The Jarvis Project to Feature Cablepunk Art Style

jarvis-project-promo-shot-02

Finnish indie developers Housemarque (Alienation) may not have settled on a name for their upcoming game currently dubbed Jarvis Project but they announced today that they will be shooting for a cablepunk art style. In contrast to the clean and sleek lines of traditional science fiction, the Jarvis Project is a grungy look full of cables. Cablepunk is designed to be a retro offshoot of cyberpunk. Jarvis Project game director Harry Krueger sat down in a new dev diary to talk about Cablepunk, to reveal the game’s first major enemy, and to show off some new concept art.

Jarvis Project is an upcoming hardcore game designed to pit players against each other in an arcade style leaderboard. Housemarque is working with legendary game designer Eugene Jarvis (Defender) to develop the new game. No word on a release date, but the game will launch on PC and PlayStation 4.

Nintendo NX Rumoured to be a Handheld Hybrid and Use Cartridges

nintendo-logo-01

Nintendo have been playing their cards close to their chest when it comes to their next future console code named the Nintendo NX. All we know for 100% sure is that it will be launching in March 2017 and has two confirmed launch titles, Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Sonic Project 2017. However a new rumour from Eurogamer.net claimed to be supported by multiple sources has leaked some major details on the secretive console.

Here are all the big details from the leaks. Of course until Nintendo confirms anything these are of course rumours, but the details listed here do seem likely with some of these points being rumoured multiple times before.

  • The Nintendo NX will be a home console/portable hybrid device.
  • To achieve this, the main controller will be a tablet/touch screen like device that has connections for one detachable controller on either side. Picture a Wii U GamePad except you can remove the bits on the side of the screen.
  • Physical gaming media will be in the form of cartridges that are being recommended to hold 32GB’s of data. These cartridges will be inserted into the controller for portable gaming.
  • The NX will feature a Nvidia Tegra mobile processor. What this means is the console will most likely be slightly weaker performance wise than it’s current generation cousins the PS4 and Xbox One.
  • The NX can be plugged into a dock that is connected to your TV for the full home console experience.
  • Due to the design differences, backwards compatibility is unlikely to be included in any capacity.
  • The NX will have a Nintendo created operating system.
  • Nintendo is planning to unveil the NX in September with a more simple message to avoid confusion as there was with the Wii U launch.

TOM CLANCY’S RAINBOW SIX® SIEGE SKULL RAIN UPDATE AVAILABLE AUGUST 2

TOM CLANCY’S RAINBOW SIX® SIEGE SKULL RAIN UPDATE AVAILABLE AUGUST 2

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – July 27, 2016 – Ubisoft® has announced that Skull Rain, the third major update for Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege will be available on August 2 for Microsoft Xbox One®, Sony Playstation®4 computer entertainment system and Windows PC. Continuing the commitment to provide new post-launch content for the game, this third free content update introduces two new Operators and includes a new map and gameplay features.

New Favela Map and Two New BOPE Operators

In Skull Rain, the Favela map is the most destructible and open environment to date in Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege. Two BOPE Operators, Caveria and Capitão, have been enlisted to provide their expertise of the region and assist local law enforcement in regaining control of the area.

  • Caveira has a reputation for being a brutal interrogator. She is equipped with the “Luison”, a unique PRB92 with a custom suppressor and subsonic ammunition, which gives her the ability to incapacitate targets quietly. In addition, her “the Silent Step” stealth technique, allows her to lurk on prey undetected.
  • Capitão is equipped with the Tactical Crossbow TARS Mk0 and has the ability to fire two types of ammunition: lethal asphyxiating bolts and micro smoke grenades that deliver swift and agile assaults.

Improved Gameplay Experience

  • Surrender System for Ranked Matches

If the competition becomes too rough, players can now cast a vote for their team to surrender during a Ranked match. This will end the game and allow players to move onto another match. This new feature will be available prior to the 3rd round.

