Zelda Wii U/NX Renamed to Breath of the Wild, New Gameplay

Legend-of-zelda-breath-of-the-wild-screenshot-01

Zelda, Zelda, Zelda! Zelda was the core focus of Nintendo’s E3 campaign and they delivered big time with heaps of new news, trailers and gameplay footage. Let’s break it down.

First up, the game has been renamed to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Straight away, you know this is a very different Zelda experience, one more focused on open world exploration, survival and RPG elements. The world looks beautiful and also full of variety with many different locales shown in the trailer such as fields, beaches and canyons.

The new trailer also opens with voice acting. Yes, it seems this new Zelda may be the first to feature voice acting. We don’t know if Link himself will be voiced, but it seems characters around him will. Also note I said himself there. There have been a lot of rumours about Link being able to be a female in this game but those rumours were squashed.

Link’s ‘female’ appearance was likely a consequence of the new ability to have different outfits in the game that will not only change your look but affect your stats and bestow special abilities upon you.

There’s also heaps of other cool reveals in this trailer so I’ll list them in dot points below.

  • Link can mount any wild horse he discovers.
  • Time of day seems to be important, with a time shown on the mini map indicating a day/night cycle.
  • The game will also sport dynamic weather. Rain for example may put out fires.
  • As expected the world is littered with secrets. The map will have around 100 ‘shrines’ which are like mini dungeons with puzzles to solve.
  • There is a sprint and jump button.
  • Link can climb any vertical surface. This will be tied to a stamina meter similar to how actions were in Skyward Sword.

  • Link can chop down trees to make a bridge.
  • Link can swim, hunt animals and set fire to grass. Using the environment will play a big part in surviving. If you kill an animal, it will turn into meat with a puff of smoke.
  • Links weapons will break with use, forcing you to find enemies and take their weapons.
  • Link has access to various technologies in this game. It seems one item grants him the ability to create platforms anywhere in the world, even generating them midair to fall on enemies. This item is called the Shiekah Slate.
  • Dodging and attacking with good timing seems to initiate a slow down mechanic allowing you to do more damage and unleash a new rush attack.
  • There seems to be a large variety of clothes you can wear including a full set of armour. In colder environments, you will have to dress warmer or else lose health as you progress.

  • There also seems to be a lot of variety in the in game weapons which have an ‘attack value’. Examples include sticks, bows, swords, axes, clubs and more.
  • There are now square bombs, conveniently shaped to not roll everywhere. Round bombs are back too.
  • You can ride your shield down snowy mountains like a
  • The Master Sword is in the game somewhere/somehow.
  • Enemies live in colonies and inhabit certain regions of the map.
  • The big spider mechanical things from the first trailer are called Guardians.

Legend-of-Zelda-Breath-of-the-Wild-Screenshot-23

  • There is lot’s of wild life and resources to gather such as fruit and meat. This is important as Link now needs to eat to restore his health, cutting grass (which you can still do) will no longer yield hearts. Food may also grant other abilities such as increased strength.
  • Reggie describes the E3 demo as only a tiny bit of the map, but says it is also huge and no one at E3 will be able to explore the whole thing.
  • Ganon will be in the game in some capacity.
  • The Wolf Link amiibo can be scanned in and then helps Link hunt animals and attack enemies.
  • Off-screen play on the GamePad is confirmed, the Pro Controller can also be used.
  • There will be no difference between the Wii U and NX version of the game although we theorize the NX version will definitely look and run better.

Legend-of-Zelda-Breath-of-the-Wild-Screenshot-19

Wow that’s a lot to take in. This Zelda looks like it could eclipse all before it. Of course, what would a major Nintendo release these days be without a new amiibo tie in. Nintendo will be releasing three new amiibo, including Link on a horse, Link firing his bow and a Guardian amiibo. The legs on the Guardian amiibo can be posed to your liking.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be releasing on the Wii U and the Nintendo NX sometime in 2017.

Days Gone Revealed for the PlayStation 4

Days-Gone-screenshot- (5)

Following the announcement that a new God of War game is on the way Sony Interactive Entertainment continued with their E3 2016 press conference by bringing out Bend Studio to announce that they are working on a title called Days Gone for the PlayStation 4.

Days Gone is set in the beautiful, volcanic scarred high-desert of the Pacific Northwest and is an open-world action-adventure game where you play as Deacon St. John, a Drifter and bounty hunter who would rather risk the dangers of the broken road than live in one of the “safe” wilderness encampments. The game takes place two years after a global pandemic has killed almost everyone, but transformed millions of others into what survivors call Freakers – mindless, feral creatures, more animal than human but very much alive and quickly evolving.

Skills learned in his prior life as an outlaw biker have given Deacon a slight edge in the seemingly never-ending fight to stay alive. But will it be enough? Currently no release date has been given for Days Gone but you can check out the reveal trailer and gameplay trailer below.

God of War announced for PlayStation 4

god-of-war-2016-screenshot- (1)

Sony kicked off their press conference by revealing that SIE Santa Monica Studio is working on a new God of War title that is simply going to be called God of War for now. The title has not been given a release date at this time but it is in development for the PlayStation 4 and over ten minutes of gameplay footage have been released and you can check that out below.

