients also react positively, negatively or neutrally when you place or remove an object, making it almost impossible to fail. Another useful feature is that you can place objects halfway across two tiles. You can also fling yourself and your client across the room with your stylus, which is fun whether or not you actually need to do that while working on their house.

Once Isabelle shows up, you can build important facilities such as a school and a hospital. She only asks that you meet some basic requirements for the interior design of each facility. Unfortunately, there are many design features that cannot be unlocked by simply taking on requests from villagers. Once you have unlocked the Happy Home Handbook and completed the first lesson in it, you have to use Play Coins to pay for the rest of the lessons. Many features will therefore remain locked unless you either already have enough Play Coins or are willing to spend several days walking with your 3DS for up to 1,000 steps each day to get enough Play Coins. Some lessons cost half of a whole day’s worth of Play Coins, which is not particularly worth it or entirely necessary to complete the main requests and reach the conclusion of the plot.

The biggest flaw with this game is its product placement. On the second floor of Nook’s Homes is a computer that you can use to download special design requests from the internet. The special request that is currently available is one that advertises the 30th anniversary of the Mario franchise. Once you have made enough progress, Lottie’s uncle Lyle builds an Amiibo phone that allows players to use Amiibo cards to call villagers and see if they can remodel the house of the character on the scanned card. Players can also assign jobs to the characters scanned in from the cards. None of this adds any to the appeal of the game, and comes across as more of a money-making scheme than a cool bonus for long-time Nintendo fans.

Visuals

Some of the NPCs are so large that they clip through some objects, but this is the only graphical issue that has been found in the game so far. New Town has a quaint feel to it, and one of the best elements of this game is seeing the way the town evolves as you build more and more facilities. If there are only two minor drawbacks with the design feature, they are that not all of the items can be interacted with by you or your client and that you cannot design or even visit your avatar’s home. These drawbacks can be ignored, however, as there are many design options to keep players engaged. These include choosing the weather for the exterior of each house you build and installing a ceiling light inside of them, as well as many other options.

Audio

The background music is pleasant but not particularly memorable for the most part. You can listen to different background music while decorating the interior of a house if you place a set of speakers in the room. You can alternatively place a karaoke machine providing you accept and complete a random request for a karaoke parlour to be built. You can also choose to keep a house or facility devoid of any musical devices, meaning that it will be relatively silent if you visit it afterwards, except perhaps for one or more NPCs talking. If you spend two Play Coins to complete the Sound Scenery lesson, you will gain the ability to listen to atmospheric sounds while decorating your house, such as the sound of wind blowing. It is an easily forgettable feature, but it does add a bit of variety to the game.

Overall

Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer is a fun game, and it will likely be entertaining for fans of the Animal Crossing series and players who are simply interested in interior design. Unfortunately, it does not offer much outside of the designing element. The main part of the game can be finished in just a few hours, and it lacks a socialisation feature. The suggested retail price is high for what does not feel like a full game, but it does exactly what many internally developed Nintendo games do: it provides a fun experience for players who are willing to give it a go.

Minecraft: Story Mode – The Order of the Stone Review

Minecraft: Story Mode – The Order of the Stone
Developer: Telltale Games
Publisher: Telltale Games
Platforms: PC, iOS, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One (Reviewed)
Release Date: October 14, 2015
Price: $4.99 – Available Here

Overview
Over the years Telltale Games has managed to land a number of popular licensed properties and turn out golden series with only a few misses here and there. When it was announced that they would be tackling Minecraft and providing an original storyline set in the world, some were skeptical but now that the first episode, The Order of the Stone, has been released for Minecraft: Story Mode, is this series worth starting?

Story
Players begin by selecting how they want their main character to look and whether they wish to be a male or female. Once this decision is made they find themselves placed in the shoes of Jesse, an aspiring builder who is a huge fan of the legendary heroes known as the Order of the Stone. These four heroes are renown for different things, such as their prowess in battle, building skills, and more, and are best known for venturing forth into the Ender and defeating the Ender Dragon.

Since they managed to accomplish this feat, the group has long since disbanded but one of the heroes will soon be attending the Ender Con that will be held at a nearby location near Jesse’s location. Teaming up with his friends, a confident girl named Olivia, the loyal but occasionally annoying Alex, and his pet pig named Reuben, Jesse enters a building contest where they try to win firsthand tickets to meet one of their heroes.