  • Custom Game Mode: Tactical Realism

Introducing a new gameplay mode available in Custom Games, Tactical Realism was created to further immersion where tension runs high as players must carefully assess, coordinate, and communicate their movements at all time.

  • New Attachment: The Angled Grip

Catering to a variety of playstyles, the angled grip accelerates the transition between hip fire and ADS, which allows for an aggressive ad fast-paced playstyle.

As with previous updates, the new Operators are immediately unlocked for Season Pass owners, with exclusive access granted for seven days. All players can then unlock the Operators with Renown or R6 Credits after the exclusive period ends on August 9. The Favela Map will be available for all players on August 2.

About Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege

Inspired by real-world counter-terrorist organizations, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege puts players in the middle of lethal close-quarter confrontations. For the first time in a Rainbow Six game, players will engage in sieges, a new style of assault where enemies have the means to transform their environments into modern strongholds while Rainbow Six teams lead the assault to breach the enemy’s position. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege gives players unprecedented control over their ability to fortify their position by reinforcing walls and floors, using barbed wire and deployable shields, laying mines and more, or to breach the enemies’ position using observation drones, setting charges, rappelling and more. The fast pace and uniqueness of each siege sets a new bar for intense firefights, strategic gameplay and competitive gaming.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIII

Developer: Koei Tecmo
Publisher: Koei Tecmo
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4 (Reviewed)
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $59.99 USD – Available Here $89.95 AUD – Available Here

Overview

Those who do not study Chinese history but tend to play at least a few games here and there are likely more than familiar with the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. This is primarily due to the fact that Koei Tecmo has taken the series of novels covering that time period and turned them into a blossoming franchise throughout the years, digging into action games with the Dynasty Warriors series and the strategic element with the Romance of the Three Kingdoms games. After skipping the release of the twelfth game in the series, Koei Tecmo has released Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIII in the West for the game’s thirtieth anniversary so now that it has arrived on English shores once again, is it worth picking up?

Story

In an effort to ensure that those who play this game are given a way to acclimate themselves to the various complexities of the mechanics, Koei Tecmo has developed an interesting story mode for the game that is also designed to be a tutorial. This is called Hero Mode and covers the detailed history of the Three Kingdoms by walking players through various features in the game while also going over the various large scale events such as how certain groups came to power, famous warriors met one another, and how empires fell.

romance-of-the-three-kingdoms-screenshot-(76)By telling players the story through the tutorial the game helps acclimate newcomers to the series in more ways than once as it serves as an entry to what can be a very complex game as well as tell the story that most fans of the franchise are already more than familiar with at this point since, outside of “what if” events, the story remains the same. It is worth noting that thanks to every character, of which there are hundreds of unique ones, having different flavor text and relationships with other characters in history, it is incredibly easy to get overwhelmed by the amount of information that players are given at one time but generally this deluge of information rarely costs the player much if they happen to miss out on any of the smaller details.

Gameplay

When players begin the game outside of the aforementioned tutorial/story mode that is the Hero Mode, players will be given a number of major events to start the game from, starting with the Yellow Turban Rebellion. These options will change the initial lay out of the various nations that are warring for power in China as well as what historic events will take place. These can all be tweaked by allowing historic characters to appear in random cities or to allow the AI to act freely rather than historically, creating a new path of fiction.

romance-of-the-three-kingdoms-13-screenshot- (45)This can be transitioned into the Edit Officer aspect of the game as well. Players can freely create a number of characters, modify their stats as they see fit (ranging from creating a warrior to a strategist to completely maxing out everything if you feel like it), and even set up their history with other characters in the game, meaning you can already establish yourself as a sworn ally or enter a relationship with a historic figure.