Santa Monica’s Cory Barlog has stated that the company didn’t want to simply reboot the God of War franchise, starting over with a retelling of the origin story and instead wanted to reimagine the gameplay, give players a fresh perspective and a new tactile experience while delving deeper into the emotional journey of Kratos to explore the compelling drama that unfolds when an immortal demigod makes a decision to change.

god-of-war-2016-screenshot- (3)

For Kratos, this change means breaking the cycle of violence, distrust and deception that his family, the Greek pantheon, perpetuated for so long. That cycle drove a whole host of bad decisions – the ill-fated deal with Ares, the murder of his family and a rage fueled descent into madness and vengeance that ultimately ended with the epic destruction of Olympus. It also means learning how to control his rage, the intensely turbulent monster that lives within him, steering him down ever-darker paths. Kratos needed to figure out how to put the monster back in the box, how to control when he does and does not let that monster out.

Sony also revealed that a number of third party developers are working on PlayStation VR-only and PlayStation VR-compatible titles, including Resident Evil 7: biohazard, Farpoint, Batman: Arkham VR, and Final Fantasy XV: VR Experience.

First Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 Gameplay Plus New Details

xenoverse-2-screenshot-06

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 was announced last month with a great launch trailer to get us all hyped, however it featured no gameplay. Now Bandai Namco have given us a first look at a one on one match, pitting Future Gohan (unfortunately with both arms intact) against the original evil Goku, Turles.

While it seems like not too much has changed from this short fight, a number of improvements have been made that I personally noticed.

  • 60 FPS on all platforms.
  • Improved hit detection.
  • Seems to be a z-dash mechanic added like the old Tenkaichi 3 days where you can dash behind them quickly.
  • Basic ki blast bend and seem to home in more than before.
  • Seems to be a bit more variety in how you can vanish and step around the arena.
  • Maybe the lock on cursor is gone but with no HUD in the trailer could easily just be for the trailer.

xenoverse-2-screenshot-02

Bandai Namco also released some more official information on the game in some neat dot points alongside some screenshots. Inside this information drop was also a more specific release window of Autumn 2016, where as before all we had was a 2016 release date.

  • Relive the Dragon Ball story by time traveling and changing historic moments in the Dragon Ball universe
  • Next-gen visuals bring the Dragon Ball anime experience to life
  • New characters and boss fights
  • Brand new hub city 7X the size of the original game with 300 players online at the same time
  • More in depth character creation system
  • Updates and post launch support for up to one year

xenoverse-2-screenshot-03

Looks like we can definitely get excited about Xenoverse 2 with all those new additions and it’s great to see the game will be supported for at least one year. We are sure some of that will be paid DLC however Xenoverse 1 also had some great free support with costume pieces, new modes and patches.

We can definitely expect more news from the Japan Expo which begins on July 10th and will have the games producer present. Check out the new screenshots and gameplay footage below and let us know what you think about the improvements in the comments below.

UPDATE: A couple new details have been released. The city hubs name is Conton city. You  will be able to fly around the city after your character reaches a certain level and there are some new things to do in the city such as attend a school, which could be a replacement for the mentor system in Xenoverse 1. Cooler seems like he will be apart of the story and playable roster as well, showing up in the big fight between Frieza and Super Saiyan Goku.

Capcom has announced that they are working on a brand new type of game for the Resident Evil series in the form of Resident Evil 7: biohazard. Resident Evil 7: biohazard is being developed using a brand new in-house engine and takes place after the events of Resident Evil 6 and takes place in modern day revolving around a foreboding, derelict plantation mansion in rural America. Players must explore and “survive the horrors within the mysterious, sprawling estate.”

Mass Effect: Andromeda Protagonist’s Last Name is Ryder

Mass-Effect-Andromeda-screenshot-009

You may remember that throughout the entire trilogy of Mass Effect players took control of Commander Shepard. No matter which gender you selected or the first name you chose to use, the character would always be referred to as Shepard. Now with Mass Effect: Andromeda moving away from the original trilogy many have wondered just what the next protagonist will be called. Well it seems that the producer of Mass Effect: Andromeda, Michael Gamble, decided to provide that news through a simple message revealing that the new protagonist will have the last name of Ryder.

At the moment very little is known about what Ryder’s journey will entail but EA is currently aiming to have Mass Effect: Andromeda released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in early 2017.

Steep, an Open-World Action Sports Game, Announced for December Release

steep-screenshot- (9)

One of the more interesting announcements that Ubisoft made during their E3 2016 presentation came in the form of an action sports game that will take place in an open world set in the Alps. The title is called Steep and it will be released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC sometime in December. Developed by Ubisoft Annecy, Steep drops players onto the peaks of mountains, with exhilarating experiences that include skiing, wingsuiting, snowboarding, and paragliding.

These sports establish an incredible level of freedom to explore the game’s open world, allowing players to choose the way they travel and play. Steep’s vast playground offers a wide range of activities that give players the opportunity to discover, compete, pull off crazy stunts, and more. Players can meet with friends from all over the world to create unique and memorable moments.

In Steep, players can use the innovative trail feature to relive their most inspiring rides and trailblazing achievements, and share them on social networks with friends. Along with sharing ride replays, players can also use this feature to challenge friends to outrace them on a shared path, create epic stunts or set out to discover the massive mountain playground.
