The Flagship Microsoft Store Sydney has today announced it is partnering with Code Like a Girl to bring a series of free coding workshops to girls aged 6-15 years old from Monday 9th July to Sunday 15th July 2018. The workshops aim to address the need for skilled female information communications technology (ICT) specialists, working to empower and inspire young girls to get involved in coding and encourage this skill for potential future careers in IT industries.
According to recent industry research, in the last 2 years over 40,000 ICT jobs have been created in Australia – but only 13% of girls study STEM in grades eleven and twelve, and just 1 in 10 enrolments to IT based degrees are girls. Combined, women account for less than 24% of the current IT workforce.
The Code Like a Girl workshops are the latest addition to the line-up of free educational workshops available at Microsoft Store. These range from Academy to Creative illustration and design to Xbox game design and Minecraft coding. The Code Like a Girl workshops address the growing need for skilled ICT workers in Australia and Microsoft’s commitment to improving diversity in the tech industry.
Code Like a Girl is an Australian organisation with the goal to reimagine the future for girls and women in the technology industry. The workshops at flagship Microsoft Store Sydney will be conducted by instructors with practical experience in the field, giving girls the opportunity to get hands on with technology, learning an array of skills from how to build websites, to how to create digital art and games, all using coding techniques and programs.
Jessica Erhart, Community Development Specialist at the flagship Microsoft Store Sydney commented on the partnership saying, “By providing young girls an opportunity to develop an active interest in coding, we can help deliver real impact to the future of the Australian technology industry. 505 Games Announces the Launch of Objects in Space
Calabasas, 21st June, 2018 – 505 Games proudly announces the launch of Objects in Space (PAX Australia Indie Showcase winner and alt.ctrl GDC finalist), out now at $19.99 on Steam and GOG Early Access for PC and Mac.
Developed by Sydney-based indie developer Flat Earth Games, Objects in Space is a retro open-world stealth-action space game in which starships are modelled on Cold War era submarines rather than on WWII dogfighters, and has an option for players to build custom starship bridges at home using physical hardware.
In the game, players have their own ship and must make their way in the Apollo cluster – a new home disconnected from our solar system for almost fifty years – an uncaring place alone in the universe where a new era for humanity has manifested and we thrive in bleak conditions.
Objects is a time-based open world, where the game takes place over three months and player choices matter on an entirely new dimension.
The team at Flat Earth Games have gone to great lengths to make it a different kind of open world – one in which players ‘exist’ for a time but aren’t guided through a main storyline or given chances to collect every available piece of the game world. The worlds of Apollo move on – the player just lives there for a while.
“This is a massive and complicated open world game,” said Leigh Harris, co-founder of Flat Earth Games. “But we created it to harken back to some of the early open world space games of the 80s and 90s. It lends itself very heavily towards sandbox play – players can engage with whatever parts of the world interest them the most and will be equally rewarded regardless of where their focus may lie.”
“One of our main drives was to get around the reflex-based combat gameplay present in a lot of other space games, and replace it with more tactical, decision-based stealth combat,” said Elissa Harris, co-founder of Flat Earth Games. “We wanted to offer players the choice to engage in combat or avoid it in lieu of a more creative solutions to problem, especially by making the act of avoiding combat – a form of cat and mouse stealth play – enjoyable in its own right.”
Objects in Space was produced with support from Screen New South Wales.
Features List:
Massive open world to explore full of NPCs to interact with
• Complex contract-based economic system with over 50 employers
• Time-based open world – opportunities, stories and events happen at certain times as well as certain places, so each play through will be different
• Tense submarine-influenced combat
• Fully customisable ships – design your vessel for combat, shipping, stealth and more
• Mostly avoidable combat for more pacifistic players
• A world of side quests – no single linear story players are required to follow
• Explore 12 hand-crafted populated star and 20 uncharted systems full of unknown threats and treasures
• Find derelict ships, wreckages, cargo pods and communication beacons adrift in space
• Be a trader, bounty hunter, explorer, pirate or all of them at the same time
• Sandbox mode – play the game without narrative content in an endless version of the game (coming soon)
• Scenarios – tense combat scenarios task the player with overcoming impossible odds and testing their skill (coming soon)
• Multi-player Scenarios – compete or cooperate in a variety of multiplayer modes and situations (coming soon)
• Build your own DIY controllers at home using Arduinos – anyone can construct their own ship bridge with physical switches and buttons with just a little bit of soldering know-how. Easy to learn and fun to do!

Update 2 Brings New Content and Features to Hunt: Showdown
Get Hunt now for 20% off in the Steam Summer Sale
FRANKFURT, Germany – June 21, 2018 – New content for Hunt: Showdown, Crytek’s early access multiplayer bounty hunting game, went live today with the release of Update 2, bringing new features, equipment, and improvements to the game, many of which were requested specifically by the Hunt community. To celebrate, Hunt will be discounted 20% during the Steam Summer Sale, from June 21 to July 5, available here.
The biggest feature coming with Update 2 is a boost mechanic designed to help those willing to risk taking down the boss monster rather than waiting for someone else to do the dirty work and trying to steal their prize. Whoever kills the boss monster will receive a temporary boost to their Dark Sight, allowing them to locate all other Hunters on the map for a short time and give them a fighting chance to win the match. Additions requested by the community include a death screen, the ability to add a fellow in-game Hunter as a friend in the main menu or in the pause menu during a match, the ability to collect ammo or consumables from dead Hunters, and the addition of Hunt theme music to the game menu.
On top of that, players will find a bear trap, hive bomb, and flare pistol, as well as the Beastface trait—which makes animals on the map less likely to react to you and give away your location—and the Tomahawk trait—which gives Hunters the ability to throw the axe and sledgehammer. A number of optimization improvements have also been included, which will continue to make the entire game experience run more smoothly. Alongside the update, Crytek released a new Hunt teaser video, playing here, and a blog post teasing some of the lore elements to be added in an upcoming update.
About Hunt: Showdown
Hunt: Showdown is a competitive first-person bounty hunting game with heavy PvE elements, from the makers of Crysis. Set in the darkest corners of the world, it packs the thrill of survival games into a match-based format. Hunt’s competitive, match-based gameplay mixes PvP and PvE elements to create a uniquely tense experience. Each match pits up to ten players—playing solo or in teams of two—against each other as they fight for bounty by taking out gruesome monsters in the swamps of Louisiana. Once they’ve found and defeated one of these, they will receive a bounty—and instantly become a target for every other Hunter left on the map. The higher the risk, the higher the reward–but a single mistake could cost everything.