Before entering a scenario players can choose to select from a list of recommended officers, select from the hundreds available, or choose their custom officers. This allows for players to do everything from setting themselves up as a ruler of one city hoping to expand or even start as a mercenary that is looking for a new master to follow. Depending on the role the player takes they will find a number of options available to them and while you might only play a small role as a low-ranked soldier, your actions can begin to affect your stationed city and even allow for you to rank up in the kingdom and eventually make bigger changes when you earn the trust of your fellow officers.

romance-of-the-three-kingdoms-13-screenshot- (42)Those who place themselves in complete positions of power will often find themselves juggling a number of aspects of the game as they seek to try and build up a city’s commerce, farming, and culture while also trying to train soldiers in an effort to unlock more elite forces, balancing the fealty of your people by going on patrols, and also trying to keep nearby villages happy and not swayed to swear loyalty to a rival kingdom. This balancing act makes for quite a few hectic scenes that can take place, especially thanks to the fact that this title is so full of menu navigation that players who aren’t used to that kind of thing will find it quite daunting, but thanks to the Hero Mode walking through most of the things that can occur and the ability to pause time to try and sort things out, the overwhelming amount of tasks to keep an eye on can be manageable most of the time.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIII offers a number of different options when it comes to facing off against other nations. Players can opt to simply go to war, which can be rather damning at times since being unprepared can lead to some dire circumstances such as facing off against a well-prepared force that is eager to steam through your territory with over ninety thousand soldiers, or they can take a more diplomatic approach by building trust with other officers and even marrying in an effort to keep the peace. The game features a graph that allows for players to learn who each officer is familiar with and then by becoming friends with them, you can grow your network of potential allies to a massive extent.

romance-of-the-three-kingdoms-13-screenshot- (26)Of course when everything comes to head, most of the time you will need to take to the battlefield to put an end to things. When entering into a battle players will either wage war in a field where bases are split between their force and the enemy force or at a castle where they will either be on the defense or forced to lay siege, using items such as battering rams, siege towers, and ladders to break down gates or avoid them altogether. These battles can be incredibly hectic to control, primarily thanks to the simplistic controls that are given to the player and the widely inconsistent camera angles making it difficult to select a certain force instead of simply selecting multiple units as a group.

Morale plays a heavy role in combat and by listening to your allies suggestions, such as defending a base or flanking an enemy unit, can temporarily boost your own company’s morale while surrounding or pincer attacking an enemy can force theirs to plummet. Units that are almost entirely out of morale will begin to flee and this allows players to devastate their troop count and eliminate them from a battle. Occasionally in battle, and outside of it as well when on patrol or taking on other objectives, players will find themselves placed into a duel with a rival officer.

romance-of-the-three-kingdoms-XIII-screenshot-(72)These duels are five turn mini-games where the officers will clash and then use various types of attack and defense to overcome their opponent. This includes the likes of performing basic attacks, attempting to unsteady your opponent, or even focusing to try and use a special attack. If neither fighter wins by the end of the five rounds the winner is determined by their health meter. Various stats such as an officer’s skill in duels and other stats will play a role in how much damage can be dealt and this is mirrored in the “debate” duels. Following the same guidelines, players will need to talk down an official, either to sway a decision in your favor or to secure a village, and make use of assertions, rebuttals, provocations, etc. to prove your point.

This element is unfortunately fairly limited as both duels and debates can play a major role in the outcome of a battle, as defeated officers will cause a ripple effect across a battlefield but more often than not the outcome appears more random than anything else. In fact, when your own unit isn’t participating in a duel and one of your allies is instead, the ally AI will almost always fail even if they have a distinct advantage.

Visuals & Audio

By featuring a massive amount of unique units one would wonder just how far a company would go to make sure they all stand out in some manner and when it comes to Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIII it turns out, quite far. Almost every single officer players encounter are represented with gorgeously drawn character portraits, though it is worth noting that a couple portraits do place the character in a rather strange pose that usually don’t fit the situations they are shown in. Outside of the character portraits, players see practically everything at a distance and everything ranging from the designs to the cities to the battlefields players fight on is simplistically designed.

romance-of-the-three-kingdoms-13-screenshot- (43)As far as the voice tracks are concerned, players will be able to choose from either the Japanese voice track or the Chinese voice track if they feel like going with the authentic experience. The soundtrack features a number of period fitting tracks that range from calming tunes while traveling between cities and while residing in a city and some more action oriented music, albeit nothing too heavy compared to the Warriors version of the game, during combat.