Of course, regardless of how things unfold during the build contest Jesse and the group eventually find themselves as the few people who can gather those who can put an end to a threat awakened due to the unknown past of the Order of the Stone. This type of revelation comes late in the first episode serves as the only element of actual groundwork being laid for a story beyond the big bad creature threatening to swallow the world.

minecraft-story-mode-screenshot-003

The rest of the story up to this point serves in laying the groundwork for the world of Minecraft: Story Mode, as we see that your average person in this story simply lives their life out without really digging for treasures and always building elaborate set pieces. Of course these elements will play out best for those who are fans of Minecraft and know of the series’ various mechanics, such as how enemies appear at night and in dark locations, the threats that roam through the Nether, and other nuances that are only barely touched upon for those who are newcomers to the series.

As one may expect considering the subject material, Minecraft: Story Mode is a departure from what Telltale has previously been known for in their stories. Adopting a more family friendly approach, the series does feel like it lacks some element of actual drama here as most choices made by the player carry very little immediate weight and only a few appear to actually change how things may unfold later on, though the final choice may play a heavy role on how events at least start to unfold in the second episode.

minecraft-story-mode-screenshot-001

While the dramatic elements may not deliver despite the “life and death” situations still being there, only playing zero role so far, the comedy is still fairly enjoyable. It is worth noting that quite a number of the jokes do rely on player knowledge from the series as certain references and a few easter eggs may only be caught by fans of the source material. That being said, there are a number of rather humorous segments parodying the nature of Minecraft as a whole via a montage which even non-fans will enjoy while the character interactions are enjoyable enough for players to get a bead on each of their personalities.

Gameplay
Although the core game may rely on players wandering around and gathering items to craft things, Minecraft: Story Mode doesn’t step outside the boundaries of what Telltale Games are known for lately. The majority of the time players will spend in this first episode involves making dialogue decisions or taking part in quick time events. It is worth noting that even the building aspect, which comes up a few times in this episode, is handled simply through tapping a button as quick as possible as the characters gather and build.

minecraft-story-mode-the-order-of-the-stone-screenshot-002

There are a few light puzzles mixed into the fray as well, mostly in the form of a creating items on a crafting table in a method that fans will enjoy, especially if they decide to take the humorous route, and taking part in a switch puzzle that is easy to solve. Outside of the puzzles there are of course the action sequences that see the player having to tap a button or move the analog stick to dodge and for the most part, many of these sequences won’t even result in player death. A few pieces of combat where players do have to move forward and take a swing at enemies do appear from time to time but are nothing more than simple scenes that provide a little extra control over what Jesse is doing.

Visuals & Audio
In a departure from what Telltale is used to, Minecraft: Story Mode appears to have been developed using the exact Minecraft engine making sure that almost every element of the game is visually represented in the series’ iconic blocky low-res style. The enemies, environment, and various materials are all replicated here perfectly and some of the designs that are shown throughout The Order of the Stone are quite a treat for those who like elaborate looking buildings.

minecraft-story-mode-the-order-of-the-stone-screenshot-001

The developers have also managed to take the low detailed character models and successfully put just enough expressions onto their faces as needed by either widening or narrowing their eyes and using their eyebrows to great effect to convey emotion in a manner that works very well given the cartoon nature of the designs.

Speaking of the characters, it is worth noting that the voice actors for the cast have done an impressive job with their roles here, with the male Jesse being voiced by Patton Oswalt and a number of other well-known voice actors stepping in to give their characters enough personality to stand out despite their simplistic appearances.

Overall
The Order of the Stone kicks things off for Minecraft: Story Mode and it does so in a fairly tepid way. While it does get Jesse and the gang moving towards trying to put a stop to the dangerous being threatening their world, it only shows its real colors in the last five minutes. Although the writers opted to play it as safe as possible at the start of this series, the first episode does serve as a decent foundation for events that will unfold later on and gives Minecraft fans a perfectly recreated world with a decent amount of humor that I can only hope will be expanded upon in the future.

Modders began lowering their cars close to the ground, and a little later in response to new laws, adding hydraulic lifts to the vehicles. Decades later, it’s a vibrant mod scene known for its colourful paint jobs and the signature low to the ground look.

Benny’s Original Motor Works serves as the customization hub for six vehicles that accept a variety of mods like covers air filters, new interiors, custom paint jobs, better speaker systems, and hydraulic lift systems. Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator Popularity Poll Reveals Dizzy as Next Playable Character

guilty-gear-xrd-revelator-poll-screenshot-001

Arc System Works had been holding a character popularity contest to try and select the next playable character that would be added to Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator and only those who played the game in arcades could vote at the time. Now that the contest has wrapped up the company has announced who will be joining the fighting game next and it just so happens to be my personal favorite, Dizzy. Dizzy won by a fairly slim margin as she was followed closely by Bridget and Baiken, only beating Bridget by a few hundred votes.

Currently there is no set date on when Dizzy will be added to Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator but currently the title is set to be released in Japan on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 in Spring 2016.