Overall

Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIII is a rather hardcore strategy game that allows players to tackle as much responsibility as they feel like they can handle at any given time by either jumping into the deep end as a leader of an army or starting out as a free officer. That being said, although the various mechanics are explained well, trying to navigate through the numerous menus and selecting units in combat is a pain to deal with and while the game may feature some outstanding character portraits, the overall appearance of the title is quite bland which gives the title little excuse to suffer from the amount of slowdown that it does during combat.

10 Second Ninja X Review

10 Second Ninja X

Developer: Four Circle Interactive
Publisher: Curve Digital
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4 (Reviewed), PS Vita, Xbox One
Release Date: July 19, 2016
Price: $9.99 USD – Available Here

Overview

Following up on their successful launch of 10 Second Ninja, Four Circle Interactive has returned with a number of new stages, a release on multiple platforms, and a new enemy for the blue ninja to face off against. With only ten seconds to tackle each stage, is 10 Second Ninja X worth your time?

Story

While the blue ninja who is never given a name, outside of being called the Guardian of the Forest, is resting in the middle of said forest, the evil pirate Captain Greatbeard has descended in his flying ship and kidnapped all of the woodland creatures that the ninja was so fond of. The problem is, the only way to save these creatures is to face off against Greatbeard’s challenges as he has placed the creatures inside of robots that the ninja must destroy in a large collection of stages.

10-second-ninja-x-screenshot-110 Second Ninja X sets itself up with a fairly simple premise and while the story really doesn’t go anywhere special, it has enough witty comedy mixed in, a few little quirky moments, and special easter eggs for players to find that help give the story a little extra kick outside of simply setting up the premise.

Gameplay

The core concept of 10 Second Ninja X is as simple as the name sounds. Players will be placed into a stage where they must eliminate every robot in the stage in ten seconds or less. They are given the ninja’s trusted blade, three shurikens, and a double jump ability to start out with and while this may sound simple it is far from easy. This is because while it may sound simple, executing these tasks will require failing over and over again in an effort to learn how each stage can be completed as quickly as possible.

10-second-ninja-x-screenshot-2Thanks to the incredibly tight control mechanics, players will be able to easily control the movements of the ninja while trying to time their double jumps correctly to avoid instant death electrocutions and placing themselves in the perfect position to take down a line of enemies with a shuriken. If things aren’t going your way, players can instantly tap a button to restart a level and this is a real nice touch since this action game is more like a puzzle game in many aspects.

I say this because players will need to learn from their mistakes and change how they handle the stages in order to succeed with the fastest time. This means that practice makes perfect and considering that players must complete stages as fast as possible in order to earn the most stars possible, in order to unlock more levels, this is required to progress in the game. You see, simply completing a stage might give you one star but with each stage offering three stars in total and further levels locked behind star requirements, players are encouraged to go back and try levels until they master them and thanks to the short time frame here, these frustrating but short experiences are still worthwhile.

10-second-ninja-x-screenshot-3That being said, this is also a game that does not scale in any way to the player’s initial abilities. While it is possible to unlock the second set of stages without really putting much effort into the game, even the first set of stages throw players into the deep end requiring blisteringly fast times in order to earn the three star rating. This means that newcomers will likely be put off by the steep difficulty curve that the game employs right at the start.

For everyone else, the game gradually ramps up the difficulty of levels as players make it further into the game, eventually adding various switches and similar puzzle elements to stages that players will need to quickly activate in order to open up/close/lift platforms to reach their goal. Even the enemies slowly begin to throw different challenges at the player since, at the start, every foe can be defeated with a slash from the sword or one shuriken toss but eventually they will gain shields that require two hits to defeat or even energy shields that will kill the ninja if they cut them.

10-second-ninja-x-screenshot-4For especially gifted players 10 Second Ninja X offers leaderboards showing off the fastest times and if you manage to collection a hundred and twenty stars in total, you can access a large number of legacy levels taken directly from the original game but revamped to fit in with this newer game’s art style. As such, while the punishment that the game dishes out can be quite high, there are rewards for pushing past the frustration.

Visuals & Audio

This game features a simple art style that is bright and colorful which works well considering the game’s cartoonish nature. The various stages are varied and well-designed enough that players will rarely find themselves feeling bored with the areas on hand. The title features no voice work outside of small indistinguishable noises when a character talks and as far as the soundtrack is concerned, players will find a fairly standard set of background music that goes well with the fast paced action of the game but nothing really special.

Overall

10 Second Ninja X makes for an addictive bite-sized action platformer that doubles as something of a puzzle game as players will need to fail constantly in order to learn the patterns and best route to take to finish a level as fast as possible to ensure that they can continue on. If you manage to master the gameplay you’ll find that the ten second time limits do result in a game that can be rather short, but even with this fault this is the type of punishing platformer that will see players returning in an effort to one up their previous attempts.

Corpse Party PC Review

corpse-party-pc-artwork-001
Corpse Party

Developer: Team GrisGris, 5pb
Publisher: XSEED Games
Platform: PC
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $14.99 USD – Available Here

Overview

Most of the fans of Corpse Party first learned about the series back when the game debuted in the West for the PSP back in 2011. In fact, this version of the game did so well that a pair of sequel games were also localized and even anime and manga adaptations have made their way to the West.  Only a few of these fans likely knew that the series did not begin back in 2011 but all the way back in 1996 for the PC and now the 2008 enhanced version of the PC game is now available in English. That being said, is this version worth picking up?

Story

During a stormy night a group of students are telling ghost stories as a sort of, going away party for one of their friends who will be moving away. While the class representative Ayumi is telling a particularly scary story, their teacher arrives and frightens them all. Bringing with her Yuka, Satoshi’s younger sister, she tells the group to wrap things up. Before the group splits up, Ayumi suggest that they perform a special doll ritual to ensure that they all remain friends forever.

corpse-party-pc-screenshot- (1)Although the group is warned that if things go wrong, something terrible will happen the group continues to go through with the act. After things go horribly awry, the nine members wake up to find themselves almost entirely separated from one another and surrounded by a hellish landscape littered with broken windows, dilapidated woodwork, and worst of all… dead bodies and gore everywhere.

It isn’t long before these displaced survivors find themselves encountering hostile spirits that are all too eager to fill the halls of the haunted school of Heavenly Host with more death. With death a constant possibility, players step into the shoes of multiple characters over the course of five chapters where they must explore the school and try to unravel the mysteries that lie within in an effort to find out why they ended up there and also how to escape with their lives.

corpse-party-pc-screenshot- (3)As you navigate through the various chapters in Corpse Party it will quickly become clear that the title is one that favors a little trial and error as it is entirely possible to stumble upon an event that will either immediately result in a bad end, called “wrong end,” or lock you into an early end for the chapter, resulting in the player needing to go through once again in order to find the true ending though it is highly recommended to keep an extra save to avoid this.

A few of the bad ends are quite gruesome as one may expect from a game such as Corpse Party but unlike the latter versions of the game, this title does not feature quite as much detail when it comes to some of these scenes. Nor are a few of the things meant to trip players up as hard to figure out as they are in later games, meaning that players should be able to figure out the correct path without too much trouble.

corpse-party-pc-screenshot-(13)

Despite this, the story told in this original PC version of Corpse Party is still as gripping as ever with players never knowing exactly who will make it out alive and what may happen next. The title employs its own brand of psychological horror that the series has come to be known for and although the tone of the game can shift wildly thanks to some odd things that the characters say or a girl’s inability to go to the bathroom anywhere but a toilet, those who want to play a horror game will still be satisfied here.

Gameplay

For those unfamiliar with the Corpse Party titles, players will need to navigate through the halls of Heavenly Host Elementary from a top-down perspective while trying to find clues all while avoiding various traps as well as spirits and others that wish to do them harm. There is an HP system to worry about though this usually only comes to play when the player is at risk of heading towards a bad end when their HP runs out.

An interesting aspect of Corpse Party’s gameplay is the fact that while exploring a level and interacting with objects in the world there are very few indications that what the player did is actually the correct thing to do. In fact simply activating certain items may lock you into a bad end as mentioned earlier with no warning until it is already too late. This means players will need to use their best judgment to avoid an early end.

corpse-party-pc-screenshot-(14)

Add to the fact that the creepy hallways and entities that players will be encountering work so well together and players will need to be on their toes quite often or run the risk of dying as well. That being said, sometimes finding these bad ends and unlocking extra chapters does help expand the game a bit more so don’t be too afraid to stumble around a bit and be sure to read the various notes left behind by those who couldn’t make it out alive.

Visuals & Audio

It is worth noting that this PC version of the game has been enhanced a bit since the original release but it still falls far behind the PSP Version in delivering a truly atmospheric experience alongside the lack of the gruesome CGs that unsettled many during the wrong endings. This means that while the storyline may still be quite interesting and feel like a real horror game, the visuals of the title falter in this regard. This is especially true in regards to the character portraits in the title.

corpse-party-pc-screenshot- (6)While the characters are still occasionally shown with sprite dialogue boxes, most of the time during dialogue sequences they are portrayed via surprisingly badly detailed character portraits that look completely out of place compared to the rest of the game. Thankfully the Japanese voice work is still fairly well done, for the most part, and the music once again serves as a great enhancement to the eerie nature of the school.

Overall

Corpse Party’s PC version still manages to deliver a satisfying storyline of horror and survival as players must guide these students through a horrific world where death is almost a complete certainty and even the bad endings deliver some form of morbid entertainment. Unfortunately while it does offer a slightly altered version of the game to experience, the PC version falls to deliver the same feeling of tense horror that the PSP remake managed to years ago. This version does serve as a great way for those who may not have the chance to try out the original release but don’t expect the same level of quality in this version compared to the PSP version.

About Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force

Long ago, a war was waged between the Vile God and the Goddess.

The battle was fierce; the two were equally matched. Finally, both sides unleashed special weapons that contained fairies imbued with their power. Using this power, each god sealed away the other within another world. And so, time passed… The weapons that the Goddess and the Vile God left were called Furies, and the warriors who used them were called Fencers. Rumors arose that the Furies were so powerful, whoever collected them all would be granted one wish. As a result, Fencers fought each other endlessly to obtain them.

By chance, a young man named Fang happened to unwittingly become a Fencer, and saved a girl named Tiara. And she, too, was a Fencer. From that day forward, Fang found himself an important part of the battle between the Goddess and the Vile God.

Key Features

  • Three Stories, Three Paths! In the three stories to play – the Goddess story, the Vile God story, and the Evil Goddess story – friends become foes, foes become friends, and, based on your choices, multiple endings can be unlocked!

Today’s game launch also marks the release of the Headlander Official Soundtrack, composed by David Gregory Earl and created using tape and analog synthesizers to deliver a distinctive, groovy 70s sci-fi soundscape. Read about the music-creation process and hear a variety of track samples on the PlayStation Blog, where you can also check out a music video to get a sense of how the soundtrack reflects the far-out game aesthetic. The soundtrack is available in a bundle with Headlander on Steam for $24.99.

Set in a world inspired by 70s science fiction, Headlander puts you into the shoes… errr… disembodied head of the last known human in the universe. Seeking clues to your fractured past, you must travel through a hostile world of machines using a special helmet that allows you to dock into and take control of any robotic host body. As you launch from one body to the next, you’ll start to discover that things are not quite what they appear to be, and the fate of humanity has yet to be decided.
